Methodist Background) This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 322 Grafton Avenue, Dayton, Ohio, this 1st day of August, 1925, in accordance with request made by her daughter, Miss [288].

Born January 6, 1879, in Perry County, Alabama, about 10 miles N. of Marion, Alabama, near what is now known as Sprott, Alabama. Time of Reading 12:20 Noon - Dayton Savings Time. …, Alabama.

1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the Universe, and the Universal Forces, giving the conditions that are as personalities, latent and exhibited, in the present life. Also the former appearances in the earth’s plane, giving time, place, and the name, and that in that life which built or retarded the development for the entity, giving the abilities of the present entity and to that which it may attain, and how.

2. EC: (While going back over the dates - “Henry the 8th, [Was born again 8/1/90?] August 1, 1890.”) [GD’s note: No questions were asked in regard to Mr. Cayce saying “Henry the 8th, August 1, 1890”, for fear of breaking into Mrs. [1187]‘s reading.]

3. Yes, we have the entity here, and those relations with the Universal Forces as are latent and manifest in the present earth’s existence, with those conditions as do appear as personalities and individualities in the present earth’s plane, and those Universal Forces as bring such urges and such conditions as show how such relations are reached in the present plane and from which these emanate.

4. In the taking then of the present position in the earth’s plane, we find the entity came from that of Venus, with Mars, Neptune, Jupiter, and with the influences in Saturn and in Moon’s forces. Hence we find one with many of the cares of earth’s influence and these conditions that do bring those of the earthly influences in the life of the present entity.

5. One slow of wrath.

6. One that is ever forgiving and forgetting those conditions that would be the detrimental forces towards self in connection with any action of others toward self.

7. One whose greater ruling passion is love for those whom the entity may assist, whether of the physical, mental or spiritual forces of self.

8. One we find who gives much to the assistance of those whom it contacts, through the ever willingness to be subservient, in a manner, to the will of others. This has often, as we see, brought much of the disconsolation and of the trouble and worry, physically and mentally, to the body.

9. One whose higher urges lies in that of the educational nature, and the entity, with the taking of the conditions as first presented, would have made a wonderful success for self in that of an educator. One who would have been able, through such forces, to have brought much of the higher forces in the educational field to self and those dependent upon same. One whose endeavors should have been in the Eastern portion of the country (United States). One who would, when the opportunity was offered to have travelled to the East, have been much benefited by same. One whose greater influence now lies in the abilities as that of dietetics and of aid to those pertaining to those conditions about hospital, or of such culinary operations as regarding same.

10. Then, as to how these urges are received, and the elements that have brought the changes in the life’s work and endeavors, we see come much from planetary effects through sojourn in same, with environ-mental force as has played and given its part.

11. In the one, then, before this, we find the entity in the days of Louis the 16th. Was the sister to that ruler and the attendant in the last days of that ruler’s life to that body, and the entity in the later days of that existence gained much of the fortitude as is manifested in the present sphere, and through which the entity fought and found much development. In the earlier portions, we find this not so used, which became the drudge to the individual in that plane. Then in the name of Angelica.

12. In the one before this we find in the days of the Roman rule, when in the name then of Octaviao. The entity then in the Courts of the ruler in that land, and in the house of the first in command of the soldiers when the expulsions of the peoples were demanded for those that rebelled against the then authority. The entity then did not develop in the plane, for it rebelled against the dictates of the then force over same. Hence the urge as we find in the present of seeking to aid others in their endeavors, whether of mental, moral or physical, yet looking ever on that side wherein the best is thought of the conditions attending same. This becomes questionable to others at times, see?

13. In the one before this we find in the days of the rule when the Persian forces were being separated by the warring of the Arabians (now), or the Nomads then, and the entity then in the tents of the Nomads, and the name Idoah, being then an assistant to the second in command of the forces then making war on the now Persian rule.

14. In the one before this, we find in the days of the second rule in the Egyptian forces, when the laws were being given to the peoples as pertaining to the worship of the spiritual forces manifested in earth’s plane, and the temples being reared or prepared. The entity then in the household of the ruler in Iconium, and in the name of Ousou. The entity then we find followed much in that way of the educational teachers of the day. Hence the urge for all about the entity to acquire knowledge and power, and the urge as is, and has been, to become the instructor in such elements. The entity both developed and retarded, for in the days when the banishment of the Priest, the entity sided with the Priest forces and this became detrimental, in the binding and imprisonment of the entity.

15. In the one before this, we find in the days when the rule in the land of the Atlantean forces. The entity then the one that served the foods to the high priests of that day. Then in the name of Altza, and the entity seeks, then, in the urge as is seen in present, towards those things pertaining to preparations of various characters for the use in the service of the inner man and the sustenances of the physical. This, then, as we find, coming in the urge wherein through and with the use of the mental forces and will in the present sphere, may become that element to which the entity may at the present bring its highest development in that of the dietetics, or of the assistant to those who prepare such for those who would gain in physical in health-giving flow to the body.

16. Then, in using these, for the entity may prepare self, through will’s forces, in assistance, as has been given and as is given, to others through the endeavors of the entity, and about which the entity has drawn those influences for self, apply same in the manner that will ever be first and foremost well pleasing to Him, the Giver of all good and perfect Gifts, for the will must be made One with His, would the Spirit of the Father be manifest through His creatures.

17. We are through for the present.

R3. 2/28/47 Daughter [288]‘s reply to questionnaire: “The Life Rdg. was wonderfully descriptive of my mother. She had lived a completely selfless life, always putting her children first, or friends for that matter; never pushing or taking the lead. Her greatest love has been the ‘doing’ for others. She’s a marvelous cook and has been very diet conscious. The part about the educational influences is true, too. Although orphaned young in life and not having an education, she always studied and learned and instilled in her children the desire to learn. In late years she has had a tremendous influence and joy in seeing her grandchildren educated.”

R4. GD’s note: Her daughters [288], [199] and [2111] had readings; also her sons [391] and [641]; and grandchildren [187], [2605], [1208], [1635], and [2892]. Her name is mentioned in their correspondence sometimes.

R5. 5/11/26 [1187]‘s ltr. to Cayces:

Dear Mr. Mrs. Cayce

I just want to thank you both for all that you have done for me and mine first you all and the work have done so much for [288] it has developed such gratitude in her that would never have came to light if it had not been for you all and your wonderful work, it also means a lot to me, to have her like she is as well as the comfort and good I’ve received through the readings things have all been so true and comforting.

The last readings [1187-3 and 1187-4] has helped me so much and am sure would have been so much better if could have gotten the vibrator sooner, I am using it now and have had such restful nights since I first began using it, I do appreciate it all so much and hope that the time will come when I can prove to you both just how much I do appreciate all that you’ve done for me and mine. Am so glad that we will soon be such so that if an opportunity ever presents I will be there to take advantage and help, I also feel that being there will be such a help in raising my younger children [[391], [641] and [2111]]. I do so want them to grow up to be useful men and women that I can be proud of and I feel like the associations they will have that will

help more than any thing else, thanking you again for all kindness, and help.

R6. 5/20/32 [1187]‘s ltr. to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce:-

I am sending you the little pamphlet enclosed Seventh Day Adventist data] and asking you to please read it very carefully, look up all references, and study and pray to God to show you the light on this very important subject. I will ask you to study it without prejudice and see if you don’t find it to be commanded from God Himself from the beginning unto the end of time and throughout eternity. Not that I am worried in the least as to the truth of it, for I believe every word that God has spoken for us. The reason why I am sending this to you is because I feel burdened for my children and I believe that you have a great influence with them; that is, [288] and the boys [[391] & [641]], and I feel like if you will study this subject and take nothing but God’s word as a guide, you will be obliged to acknowledge that God from the beginning of creation set aside the seventh day, blessed it and hallowed it, and commanded all men to observe it and keep it holy throughout all eternity; even when the earth is made new the saints will be keeping the seventh day Sabbath.

[288] has been writing me about you all having a study group. Don’t you think if you would just take the Holy Bible as your guide and study some of the important subjects that it would be a great help to all that are interested in God’s word? Such subjects as the Sabbath, the Second Coming of Christ, the State of the Dead, the Earth Made New, and be sure and stick absolutely to the Bible. We have some great helps on all of these subjects and many more if you would like to get help on any subject in the Bible. If you will just name it, I can tell you where you can get help that will make any subject in the Bible clear to anyone that is looking for truth. I’m sure that you would love the truth, and I can tell you right here that if you will go to one of the leaders of the Seventh Day Adventist Church there in Norfolk and tell he or she, whichever it may be, that you are looking for help on the truth of the Bible, and will study with them a while, you will see that they are the remnant church mentioned in the Bible, and that they are a commandment keeping people who know and teach the truth, and nothing but the truth. Now, won’t you do this? It certainly can’t hurt you, and I’m sure that you could will be thankful for doing it, for I am sure that you lead many into the light. Please don’t mention this to [288] until you look into the subject thoroughly. It will certainly bring peace and happiness to all who accept it.

R7. 5/20/32 Miss [288]‘s letter: “My mother, in trying to explain your work to Elder […] in the Seventh Day Adventist Church (which my mother has joined through the great influence of my sister, Mrs. [199]), has evidently been warned that you are communicating with departed spirits and that it is the work of the Devil.”

R8. 6/28/32 EC’s ltr. to [1187]:

My dear Mrs. [1187]:-

Yours of May 20th was received in due time. It came just when we were very busy trying to get the place arranged, and I was not so very well myself; consequently the delay in answering.

I appreciate your taking the time to write me, also I appreciate our counsel and advice. I don’t suppose there are many people who have had as continual a battle with themselves as I have, and with the things that have come through me - nor received as much advice and counsel for themselves as I have in the last few years. Long, long ago I realized what a responsibility was mine to counsel people respecting their life, their life’s work, and especially their relationships to their fellow man and to their Maker. I have read my Book quite often; in fact, I have made it a rule of my life to at least read its whole content once during every year of my life. I know this does not mean that I am well versed, even in the knowledge of it; neither does it give me the right or the privilege of making any private interpretation of it. I have tried my level best to study the Bible in the light of ALL the many questions that have arisen, not only as to denominational questions but the more weighty questions that you feel the Holy Sabbath is. More and more I am convinced that the Holy Sabbath has been and is being neglected by those who profess to call themselves children of God, but the HOLY Sabbath - if I read aright - does not mean the seventh day of the week. There’s no necessity in my giving you reference to this or that verse or chapter which has made this a living truth in my personal experience, for you no doubt know the Book as well or better than I could ever attempt to explain or argue it with you. I have spent many days studying various truths with different teachers. I hope, and believe, that I have attained that principle wherein that I have walked sufficiently close with my Master and my God to be on speaking terms with Him, and I am persuaded that others may do as they may, but I am certainly an unworthy child of God if I do not harken to the things He says to me day by day. Not that I have any special corner on any of His promises, for He has said, “Whosoever WILL, that will take up his cross and follow me.” That Miss [288] or the boys [[391] & [641]] are especially influenced in their lives by that they may may have gotten from their association or conversation with me or the work I try to do for others, makes me feel more and more the obligation I owe my fellow man - and the duty I owe my God. We do not always know just what is the proper thing to say if we allow our own selves to be the spokesman, but if His SPIRIT abides within us we may indeed be able to speak as the Spirit gives utterance, and His Spirit beareth witness with our spirits as to whether we are the children of God or not.

I thank you for the references you sent me. I have read them and expect to read them many, many times again. That we all do not see alike is, of course, very evident. While we know there’s only One God, and only one approach through His Son, but we being many members of the Son and brothers with Him and heirs to the kingdom certainly will not find fault with our brother if he doesn’t think exactly as we do - but we can certainly all be of One Purpose - that is, to use those abilities, those talents of whatever nature He has given us, to the best of our ability in His service alone. If we are misguided because we do not see just as the other, WHO is to find fault? WHO is to be our judge? He who has endowed us with these, or our brother who has been endowed from the same source?

I wish that I might sit down and talk with you about these questions. It is impossible for me to write as I would like. Know this: I am striving, if I know myself and my heart, to be used as a channel of blessings to my fellow man, with no idea of propagating any special way or manner; for HE is the Way, and there IS no other! We remember He was questioned and tried for this very same offense, disregarding the Sabbath - and, as He put it, “Man is not made for the Sabbath, but the Sabbath for man.” So, in our observances of such things, as Paul aptly put it, “It is oft the letter of the law that killeth, but the spirit that maketh alive.”

I am mighty glad to hear from you whenever you have any reference, or anything you would like for me to read, or that you have to say to me - and I assure you it will receive my sincere and PRAYERFUL consideration. I feel I have been benefited by your letter, for it reminds me of my responsibilities to my fellow man and to my God.

I thank you, and trust you will take this in the spirit it is meant; for words are often inadequate to carry the feeling or the meaning that we desire to convey. Our lives are such that they speak so much louder than our words!

R9 . 6/8/36 See 1187-7, Par. 18-A, her third Physical Reading following a paralytic stroke on 6/5/36, indicating “Many’s the day since there has been such care or attention for the body…the body enjoys being waited on - as is natural for any inclination that has hungered much for attention and had little.”

R10. 6/2/43 See little granddaughter’s Life Rdg., 1635-3, indicating there was an association in the early American incarnation with the Audubon family of which [1635] was a part. However, Mrs. [1187] was not told of this incarnation in her Life Rdg. (Mrs. [1187] took care of little [1635] when she was a small child, while her mother [2111] worked.)

R11. 1/60 GD’s memo: Compare the Life Rdg. for [641]‘s mother, [1187], who was always very interested in health foods; was associated with [641] in Atlantis as a dietician for the priests. If he had not had the good karma of such a mother he might never have lived to grow up, because such care was necessary in his diet during his early years.

R12.Mrs. [1187] died 11/12/53 at the age of 75 in …, Ala., 8 p.m. No suffering - just went to sleep - stopped breathing.

R13. 1/31/2001 JT’s note: on an historical records recovery trip to Selma, Alabama in November of 2001 ECF located and photographed the house on 1138 First Avenue where Mrs. 1187 lived at the time of her death. Her obituary was copied from the Selma Times Journal and the headstone was located and photographed in New Live Oak Cemetery.

Selma Times Journal November 13, 1953 “Mrs. Annie C. Davis Mrs. Annie C. Davis, 77, a resident of Selma for many years past, died at 8 p.m. Thursday at her residence, 1138 First Avenue. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Funeral services have been announced for Sunday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Breslin Service Funeral Home with the Rev. W.E. Peeke, Seventh Day Adventist minister, officiating. Interment will be in New Live Oak cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Mary Brown, Selma; Mrs. Al Turner, Virginia Beach, Va.; and Mrs. Chapin Williams, [Wilson] Norfolk, Va.; two sons, Burt Davis, Staten Island, New York; Boyd Davis, of California; and a sister, Mrs. Mary Schmidt, Oklahoma City, Okla.”
