This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 8th day of April, 1927, in accordance with request made by Mr. [900].

Time of Reading 161 West 75th Street, 12:15 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City, N.Y.

1. GC: You will have before you the bodies and the enquiring minds of [900] and [136], and the experience they had on the 4th day of April, 1927, in Women’s Hospital, 110th St. & Amsterdam Ave., on the 2nd floor, room 3, New York City, with [136] and [900] alone in the room and the spirit mother [139]. You will give the interpretation and the lesson to be gained by these individuals from this wonderful experience. [GD’s note: This was the birth date of their son, [142].]

2. EC: Yes, we have the experience here, and this as viewed from this plane is but another experience in the lives of these individuals, who are gaining a more vivid and a broader understanding of the oneness of the universal forces, and of how that the body consciousness of the individual becomes aware of the manifestations of the force as is seen through such experiences.

3. Much may be said regarding this experience, and many desire to give their interpretation of how this is accomplished, and many may give that information from their own consciousness. There are, as is seen in this experience, more than one consciousness that is aware of conditions that are manifested in such an experience - for, as is seen, the body consciousness of [900] is aware both of the consciousness in self that is of the material body and aware of the consciousness as experienced by that same sensuous consciousness being subjugated, and the cosmic consciousness making itself felt by the presence of the consciousness of the mother, and there is the awareness of the thought in the material manner of HOW such is being made manifest.

4. Now, from the viewpoint as is seen in and through the consciousness of [136], this becomes more of the personal nature, for the physical attributes are aware that the manifestation is not of the material production, yet same is made aware by the use of the sensuous faculties. Hence the divisions as are made through such information as being given regarding sensuous consciousness, and mental consciousness, and of cosmic or universal consciousness - while, as is seen by the body conscious mind of [900], all consciousness is one consciousness.

5. Now, as to the information as given the consciousness of [136], this is rather that as experienced, than the sensuousness being able to tell how same IS experienced, and is felt rather than seen or heard, see? Leigh giving this.

7. Now the experience of the two is that as has been given by many in the interpretation of the cause, manner, and mode of spirit communication. And TO the subjugated the spirit assumes form, and has the faculties of the body that is known in the mental consciousness, yet to the other consciousness it presents only the manifestations known, and no form or voice, or any of the bodily conditions appear, save that INNER consciousness of the PRESENCE of another being, and that BEING that as is seen, felt, heard, known, by the subjugated consciousness. Ouspensky giving this.

8. Now, this experience is to the consciousness of [136] the rendering to the mental that as attained by the indwelling of the concentrated forces of the inner self, or the soul taking hold on the self in that manner as to make the one feel, and the other experiencing the trials of the hour, and the efforts of the other to obtain relief in the endeavors, and, as is seen, those conditions portray such a consciousness as makes to the body-mind the untenable idea of this not being real - yet is the most real of life - for in life in the midst of death - in death in the midst of life, see? Berger [Bergsen?].

9. In the experiences as are seen by these entities there is gained that knowledge of the fullness of life, as is found in ME, for, as has been given, “Lo, I am with you, even unto the end of the world.” This, then, is that fullness of life as is found in Him who gave Himself as the ransom of many. For the way that leads to the more perfect understanding of life is that which leads into the valley of the shadow of the borderland - for, as is seen, the borderland is crossed by both that submerged and that absent from the body, taking on all of the attributes of the life in each, see? 10. “To [136] I have come, in that certain way that makes known the life after death.” And the willingness of the mother is to ever be present in the mental attitude of the entity, to shield every though, every care. “Be thou faithful, then, in those lessons I have given to you, to [900], and to the baby [See 142-1 Life Rdg., Par. 22-A, 23-A, 24-A, 5/15/27] - who comes from among us, and whom I have known before.” [GD’s note: Apparently this last message was from [136]‘s mother, [139].]

R1. 4/9/27 Mr. [900] wrote: “The reading on [136] and her mother [139] is wonderful beyond words and I cannot even start to comment on it - at least not now. I assume you felt the same way in not writing about it. I assume the closing paragraph is [136] herself talking - don’t you?”

R2. 4/9/27 Husband [900]‘s letter:

“At about 4:45 P. M. Monday afternoon April 4th, under the start of a new moon in its 4th day, our entity of angels in the physical form of baby [142] was born. On the evening of April 6th while at dinner celebrating my birthday and baby’s birth the family came in to tell us…[[136]‘s and [3816]‘s father] had died suddenly that day. We learned that he had committed suicide. Naturally [3816] hurried home and I will send her reading to her [3816-1, taken on 4/6/27], together with a letter to guard against such a condition arising as is indicated in the enclosed dreams [See interpretation in his reading 900-311 on 4/11/27]. I hope my feeble efforts in the letter will avail. Poor kid [3816], she is in terrible shape.

“As for [136], for the baby [142]‘s sake, the milk you see - injury to mammary gland due to mental - we have not told her. It is so pitiable, so tragic - the poor kid. She is only 22 years old, is so happy with her little baby. She is all dressed up now in her pink kimona and feels so proud as all come to see her baby. Everyone up here is just horror struck, and sometimes as she talks of taking her baby to see its granddad in …, La., we have got to fight hard to keep back the tears from coming right in front of her. He wrote her a letter just before, on April 6th, congratulating her, etc. We told her that [3816] was called home on account of serious illness of [3816]‘s mother-in-law. I don’t know if this is right or not - the doctor says she can’t know - we are doing what we think is right - I hope we are right. Maybe the reading will touch on this. It is going to be a terrible shock when it comes and of course not telling her is only postponing it, even if it will be worse by virtue of our present story. We feel she will be better able to stand it physically and I can only pray the Lord that it does not affect her milk then, for the child’s sake.

“That poor soul [her father] that so acted is suffering terribly now, as is indicated [in the dreams - see 900-311], and I only beg and pray that he will find peace and rest, for the Father will give to him, as we know, another chance in earth. In a period of 14 months these two poor girls [[136] and [3816]] have lost both mother and father, the latter at a time that is terrible. I know all will be well, but much advice and comfort may come through the interpretation of the enclosed and therefore I send it to you [See dreams interpreted in 900-311 on 4/11/27]…

“The reading on [136] and her mother [139] is wonderful beyond words [136-59 taken on 4/8/27] and I cannot even start to comment on it - at least not now. I assume you felt the same way-in not writing about it. I assume the closing paragraph is [139] herself talking - don’t you?”

R3. 4/20/27 See Mrs. [136]‘s next dream interpretation reading, 136-60, requested in her husband [900]‘s letter 4/18/27 as follows:

“Well, the first gun went off last night and I have been expecting this in one way or another for the last few nights. [136] had just finished the 2 a.m. nursing when, after dozing off to sleep, she awakened and told me of the following dream [re. her father see 136-60 interpretation]… So you see how the cosmic is taking a hand to help us here and I doubt not but that the interpretation will be as much instructions for me in relation to this, as anything else, although the reading may take the matter in its own hands and to the extent best, I hope it does. Of course we know the truth, and we’ll be guided as to how to act in relation to [136] by the reading. Of course I told her that the dream meant the truth - that her father had been desperately sick all along, but we had not told her due to her condition. Thus she is somewhat prepared, and unless something intervenes will await the reading for the next step, which I suppose you will take with others of [136]‘s and mine Wed. a. m. I will phone you Wed. noon to find out what to do in the matter. One thing too, I hope the reading swings into, and which probably Mrs. Cayce will be given the opportunity to ask about, [136]‘s present physical, and that in the mental and physical to be warned against when she is told the truth of her father, for her own and the baby’s sake (baby’s milk, see?). In her present physical she has headaches, backaches and is often cold, although weather is warm. I think all this will be given in the reading [136-60], for I believe here again the mother [139] is on the job. Of course if you have an open date Tues. p.m. or receive no answer all the better, but I’ll get in touch with you Wed. a.m. unless you wire me otherwise.

“At the same time I had one [dream] worthy of submitting that may have some bearing on this [dream] of [136]‘s of her father, as follows: Mine of 4/18/27: The power connection was very weak, but my consciousness became clearly aware of the voice of an interviewer saying, ‘The cosmic consciousness to help just in time.’ It may or may not be well to include this with that of [136]‘s, I don’t know, although it probably will help rather than deter, showing [136] more and more the actuality of a living father and mother who understand her and her wants and needs better now than if they had been alive and that actually are helping and guiding her from their stronger, deeper, broader, more understanding viewpoint.”

B2. 4/4/27 Husband [900]‘s letter re psychic experience had by [136] in hospital during labor for birth of her son [142]: “To try to write of experiences such as I have gone through recently is beyond description and its volume is too great to break up into words, and significance too huge to find verbal expression. I only hope I may prove worthy of the gift from the Giver of all good and perfect gifts.

“Now, as great an objective demonstration of spirit communication that I have ever seen or hope to witness occurred this afternoon between [136] and her mother [139], as I was holding her hand. It also indicates that anesthetic (as pointed out by Ouspensky) makes the mind subject, or opens it subconsciously, to communication. [136]‘s pains were so bad that they gave her an ether enema and it doped her. Hazily she said to me:

“My mother is with me. She has been with me since this morning. ‘See, she is right there!’ Then [136] pointed to the other side of the bed from which I was sitting, and indicating a little above her head, again said: ‘My mother is right there.’

“‘What is she saying to you?’ I asked.

“‘She is telling me of her intense pain in her eye and head while she was sick and telling me to be brave in my pain now. She is bearing me up - I never could keep up my courage, but for her being with me. She is right here with me - has been all day.’

“‘What is she saying?’ I asked - and then in my mind I finished the sentence as follows ‘about your trouble?’

“‘She is saying,’ replied [136] clearly and precisely, ‘not to worry - that everything is coming out alright!’

“‘How do you know she is here with you?’ I asked.

“‘I feel her - I see her - she is praying for me - she is here right with me - right there,’ and again [136] pointed her hand to the same exact location.

“Now I ask you, have you ever heard of anything so wonderful? Poor little kid, only her sister [3816] of her own kin with her, having lost her mother comparatively recently [2/13/26], longing for her on this day of suffering more than ever, feels and knows that her loved one is with her and hears from her. Her heart lonesome for that mother, bravely not complaining of her heartache, reaches for the mother and, glory be to the Almighty, she reaches out not in vain!

“I tell you, when I came out and told five grown folks about this, including my very practical mother [106], every one of them cried like babies. Darn it, I am bawling as I write it. It sort of has me in a daze - I don’t know just how to be grateful enough or what to do. It’s so wonderful, so definite, so precise, so beautiful that it is far beyond me. In some small way I hope to come somewhere near to appreciating such an experience, for I know it is bewildering and beyond me - above and mightier than poor little me.

“Who cares for the opinions of those who call spirit communication bunk? What do their opinions amount to anyway? What weight have they in the constructive field of knowledge building?

“A little pain-wracked body, harboring a lonesome and aching heart, receives not only a response from the spirit mother [139] that comforts the heart, but actually aids, encourages and sustains the physical strength of this body and does it in no uncertain manner. Is this then impractical? Is it illusionary? Well, then, make the most of it - I intend to in my lifetime, believe me!

“If you want to illustrate to your class the glory of the Lord, read this experience to them, explaining the circumstances of the death [of 139], etc., to them. If it was you in the unconscious state the response could not have been clearer or more definite.

“I’d like awful much for you to take this in a reading, as it occurred the 4th day of April, 1927 in Woman’s Hospital - [136] and I alone in the room and the spirit mother [139]. Maybe the latter [139] will speak - talk to both of us in the reading. I hope so. Please take it soon.

“This is what I was trying to tell you over phone and I’m glad I couldn’t. Must close and go to bed as I am dead tired.”
