This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 21st day of December, 1937, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [1438], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading The Hotel …, 11:10 to 11:25 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Calif. (Entity, who seeks a Check Life reading covering her immediate problems and inquiries. You will answer the questions she has submitted, as I ask them:)
-
EC: We have the body, the enquiring mind, [1438]; these in part we have had before.
-
As we find, as has been indicated, from many angles of the associations, as well as for the health of the body, there has been and there would be a better surrounding in San Antonio than in California; especially for self physically and for the associations of the son, and the activities of same.
-
However, if the body chooses to do otherwise, then the conditions that arise from same - if they seem more expedient in such surroundings as chosen - would be acted upon and must then be a consideration by the body itself, and not then seek to JUSTIFY self from the information which has been given from here!
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Will my son be able to find a job? (A) That depends upon the application of the son; and much of the attitude of self as in relationships to same.
For these are ever the laws of cause and effect, the laws of supply and demand, the laws of the activities of associations of individuals either acting from the angle of service for service, or service through ingratiation or whatnot.
These are contingent upon applications of the individual’s abilities in directions of associations with others. These then become dependent. Possible, but whether the application is to be made depends upon the individual.
- (Q) Will there be advisable or a desirable development at … [my estate in N.Y.] next spring? (A) This again is contingent upon the activities of those that have indicated their desire to apply self in the direction of carrying forward the policies and activities that have been considered.
As we find, if agreements are reached with those who have CONSIDERED the activities, AND their associates, there will be developments worthwhile.
-
(Q) Will Mr. [165] cooperate with it? (A) The associations and cooperations may be had; this contingent, to be sure upon circumstances in the activities of [165] in other fields as well as those abilities to carry on. But through the ASSOCIATIONS of [165] AND their activities, these may be carried forward.
-
(Q) Was Mr. [165] connected with this entity in a former earth life? (A) These should be drawn from the information that has been given each respecting their activities in the various phases of experience in earthly existences.
These will be drawn from there. These may be added here.
-
(Q) What is meant by the “madness” referred to in my Life reading? Is this in reference to myself or family or friends? (A) The allowing of self to at times be overcome by hurts, disappointments; so as to create within the experience of self that which is as madness to the mental - yea, to the spiritual self. And it has to do with the ATTITUDE of self in relations to the family, and oft extending to friends; and has at times, as has been indicated, made for experiences that have become very disturbing to the body, [1438].
-
(Q) Any further advice to this body at this time? (A) Rather in the spiritual life and self, turn to the divine WITHIN! Know that the Creative Forces are within the SELF, and these when applied in the mental and spiritual self become as the overflowing of that love which has been promised by the Father in the Son, that peace and harmony reign within.
And until self can find, and does awake to the realization of that union of desire, of love within the self, and KNOWS such a peace, it certainly CANNOT shed it on others!
It must then first be found within self.
- We are through with this reading. [See 1438-3, Par. B2.]

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 12/27/37 [1438]‘s letter to EC:
”…Two points in the readings which were obscure to me at first have been cleared up. The 3rd and 4th dorsal [1438-2] was found to be out of plumb by an osteopath unknown to me before, and the allusion to madness has turned out to be my next door neighbor in this hotel. A foreign lady, whom I have known for many years has been losing her mental balance for some time, but now she has been removed and I am very glad.
“I also want to thank Miss Gladys Davis for her very kind postscript in her letter of December 20th which accompanied the copy of my Life reading.
“I apologize again for having been so careless as to have lost it in the packing.
“I have written to Mr. [165] asking him to check up on his Egyptian incarnation which would be most interesting to me…”
R2. 1/6/38 [165]‘s letter to [1438]:
“Your appreciated letter with enclosed documents [in re … [1438]‘s estate?] has reached me after being forwarded from New York. In the meantime you have doubtless received my letter saying that I was sending to New York for same.
“First. Your Check reading is an interesting one in many ways. I wish I had here a copy of your first reading. It would help complete the picture. I hope you and I can get together with the various readings and analyze their messages. I have taken the liberty of numbering the lines in pencil.
“Lines 8—12 [1438-3, Par. 3] say to me that the previous reading was based on a geographical location in Texas, and deviations have arisen due to change of base. (Just my opinion, another might react differently.)
“Line 13 [Par. 5-A]: It is interesting, to get your remarks in letter regarding the improved attitude of [1430], in connection with the answer to the job question. Perhaps the groundwork is being laid that will make for a permanent business hook-up. That would solve a lot of things, and for your sake and his, I hope it can work out. I am still making lists of possibilities for him, and will want to discuss them with you in person, and of course, with him.
“Lines 30 & 31 [Par. 6-A]: Those who have considered the activities at … [your estate]: This includes as far as I know the facts, Miss Langley, Columbia, the Group offering Summer symposium, the St. John Theater Group, my group of Mr. Powers who thinks in terms of the Inn, Mr. [317] in terms of weaving and pottery, myself in terms of coordinating the ideals that fill the place with income production that will make it stable for the future, on its own. Then of course yourself and [1430] who are part and parcel of the heart of it. ‘If agreements are reached with those who have considered’ - ‘there will be developments worthwhile.’ You see, I think in terms of the angles I know about. It may refer to a lot of people I do not know.
“Line 32 [Par. 7-A]: I am glad you asked about me in connection with the work because it places me to myself in relation to your thinking. My present personal plans lie elsewhere, but they are only plans. I have to be making them. Some even remote contact with you for the future would be fine to look forward to.
“Line 37 [Par. 8-A]: Here again I am wishing for a copy of your first reading [1438-1]. The Egyptian connection seems too far remote; perhaps there were two or more. I will get in more questions in time. Am enclosing my copy of my Life reading and would be glad to have it returned at your convenience [165-2]. If you can at that same time send your first reading, I would like to get up a list of questions regarding possible contacts. I have been looking for some years for contact with someone who seemed definitely to have had previous association with me in order to focus on details instead of generalities.
“I am taking the liberty of sending you my reading of November 8th [165-26]. I think as I go over and over it, that it is one of the finest human documents I ever saw, if it is entirely human. Possibly it goes beyond that; no, I should say probably, because Mr. Cayce lives his every hour in the presence of his maker. [See his letter of same date to HLC under 165-26 Reports.]
“Earlier readings gave definite names of those who would finance certain boys in my school; boys who are orphans or of poor parents. Names of Judge Seabury, Irene DuPont, etc. I have tried my best to get to them, but have not yet succeeded. This reading indicates that I have a personal hurdle to climb before they can be reached. I am trying to make the leap. The earlier readings wanted me to give up work on some of my commercial enterprises, but the need for daily bread has kept me at them. I cannot tell what to do next beyond keeping at matters, I dare not become a pest to those men. Just between the devil and the deep, you see. Perhaps you can get something I fail to get out of the reading. In any event, what do you think of it? And, of course, I would like it back again.
“Your philosophies are grand. Youth we don’t as [ask?] for? You and I have more of it than most youngsters. The church? Why be circumscribed by any form or building when inside is the living temple? Relations with fellowmen? When I get rid of this residue of pride that makes me stumble, the other fellow will become normal, I guess. Since I have known you I have learned more about meditation than I ever dreamed of. It brings answers. I’ve a feeling you know much more about that than I do.
“Yes, the Christmas is past. Glad of it. Alone, or with one or two on a mountain top, would be sane for Christmas. Perhaps your dessert, also. The New Year is going to see a lot of cobwebs cleared away. And perhaps for you and for [1430] and for me. Let’s keep in touch this year with Mr. Cayce. He has lots to give and heart for the giving, but so many don’t know how to receive. I shall be glad when you can meet him…”
R3. 5/30/38 Mrs. [1438] reported on her Physical Rdg. See under 1438-2 Reports.
R4. 6/12/38 ”…I am asking for help about [1430]‘s drinking. I can’t seem to see any way out. Most men can drink with impunity but [1430] cannot. It’s generally at these weekends and it takes three days to get normal again. I have to do his work. The question is, can I stand it… There is a solution for everything, it is said. Nothing from outside can make him stop. It must be inside. No one is as sorry as he is, afterward. Will you look into the future a bit and give me some advice…”
R5. 6/15/38 EC’s letter to Mrs. [1438]:
“I have yours of the 12th, and sincerely hope we may be of some help. I can appreciate your position, as well as your feelings in the matter. We have had several such conditions. It will be necessary to get, if possible, [1430]‘s cooperation, not only for the reading, but as well as for carrying out the suggestions that may be given.
“Owing to the fact, Mrs. [1438], that our annual meeting is at hand and there has been unusual interest shown in our efforts here, we are quite well in advance with our appointments, and the first open period we have in the afternoon of the 30th of June, 3:30 to 4:30 EST. Will that time be satisfactory, and will you be able to give me [1430]‘s address at that time, for that time? I just hope this will be satisfactory. I wish you might be with us at our Congress meeting. It begins on the 25th through the 28th. We would certainly love to have you.
“Let me know if the time set will be all okay and possibly you will have to let me know the day beforehand the address. Get [1430]‘s cooperation if possible…”
R6. 8/6/38 Mrs. [1438]‘s letter to EC:
“I had meant to get a reading for [1430] without his cooperation, but in your letter of the third, I gather that you expect him to wish to stop. I only wish he would.
“The date you mentioned…he has to be away all day. Therefore I wired you asking for another appointment. I see now that it is no good…”

B2. 12/21/37 GD’s note: ”…Mrs. [1438], Mr. [165] was - according to his Life reading - very closely associated with you in the Egyptian period; at least this I would surmise from comparing your reading with his. I’m sure if you’d ask him, Mr. [165] would be very glad to let you have a copy of his Egyptian incarnation as given in his Life reading…”
