This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Va. Beach, Va., this 13th day of September, 1933, in accordance with request made by his mother - Mrs. [959], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Mrs. Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 3:25 to 3:35 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Pa. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: We have the body, [146]; this we have had before.
-
As we find, the conditions are greatly improved in this body from that we have had before. While there are still some hindrances in the general make-up of the body’s functioning normally through the sensory activities of the body, these show - as we find - considerable improvements in EVERY way and manner. And the nerve ends, where there has formerly been the smooth reaction - or lacking in the supply to the organs of the vocal forces and the impulses through the sensory system, these are beginning to be more active.
-
As to the applications in the present, we find that it would be the more helpful to continue with the suggestions. And we find that these would be more effective if the electrically driven vibrator is used at the five forty-five meditation (5:45 P.M.), for fifteen minutes, over those centers from the 4th dorsal area to the base of the brain; running it along both sides of the spine, first one side and then the other, and over those centers directly, see? Also run it over the neck and the deeper portions in the front part of neck, and to the upper portion of the area under the glands of the throat also; using the bulb applicator (that is, the little ball - see?), and going deeper and deeper gradually as the body is able to stand same. This will enable the body to respond to vibrations that are set up.
-
During the period of meditation have the body (during the meditation and treatment period) to continue as much as possible in sounding ar - r - r - r - r - r - see? [Chant.]
-
Do this. Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What steps should be taken next for his better development? (A) Those that we have outlined, in the application of those things that will make the ability for the forces in the body to respond.
-
(Q) Any other advice? (A) We would not change any from that which as we have given regarding the surroundings, but be positive and sure about the applications of the electrically driven vibrator AT THIS PERIOD, see? fifteen minutes; five forty-five (5:45) in the evening. We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. GD’s note: On waking EC said: “Did you get anything?” He felt as if he hadn’t been to sleep.
R2. 9/23/33 Mrs. Pope wrote: “I am so glad the rdg. for [146] showed improvement and is so easy for me to follow.”
R3. 9/20/33 Mother [959] wrote: “I am delighted with [146]‘s rdg.”
R4. 10/23/33 Mrs. Pope wrote: “[146] seems to be more active lately. He does not like me to put the vibrator on his throat but I am sure he will when he is more used to it.”
R5. 1/8/34 Mother wrote: “Mrs. Pope writes that [146] is well and happy, but she can get no response whatever from him in the way of talking… I believe she is doing everything she can to help [146], and why he does not respond like I understand the rdgs. to say that he should is beyond me. I may be too impatient. It is just three years this month since he started taking the Mayblossom Bitters. It seems like he should be over the effect of Luminal by this time and be taking on more words.”
R6. 1/26/34 His mother requested 356-2 for her mother.
R7. 4/20/34 Mother wrote: “I find myself often asking the question about [146]: Lord, what else can we do for him? What or who is in the way? I do not want to be selfish, but I do want him to receive the blessing that so many are receiving every day [through your work]. God is able to heal the mind, body, soul and all, if we are willing, and I feel we are all willing to sacrifice anything we know to have [146] normal. It looks now like we are at a standstill, doing nothing for [146]. Have you any suggestions? Mrs. Pope writes that he is well and happy, but no improvement is apparent in the past months. I am sure she is doing all she can to follow out the treatments as outlined.”
R8. 4/23/34 EC wrote: “Yes, I know how you must feel oftentimes about [146]. We have to not explain ourselves, but rather feel that place that is necessary for the soul development of all those we contact from day to day, the more so for those who have been given in our charge and keeping as of our own household. For, had it not been that he needed you and what you are able to do for him, he would not have come into your care and keeping. To be sure, we may be anxious, but our anxiousness should make us rather in that position of doing wholly all that is possible from our angle, that he may get in this experience the greater and greater understanding. If He sees it best that all of this shall pass away, and that [146] shall have a better experience from our viewpoint at this time, it will come about. If it is better that he have all of this time, love, care, attention bestowed upon him in order that he might in the future, in his activities, return it 40, 60 or 100 fold to those who may be under his ([146]‘s) care, then - if we have done our job well - it will be acceptable in His sight - and we will learn more and more to say, ‘Thy will, O Lord, be done in me.’ I don’t mean that we want to stop, or that those things promised may not be carried out. For we know He is able. But let us be willing to do the whole job in God’s way.”
R9. 5/17/34 Mrs. Pope wrote EC: “In my mind I have written you many times. It is impossible for me to get away from here to come down to see you, as much as I would like to do that, because if I could talk to you, you would - perhaps - know what is in my mind; I am sure I could never write it. One thing stands out above everything else and that is, the more kindnesses I do for others the worse I am treated in every way. I seem to have lost the WAY, and all faith and confidence in humanity after the experiences of the past year. I feel that you could help me very much if I just could talk to you. Would it ever be possible for you to stop here at the school on your way to or from N.Y. sometime?”
R10. 5/19/34 EC’s letter to Mrs. Pope: “I think I can truly understand the trials you have been going through a great deal better than I could possibly tell you. You know, especially the last six months have been the most trying on sensitive individuals, or those who have been making a sincere effort to manifest the spiritual things in their lives day after day, then possibly any period for years and years. It is, indeed a war between the forces of good and evil in unseen places, if you understand me. Possibly we are going through the dark hours just before dawn. Most of us have been in the Garden of Gethsemane. If we have put all our hope and trust in Him we won’t falter, even though they do smear us often with their ‘spittle’ and their unkindness, for the good and gentleness we have tried to show. It is only those who remain faithful to the end who will wear the crown.
“All of us at times are inclined to feel and to ask the question, ‘If God loves us and we are trying so hard, why do we have to suffer so in body, in mind, and why do those who seemingly pay so little attention to the truth and the light, who even flaunt their waywardness in our very faces, prosper and get along better than we do?’ Many of us at times feel that we should at least be privileged to enjoy some of those promises of the good things of life here and now, and we should. I suspect that in the hearts and lives of most of those who are outwardly indifferent, who have forgotten to be just kind, just gentle and longsuffering, they are having a hard time to sleep at times. They must be troubled within, beaten down; making a bold front but within, as He said, ‘full of dead men’s bones.’ “I certainly wish I might have the opportunity to talk with you and on my next visit to N.Y. I assure you I will make a special effort to stop and see and talk with you. I believe conditions are going to adjust themselves so that you may have the opportunity to get down this way sometime this summer…
“I would like for you from time to time, Mrs. Pope, if you can, to write me all about these distressing things. Not that I think I have anything out of the ordinary to offer as an aid or help, but most of us are made so that in the telling of our troubles to others we do gain something. That is why the Confessional has always had its place and appeal to so many. I assure you I am more than glad to try at any time to be of help, in any way possible. I know I am very weak myself, but if we are weak in Him our strength will come to us in ways that will help everyone. So let us hear from you whenever you can.”
R11. 5/25/34 Mrs. Anne M. Pope’s reply to EC’s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
“How can I thank you for the wonderful letter you sent me? It has not only helped me but I have quoted some of it to others hoping it would be a help to them also.
“Just the knowledge that there was a period wherein others were feeling the same trying experiences and that you understood has helped me so very much. It has uplifted me in spirit which was what I needed. A day or two before your letter reached me (the thoughts had come while you were writing) I took myself to task and turned my mind to better thoughts. Some of the children had measles and it was so hard on me as it was not only a worry as to the after affects but it was so much more work and several had such distressing coughs that it seemed my nerves could not stand to hear them so I at last told myself that the doctor was really doing nothing to help and that only the Great Physician could help me and them. I then repeated some good affirmation and visualized every word. They are much better (one entirely stopped) and I am feeling so much relieved in body and mind.
“I hope my faith and trust in Infinite Goodness is increasing as I know I would not want to stay here if it was not. Some one has told me that I am being tried. I suppose that is so but I wish I could take these trials more calmly and really learn the lesson. I wish I could recognize them at once for what they are to mean and ask the guidance of the Spirit before I get so ‘down.’ I really have so very much to be grateful for and I am usually contented if not really happy. My gracious Father is so kind and loving always. One friend said yesterday that we are like wayward children that we drop His hand so often and try to go our own way.
“It would be such a great pleasure if you would stop here sometime you are going by. That is such a nice possibility that you think might come to me to get down there but I wish it could be during the conference. I was interested to know that Dr. Curtis is to be at the conference as a speaker. Some friends of mine in Harrisburg have formed a class which meets once a week to study his lessons. I received one of the lessons yesterday but have not had time to read it. I have one of his little booklets of extracts from his writings. Two of these women are in New York this week to the Arcane School conference. Do you know of that work? I have read the ‘Consciousness of the Atom’ which gave me a great amount of information.
“The worst thing that ‘nags’ me is that I cannot pay what I owe because the parents of these children do not pay me. If I could get all that they owe me I could settle all my debts. Then my mind would be free. Hope this will be a fact soon.
“With all best wishes for a good conference and a splendid year, I am,” sincerely, Annie Pope
R12. 8/23/34 Mrs. Pope wrote: “Mrs. [959] asked me in her last letter if I had heard from you recently. She wants to make a trip up here if she can sell her mother’s refrigerator to see her boy. He [146] is just about as usual except that on Tuesday he had about as violent an epileptic seizure as I have ever witnessed in anyone. It lasted fully a minute and he jerked all over the entire time but there was no foaming. For weeks before that he had not been jerking noticeably. I do not know what could have caused it. We had been having melons more often than ever before and I wondered if that could be the cause, but I gave [146] very little at a time.
“We are getting along better [financially] as some [parents] have made efforts to send me part of what they owe me and have promised more for this month but the days are almost at the end and have not heard from them.”
R13. 8/27/34 EC’s letter: “It is evidently at a period of some definite change in [146], and if we are able to meet the condition in the present it might be possible to eradicate it at this time. Whether this arises from the diet or something else, of course, it is impossible to tell. I do hope, though, that should Mrs. [959] desire that he undertake another rdg. at this time that the suggestion will not be such as to be impractical for you to take care of the case there.”
R14. 7/1/35 EC gave Ck. Physical Rdg. 146-10.
