This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 1st day of July, 1935, in accordance with request made by the mother - Mrs. [959], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 11:15 to 11:35 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Pa.

1. GC: You will have before you the entity known as [146], who is at Rosehill School, Chester Heights, Penn. You will give an analysis of the spiritual and mental factors which are influencing the physical condition of this entity and explain how his will may be aroused to cooperate with those attempting to help him. Explain in detail the psychological and basic soul development causes of his physical condition, and give specific directions for meeting the mental and spiritual needs in relation to the physical experience.

2. EC: Yes, we have the entity, [146]; this in part we have had before.

3. As to those conditions in the physical forces of the body, these - as we find - show many changes from that when we had same heretofore. In the main these show improvements.

4. There is a more normal reaction in the physical body, yet the coordinating of the sensory forces, as related to the activity of the organs of the vocal box, has not been brought about. The vocal cords do not respond to the activities in a physical manner.

5. In the analyses of the entity’s development through the earthly sojourns, here we may find much that may be of help to those that were in the associations of the entity during a sojourn in the earth’s activity.

6. Through no cause of the entity’s physical self, but in meeting or to meet the needs or requirements of those in the environs where the entity’s activity was at the period, it became necessary for the entity’s activities or abilities in these directions to be hindered or brought to naught. This IMPOSED upon the entity that which made for the entity’s inability in the present, through those conditions as the entity imposed or had imposed upon others.

7. Hence we find a condition in the present which may be termed a MENTAL inhibition. This is not the indication of a physical-mental derangement; rather an INHIBITION that has made for the uncontrolling of the emotions.

8. Then, it is of the mental-emotional body that these conditions are being met, as it were, under a karmic influence in the present.

9. Since much has BEEN accomplished in the physical coordination in the body, we find that these conditions may be the more materially aided in the present by inhibiting the mental forces through psychopathic or hypnotic impressions - to arouse the MENTAL FORCES to the natural resistances in the body.

10. For, as we find, while these conditions are under such a period that these may make for the greater activity in these directions, this - as we would find - would bring the better reactions NOW, or under the present conditions.

11. This should be done by those, then, who may ENABLE the body to give the greater expression of its OWN WILL influence upon the activities of the coordinating forces between the sympathetic and cerebrospinal IMPULSE reflection in the vocal activities of the body.

12. As we find, it would only require some eight to ten such treatments to induce the body - so long as it is in the PHYSICAL health as in the present - to overcome the condition.

14. (Q) Can the hypnotic suggestions be given by those in charge now? (A) This, as we find, may be super-imposed by the spiritual reactions, but there is needed as much of the MENTAL and PHYSICAL reaction as the spiritual IMPORT upon the body.

If such suggestions were made continuously as the body loses itself in sleep, it would require somewhat a longer manner or way; but may be done by those in charge.

15. (Q) What hypnotist would you suggest as being the correct one to give the treatments to this body? (A) As we find, such an one as Taylor - Chas. Taylor, New York - 54th St. - 57th - 54 St., as we find, is the address [Charles Francis Taylor Analytic Psychologist, 44 W. 57, NYC]; or Daniel [Charles L. Daniel, Hopkinsville, Ky.] or such as that.

16. (Q) If the decision is for those in charge to give the suggestions, just what suggestion should be given? (A) That there would be, through the very vital forces of self, the raising of that vibration necessary for making coordinations in the activities of the responses in speech; THROUGH the powers of the spiritual activity in the body, in HIS name!

17. (Q) If the hypnotist is decided on, how often should the treatments be given, and how long? (A) About every day for the first three or four days; then it may be every other day for the rest of the time. Ten to twelve such treatments should eliminate the greater cause of the conditions.

18. (Q) How long should the body be kept in the hypnotic state for treatment? (A) From an hour to two hours.

19. (Q) Would the hypnotist be able to arouse the will to speak? (A) To overcome that inhibition that is caused by the motivative activity in the impulsive forces of the body itself; yes.

20. (Q) What should be the suggestion to be given by the hypnotist? (A) This is to be very powerful and strong. Various ones use different formulas.

21. (Q) Any other suggestions for the body at this time? (A) We would keep the spiritual imports in the activities of the body, to make for a balancing in the mental and the physical activities.

22. Do that.

R1. 7/3/35 EC wrote Mrs. [959]: “It certainly was good to see you again… I do hope the suggestions this time for [146] will prove most valuable for everyone concerned.

“A letter just came from Mrs. Pope, saying she was very anxious for us to ask about karmic conditions in regard to [146]; that she hadn’t said anything to you for fear you didn’t believe in reincarnation. At least, that’s what I would gather from her letter; and it’s the very thing the rdg. touched on.

“Please let us hear just what you are able to have done about this.”

R2. 7/6/35 Mrs. [959]‘s letter to EC: “Surely ‘Great Minds Run along the Same Channels’. I have not been able to get the theme or subject of reincarnation off my mind since getting the reading. Just what I believe or do not believe I do not know. I want to believe and live any thing that will make me more fitted to meet the problems that come day by day and still be a help to those with whom I am associated. I have studied very little on the subject of reincarnation, in fact about all I know is what I have learned from the bulletins and reports on readings, etc. If you have any books that I may read on the subject I would certainly appreciate the loan of them.

“Please explain briefly what the ‘karmic condition’ means. I have tried to find something on it but have no library near, and my vocabulary is not large enough to take that in.

“I wrote to Dr. Taylor yesterday, the copy I am sending you. I am going to try to follow the suggestions, if possible. Will let you know what I hear from him.

“I suppose my total ignorance on the subject made Mrs. Pope think I did not believe in reincarnation, which I am not surprised.

“Yes, it did seem good to see you folks again, some how there is a definite tie of friendship existing between folks who try to help one another, aside from their own individual personality, this I feel very keenly for the whole Cayce family (of course this includes Gladys).

“Do you think it necessary to have another check reading to find more about the karmic condition that Mrs. Pope asks about?

“Hope to be able to give you a report on Dr. Taylor soon,” [959]

R3. 7/12/35 EC’s reply to [146]‘s mother, Mrs. [959]:

“It was fine to see you again. We miss you when you don’t come around or let us hear from you.

“Now, on the subject of reincarnation, I really know very little except what the information in the readings has furnished, so I am asking Hugh Lynn to send you what he has on hand and anything that he feels might be of help to you at this time.

“Karma is quite different from the standpoint of the readings than from the standpoint of most Theosophists, but in general it is this: If you do an error you must meet it, or - as you remember the Christ said - you must pay even to the last farthing [Mat. 5:26] [Mat. 5:18].

“Now, as a Christian we meet much of that in Christ. Let me illustrate it in [146]‘s case, for that is the one we are trying to help. First: Life is one continuous stream. That we may pass from the earthly or material consciousness doesn’t mean that the SOUL has died, only the physical body. The soul lives on, with all its faults, all its grace and good it may have done. Now, that we may all have an equal showing, God has allowed us to come again and again. The deeds done in a physical body must be met in a physical body. So now back to [146]:

“In one appearance evidently he, [146], was forced to deprive people of speech, or something like that. Now this time he must meet it. The help anyone can give him in the name of the Christ is doing the Christ work, but he is meeting his own karma. We may help him do this in the Christ, for none other can forgive, none other has the power to save except Christ in God. Do you get that?

“If you don’t get all you want from this, and from what Hugh Lynn may send you, don’t hesitate to write and we will be glad to explain all we can.

“I do hope you get the cooperation of Dr. Charles Francis Taylor. He is a very good man. Don’t let him overcharge you. Now, those two statements may sound very contradictory. They are. So are almost all people. But I think you will find him alright. I do hope he will do his part now in this and we will see results. Thanks for the copy of the letter to him. I am sending it back, as you might want the copy.

“A little later, Mrs. [959], we might have a whole Life Reading for [146], after he is better, and see what he should do with his abilities. Be sure to let us know what Dr. Taylor says - I will be anxious to hear. Love and regards from all,” Edgar Cayce

R4. 7/18/35 HLC wrote Mrs. [959]:

“Your letter of 7/6th addressed to my father was turned over to me. I have been interested in a study of the Life Readings for years and will be glad to take up with you a thorough analysis of the karmic conditions indicated in [146]‘s readings.

“Briefly, karmic condition means certain urges and influences brought over from some past incarnation. For example, I know a young man [849] who is a Catholic who is deeply interested in Mohammedianism. According to his Life Reading he was once a Mohammedan and now has very strong ties with the religious beliefs of that group. This is a karmic urge.

“Now for another example let us take a case which I mentioned to you (when you were here) similar to that of [146]: A young man [960] is unable to hear. The doctors can find no reason for this trouble, as they pronounce his ears and nervous system to be perfectly alright. The Life Reading indicates that in a past incarnation this soul was involved in the French Revolution and at that time closed his ears (so to speak) to the cries of the people. He realized his folly and later condemned himself for his attitude. This influence, this attitude of closing himself from the world registered a strong impression on his soul-mind, and this carried over to this life to bring to him now this inability to hear. A mental and psychological urge, it is true, but one that definitely has its effect on the physical condition.

“For another example, we know a young woman [275] who is afflicted in her hip. The doctors pronounce the condition cancer of the bone. The readings indicated a serious condition but one that could be checked and gradually overcome. This affliction comes from a karmic condition, an urge, an influence, which registers in the physical. At one time this woman laughed at the suffering of the Christian martyrs in the Roman arena. Especially did she laugh at an enemy whose limb was torn by the lion before her eyes. This made such a strong impression on the soul-mind that the condition carries over and she has to suffer and work this out in her own life.

“From the above we can draw certain conclusions:

“Karma can be both good and bad. Generally, only bad karma is referred to - and is concerned with some influence coming from a past incarnation as the result of an individual having broken a natural law. The impression is made on the soul-mind and the spiritual body, and in many cases it is so strong as to find expression in the physical condition.

“In [146]‘s case this urge is apparently from something which he was forced to do in a previous appearance which made a strong impression on his soul-mind. Karma is often built up in relations between individuals and must be worked out and understood before development can continue.

“You can well understand how the Life Readings which explain the past incarnations and the urges which come from them become very important in the development of one interested in this work. From my personal point of view the Life Reading is of greater value than the physical.

“Now the theory of reincarnation is very old. The ideas as presented through the readings differ from those given either by Theosophy or by The Order of Christian Mystics. Yet, if you care to undertake a study of the subject I would advise you to secure copies of Dr. Homer F. Curtiss’ books and also small volumes published by The Theosophical Society, by Besant and Leadbeater. These books will contain considerable explanation of the theories of rebirth and the karmic urges coming from various appearances.

“I am enclosing another copy of the April 1935 Bulletin which quotes from the Rdg. 5753-1 on reincarnation. You already have a copy but may have mislaid it. I am also enclosing my article of Jan. 1933 explaining Life Readings [GD’s note: See this recorded under 2265-1 report] which you have had before but may now be interested in reading with a new light.

“The very best way to approach this subject is for you to ask questions about the parts you do not clearly understand. I will be very glad to answer each one carefully as best I can. Books and books have been written on the subjects related to this theory of reincarnation and there are unlimited approaches. From your questions I will be able to understand just how you are approaching the subject and just how much background you need for understanding the data which we have on the subject. Send me as many questions as you care to, referring if you like to the Oct. 1933 Bulletin on Evolution of the Soul, which quotes from Rdg. 311-2 on reincarnation, and to the Life Reading article of Jan. 1933.

“We all wish for you wonderful success in carrying out [146]‘s treatments.”

R5. 10/3/35 Mrs. [959] wrote: “Dear Friends: Well, another age has passed before I could get a letter to you folk. Nevertheless I have thought a great deal about all of you.

“As soon as I got home I wrote to Dr. Taylor, and have had some bit of correspondence with him, he promised to go to Chester Heights soon as he got some other cases attended to, this time seems so long when we are so anxious. Mrs. Pope hoped to go to N.Y. the last of Sept. and intended seeing him, but have not heard that she went, have been wondering if a suggestion from you would help get him on the way. We assured him that we would reimburse him, though we do not feel like doing it in advance, in fact he said he made no charge where there could be no way, though he told what he would do it for and if he can do [146] any good, is certainly not high.

“I have read and thought a great deal about the Life readings and reincarnation. Will have to confess I am taking a great deal of it on faith, I guess I would say, as I do not, or cannot grasp it all in my dazed mind, it just seems too deep for me, though I want to give it more thought and time as I can.

“I am looking forward to the Oct. bulletin, as I am so interested in the ‘case reports’ and hope to give a complete one of [146] soon, that has been my greatest desire for some time.” [959]

R6. 10/5/35 EC wrote her that he would try to see Dr. Taylor in N.Y. soon and talk to him about [146], and:

“I don’t wonder that you become perplexed at the Life Rdgs., yet each day we have pretty positive proof, to us, of the reality of it all. Our experience, of course, can do you very little good. One of the best studies, I believe, will be to look at the difference in your own [three] children. They are of the same blood, the same environment; the same outlook is presented to them, but are they alike in their manners and ambitions? WHY NOT? Such a study will help a lot. Then read the good book [Bible] with that idea in mind, and you will find much food for thought. Let it come as your own experience, not what anyone tells you. For TRUTH grows and must be experienced; for it is a living thing, and is not for just a few but for all who seek.”

R8. 10/24/35 Mrs. [959] wrote that neither she nor Mrs. Pope had heard anything from Dr. Charles Francis Taylor in re [146]. Then:

“There is a question I wanted to ask about the subject of reincarnation. In the Life Readings have there been many, or any large percentage, who are reaping the fruits of a good, successful life in their former sojourns? Hugh Lynn told me of some who were suffering, as [146], from effects of their activities.

“You will wonder at my questions from time to time, I am sure. There is so much that comes to my mind that I wish I could discuss with some of you.”

R9. 11/4/35 EC wrote: “All those we see about us, to our minds, are enjoying the fruit of their labors, no matter what their position in life is, or so the information in the readings states. That which appears good to some of us is just a great big opportunity. For that is what life is, any way we look at it. A few of the old oft quoted verses tell us the whole story, but when interpreted in light of the idea of reincarnation they take on a very different meaning, as:

“‘As a man soweth, that shall he reap’ [Gal. 6:7]; ‘the righteous shall inherit the earth’ [Ps. 37:29]; ‘For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting’ [Gal. 6:8]; ‘Like begets like’ [Gen. ‘every seed after its kind’ etc.]; and many more that one might mention.”

R10. 11/22/35 Mrs. [959] wrote that Dr. Taylor could not take [146] unless they took him to N.Y. and it was out of the question financially:

“I simply cannot ask Mrs. Pope to take [146] to N.Y. as long as there is any other way, though I will try to do it myself rather than give up… Mrs. Pope writes that [146] is so well and happy and has not had a spell for a long time. They are getting farther apart all the time, I think.”

R11. 1/15/36 Mrs. [959] wrote: “I tried to make it plain to Dr. Taylor that it was not a ‘thank you’ job, but I did not feel like making any advance payment. So from what he said I think his wife must have been a little to blame, for in the beginning I think it was his intention to go to [146]. Mrs. Pope writes that [146] is so well and it looks like we just can’t stop. We have done all suggested in the rdgs. since Sept. 1930. Still I cannot give up. If we can get [146] to talking it will make the greatest Bulletin report yet, and I think will help me to present your work more successfully to others. For the first thing they want to know is, ‘Is your boy talking?’ What do you think of a Life Rdg., from the fact that we have never been able to carry out the last suggestion of hypnotism? I will do as you think best. It is all so perplexing to me, but I do hope and pray to get results.” [She spoke of finding another hypnotist.]

R12. 1/20/36 EC wrote: “I understand that Mr. Charles L. Daniel, the other hypnotist mentioned in the rdg., has moved to Calif… I don’t believe he goes in for hypnotism as a business [as he is a practicing lawyer], so he might really be more interested than another in the real help that may be derived. From what I have heard [mostly from Thomas B. House, Jr. and Gray Salter of Hopkinsville, Ky.], he has done some wonderful things, and very quickly, too. You might write him. In the meantime, when we get [146]‘s birth data from you, we will attempt the Life Rdg. and see what is suggested.”

R13. 3/27/36 Mrs. [959] wrote: “Charles Daniel has no idea of coming east any time soon. Mrs. Pope hopes to go to N.Y. soon and will see Dr. Taylor herself. She would like him to visit Rosehill School for some of the others as well as [146]. Mrs. Pope has been ill again. I hope she will have a rdg. for herself.”

R14. 5/12/36 She obtained 1170-2 for her husband [[146]‘s father].

R15. 6/13/36 She requested 959-1 for herself.

R16. 7/2/36 Mother, Mrs. [959], wrote: “I think probably we will have to bring [146] home [to West Va.] sometime in the near future, and if we could locate a hypnotist near here it would be so good.”

R17. 8/23/36 She requested 1263-1, also: “You know I wrote sometime ago about Mrs. Pope being ill. Well, to make a long story short, I could get no satisfaction so went up there the first week this month to find Mrs. Pope a total wreck (as it seems to me) and in Ocean City, Md. trying to recuperate. I got my information from our friend Dr. Elisha T. Kirk [D.O.]; probably would not have gotten any satisfaction had I not seen him. It seems she has had some trouble for two years or more and had gotten in the habit of some drugs. They could not tell me when she might be back in school so I brought [146] home. I feel he, as well as some others, has lost ground during this time.

“[146] has stopped making any effort toward talking, just sits off to himself all the time. He is really too quiet for his good, I think. We had been communicating with Dr. Stewart’s Home Training School for some time, so we took him there - it’s at Frankfort, Ky., and a very lovely place, much more of a school and more things for them to do. In fact we were delighted with the outlook, except the price is almost prohibitive, but the Lord has been so good in helping us through so much that we are trusting to get through this with His help.

“When we left Rosehill School with [146] it left only 13 pupils, so I imagine other parents felt as we did. But I am sorry for Mrs. Pope, as fine as she is, she must have had burdens we knew nothing of or she never could resort to that sort of ‘relief.’ I do hope that she can soon get hold of herself and be well again very soon. I shall always love her, for she has been exceedingly good to us, that we cannot repay soon.”

R18. 11/19/36 She wrote: “I have not heard anything from Mrs. Pope.

“[146] seemed improved when I visited him in early Oct. It will be some time before I can visit him again.”

R19. 2/20/37 She wrote requesting 1342-1, saying: “We are all well and [146] is so happy in school but no effort toward speech. Hear Mrs. Pope is in Alabama.”

R20. 5/9/39 She requested 1170-3 for her husband [[146]‘s father].

R21. 2/20/40 She wrote: “We have [146] home with us now. He is happy. His mental condition is not much improved but physically he seems about as usual.”

R22. 1/27/41 She requested 1170-4 for her husband [[146]‘s father].

R23. 12/23/43 She obtained 1170-5 for her husband [[146]‘s father].

R24. 7/60 In Dr. Walter N. Pahnke’s survey of 96 cases of Epilepsy he stated: Case [146] was classified in Group 3. The reading itself stated that the case was not true epilepsy, but mainly a karmic condition in the mental and spiritual body. From the description given the case appeared more like mental retardation or birth injury, and not epilepsy.

The physical seems to be as near good as possible except for the jerkings and occasionally a real epileptic seizure. She has some questions we have formulated. I want to ask you what you know about karma and how it is affecting [146] and those who are working for his welfare. I do not know what Mrs. [959] knows along that line and hesitated to speak about it. Could we ask a question relating to his karma if she has the rdg.?”

B4. 7/1/35 Mrs. [959] visited EC and talked about the spiritual rdg. for [146] (See the Suggestion) and was present for it.
