This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 7th day of July, 1939, in accordance with request made by the father - Mr. [849], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 4:10 to 4:35 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. Washington, D.C.

1. GC: You will have before you [1521], born January 14, 1938, - Womans Hospital, 141 W. 109th St., New York, N.Y., [[1102] and [849]] the parents of the entity, desire to be informed as to the manner in which they can best combat the adverse influences which will be active during the period from the 18th to the 30th month of the entity’s present earthly life. This is in accordance with the warning given through this channel on January 22, 1938. You will answer the questions which may be submitted, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [1521]; together with the information that has been indicated as to adverse influences for the entity from the eighteenth month to the thirtieth month of this particular experience.

3. These as we find are reflected in the conditions respecting the physical welfare of the entity, and would have to do with those things which would affect the body particularly through the glandular system.

4. Hence as we find, the particular precautions to be taken at this period are as to diet, as to the activity and associations with those where there may be the influence of an epidemic, or the natures of same that especially involve the glandular forces of the system.

5. For these come under the adverse force with the astrological aspects, and are thus only inclinations or tendencies.

6. Hence we would take a small quantity of Atomidine as a preventative, - which will prevent also those inclinations for warts or moles - that to the entity in an experience before were very adverse! The dosage would be less, and not more than, a minim at a time, in a spoonful or two spoonsful of water. Make it less than a drop more often than one drop, you see; and this would be given about twice each week - Tuesdays and Thursdays being the better times.

7. This as we find will not only be as a preventative, but will purify the glandular system so as to resist adverse influences; combined, of course, with those directions under that influence as may come from Samuel - through the prayer.

8. Do that.

9. (Q) What precautions can be taken to guard the feet and limbs of the child, to offset any tendencies toward infections or injuries? (A) The taking of the Atomidine would be the precaution for the same character of nature, - or the infantile effect upon the body.

And taking these precautions as indicated would lessen the conditions, even if there were to be an exposure to same.

10. (Q) What should the diet be in the present? (A) That for the natural, normal, growing child.

11. (Q) What other precautions of a healthful nature should be taken during this period? (A) These as we find would cover all those inclinations or tendencies. To be sure, right at this particular time, there needs to be the cleansing of the system, owing to the exact period through which it is passing at present, - that is, that there is not an upsetting in the digestive system, see?

12. (Q) What special mental and spiritual training should be given during this period? (A) This is the beginning of the awakening to the comparative emotions for the body, and these are well to be kept in that way to aid in giving full expression of the imaginative influences as well as the emotions of the body - that are aroused by the awareness of relationships as the body finds same, or entity finds same, in its development for COMPARISONS of this or that.

For, as will be seen, there will be gradually - through these particular periods - the activities of the mind in such a manner as to show how the body-mind begins to expand by comparison, see?

13. (Q) What is meant by the warning that the very causes of the individual’s physical, mental and material emotions must be given consideration from a spiritual angle, and how can this be observed? (A) Too oft, with the imaginative influences and forces of the body as it awakes to the awareness of a physical AND spiritual emotion, there is the training AWAY FROM the individuality of the entity that is exercised through the urges which arise innately in the experience of the entity through the awareness period, to what may be called the personality of the individual, see? Hence the warning is that the entity should be allowed to give EXPRESSION of those emotions, or experiences that it will gradually begin to describe, - as to the hearing, seeing, feeling in its activity, - and that there be the explanation that these arise within the self from the SPIRITUAL and not from the bodily emotions alone.

This, then, is that which will enable a greater influence of the spirituality of the urge to become so much a part of the entity; enabling same to be as real in its experience as its daily life.

14. (Q) Is the soul which is/was hoped might come in the place of this entity, and as a male, that which was Samuel, the son of Hannah? (A) As indicated, as outlined, the prayer to and through the guiding force of Samuel will aid in the help to Samuel’s mother.

15. (Q) If so, is this the soul which will aid the entity and to which the entity can pray for guidance? (A) As just indicated. This has been indicated before; it is indicated here.

For, as some would have it, the hierarchies are not unmindful of the developing of souls through the experiences in the earth. Hence such is not OUT of the ordinary, but the natural spiritual development in and through the very association and the prayer and care of those to whom such a soul is entrusted.

For, as has been indicated, there is - to be sure - something of a choice of the entity seeking expression. In the material world and materiality, it is more often trained or convinced AWAY from its natural spiritual import. For, is it not for spiritual development that each soul enters? and not merely for mental OR material or physical?

For in the Pattern, which is the way and the manner, we find that these phases are ever considered as one; yet the Mother kept these and pondered them in her heart.

What meaneth this? save as to that injunction which would be given to every parent: Ponder well the expressions that arise from the emotions of a developing child; for, as has been forever given, train them in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from the way.

16. (Q) Explain why the change of entity and the change of sex took place, between the time when a son was indicated through this channel, on September 23, 1937, and the birth of the child. (A) This, as has been indicated, was given that there might be the greater opportunity for the developing of the entity Hannah UNDER the direction of Samuel, with the aid AND direction of thought by the parents. This was deemed by the seeker as the channel for expression.

17. (Q) What is the mission of the entity in this experience? (A) That the glory of the Father in the Son may be the more magnified in the lives of those the entity meets.

As the entity brought into the experience of a peoples a new form, a new character of a determining factor between the peoples and the worship of the living God, so may the entity in this experience bring into experience - through the preparation of its body, its mind for the creating or bringing into conception - an activity that may, AS the son then, again revolutionize that relationship of man to the awareness of his relationship to God.

For the offspring of this entity will anoint a holy one!

R1. 10/30/39 Parents obtained a Physical Reading for her - See 1521-3.

R2. 10/28/41 Father, [849]‘s ltr.: “[1521] was discussing with me today what happens to cats and dogs when they die. She was worried about their meals - who fed them and gave them drink. I assured her the angels did that. We talked over the cycle - coming down from heaven, living here, and then going back.

“[1521] looked sad.

“‘Why do we do that, [849]?’ she said. ‘Why did we come down here?’

“‘Don’t you like it here,’ I said.

“She hesitated. Finally she said, ‘Sometimes - I like it.’

“Tonight I had to speak to her about being careful. I used the phrase ‘Be careful’ several times.

”‘[849],’ she said very soberly, ‘If you say that once more I’m going off to another cottage.’”

R4. 8/10/43 “[1521] had her IQ test the other day - scored 152

• that means a genius, so they say - she is learning to play chess, and swims pretty well now.”

R5. 1/53 Her father, [849], died during one of the periods which her reading indicated would be very difficult for her. She was very close to her father.

R6. 9/60 We heard that [1521] had become very successful as a newspaper staff reporter.

R7. 6/61 We heard that she had recently gotten married (in the Catholic Church) to a motion picture producer.

R8. 3/23/64 She gave birth to a baby son whom she named for her father, Mr. [849]. [Could this be Samuel!!?]

R9. 7/15/65 GD’s note: Mrs. [903] told me today that [1521]‘s husband was a Russian Jew, about 20 yrs. older than [1521], who had spent many years in China. He had joined the Catholic Church before their marriage, with [1521]‘s mother, Mrs. [1102], sponsoring him. He did this hoping that Mrs. [1102] would then approve their marriage, making it easier for [1521]. However, she did not approve. Eventually they married without her consent and moved to another city.

R10. 7/15/65 GD’s ltr. to [1521]:

A.R.E. VIRGINIA BEACH VA.

Dear [1521]:-

[903] tells me that I should mail to you the enclosed copy of the two Life Readings which your father obtained for you when you were a baby. I had the urge to do this when I heard about your baby - Hugh Lynn said to write and ask you - but I kept putting it off.

I hope some day you can visit Virginia Beach and read the correspondence which your father had with Edgar Cayce over a period of twenty years. We have it in the files here. He, your father, was truly a great soul. Excuse me, I mean he IS a great soul - for I am sure he is still aware of you and his grandson, the great hopes and dreams he had for you.

I look forward to seeing you again and meeting your husband and that darling son.

R11. 7/26/65 [1521]‘s ltr. to GD:

Dear Gladys,

Thank you so much for sending me the copies of my two life readings. I’m glad [903] suggested it, for I’m very glad to have them.

Many years ago, I once came upon copies of my first reading and also my mother’s reading among some papers at the house on … Street. I was still in high school at the time and was, understandably, both impressed and disturbed by what I read. Several times I wanted to reread my own but was never able to find it again. Now that I am older and much, much wiser, I’m just that much more pleased to see the material again. When I first saw it, I didn’t know what to make of it. Now it seems clearly a challenge.

You may be interested to learn that my husband is much more than a motion picture producer. He is also, and has been for many years, a highly competent student in the same branches of occult philosophy that interested my father. Since our marriage, we have acquired from [1156] most of my father’s library. It is amazing how much duplication there is between these and […]‘s own books. We also have the unfinished pencil manuscript of my father’s last book, the one on prophecy on which he was working at his death. It is our hope to be able to do something with this. So far, the opportunity has not been present. For one thing, much preliminary study will be required of me. And our life has been in such disorder that I have not been able to even begin. I don’t want to begin such a large project until the unfortunate but necessary “material side” of our life is under control. The Jews insist that such study be put off until age 40 (and not even then are women permitted to engage in it - although I know some who do anyway). So, perhaps it is best not to hurry. [GD’s note: Evidently she has joined the Jewish religion.]

As for […] [baby son], it is best not to get our hopes up too high, of course. We will try to do our best, but children must make their own way as soon as they are able. Parents get very few years in which to mold a child, and all one can do is work hard, be vigilant and pray. Yet it is amazing how early in life even the most subtle of parental influences begin to show in a child. I can’t decide whether our playground is what it appears to be on the surface or whether it is a nightmare. The fingers of both hands are not enough to count off the future occupants of psychiatrists’ couches.

Fortunately, […] does not seem headed in that direction. Even making allowances for the natural prejudice of parents, it is clear that he is an unusual child. He is much more outgoing and friendly than the others. Even at 16 months, he stands up for his own rights and goes his own way. It takes a major catastrophe to send him running for Mama. He is also exasperatingly capable, physically and mentally. He is as agile as a monkey and very strong - is complete master of the slide. Yet, he never bullies. He can nearly always find a solution to the problems he encounters - solutions like climbing on chairs to reach high objects. He remembers everything. And there is nothing for it but to be good-natured and encouraging (within the limits of safety - which he casually disregards). He adjusts beautifully to new situations - only breaking down into crankiness when he is tired. Altogether, he is a being far superior to either of his parents. He is a constant source of amazement to us and to all who meet Him.

All this makes him rough on us, of course. He must be watched constantly. Otherwise he will be off doing some daredevil thing, or wandering out of the playground into the street to explore. Other mothers can sit and chat with their friends, but not me. Still if we can make a good and kind person out of him, it will have more than been worth it. Exhausting as it is, I would gladly have six children like […] For he sets example to me as often as the other way around. (There’s the reading again.)

We would all like very much to visit Virginia Beach. I would especially like you and the Cayces to meet […] and […]. I hope we will be able to do it soon. But as I said, our life is a bit chaotic. Our experiences in … have not been pleasant, and the future is very uncertain. […] is now making a film on […] for the Senate (U.S.) Committee on …, for which I wrote the script. It has been hard on us, even though we surely needed the money, because […] has been home only on weekends for six months now. We are nearly finished now, but what we will be doing from now is up in the air. So it is difficult to plan.

Thank you again - very much - for the readings. Also, for some time I have been meaning to write and ask about membership in the Association and subscribing to the newsletter. Please let me know what the fees are so that I can send a check.

R13. 7/19/74 Letter to Gladys Turner:

“After having read the information from the readings on Hannah and Samuel given in MAN CROWNED KING, I thought you might be interested in the following experience. My family (wife and 2 boys aged 4 and 6) were living in Houston when my wife got pregnant with a semi-planned child. That is, I was happy to have another child, my wife was not. The night after the child was conceived and before we had any idea that my wife might be pregnant, I had an experience during sleep. Suddenly my mind, in sleep, became very alert and a strong, male voice said to me, ‘His name is Samuel.’ I had never heard the voice before and it spoke with no regional accent. (I subsequently read the Aquarian Gospel and was startled to learn that the angel Gabriel said ‘His name is John’ and ‘His name is Jesus’ when he came to Elizabeth and Mary.)

“My wife was somewhat distressed about naming the child Samuel, after I told her the experience, but she gradually accepted the name. I told our minister and several others about the experience.

“At this time, I had been in an A.R.E. study group about a year and had been meditating regularly. During the following months, keeping in mind the recommendation from the readings, I meditated twice a day and prayed especially for the incoming soul. When it was obvious that the child would be born in mid-March, under the sign of Pisces, I was concerned. (I thought the fishes going in opposite directions signified confusion.) So I read what Edgar Cayce said about Pisces being the sign of the prophets and was comforted. Nevertheless I asked for more assurance in my next meditation time.

I asked, several times, ‘Is there anything special about this child?’ Suddenly the same voice which I had heard nine months before said, ‘Samuel was a prophet.’

“Samuel [D…] [M…] was born in Houston at […?] A.M. on March 16, 1971. He is growing very well. He is small but well-built and well-coordinated. He is very loving and appears quite intelligent. The strength of his will is awesome. He is essentially fearless (except around water) and keeps us very busy. He readily joins in the family prayers and has recognized pictures of Jesus for quite a while now. I have seen nothing from him that would suggest he is not a great soul.

“Please feel free to use or exclude any of the description. (I probably mentioned irrelevant details in trying to say what was important.) I appreciate very much the time you spent with me as well as the value of your thoughtful suggestions.”
