Commission Basis) This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 15th day of March, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [1551], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Dr. Henry Hardwicke.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 10:55 to 11:15 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, Mrs. [1551].
-
(You know, it would be very well for the body to change the odors about the room from almond to lavender, and it would be much better.)
-
Now as we find, there are disturbing conditions which prevent the better normal physical reactions.
-
While as we find these have not as yet assumed a great deal of disturbance physically, the reactions to the mental and nerve forces of the body do disturb - and without some precautions or corrections may gradually grow into greater disturbing conditions.
-
(This is a very lovely, very attractive body in many ways.)
-
As we find, in times back there has been some irritation produced in or with the pelvic organs that has brought about the fold or scar tissue.
-
This, then, makes for pressures upon the nervous system, upsetting the body in varied ways; as will be seen, and especially through the reactions of the nervous system as related to the EMOTIONAL body.
-
For as the effects of the pressure are upon the glandular forces through which there is the passing of the activity of the psychic influences, these disturbances become oft as much psychic as physical.
-
Yet as we find physical conditions are existent, or corrections need to be made to bring in the physical system the more perfect channel through which there may be the activity of the physical and mental and spiritual reactions of this body.
-
These, then, are the conditions as we find them with this body, [1551] we are speaking of:
-
THE BLOOD SUPPLY, this indicates there is a very good reaction in the assimilating system. Yet the very nature or character of the pulsation indicates the pressure which has been in the nervous system, causing often too great a flow of the lymph through portions of the system.
-
Hence the body at times becomes easily depressed; and these conditions would be as much from a wholly physical reaction - such as too little sleep, too much exertion - as from the expressions or activities in relation to individuals.
-
Yet the physical reaction produces a tiring upon the system, and quite a bit of disturbance at periods. For as this becomes a portion of the disturbance, these would gradually grow unless corrections were made.
-
IN THE NERVOUS SYSTEM, as we find, as has been indicated, while it is a physical reaction arising from a physical conditions, the pressure upon the sympathetic nervous system brings about rather a disturbance in the nerve forces - or these become the sources of irritation through the physical condition existent as has been indicated.
-
THEN, AS TO THE ACTIVITY UPON THE ORGANS OF THE BODY, WE FIND, these may become more and more accentuated, or they may become localized, unless disturbances are checked.
-
But in the present they are affected in such natures that the body, through the psychic pressure, becomes aware of the activity of involuntary nerve reaction. As may be indicated: Periods arise when the body realizes it is LISTENING for it knows not what! There are times when there appears to be speech or voice or noise or movement of which the body is not WHOLLY aware, but of which it is merely conscious.
-
These become disconcerting to the mental reactions of the body. Again the body feels or imagines conditions in relationships to individuals it may only be passing, or may be in company with, without there being even a word said or even a look given.
-
All of these are accentuations, as is seen, of the activity of the sensory reactions through which awareness is conveyed to the consciousness of the physical body.
-
These arise rather then from the location and the character of the specific disturbance which has been indicated.
-
AS WE FIND, THEN, IN MAKING CORRECTIONS FOR THE PHYSICAL FORCES, and which will - as indicated - react upon the mental as well as the psychic or the soul forces of the body:
-
First begin with - and have - three to eight good GENERAL NEUROPATHIC adjustments, such as may be had from Miller; THOROUGH, over the GENERAL system, with SPECIFIC adjustments in the lumbar and in the sacral portions of the cerebrospinal system.
-
These as we find would best be had every other day until six are taken, you see.
-
Then take a treatment from the use of the Violet Ray, using the small vaginal applicator. Take ONE treatment for three minutes, you see; not too strong in the beginning. Take this by self; not given by another - take it self! Do not take this too close, of course, to the menstrual period - let it be at least a week from the Period, see?
-
Rest then from the treatments for five to eight days. Then take six more adjustments, NEUROPATHICALLY; that is following the nerves along the cerebrospinal system; coordinating those from the 3rd and 4th cervical, the 3rd and 5th dorsal, the 9th dorsal, 12th dorsal, and as indicated the more specific in the lumbar and sacral portion of the body - SIX more of these.
-
Then have one more application, the next day, of the Violet Ray vaginal treatment.
-
Use then AFTER the Period an Atomidine douche; the proportions being a teaspoonful of the commercial strength Atomidine to a quart and a half of water for the douche.
-
Then the next Periods have another treatment or adjustment after same.
-
And we should find near normal forces for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through with this Reading.

R1. 3/15/38 HLC’s letter to EC: ”…The lady who had the Physical and Life today phoned me that she had an unusual experience on the morning reading. I asked her to send it in - in writing…” [See Par. R2, below.]
R2. 3/15/38 [1551]‘s letter to HLC:
Dear Mr. Cayce -
I thank you for the readings which you gave me today. I was very conscious of your work, particularly in the physical reading. I could have NO doubts whatsoever of the COMPETENT work you were doing as it was being done.
It seemed to me that your work continued past eleven thirty
- to almost noon in fact. I seemed to be in an almost semi-trance condition, yet very vividly conscious. There seemed to be a swift, competent, searching “light-object” which began its examination around my left leg at the knees, moved horizontally across my throat several times swiftly, then searched thru my head, then examined my kidneys and found trouble there (the kidney investigation seemed to take most time) - thru back to the throat, right chest - then quite a lengthy investigation in the head again (the head seemed constricted, tightened).
I reacted to this experience in this way: with interest, amazement joy and faith. March 15th will remain a Red Letter Day of Faith for me. I thought of Man’s Infinite possibilities, and “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God & His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you” kept coming to mind.
I shall look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely
R3. 3/18/38 EC’s letter to [1551]:
Dear Miss [1551]
Thank you for yours of 15th, thanks for writing your experience. Recently have had several that have been kind enough to write us their experience at the time of the reading - few if any as definite as your own, do hope can talk with you some time about this. Just hope you get a world of good out of each of the readings, and feel sure you will.
Am sure from the information you are quite Psychic your self, and this experience would seem to justify that statement about you.
Think you will find a lot in the LIFE reading also while may have to study that. Am sure there is a lot of help there. There is one question want to ask you - but this will have to wait until meet you, so it is not all so important - and yet is and isn’t, but will see what we shall see.
Thanks again and again. Let me know what you think of the life reading - also the physical when you read it.
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
R4. 3/19/38 HLC’s letter to EC: ”…Miss [1551] came in yesterday after noon and we went round and round on both her physical and life readings. The physical was a perfect check all the way through. She is in a pretty nervous shape and the urges from the past incarnations are not helping much right at this point. She told me she had written you about the point of light. The time on that didn’t completely check, but time is a peculiar factor so far as we are concerned anyway. I will try to get Dr. Miller to give us a complete report on the case from the examination end as it checks up so nicely.
R5. 3/21/38 [1551]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Besides thanking you for your kind and interesting letter of March 18th, I wish you also to know my appreciation of two hours given to me by your son in New York at which time he tried to throw additional light on the physical and life readings. I greatly appreciate both your and his endeavors and wishes to make these readings of their utmost value.
Dr. Hardwick has these readings now, and I will get them back from him after he has had time to look them over and make comments which I would like to have from him.
I have told you all that I can about the physical readings, as I cannot appraise them from knowledge, but only from the fruits of their use. Dr. Hardwick is my doctor and I feel that he most probably will have no disagreement with them as he seems to have utmost confidence in their value. Personally my only thought on the subject of getting treatments from any source is this: that if there is not a cell in our body over a year old I cannot but believe that if we know physiologically that within a year at most that every cell in our body can be a new and healthy cell if we will not destroy it by knowing it is not a new and healthy cell, then I cannot see why that very knowledge alone cannot make us into new and completely well entities as far as the physical body is concerned. I think also that if it applies to the physical it also applies to the mental and spiritual. And that it can apply to the extent that we are in possession of this knowledge. This however covers very recent discoveries of thought on my part, and yet seems to me to be the most important with which to reckon that could ever be discovered. I should like to have an opportunity to know what you think about it. I shall most probably have the treatments exactly as outlined in your letter. I notice that at the end of the physical reading you note that with the treatments as outlined that this “body should become NEAR normal”. From this I presume that the difficulty is that of dead tissue which could not be replaced by any mechanics of any doctor, and therefore a difficulty which could not be completely overcome. My thought expressed in the beginning of this paragraph would not be limited this way. The entity by such knowledge as I have suggested, would be not near normal but would be entirely normal… If the premise and the laws behind it were true. Of these things I know nothing as have only very recently begun to think on such things.
With regard to my reactions at the time of your reading I may have neglected to add that I had reason (physical reaction) to believe and know that you had without doubt competently discovered the seat of the trouble and ALSO ITS REMEDY. This I can easily explain in detail if I ever have the pleasure of meeting you. I wrote these reactions to you at the suggestion of your son, to whom I had phoned immediately after the reading due to my enthusiasm and wonder at my reactions during the reading. I am glad if by doing so it has pleased you. I do not know to what extent I may be psychic. I will be very glad to answer any question that you may ask me at any time.
One paragraph [Par. 2] that neither your son or I understood in the physical reading [1551-1] was a reference to changing the odors of the room from almond to lavender. So far as I know there were not physical odors in the room at all. [Rest of her letter used in 1551-2 Reports.]
R6. 3/28/38 EC’s reply see under 1551-2 Reports.
R7. 8/18/38 [1551]‘s letter to EC:
… Street, New York City
Dear Mr. Cayce -
Would you be kind enough to send me a copy of your instructions to physician given during my physical reading of March 15/38 -
Till this time I have not had the opportunity to take the treatments - and now I find I have misplaced the instructions. Therefore I would appreciate a copy of the instructions.
Thanks a lot.
Sincerely, [1551] N.Y.C.
R8. 8/23/38 GD’s note: We sent her the extracts from 1551-1 for Dr. Mary Miller’s treatments.
R9. 9/1/38 She requested emergency Physical Reading for her son, [1677], saying: “I have taken the first half of the treatments outlined for me from Dr. Mary Miller [D.C.], and feel that she has helped me very much. I have six yet to take.”
R10. 5/31/40 Her brother secured Physical Reading for his sister-in-law, Miss [2270].
R11. 9/26/41 She referred Mr. [2592] for Physical Reading.
R12. 1/11/42 “I am glad of the opportunity to set aside a time each day for prayer for divine guidance. Let me hear from you. This being relative to your letter of Jan. 8th [See under 2678-1 Background].
R13. 7/29/42 She requested a second Physical Reading, saying: “I rec’d and have read thru A SEARCH FOR GOD. It is a book to be kept and read and re-read and I am grateful to have it - I shall also loan it to any to whom I’m directed to loan it.”
R14. 8/5/42 See 1551-3, a second Physical Reading in re vaginal hemorrhaging due, her doctor thought, to a miscarriage and possible fibroid tumor.

B1. 3/13/38 [1551]‘s letter:
PHYSICAL READING
I seem unduly apathetic with regard to living and my work, sort of burnt-out, boredom and weariness replacing zest and enthusiasm. No sustained emotional strength.
Often very depressed and fearful, except on occasional days when I seem to approach normal balance. Worst periods of depression seem to precede menstrual period, lasting week to ten days before period.
Mind seems to wander too easily. Hard to concentrate, a very far-off and drowsy interest in things. Inertia and apathy instead of alertness.
Not adjusted to companionship of people. They tire me too easily, feel exhausted with people - get nervous meeting people or talking with them. They seem to exhaust me. Seek refuge in books but have no detailed retentive memory of what I have read.
