1. EC: Yes we have the body, the enquiring mind, and those conditions as surround the body. Ready for questions.

My dear Miss [1742],

I had your letter of the 3rd, and we attempted to keep the appointment on the 7th, but for some reason (which we have never been able to figure out through the years) we failed to get anything. Now, I do not know the cause of this. POSSIBLY, it would be better if you were to make some definite questions as to what you wish to know, either as regarding the physical, mental or spiritual attitude; or you could have the life reading - I don’t know whether you think anything of those or not. They are rather hard to explain. They are more like what is ordinarily termed the astrological reading, but are not that at all. Won’t you please do this? and we will make another appointment for the morning of Wednesday, September 2nd, between 11:00 and 12:00 o’clock Eastern Standard Time. Of course, should you wish the Life Reading, it will only be necessary for the full name given at birth, the exact day, month and year of birth, and exact place of Birth - and would not be necessary to know your exact location during the time appointed, as it would be for the other reading with questions. In either case, however, I think it would be better for you to ask definite questions. If this time is satisfactory, let us know - and whatever your wishes are, we will try to comply with them.

I wish we could talk over these matters. From what you say, I am sure your experience with the various phases of life presented by various groups has been most interesting, and that you would see SOMETHING in this that would be of interest to you also. All of Mr. [378]‘s family [[275], [255]] seem to have become very much interested in the work. Some of them have been here quite often. [275] spent some little time here, as did her mother [255] off and on. Most of them have had physical as well as Life Readings, and seem to have gotten something from them that at least has been of interest, and I hope worth while.

Battle Creek San. B.C., Mich.

My dear Mr. Cayce,-

Perhaps I really KNOW, - my own lacks and negative points, - and have tried to overcome them steadily, - so that a Reading, might not have given me anything NEW. - Physically,

• I am - of course, - far more fit, - since this summer’s health regime. - I lack in red blood corpuscles, and must go on living the simple life, - so as to reach my normal weight of 165. - I am going to stay, - here, - until I reach 175 lbs. - only six lbs. more, - to lose, - so I may be off, - in a week, - or two.

Then, - I would not know, exactly, - where I would be. - So a Life Reading would interest me very much.

My MAIN troubles is, - that I do not exactly know what - to do - with my acquired studies. Of course, - I USE, all I learned, - every day, - and have overcome many physical conditions. But I would like to express a little more, - altho’ that may be a natural unfoldment as I grow in greater strength of mind and body. - I DO feel stronger and clearer,

• and more alert, - as I keep on. - Now - I am going to ask a few practical questions, - about your work. - Do you give lecture courses, - or instruction? If I came to Virginia Beach, - this winter, - could I have some lessons, - or do some Research work etc? - Also - I would like to live reasonably, - as I spent too much, - out West, - and as you know, - the business has payed no dividends, - this year. -

Mrs. [255] suggested - “The Cavalier” - but - I hear from people, - up here - that it is expensive - and the least asked - is ten dollars, - a day - Much too much, - especial- ly, - as I still wish to diet. - They mentioned a “Princess Anne” hotel, - I believe. But perhaps one could board somewhere - altho’ - I WOULD like my own bath, - having done without one all summer, because of treatment expenses.

But my main question, for the Reading, - is: “What can I do to use my unfoldment for others?” or, - “Do I still need to unfold in an individual way, - before helping others in any definite way and my Birthday, - was: - OCTOBER 15th 1883, - at NOON, - on STATEN ISLAND, - in - Stapleton, - (Court St.) a few blocks - down hill, - from my brother’s new home - now Greater New York, of course.

Mr. Edgar Cayce, - VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA

My dear Mr. Cayce -

I am, Mr. [378]‘s sister. My sister-in-law, Mrs. [255] - gave me your address, - and told me about your Readings. In fact, I have been interested ever since [275] has been down at Virginia Beach. - Last summer my sister Mrs. […] was at Ognaga Lake - and you read for her little daughter, - [5589].

With me, - the main question - is, - what to do NEXT. - I was healed of asthma and other conditions about sixteen years and have been interested in New Thought, and like studies - ever since. In fact - I began to study Theosophy while still at home.

No doubt - you will realize - that my life has been a struggle for realization all along, with many physical obstacles and a lack of normal expression. I can say - that New Thought has done wonders - for me. - Here, at the Sanitarium - I am again learning - to live “biologically”, - as they call it. Their baths - exercises, diet - is excellent, - but - without New Thought, - I would be rather unhappy here. - I had always hoped - that some health school of a physical and mental sort, - would materialize out West - but it seems - that conditions are not right. - I have heard lectures of all sorts, - out there, - and all have helped me along. - Last year was a somewhat negative one, - and the Stars said so too - and promise better times after July, for a few years, - for Libra people. - I was quite a bit overweight so I decided to stay here for the summer, and am succeeding. - I mind the cold in the east - a great deal and the other day, - I fell asleep, wondering what would be best

• for next winter - and awoke with Virginia Beach in mind - altho’ I had really forgotten about it - on the conscious plane.

Of course - I realize that each one - has to work out - his own salvation - but there is always - the place WHERE - to be considered. - One astrologist told me - that all the planets were descending in the West - at the time of my birth - therefore - the West - would slow down my progress. It really was so - altho’ I, “saw America first.” -

My passed lives do not concern me a great deal - in fact - I would rather learn to live in the - “Now”. - I seem to lack expression - and evidently that goes hand in hand with improper circulation and congestion in parts. - But - I must again repeat, - that New Thought has helped greatly - to overcome negative conditions and to uncover subconscious tendencies. I feel that I am at a turning-point and would like to know where - I could best evolve. I believe you need to know the age. Birthday - noon -

Oct. 15th 1883, (47) on Staten Island. I weighed, at the MOST 222 lbs. - 217 when I came here now 189 lbs. - expect to reach the 175 lb. mark before leaving here and then intend to lose 10 more - next winter, as 165, - is about normal for 5 ft. 5 1/4 in. and a rather large frame. They tell me, my heart is somewhat nervous and that there are not enough red corpuscles, - but there may be, - when I leave here. - There is a congestion - between my shoulder blades - also - in the small of the back - but I am continually working it out, - and it improves. - In winter - I USUALLY freeze, - and have cold feet, and a high color. - Naturally - I know - that it is all MENTAL - or better still - lack of spirituality - I certainly have learned to be far more balanced and serene also to be more vital, but I lack “life”, - and “endurance” and conscious clarity. Am introspect, and sensitive subconsciously Feel things, that are going on around me - and get thoughts - but do not let them influence me negatively as much as I used to do so.

It will be difficult to find a proper hour. At 9.20 - I have Gymnasium, - but could be in my room - from 10.30 - 11.30. Or, - from 7.30 - 8.30 A.M.

The afternoons are rather warm - in my room - and I have massage - at 4 P.M. - But could be - at home from 2.30 - 3.30 P.M. - or from 10 - 11 P.M. during the evening.

On Saturdays - they have Sabbath - at the Sanitarium, on which day we do nothing in particular - so could take any time - which you give me. - Battle Creek - has Daylight - Saving time. Otherwise - it is the same as Virginia - is it not? - Or do we have an hour later? Hardly think so - believe Chicago and New York - are the same.

I have enclosed the check - for a Reading.

B2. 7/30/31 EC’s letter to [1742]:

Miss [1742] Battle Creek Sanitarium, Battle Creek, Michigan My dear Miss [1742]

We were very glad to have your letter of the 18th, and to know of your interest in our undertaking.

Mr. [378], your brother, was here last week-end. He is Chairman of the … of our new organization, which is carrying on the research work inspired by the information through these channels. This organization has just recently been formed and granted a charter by the State of Virginia.

Mr. [378] suggests that you have the Physical, Mental & Spiritual Reading. I had supposed from your letter that you had heard them speak so much of the Life Reading that you desired that. However, we will make the appointment for either of these. The Life Reading gives the tendencies, the cause of your individuality and personality, and as to what is the better vocation for the development spiritually in this particular experience. The Physical, Mental and Spiritual gives rather a GENERAL outline of the physical with suggestions for improvement, the outlook of the mental being with suggestions for that which will enable the individual to see themselves better, with their reflection to their own spiritual make-up. Now, which of these do you think you would want to have?

For the Life Reading it is only necessary that we have the full name given at birth, and the exact date and place of birth. For the Physical, Mental and Spiritual reading it is necessary for us to have the exact location at which you will be during the hours set for the reading.

We can make your appointment for the morning of Friday, August 7th, between 11:00 and 12:00 o’clock Eastern Standard Time. Be sure to let us know if that will be satisfactory, and which Reading you desire - with the necessary information to obtain whichever one you choose.

Dear Mr. Cayce, - Your letter was very interesting, - especially concerning my brother’s connection, - with your work. - They rather disapproved of me, in earlier years, - and I presume, they even do so now. In many ways. It amuses me somewhat, - for, they are rather one-sided in their criticism. By nature, - my sister-in-law [255] and I, are so extremely different, - and she could not see any of my good points, - and saw my weak points exaggerated. What is weak and strong, - at any rate?! Merely - that she had not realized, that a quiet individual can be just as strong an individual than a more active one. - Tho’ I admit that I lack expression but many circumstances have brought many hindrances. I have always been very fond of my brother, - but can see plainly, that he is made - to be a husband and father - not a brother - tho’ I believe he appreciates my character more now - than when he was first married. I have always found my interests - outside the family. One numerologist told me that I was in too much of a hurry, - to come back to earth! Maybe so. -

I believe - that the general Reading of the Character and Spiritual qualities is best. And as the hour, on Friday from 11.00-12.00 E. S. T. - will be fine. - I will be in my room. - No… - and it will be, - from 12 - 1 o’clock, - here, - just before lunch. - I have a treatment until 11 A.M. S. T. - and it will give me time, - to quietly get ready for lunch - and write some letters perhaps. The Battle Creek Sanitarium is on the north western side of the town, located high on a little hill or knob. - My room overlooks the tree-tops, toward the western sun. Quite an expanse - of green, as there is a pretty part of the residential section

• of Battle Creek - on this side of town. The trolley car passes this side of the building but quite a ways from the old building. My room is not a very nice one, - as we all must save this year but I have my bed right close to the window and get as much air as possible especially with the transom open. My writing table is next to the bed and I often turn it toward the window to write.
