GC: You will have before you the body and the enquiring mind of [1742], present in this room. You will give a mental and spiritual reading for this body, with advice and counsel for the development of both of these. You will answer the questions she will ask.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [1742], present in this room.
-
In analyzing the mental abilities of the body with reference to improvement for same, little may be added to that already cognizant in the mental manner for the body. While there might be suggestions as to the attunement for the mental body, as WE would find, these lines may best give just that ideal: “Lord, God of hosts, be with me yet, lest I forget. Lord, known of old, keep me bold in defense of that I know.” In this manner may the body-mind be more conscious of the divine influences as manifest with the spirit of man.
-
As to INDIVIDUAL spirituality in the body-consciousness, this is alive, this is awakened by that as has BEEN manifest IN the body-consciousness, in the abilities to so raise that consciousness as to, through the emanations of the mental body - not physical body - MENTAL BODY, raise vibrations in the mental bodies of others. Hence let that keep the mental body in that accord as will keep self conscious of the spirit of continuity, the spirit of creative energy, MANIFEST through thine own activity, thine own spirit; for the “spirit beareth witness” with the spirit of the Creator. Hence keep in accord, that there may BE the greater love manifest, shown, day by day; not in long-faced nor sombre manner; rather in the JOY of living, for he that LENDETH to the Lord should be the HAPPIEST of individuals, and the PERSONALITY of such an one reflects Him, rather than personality of an individual. So, in the mental body, keep that thou hast gained; for in the application of that THOU KNOWEST is the body made aware and alive TO that ABILITY, that NEED, that UNDERSTANDING, that necessitates the activities of the physical life day by day; for it IS line upon line, little by little, here a kind word, there a kind act, that endears self to HIS service, by that as is GIVEN thine hands to do day by day. Know ever the spirit is willing, the flesh is weak. Keep, in thine meditations, that of the CHRIST consciousness being magnified IN thee day by day. So WILL this cast out fear, that becomes a stumbling block at times to thine OWN endeavors; for we - humanlike - so EASILY forget the promise, that “If ye abide in me, I will ABIDE in thee,” and “What ye ask in MY name, BELIEVING, ye shall have. The way ye know, for as I go to the father and abide in Him and ye in me, so IS the father MAGNIFIED in the earth THROUGH THAT promise as is kept by thee IN me day by day.” Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Should my mental capacities be guided by my spiritual self? (A) As has been just indicated, these should be builded EVER by the spiritual self; for as the mental body IS aware of the spiritual aptitudes, or the spiritual movements, so does the promise BECOME manifest, that “I go to the father, and if I go I will SEND my spirit and he will abide with thee ALWAYS, even unto the end of the earth.” So, as the spirit moves thee, so let thy yeas and thy nays be governed by that, and as the activities must be manifest in the material world, so do they FIND EXPRESSIONS THROUGH the material mind, but is the motivative forces OF that mind of the SPIRIT. The SPIRIT IS Truth!
-
(Q) Should I improve my physical self before seeking a firmer mental hold on myself? (A) In seeking to gain a firmer mental HOLD upon self, or seeking to know SELF and self’s relationship to the creative forces, will AID in BRINGING ABOUT a more perfect coordination in the physical being. Let’s for the moment, then, visualize that of the spirit of life as it manifests itself through a material body (That’s for this body we are speaking of!): Each atom or corpuscle OF the body is an whole universe within itself, with ALL the attendant elements or sources OF life about same. So is the taking thought in self alone, as was given, “not able to add one mite or cubit,” yet is that thought guided by that which is the motivative forces of life IN GOD, and “all power given in Him,” then in keeping that consciousness in the abilities of the Son to bring into being all of life that is; hence we may see how those in a material plane may so raise that consciousness to coordinate same with life in its various forms in the earth, as to MAGNIFY Him the more. Hence the necessities oft that there be ADDED in the vibrations OF the body - MATERIAL body - those of the vibrations of things material, that there be altered, or a coordinating OF the vibrations for a more PERFECT understanding in a physical, or imaginative, or mental body. The SPIRIT IS willing, the flesh IS often weak; yet through understanding of HIS laws, that they all emanate from one source, and what is oft the BEST for coordinating of ONE is NOT ALWAYS best for another; yet TRUTH IS TRUTH in Life’s activities! So, as the body would know self, and awaken more and more the spiritual aspects OF the body IN operation THROUGH the physical forces OF the body, this would make more and more alive the vibrations of the physical body. Not in strain, to be sure; forget not, that He oft went aside from His labors - to pray!
-
(Q) Is my indecision of mind due to the qualities of Libra, or due also to a negative condition? (A) This, to the body, has almost answered itself already! for, as has been indicated, with the atomic forces as are active in every cell, or atom, or corpuscle, of the body, there is both the positive and the negative forces as apparent. Through the activities that one has acted in the material plane, through the entrance or sojourn in same, there have been inclinations created; as do environments or habits create inclinations in a physical body. So, as the body studies those inclinations as must arise from the activities of the sojourns in the earth’s plane, as related to the present EXPERIENCE in the earth plane, these can be determined; but, as has been given oft, no force, no power in the earth, exceeds the WILL Force of God’s highest creation - man! for man alone of all creation DEFIES God! In those inclinations, then, let this become APPARENT in self: that with the better UNDERSTANDING of self, these will ENABLE the body-consciousness, the mental-BEING of the body, to MAKE self’s will one with His Will, rather than gratifying any desire that has or does warp the mental-being or soul-consciousness in ANY manner. Hence that as was given, that “Ye have chosen Wisdom - I will give to thee UNDERSTANDING also.” Let THIS imply to thine OWN activities. Do not excuse self. Meet EVERY demand in Him, and He is able to not only aid but save, in the manner as will enable Him to magnify the Father in thee!
-
(Q) Is my desire for mental independence correct, or somewhat self-centered? (A) As long as the dependence is in Him and not self, correct! When it becomes that “I KNOW,” irrespective, then it becomes self-centered; for, as was given, “Lord, God of hosts, be with us yet, LEST I forget that ALL FORCE AND power IN earth OR heaven COMES FROM THEE! and in EACH BODY or mind I contact IS one expressing their concept of THEIR God!” Let the ANSWER, then, of mental expedience, mental abilities, be in HIM; and he that is wise IN HIM is wise indeed! He that is wise in self has ALREADY builded a barrier!
-
(Q) Does my soul desire the impossible, or is it right for me to want only harmony and peace? (A) The whole of God’s creation seeks harmony and peace!
So, the desire of the soul for harmony and peace is born of Him that gave, “My peace I give unto thee;” not as the WORLD gives peace, but as the SPIRIT that makes alive that which gives the knowledge of HIS peace - that peace that passeth all understanding!
- We are through.

R1. 12/1/31 Letter from GD to Miss [1742], The Hotel Powhatan, Washington, D.C.: “We were indeed glad to have your greetings from Washington, and to know that you had a fairly pleasant trip - at least.
“I’m sure you will find many things of interest in the Capitol City. Have you heard Fritz Kreissler yet? However, I am sure you will not find any place - or any people - more appreciative of yourself than we were here; though I’m sure you find it is exasperating at times to be constantly giving out and not be able to be situated so as to get more in, from the lectures, music, art, and companionship at times. We are in hopes, however, that you feel your little visit at Va. Beach was not amiss, and that it was at least worth while - and has a place in the scheme of things.
“We trust you will let us hear from you from time to time. Know that we will always feel quite close to you, and will be anxious to hear from you as to how things go with you.
“I trust that Mr. [378] and Mrs. [255] also had a pleasant trip and went on their way rejoicing.
“Appreciating your kindly thought, with all good wishes and love from everyone here…
“P.S. Thanks so much for your card to Mildred and me. We think it sweet of you to write us.
“I am enclosing our last study group rdg., which was gotten Sunday afternoon. We are now ready to start on the next lesson, ‘How to Know Self’.”
R2. 12/7/31 Letter from [1742] to EC: “Of course Washington is very interesting, so that I do not even mind the cold, and walked for at least three miles today, but if I had had enough to keep me mentally occupied down in Va., I should have been quite happy, as it has it’s great charms. You see, I expected to find open lectures, and a Healing Class, and also, things of interest at the University. But, of course, one really needs, to live in a city, to have all these things near at hand. I dislike late hours, and trips out of town at night. When I was in Switzerland, at a Swiss Pension, I went to the University, for eight hours during the week. It was most delightful. But naturally, I could walk in many directions, too, as Zurich, is a large town. No doubt, I need the mental stimulus of a city, as I am, more or less, a negative, introspective nature, and need a counterbalance. A country-place is wonderful, if you can keep a chauffeur and cars, and can have your own house and home. To tell you the truth, I am so used to big cities, and big houses that I felt, like a Newfoundland dog would feel, in a little fox terrier’s dog-house! You see, I just feel out of place in a tiny house! But that certainly does not mean, that I do not admire and appreciate small things, because I know that all the most valuable parcels, are the very smallest, very often. Unless, of course, one thinks of ermine wraps, or sables! But, as I have seemingly inherited, the consciousness of my German ancestors, who placed a greater value on the higher forces of life, I have never desired to indulge in furs, or jewels.
“One of the happiest years of my life, was with my uncle, in Germany, who was a minister. They lived in the country, in a large ‘Pfarrhaus’, so simply they lived, and I took cooking lessons, and piano lessons, and we took walks, in the well laid out woody paths, near the village - Twas just a sweet dream of youth, no doubt - as Shakespeare says, ‘Our lives are such stuff as dreams are made of,’ - something like it at any rate.”
R3. 12/18/31 EC’s letter to Miss [1742] in D.C.: “This will introduce to you our very good friend Mr. [317] who conducts the […] School for Boys. I have been very much interested in Mr. [317]‘s work ever since he opened his school… I understand he has some problems he wishes to discuss with you regarding people he is interested in, who need a little financial assistance in their education. Anything that you might do would be appreciated by me, and I certainly believe his work with the youth of the country is worth while - and I am sure will be of interest to you.
“With kindest personal regards from us all, I am…”
R4. 12/30/31 Letter from EC to Miss [1742]: “I know I should have answered yours of the 7th long ago, but there were some days I was quite indisposed; others that we were quite busy, and consequently it has gone by without having the response it should have had. I’m trusting that you have had a most pleasant Christmas season, that you have been able through your acts of commission to give joy and pleasure to many, as well as receive that reward that comes from the knowledge of a deed well done, and the appreciation of that we are by the reception of many such wishes from our friends or acquaintances and loved ones. I’m sure you must have.
“Yes, I’m sure you find Washington a most interesting and worth while place. It has always impressed me by my few visits there, as being the one place where no matter what was the purpose of an activity of a group, there was no lack of thought, time or money in giving to another the service attempted to be rendered. So often we see many individuals, institutions and groups, hindered by the lack of ability, money, or some phase of the experiences necessary to bring the very best. In Washington, apparently, none of this ever occurs. There is no lack of ability, no lack of opportunity, no lack of money. I can’t imagine anything more enjoyable than being able to take advantage of many of the good things that may be had there in the way of lectures on any subject or nature, national, international, local or sectional, and I’m sure you have enjoyed - and are enjoying - it all. The only thing I have ever seen lacking in Washington is nice weather. The climate is so awfully hot in the warm season, and so awfully cold in the winter - and I saw it in both!
“We had quite a pleasant Christmas Day. The two families got together and tried to, for the moment at least, put out of the way all the worries, troubles, and look to the hopes and aspirations, and exalt in our own consciousness as much as possible the blessings from Him whose birthday we wished and desired to honor.
“We seem to be making some progress with our studies. The lessons seem to grow more and more interesting, and seem to give many in the group visions. Had quite an interesting request a few days ago from a lady in Holland. I received quite a thrill when opening the letter, to find that she had enclosed tien guldens - whatever that is. I certainly hope we will be able to give something that will be helpful, and that whoever interested her in the work here will not be disappointed in our attempt to serve.
“We are hoping that some day you will pay us another visit, even though it’s for only a few days, or a day - but know that we have all come to love you for having known you, for the inspiration that you yourself, your mien, your manner, gives to all - and we are always glad to hear from you…”

R6. 9/23/46 Brother [378]‘s wife, [255]‘s letter: “Son [488] and his wife were here visiting his aunt [1742], when we arrived from Europe, so we saw him too. It was just wonderful, the way Divine Mind solved it all, and so I feel the question of a new home will be solved too.”
