GC: You will have before you the life existence in the earth plane of [1770], born March 21, 1889, in Roxbury, Mass., and the earthly existence of this entity as Gracia Albright in the land of Massachusetts and Connecticut, etc., during the early settlings. You will give a biographical life of the entity in that day and plane of earthly existence - and how - into the earth’s plane, and the entity’s departure, giving the developing or retarding points, and how the mistakes made then can be corrected now. You will then answer the questions she submits, as I ask them, concerning her present life’s work, according to associations and environs merited from relationships in the past, and the best procedure for the highest spiritual development.
-
EC: Yes, we have the records of the entity now known as or called [1770] - as Gracia Albright.
-
In interpreting an early experience, or biographical activity of the entity, - the conditions, the promptings of the activities as to the early settlings, and their attempts to sue their activities as a manifesting of their relationships to Creative Forces, - this information is given with the desire to make the experience, or the knowledge of same, as a helpful, hopeful influence.
-
There we find the entity, Gracia Albright, was in the environ or home life not of what would be termed the real backwoodsmen days, as would be inferred from saying “early” periods, - but rather in the vicinity and environs where there were the NEW applications of old principles among those of the household.
-
Being in a household of five at that period, we find the entity was the third; hence becoming numerologically that which should have been as the greater blessings to the whole of the household.
-
In the early period coming under the influence of those activities where the very abilities of the FAMILY indicated the need of help from the outside - or servants that were of the superstitious nature, as called in the present, - the entity was close to the activities of the unusual nature that were the experience in part of most of the young, especially in that period so close to the race that was a portion of the Atlantean’s reaction, and the peoples who were making for the finding of new undertakings, new understandings.
-
The lack of comprehension on the part of those of the household brought the temptings to use or apply the natural sources of communicative activities to such an extent as to be used as the determining factors in the associations and activities of others throughout the land. And then there came the natural changes as wrought by the change of environ, by the different character of peoples.
-
For, as is understood, those that were of the Roger Williams group and the Puritan group were quite varied in their interpretation of that necessary for the conformance to the laws pertaining to the relationships in which man should act towards that which he set as a classified religion, or the relationships to the Creative Forces or Energies.
-
Being of those temperaments and tenets - from the greater experiences that had been a portion of the entity’s activity under a powerful influence - in the abilities to heal, the abilities to rule, the abilities to use such activities, brought persecutions in some respects. But in that new land, with its freedom, such tenets - as might be said - became the influences that brought about the disturbing or defeating of the purposes of the soul-activity during the greater portion of the experience. For the entity abused the liberty in spiritual and in mental thought as pertaining to the relationships individuals would bear one towards another, as the proof of conditions as were to be the manifestations of the relationships of spiritual forces to the physical activities of groups.
-
However, the entity grew in the abilities for all the relationships to make for the widening of the circle of friends, the widening of the abilities in the use of the natural sources for the impending, as well as dependent influences; thus bringing greater opportunities for the application in abuse of those very principles as indicated that became active for self and selfish natures, - indulgences of the natures that made for the prompting being the satisfying of material desires rather than the spiritual and higher mental forces of the entity during that sojourn.
-
The abilities were such, as we have indicated, that in the present - as indicated - there should be the application of self FROM the corrective forces, - in bringing about greater DEPENDENCE upon the true spiritual nature of conditions as may relate to all activities and associations through the present sojourn, in meeting individuals to whom its activities brought in that experience the expression rather of self or selfish natures.
-
THOSE, then, are the lessons the entity is to apply in the present, - that the freedom which is found in the realization of the at-onement with Creative Forces is never to be turned into those channels in which there becomes the gratifying of material emotions in any form or manner alone.
-
Not that there is to be no recognition of such, but the evaluation of these, or the laudation of those activities in which self or self- indulgence of any nature may be overcome, is to be the principal or main activity, - whether as to learning, as to lore, as to healing, as to beauty of any nature or character, these are to be accredited to their source, - and that self and self’s activities are rather the channel through which such manifestation may come, and not the source of such actions or even such manifestations.
-
For it is much like the principles that have been indicated in Him, - that it is in Him ye live and move and have thy being, and not of self. For as He gave, “Of myself I can do nothing.” This does not imply that the abilities to accept or reject the sources of knowledge and power are to be belittled or not used, in any phase of experience of the sojourn through the material plane.
-
But the promptings of the entity became rather the sources, and the channels through which the awareness of the retardments came.
-
In the application in the present, then, - it has just been indicated as to the manner, the means, the way in which these abilities are to be used, and the retardments met - as there are the relationships with others in the varied activities of the experience.
-
The entity changed oft in its activity of sojourn, owing to the material benefits - as would be called from the material standpoint, as well as from the activities of the household of the entity. Yet the entity grew to be one in power, one in authority, THROUGH the very channels that it used.
-
That those things were seen that brought disturbing conditions in the lives of many, because of their holding to the affluence of things prompted by that impelling force of the entity’s own personality during the experience, brought not even a fear, - save that self would be lessened in its ability to control or direct others.
-
Yet because of the very tenets taught, the very lessons learned in the experience before, it became rather as He hath said, - there was not a forgetting, but there was not the reminding - until the blessing had passed.
-
Thus there comes into the present activity of the entity the need to keep its surety in Him who hath given, “I am the way, the truth and the light, - no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” These are not idle nor boastful words of a mere individual, but of an individuality - having realized His station and position - declaring that which is the phase of experience that must come to each and every soul, - that the fear of the Lord is fulfilled within the self. Not fear that makes one afraid in the sense of personal self, but the fear to do, to be, that as would bring any disturbing force in the experience of self or of anyone about same.
-
Through that experience or sojourn the entity lived in the environs of those lands as indicated, not faring forth into the western portions to a great extent, but becoming more and more acquainted or affiliated with the new thought of the period, or of those who were becoming more and more newcomers in that land; and lived to an age or determining period of sixty odd years.
-
Thus we have the activities of this entity in that experience and sojourn.
-
Ready for the questions on same.
-
(Q) What was the relationship in past incarnations with my late husband of the present life, […]? (A) In those experiences of that particular sojourn as just indicated, we find the entity had the associations that were never consummated between the two; for they were as lovers in the material sense.
Thus there existed throughout the experience of the entity’s sojourn with the companion in the present, always that of expectancy.
Also we find that in the Palestine land there was a friendship that was only consummated IN the associations of companionship.
Through the Egyptian and Atlantean sojourn, we find that the relationships were then PARTIALLY - not entirely - as brother and sister.
- (Q) Can I assist mankind through communications with him, progressing in clairvoyant powers? If so, what would be the procedure? (A) There may be assistance or assurance to self, and an aid to the companion by such.
As to using such AS an aid to others, it would be a retarding to the companion.
- (Q) What karmic debt did I pay, or what was the reason for my emotional suffering of the last few years? (A) Just that experience as indicated, or a part of same, - and the emotions that arose, in that ye misdirected. Not as that of pure desire to disturb, but to show self’s power.
Hence, as the emotional experience has been, - more oft than otherwise ye were in the power of the emotions of others!
- (Q) Would it be best for me to travel to the West Coast this fall, or remain in New York City? (A) As we find there may be a great awakening by the traveling to the West Coast, but DO NOT arrange or so entangle self as to REMAIN there.
For remember, as has been indicated by that just given, there was NOT the journeying to the west in the experience before, but rather the aiding or attempting to use or to meet the new or incoming associations during the experience.
Gain strength through such a visit, but let it be visit rather than contemplated residence.
-
(Q) Do I owe a debt of any kind to […] [my former accompanist]. If so, how can I repay it? (A) Only in those manners that need to be measured to many, in meeting that which has been the experience through that association. Not a special karmic debt to the individual, see? but as an expressed one that needs to be measured to many.
-
(Q) Should I spend the summer at the Noyes School of Rhythm at Cobalt, Conn.? Would it enable me to render a service to others? or should I visit other friends who say they need me? (A) As we find, the more UNSELFISH way would be in this school, yet SUPPLYING to self an ability of an outlet that will later become - through the associations in other fields - of greater service.
Hence as we find, it will be well. Beware of only one association that may be made there, - a connection from Vermont. This does not mean to withdraw the skirts, or to draw the skirts about self as one that would be contaminated by that unusual environ or activity, but rather use same as a warning regarding that individual and leave the results to Him who IS the Giver of all good and perfect gifts.
Know, as in thy application of self in the present, the more oft is there greater joy and help brought by sowing the seeds of truth, - patience, longsuffering, gentleness, kindness, brotherly love; and then not becoming overanxious as to the results such would bring, - knowing He alone may quicken such seed to bring forth the fruits thereof.
- (Q) What is my seal? (A) That which has been a part, or sought to be a part of, that to represent the order and brotherhood of man; three links that would be joined, upward and downward, - the three links set in such a manner, both up and across, as to form a cross. About same would be a wreath entwined with berries, thorns and white blossoms; not as a ribbon, but as a wreath [See 1770-3, Par. R1].
This would request not only that which is and has been the experience, but the strength in same to form the greater environs for greater service.
- (Q) What relationship was [1921] to me in past incarnations? (A) Very closely associated, - or what ye would term in the present as a sister-in-law in one; close in another as a friend; and in another as one rather pitted as it were against the other for favors of individuals.
Let the seal as indicated be as an emblem, - not in the form of something to be worn, but something to be studied each morning or evening when ye would analyze thyself and the motives of others.
Then, as something of drawn work, or as a painting of sufficient size to indicate the union of the links as the three phases of man’s experience, as crossed with the three phases of the relationships in the spiritual realm, as crowned by that which represents the purity as well as the blood and the fruit thereof.
- We are through for the present.

R2. 7/6/39 Mrs. [1770]‘S ltr. to EC:
My dear Mr. Cayce:-
Greetings to you and your household, from behind the tent
- named “Hades” [at Noyes School of Rhythm] where yours truly is sitting at the moment. Would that I might share with you all this beautiful Connecticut hillside - tall stately cedars - fine old elms & gnarled apple trees - and birds of every description signing praises - from early dawn
- until the sunset hour.
Am sending a Camp folder to your Gertrude - and that may give you an idea - of where I shall spend July and August. I’ve been asked to assume the duties of “hostess” to all newcomers and also act as chauffeur - where it is necessary to don our city clothes - and do errands in Middletown - which is seven miles away.
There is a breathless brooding silence over our hillside at times - and here we forget out worldly cares and tread softly with the Gods.
Mrs. [1921] and I enjoyed being with you - and the meetings were most interesting and inspiring.
Here on this hillside I read & re-read the “Group Study” Lessons - and each morning & afternoon - at 11:30 A.M. (our time) and 4:30 P.M. I send out prayers for your continued health & strength and the continuance of your God-given powers.
Wish it were possible for me to take over my second reading [1770-2] with you - but presume it is best for the truths & lessons therein - to unfold - as I study & meditate upon the advise & wisdom given.
[1771] is happy at […] - painting & studying. Am enclosing a check for $10.00 (ten dollars) - which covers her second physical reading - or check reading - as you call it.
I’m sure of one thing - that, had I not followed the advise given me in my physical reading [1770-1] - I would be unable to attend camp this summer. The attacks of fatigue have ravished - and I fell better physically - mentally & emotionally - since having both the Life & Physical Readings.
I often wonder why I was fortunate enough to hear of Edgar Cayce - and I am deeply thankful.
Love and greetings to you all - it was wonderful being in your midst.
Affectionately, [1770]
R3. 7/10/38 EC’s ltr. to Mrs. [1770]:
My dear Mrs - [1770] - and for once want to just say, […] [first name],
Thank you for yours of the 6th - also the enclosure. Am glad to know [1771] is having such a lovely time. Judged from her last letter there was something very interesting all about her glad and happy for her.
You certainly make the camp sound interesting - you should write the folders for that camp. Just love scenes as you depict them - can in my imagination just see them - as well as hear the birds sing - Just love that! Like to try and tell each song, and name the bird that is singing his lay, know most of them in my own country side, and they are of a great interest to me in each new vicinity - just love them. Is interesting to me to note the ones that are familiar in all parts of the country and those peculiar to each vicinity; for instance - we never hear the Blue-Jay here nor the redhead peckerwood yet they are very familiar in almost every part of the country. But you will be thinking - I am off/on - what ever they call bird lore.
But I like what little have seen of Conn. Be glad to see the camp folder, sure sounds interesting - the way you tell it.
Am sure there will be none that can fill the place better as hostess than your self - wouldn’t mind coming on a visit myself - were you to have me in charge.
It was lovely to have you here for our meetings. Do hope you found it worth your time and trouble - for it was a real treat to have you here. Mrs. [1921] seemed just a bit, shall I say disturbed. Possibly it was me - but felt she was not altogether easy for some cause.
Now I know what makes me feel stronger each time attempt to give a reading. THANK you is saying so little of how I really appreciate your help - and can tell you why you were brought to the work. I just needed you so - that is why - and I give thanks to HIM for the wonderful help you have given in so many ways.
Oh, maybe next time am in N.Y. will have the opportunity to talk over some of the readings. Am sure you will have them all set in their order before then tho - but there will be possibly some phase of the experience we can discuss with help to one another.
It is real food such as He spoke of, to have you say the information has been of real help and worth to you - not that I doubt. No, no! But realize that I am such a poor channel - and wish to do so much, and it is by the help and prayer of those like your self that I am able to carry on. Even as it was with HIM - and don’t mean to compare myself with HIM at all. But He is the way. And when one realizes, they gather strength even as HE. Well they know they are not far wrong at least. And do dislike self sufficiency
- for LIFE is a Unit and each soul is as a corpuscle in the heart of GOD. Like to think of it like that - and know we are necessary to each other - and to HIM.
Thank you again and again. All send love and regards. Let us hear oft as you find the time - it is a help
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
R4. 8/12/39 Mrs. [1770]‘s ltr. to EC:
Cobalt, Conn.
My dear Mr. Cayce:-
Again peace and quiet reigns on our Mt. Olympus - for this is our “rest hour period”-
I seldom sleep - for I love the hushed stillness - and my senses seem more alive to the beauty and loveliness of the soft fleeting clouds & the sunlight shadows on the old grape vine - which clings so restfully on the quiet grey stone wall. The wind is gently - very gently swaying the leaves
- & not even a bird note is heard. They too are resting - or perhaps if I walked quietly to our showers - I might see them
- taking THEIR showers.
Out of doors - down the hill a bit in a secluded spot - are our out of door showers. It’s wonderful to feel the spray - as you stand on a rock, pull a chain - & the water descends -
The sunlight catching the spray makes you feel - as tho you were surrounded by - or actually in a rainbow. Here the birdies love to bathe also - for the water is usually dripping from faucet or showers - & how they love it.
The Queen Anne’s lace is every where - along all our various paths in near by fields, and even at our tent door. They lift their stately white heads and nod to us whenever we pass them by.
Do you have the Queen Anne’s lace flower in Virginia? Along the path to the lake - we pass over a little brook - along its edge is a brilliant red cardinal flower - lovely to behold - every day - I step there in the deep woods and warble a song or two - all by myself - surrounded only by the tall ash trees, the murmuring brook & the flowers. My environment spirit reveals in it. Just disturbed a daddy long legs - he was trying to drink some of my ink.
Did you by any change see the display of Northern lights - last night.
We slept out of doors - for the night was brilliant with stars - suddenly great streamers of light flooded the northern horizon - undulating & fluctuating - with great fleetness of movement to the zenith - then scurrying back again. For hours we watched it - until 3 A.M. to be exact. I hardly dared to close even one eye - for fear of missing some of its beauties. We saw many shooting stars - wee ones & larger ones - the latter, trailing beautiful tails behind them.
It’s really a great privilege to be here at camp, where one is conscious of, and one with Nature.
I love to share my beautiful Conn. with you - there are so many age-old trees - ridges - rivers & open meadows.
On Thursday last, we left Camp - on a Gypsy hike - even Amalthea, our Camp goat - went on the open road with us. We camped at a wonderful spot - about two miles from Camp - between a wooded ridge & a babbling brook - full of rocks, stones & pools. Here we splashed & played - as tho we were mermaids - I found a delightful pool, in which a tiny water fall fell. I leaned against the little fall, & enjoyed the flowing of its sparkling waters - over my back & shoulders
- singing - “Die Lorelie” - [the Rhine maiden’s songs] all the while. Come and visit us in spirit some time - while we are having our rhythm classes. It’s a glorious experience - & I’m enjoying to the full - moving to the music of Beethoven’s symphonies & sonatas - Brahms - Schubert - Fritz & others.
In this world of ours, all is beauty and rhythm - only when I receive letters from the outside world - am I drawn back to unrest & inharmony.
Poor Mrs. [1921] - she writes that she feels that her Reading is in complete error, for Mr. [1821]‘s attitude towards her is one of absolute ingratitude, unappreciation - & as far as she can see - he has very little remorse for his treatment of her.
She writes (quote) “There is no longer any basis for even friendship - and my Reading urges me to continue friendship, and adds that the CLOSER the association, the better for both of us.” Poor dear, she is suffering, and will continue to do so until she can rise above her personal feelings. I wrote her, “You feel NOW that your Reading is in error because [1821] does not conform to YOUR point of view. Haven’t you overlooked a very important sentence in your Reading - upon which a great deal hinges? Something about ‘the greater determining factors in the mind & activities of [1821]?’”
We humans - only see what we want to see - & invariably we blame some one else for our sorrows & heart aches. I want to help her if I can - but I realize also - that she must try to help herself - & that can never come while she holds such feelings of bitterness & retaliation. I somehow feel that sooner or later understanding & enlightenment will bring her peace of mind & of spirit.
You probably wonder why you haven’t heard from [1999] - a young lady, who thought she would like a Life Reading.
She came to me & kept saying over & over again, “Can he really read for you - when you’re so far away? I wish I could go to V.B. - I’d feel better about it.” In spite of my telling her - that “there is not space or time in the psychic realm -,” she was still the doubting Thomas - & I suddenly told her - that if she felt that way - I would advise against her having a Reading. She mentioned hating to spend $20.00 & then not receiving a satisfactory Reading & intuitively I felt - she would stand in her own light. Sometime later, perhaps, she may feel differently - and I advised waiting until she has more faith.
Saw [1771] on Aug 1st. She got immediate relief from the new inhalant - said, “She’s had hardly a sniffle since taking it
- & it’s wonderful!”
She looks radiantly happy - and at the moment is with her Mother. Believe it would be wise to have another “Life Reading,” for her, to advise & guide her upon the next step for her. But we will write about that a little later.
At present I would like a Physical Check Reading. I’ve used up all my Cod Iron [Codiron] Pills - and believe I’d better check up on my physical condition. I’ll write my questions on another sheet & Miss Davis can put them into DIRECT QUESTIONS - if she will.
Did you hear of Nancy Fullwood’s passing? She passed “thru the other door” on August 8th. She was a dear soul & I know her spirit is lifted high - as she lifted so many souls
- who contacted her - upon their journey on this plane of existence. Her book - “The Tower of Light,” has been an inspiration to me - for many years. Have you a copy of it? Young Mr. [1905] passed away on July 19th - as your Reading stated, “This young man NEED not die” but unbelief & bigotry stood in the way of his return to health & strength.”
His mother’s brother is a physician - & he could not understand the Reading & influenced the boys parents.
Who knows - perhaps thru their grief & suffering - BELIEF may come to them.
Are you thinking of spending a few days in N.Y. City. Be sure & let me know - if you are.
I’m wondering if young […] from …, Va. called upon you. He is a friend of [1771]‘s & met you in N.Y. - he was visiting at Virginia Beach & hoped to call upon you.
When your Gertrude sees the length of this letter - she’ll begin to wonder - but I only wanted to share with you all - my happy surroundings.
Greetings & love. Sincerely. [1770]
Say Hello to Hugh Lynn - for me.
R5. 8/16/38 EC’s ltr. to Mrs. [1770]:
Dear Mrs [1770]
Just came back from a week’s stay in Thousand Islands and find yours of the 12th, thank you. Gosh, but had such an experience with you while was at the Isles. Have wondered didn’t I really visit you at your camp? Then with your letter, am most convinced that did, especially, when I see the evening of the experience was the same as when you wrote. Have you ever been to Thousand Isles? I had never before. Of course, one’s impression of such a place at first, is so curious to me. It appeared to be as if it was a place I had dreamed about or read in some lovely story. Had glimpsed but never actually seen and was always wondering if wouldn’t open my eyes and find it all changed - a real place of romance, where one might dream and dream of every thing lovely and beautiful (yes - and the fishing good). A place one would at once begin to wonder over their list of friends and wish they had them there with them. The water is lovely. The islands - just dreams - dreams of paradise just enough of the raw to make the beauty of the rest stand out. Really felt drawn close to God, and of all the people I knew - wished you were there and could I have asked you one question then knew would know whether you would like it or not.
But will have to tell you all about the dream some time - but was convinced after the dream. Ye, by all means - it should have been you that should be there all the time.
Your description of your retreat is wonderful. Lovely wish might have more of such descriptions for they make one really appreciate nature - that beautiful proof of God’s love to the children of men. When one sees and feels the closeness in still of the noon day - the song of the bird - the ripple of the water - the splash of the fish in the brook or river
- the cry of the heron - the wave of the flower as it wafts its incense on the air; then one really lives. Thank you for every word of it.
Yes, we have Queen Ann’s lace - and saw great fields of it on the trip as well [as] driving up. Went through many historic places where men spent their heart’s blood for a cause that too seemed to make the beauty of nature so much nearer. Spent a night on the battle field of Gettysburg to just get the feel of such. No, it was not so good, too much struggle even yet remains.
Had the experience of hearing some one [Mrs. [1602]] play inspirationally while away. They [she] didn’t even know what they were [she was] playing. It was lovely. Of course, don’t know the music by the masters style, but know when it appeals to my own sense of praise and glory to God.
Am sorry about Mrs. [1921]. Do hope she will find herself, for it is a fearful thing to be so disturbed as she must be.
This business of becoming possessive in our minds, does bring torment when we wish to change people’s lives, or are troubled by their way of thinking.
You are quite right in not persisting that one have a reading who doesn’t see just how it could be done, but hope yet we may be of a service since you have an interest in her.
Am happy indeed that [1771] is feeling so well. She wrote me of how excellent the inhalant had worked. Am happy for her, and hope she just gets a lot of good work done. Am sure she will enjoy a stay with her Mother.
Am making the time of the check physical for the afternoon of the 23rd 3.30 to 4.30 E.S.T. Guess you are day-light time, so remember and give us the address you will be for the hour. Miss Gladys said she had your questions. Hope that time and hour suits you.
No, hadn’t heard of Nancy’s [Nancy Fullwood] passing. What a lovely soul and know she has brought peace to the heart of many and that she rests in Peace. Just now, am mighty sorry to hear of her passing - but am afraid it is selfish. For had hoped to see and talk with her again when in N.Y.
Do you know if her body was sent back to Ala. or was she buried in N.Y.?
Had heard of Mr. [1905] as the young lady [1849] introduced you to here who also phoned me about him is here visiting her sister [1857].
No, haven’t a copy of the “Tower of Light” - will try and secure one.
Just hope some help, some light will come to the family of Mr. [1905] - for such grief with out belief in the power of the resurrection must be hard indeed. If Mr. […] came in or called, it was while I was away. Yes, Miss Gladys said some one did call - she thinks it was he.
Gertrude went to Ky. while I was away. Hasn’t come back as yet. Understand she has been quite ill. Expect her home tomorrow, but am sure she would enjoy reading your beautiful letter.
Hope you find time to write again real soon. Feel somewhat rested and am in hopes may be of a greater service to all.
With love and good wishes
always [signed] Edgar Cayce
