This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 29th day of December, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [1771], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Born December 1, 1917, in Brockton, Mass. Time of Reading … Ave., 3:45 to 4:30 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. Long Island, N.Y.

1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions that are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth’s plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions as she submits, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the entity and the records here, as are upon the skein of time and space.

3. In giving an interpretation of the records, many things of an unusual nature might be deduced from the records as we have them here. These, however, are chosen with the desire that the experience be a helpful one in making the application of the abilities within the present sojourn; meeting those things which have been called karmic, yet remembering that under the law of grace this may not be other than an urge, and that making the will of self one with the Way may prevent, may overcome, may take the choice that makes for life, love, joy, happiness, - rather than the law that makes, causes the meeting of everything the hard way.

4. For the self is constantly meeting self. And as ye may learn to stand aside and watch self pass, there may come more and more the knowledge and the comprehension that it is earnest, it is real; and that the real is rather the unseen than that which is so material as to cause disappointments, fears, and those things that make the mind of man afraid.

5. In the astrological aspects we find those things which arise from beauty and harmony, and thus in Jupiter with Venus we find the artistic temperament. And yet one that does not like correction, or who feels innately resentments when corrections of any character are made; dislikes to give advice as much as it dislikes to be advised; though reasoning with one is not advice, to the entity, which is indeed a helpful force in the experience.

6. Hence the desire, the innate influence to be free in every form or manner, yet loving to be loved. Hence the marital relationships should be early in the experience in this sojourn. One of the few who may have a career as well as a home.

7. This is indicated not only from the astrological but the material sojourns, as will be indicated from the experiences of the entity in the earth.

8. In Neptune, again we find the artistic temperament; those things that go as scrolls, or that would tend to be for friezes or the nature of same, should be a portion of the experience in the application.

9. And any of those influences where water or decorations for things that float on water, or those things across bodies of water, associations with individuals who have to do with things pertaining to water, will all be a part of and a helpful force in the experience of the entity; if there is EVER kept the use of constructive forces in having an ideal that IS grounded in spiritual import.

10. Just as the entity unconsciously places a great store in those things of a psychic or occult nature, without asking proofs of material nature, - these are well, for - if the spiritual import is always kept - they tend to make for the beauty even in those things where dross or disappointment may be experienced by another.

11. Not that the entity becomes then a fatalist, but knowing in Whom you have believed and Who is the AUTHOR of same makes for the assurance of the life, the experience, the opportunity being spent and used in those directions in which there may come a HELPFUL influence into the experiences of others.

12. As the work or labors or service where decorative forces become a part of the experience; those things as would pertain to home, - as of wallpaper, - those things as would pertain to places of entertainment, as in friezes that might be upon decorations, or those upon ships, or those upon things having to do with the sailing over - as of decorations within the airplane or the like. All of these should be a part of the entity’s experience, and the application of its abilities, its application of those things that are as the virtues within the experience of the entity as it has developed through its sojourns within the earth.

13. As to the earthly sojourns, - here we might find much in the experience of the entity as to how, why the choice of the entity’s entering was under the environs, in those activities in which its entrance came in this experience. And the understanding of same might bring a better concept of how the whole experience is one, and that LIFE AND consciousness is a continuous stream, - and not that of stop and go.

14. For there may be circles at times, but NO standing still for the development of a soul. For it is in movement, in change, that we find awarenesses have and do come, and ever will be. For it is the divine law.

15. These all become then a part of the entity.

16. As to the appearances or sojourns in the earth, we find there are several which bear upon the present experience:

17. Before this we find the entity was in the land of the present nativity, during those periods of the early settlings, the early developments of the land.

18. And in and about the nativity of the entity in the present we find, as one Lorraine Hammner, the entity was active in making for gains and developments through the experience, - even under the unconventional manners of activity, as they may have been to some under those early environs.

19. For there were the abilities, under the environs, to make for conveniences for others in weaving, in the making of brocades in the weaving, - in making those designs that became a part of the activities of peoples through those experiences, and the shaping of things which later became - as in the environ of the entity’s present nativity - the special use in that land; forming what may be said to be the SPIRIT of the city of birth - shoes!

20. In the experience the entity gained; for there were those helpful forces with EVER the cheery smile, even under difficulties. And though there were the unions only late in the life in the experience of its own home, the many enjoyed the beauties of advice, the beauties of precepts of the entity as respecting development of the young.

21. Hence we will find in the present experience that children in certain ages and certain developments are of special interest to the entity. Yet everything, whether leaf, bower, mountain or what not, that has a design is of special interest to the entity. And if there is the adhering to NATURE’S application in design in the decorative forces, we may bring greater expression of that which is innately felt in the INDIVIDUALITY of the entity in the present.

22. Before that we find the entity was in the Roman land, during those periods when there were the early activities from those individuals and groups who came under the influence of the peoples from the Promised Land, - or those periods following the life of the Master in the Palestine and Judean and Galilean land.

23. There we find the entity was among those peoples who were in authority, yet not in the positions of royalty, - rather in those positions where there was the directing of many of the activities of groups of peoples.

24. The entity was not a weakling, yet never one that was required to apply self in manual activity. The interests of the entity then were more in the beauty of the outdoors; the games and the sports of the period were a part of the entity’s experience and development. As these were turned more and more into ways and means and manners of giving of expressions of those in authority for punishments, more and more the ENTITY attempted - through those associations and activities - to turn such directions into a development of body, a development of the abilities of individuals in given activities.

25. These made for development through the experiences of the entity, and when through those activities there were many who were made to know not home nor the fireside, nor their own parentage nor their father or mother, we find the entity’s interest IN same made for activities to such an extent that there were the preparations to bring about homes for such.

26. Again we find the expressions in the experiences of the entity in the present; the desire for home, the desires innately for that loving influence that makes for that which has been very well and truly said, “Blood is thicker than water.”

27. The applications of these may be used in a developing manner, may be used in a material manner. KNOW the ideal in these directions also; and as ye do it to the least, so ye do it to thy Maker.

28. The name then was Delnamun; and in the experience the entity gained throughout.

29. Before that we find the entity was in the Persian land, during those experiences when there were the activities under the Croesus line; when the “city in the hills and the plains” was having an influence upon the nations and peoples of many lands.

30. The entity was among those of royalty in that experience, enjoying the pleasures, enjoying those activities in which there was the thought principally of the satisfying of material desires, material appetites, and those things that brought the greater ease or comfort.

31. These were a part of the entity’s experience, as the niece to the Queen - as would be called in the present - during that sojourn.

32. The name then was Hedjkei; and the entity lost in the early portion. Yet with those changes wrought by the activities of those from the Grecian land, as well as those from the individuals’ activities in the Persian experience, the entity became filled with the desire to know more of those things which brought such great beauty in the lives of those associated with the activity in the “city in the hills and the plains.”

33. THEN we find those beauties of the activity bringing greater joy, though the material environs were much changed through that portion.

34. The brocades, the weavings, those things which had to do with the mixing of silks and the various threads that were the representation from many lands became a part of the entity’s experience, as it aided individuals and groups in finding their activities under the varied environs as begun through that experience.

35. Through these the entity gained. And in the present we will find the abilities of decorations, of draperies, of dress, of hats and of those things as would deal with prints upon which activities would bring the very nature of dress or drapery, become a part of the entity’s INNATE desire.

36. These may be a part of the experience in the present.

37. Today, as ever, there is set before thee that from which ye must choose. One brings hope, life; the other brings the influence of the LAW that killeth, - but the spirit maketh alive!

38. Before that we find the entity was in the periods when there was the journeying of the peoples known as the Israelites from the Egyptian land.

39. There we find the entity was among those peoples who journeyed forth into the wilderness; coming under the influence of those disturbing forces in the activities through the experience. But with the giving of the law, with the pattern as was set in the mount, and the entity’s aiding in the preparations for those things that were to become the tabernacle, - the skins, the linens, the rings - all of those activities in same - JOY became a part of the experience. And as it is given, these brought to those who labored in such a service that of a peace, a harmony that was not understood by those who labored not.

40. The name then was Shemelack - a man through that experience.

41. Before that we find the entity was in the Egyptian land, during those periods when there was the cleansing of the peoples from the protuberances that were a part of the hindrances in the perfect body as a god, as a concept which had been attained through those early periods.

42. There we find the entity was in the Temple of Sacrifice first, then in the Temple Beautiful; making for the express activity of giving to individuals their place in the services for the greater number of individuals.

43. The name then was Saazlma. In the experience the entity gained throughout those activities. For in the aiding and helping and directing there was brought the fullness of the awareness as to the relationship of self to the Creative Forces.

44. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, then, and that to which it may attain, and how:

45. This is limited only to self. For be persuaded, there is nothing in heaven or hell that may prevent thee from knowing thy relationship to thy Creator BUT thyself.

46. Laying aside then the things that may easily beset, press on to the mark of the higher callings that are set in thy abilities to USE thy activities in ANY of the decorative forces. For the beauty of man’s mind is oft directed by the beauty of his environs.

47. Whether this pertains to the decorating in home, in office, in ship, in plane, or in draperies or garments and the materials from which same may be made, know that these each have their place in thy experience. Do not leave the one without the other. For in thine own development ye will find those periods when they each have their place in thy material, thy mental, thy spiritual progress.

48. Ready for questions.

49. (Q) Would it be better to do free-lance work or to be associated with a concern or group? (A) Be associated with a concern or group, for the next year or two. AFTERWARD we will find those experiences bringing to thee that in which ye may use thy efforts BETTER in thine own free work.

The desire for freedom, the desire for expression MUST find an outlet - but the security of the moment will give thee stableness.

50. (Q) A large or small concern or group? (A) One that has vision, whether large OR small.

51. (Q) Where would be the best to locate? (A) Philadelphia or the environs of same.

52. (Q) Would I make better progress living alone or with someone, or with my aunt [1770]? (A) As ye depend one upon the other, - There is still the desire in self to be alone. Do not leave the aunt, though, yet; for there are the needs for each in thine OWN development.

53. (Q) Would photography be helpful in my design work? (A) A KNOWLEDGE of same, whether it is to be applied in its broadest sense, - yes. If it is in an individual sense, not so much.

54. (Q) Should designs be made for places to be occupied by children chiefly? (A) By MEN AND children! See, there is the appeal for those things that may be as a design that is especially appealing to men, - for they are nearer children than women!

55. (Q) In what suggested field should I start? (A) As has been indicated, - that is, the decorative as friezes or paper or WHATEVER is needed in the way of designs for places of that nature indicated.

56. (Q) Should I go on with further study - if so, where and with whom? (A) As we find, use that thou hast in hand; and as the way OPENS, THEN there may be SPECIAL study for that as presents itself. But begin now. Use the rod in hand.

57. (Q) Should I give up the job I’ve got now? (A) Rather use this as the stepping-stone for a broader association.

58. We are through for the present.

R3. 7/21/51 Report; answer to questionnaire: “Yes, I still have a copy of my Life Reading. I have read it maybe 10-12 times. I’ve read it with Hugh Lynn Cayce, with my aunt [1770], my fiance [4053] [who later became my husband]. I loaned it to above mentioned for reading. I read it just now to answer the questions, otherwise it has been about a year since I’ve read it.

“Personality traits and characteristics were perfectly true; also reference to beauties of home, making beauty for others, not only in physical surroundings but in spirit of the home, etc.

“Before I had the Life Rdg. [1771-2] I was specializing in textile designing in school [EC didn’t know this] - in high school - then went on into graduate school in decorating. I won a decorating school scholarship on the basis of textile designs done in high school. I tried getting into the textile game in N.Y., I consider that unsuccessful financially. The decorating part of the career was successful - if I had continued my career instead of marrying, I would have been a partner in the firm, on the west coast. After marriage my career was resumed on the east coast and proved the statement that ‘the entity could have both a home and a career simultaneously.’ There again I was slated to become supervisor of the department when I quit for pregnancy.

“Regarding water - would be terribly unhappy if I had to live away from the seaboard. I remember how thrilled I was when we got to the coast after a period of living inland. At the time I married my husband was in the shipping business primarily; still handles a lot of shipping. The Life Reading suggested associating with individuals having to do with water.

“‘These each have their place in thy experience’ - I’ve always after the reading had constantly in background the ideal of helping others.

”‘…beauty of man’s mind is often directed by his environment’ as expressed in the reading. Regardless of the financial outlay my clients could make for their decorating, this idea has really been an ideal - to bring beauty and harmony into the surroundings rather than to attain acclaim as a fashionable or high style decorator.

“I do believe in reincarnation of the soul. The reading has certainly strengthened that belief and given me that with which to test and justify the belief.

“My idea or concept of karma is that it is something I, myself, have done or thought or left undone and unthought in a previous incarnation.

“Yes, I have consciously changed my thoughts, actions or reactions toward others as a result of my Life Reading. I probably would have continued the vocation without the reading, but certainly the reading CONFIRMED INNATE FEELINGS. I can’t estimate what the difference would have been if I had not obtained the reading. Certain statements in the reading STRUCK A RESPONSIVE CHORD.

“Yes, I do have a different concept as to the purpose of my life as a result of my Life Reading. At the time the ‘making the will one with the Way’ in the Life Rdg. (plain indication there that I had the choice) had its influence, aligning or paralleling my will with God’s will. I know that has grown, whether due to the reading, study, or growth in church work, I don’t know - probably all mixed up together.

“Yes, periodically or spasmodically I have had a quiet morning time for guidance, more than for self-analysis and introspection. I certainly get the guidance and live a better balanced life as a result of it. There is a very definite difference in the smoothness with which a day goes and I meet what arises, when I have had morning prayer.

“Do I regard my vocation as the dominant force in my life or do I look upon my vocation as an agency through which I can the better fulfil my purpose in this life? As a housewife and a mother - beyond furnishing all the physical needs - I could do all the things physically and still starve the child of all the beauty and spiritual needs. In that sense, I believe that as a housewife and mother I should create a spirit of beauty and harmony in the home and the lives of those in it, which is as a blessing to them and all who enter it.

“How can the A.R.E. best carry on the work of Edgar Cayce and the good for which he stood? I think it’s doing alright. It shows a steady growth, an improvement in publications, quality and organization of the publications. When THE SEARCHLIGHT came out, it tied up loose-ends into one. I think an annual index of subjects covered in the publications would be good for reference. Publish yearly index - where find polio studies, etc., etc.”

R4. 12/19/60 Aunt [1770], in reply to 7/8/60 form [See under 2791-1 Reports] requesting report on [1771]‘s early American incarnation:

“[1771], with 4 children, hasn’t time to do any research, nor has she done any previously, but she does believe (innately feels) that the reading was correct about her incarnation as Lorraine Hammner.”

R5. 1/11/79 Aunt [1770] wrote: “It pleases me very much that [1771] and her husband [4053] are so active now in this area [for A.R.E.]. In addition to two study groups here and book consignees the two of them will be giving the talks for the Team free lecture in Feb.”
