This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 4th day of January, 1939, in accordance with request made by the self - through Mr. [437], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 3:45 to 4:00 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions that may be submitted, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes.
-
Now, as we find, these disturbances here with [1781] arise primarily from a stomach disorder; though the effects of administrations have caused the agitans or the shaking or palsied effect that comes over portions of the body, - being the effects of administrations, rather than other causes that have brought about these conditions.
-
The inability of keeping the coordination through the blood supply, owing to toxic forces as well as the disturbance in the functioning of the system, makes this rather a condition where LITTLE may be applied other than that already being administered - as we find.
-
However, if there were some changes, and more of the hot and cold water therapy administered, with the electrical treatments that merely HEAT the body, as WE find, there might be a great deal more accomplished for this body.
-
But the attitude, the desires or purposes for activity, and the use to which the mental and physical self would be put, would have a great deal to do with HOW the response would be.
-
For unless a life can be lived for a purposefulness of constructiveness within the experience, how has it been said of those who would hinder or cause offence?
-
The administrations then for this body, as we would give them, - keep that which has been done and is being done; unless there is the desire for a more constructive activity within the abilities of the body.
-
Then if that is chosen, and chosen with the desire and purpose and activity in accord, use then the hot and cold therapy; this applied all over the body, with the rubs and the Diathermy that merely heats the whole body; and we will find greater results, and more helpful forces for same.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Any advice regarding diet? (A) This would be best chosen by such an one making administrations of that which is chosen by the body as the manner or means which it will pursue.
-
We are through for the present.

(1/4/39 GD’s notes:
If you choose to follow these suggestions, we would refer you to Dr. Louis H. Backman, 40 West 55th St., N.Y.C., and suggest that you show him the reading.
At your convenience we would appreciate a history of your case to the time of obtaining the reading. This is very valuable for our files, as it is the only way we can make any comparison that would be worthwhile for research purposes with our records.)
Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 1/7/39 Mr. [437]‘s letter to EC:
“This will acknowledge receipt of the [1781] reading. “I am sorry to say that this reading does not seem to fit the situation at all.
“For example, the second paragraph [page one, paragraph two?] makes reference to treatment that is already being administered. In this particular instance there is no treatment. The same is true of the paragraph that I have marked. [page one, paragraph three?]
“[1781] is evidently in very good shape and the only thing that bothers him is a skin trouble that affects his hands causing them to scale and become red at all times.
“I believe that another reading should be given and I will have [1781] prepare a set of questions and forward them to you.
“I understand that he has sent you an application [GD’s note: Membership application was received from Mr. [1781], dated 1/6/39, giving his age as 43.] which by now, should have been received.
“Hoping that this finds you all well and with kindest regards, believe me…”
R2. 1/9/39 EC’s letter to Mr. [437]:
“Thank you for yours of the 7th. We declare, each time we will not give a reading without first having a request from the person themselves, then do it, and now and then [we have] results as with Mr. [1781]. Just had his application this morning and have set the afternoon of the 16th to try this again. Hope that will be all right with him. I have written him direct. Hope we may be of a service. Of course, we hate for such things to come up, especially when it was already a delayed reading, but we have no control over the information as comes and can of course only send what we get. Hope he will be patient with us and trust we may be of a service…”
R3. 1/9/39 EC’s letter to Mr. [1781]:
“Am in receipt of your application for Membership to the Association. What was gotten apparently is not in line with conditions. I’m making an appointment for the afternoon of the 16th if that will be in keeping with your wishes. Please let me have the address you will be on that day (the 16th), 3:30 to 4:30 E.S.T.
“Regret the delay and hoping to be of a service…”
R4. 1/20/39 EC’s letter to Mr. [1781]:
“We had an appointment for you for a reading on the 16th, but not hearing from you, and not knowing the address for the hour set, we did not undertake this. If you have decided you do not care for this, please let me know. I will be glad to return membership paid. If you would still like to have the information as may be gotten, let me know if Friday afternoon the 3rd of February will be satisfactory for a time for you, 3:30 to 4:30 E.S.T. and let me know, please, where you will be at that hour.
“Sincerely hoping to be of a service…”
R5. 2/2/39 Mr. [437] wired EC giving okay for Mr. [1781]‘s reading and Mr. [1781]‘s address.
R6. 2/3/39 See 1781-2.
Background
Background
B1. 12/12/38 Mr. [257]‘s letter to EC:
“Mr. [437] spent about three hours in my office today in making up the attached questions. [for Mr. [1781] and Mrs. [1780]]
“Please give the readings as arranged and wire Mr. [437] what time each one will be given. Then mail the original reading and a copy to Mr. [437], New York City. He will arrange to collect for the [1780] reading. Send them to him…”
B2. [1781]‘s note:
“Complete physical diagnosis of all conditions you find - the history of the case, treatment and diet to bring body to its normal conditions and equilibrium…”
B3. 12/15/38 GD’s letter to Mr. [437]:
“Owing to his own illness today, Mr. Cayce was unable to keep the appointments for [1780] and [1781] and has asked me to write you making another appointment. We are sorry of this delay, but it cannot be helped. If Mr. Cayce is feeling better tomorrow morning, we will wire you for a verification of your OWN appointment for tomorrow afternoon.
“The first opening we have for these two, we were unable to get today, is Friday, January 13th. I am enclosing two application blanks and would suggest that you get each of these individuals to at least sign them, and fill out the information required. I feel they will get much better results if they make some contact with Mr. Cayce THEMSELVES, instead of letting you do it for them entirely. If they will just sign the applications, and verify the time set for their appointment, agreeing to observe the time WITH Mr. Cayce, I am sure we will ALL get better results. One can take the morning, one the afternoon, - and each one giving the address at which he or she will be during the hour of observing the appointment - 10:30 to 11:30 in the morning, or 3:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon.
“I am getting up the report on the cancer cases and it will be sent to you in a few days. I am sure it will be quite interesting, and I hope helpful.
“Trusting we will be able to get YOUR reading tomorrow, and that it will be constructive in every way, - with kindest regards to you and yours…”
“P.S. Do you wish literature sent to these people so they will be able to familiarize themselves with the procedure, and thus be more PREPARED for the reading?”
B4. 12/17/38 EC’s letter to Mr. [437]:
“Mighty sorry that we missed out on the appointments for the 15th - would have tried to let you know, but I never know myself until the time for the reading whether it can work or not. Hope it will not cause any trouble or anxiety because of the delay. It is very much better, Mr. [437], will the body wishing the reading at least say a word of some nature signing the application or something. There just is a connection somewhere, some way.
“The information about the oil lands: From what my wife said, it is very general, but sincerely hope may be made helpful.
“You have the time for your personal reading the afternoon of the 2nd of January. Be sure and let me know just where you will be the hour: 3:30 to 4:30 EST on that day.
“[Received] note from [949] today - isn’t feeling so good, it seems. Ask Dr. Dobbins who would be a good man to take care of [949] out there. It might save him a lot of trouble, for I can well imagine there are many would-be doctors in that vicinity. I am sure Dobbins could recommend one you could trust.
“Thanking you and hoping everything will work out fine…”
B5. 12/17/38 Mr. [437]‘s letter to EC:
“Naturally I am keenly disappointed that the readings scheduled for Thursday did not come off and I hope that by now you are fully recovered.
“Gladys dropped me a note and has set January 13th as the next available date for the [1780] and [1781] readings.
“As these are both Physical readings, I am hopeful that this date would be advanced as this would be almost six weeks from the time that the readings were asked for. Had I known, and been informed by telephone or wire that Thursday’s readings were not given, I would have gladly postponed the Texas land reading to some future date as this is unimportant.
“I am hoping that we will be able to give some help in the [1760] case.
“I am enclosing herewith a check to cover the Texas and the [1760] readings.
“Hope this finds you all well and with kindest regards…”
B6. 12/20/38 EC’s letter to Mr. [437]:
“Thank you for yours of the 17th; also for the enclosure. You were not more disappointed than we, Mr. [437], that we were unable to get the readings scheduled for Thursday, but as I said before, we do not know until the hour of the reading as to whether we can get it or not. Then it is too late to say anything. I will if at all possible try and get these in before the 13th and will wire you of the time if we can get them in, having some so far ahead, it’s bad when we have a day that we can’t get one, for it then throws everything out of kelter. This, however, we have no control over, and is one of the idiosyncrasies of the work.
“Thank you for everything. I sincerely hope the suggestions for Mr. [1760] will help…”
B7. 12/21/38 EC’s letter to Mr. [437]:
“We undertook to get the Check reading for Mr. [1760] yesterday. I do hope the suggestions help; trust they will be able to get the cooperation of the doctor in charge.
“We have been able, Mr. [437], to change the date of the other two readings [for [1780] and [1781]] to the 4th, morning and afternoon. Be sure and let me have data on each of these if that will be satisfactory. And your own is the afternoon of the 2nd. Be sure and let me know where you will be that afternoon, 3:30 to 4:30.
“Thanking you and sincerely hoping to be of a service…”
B8. 12/23/38 [437]‘s reply: ”…P.S. I will set the [1780) reading for the morning of the 4th and the [1781] reading for the afternoon.”
B9. 1/3/39 Mr. [437] wired address for [1781] to EC.
