GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions that may be submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1787].
-
Now as we find, there are disturbing conditions which prevent the better normal reactions for the physical body.
-
These as we find are affectations in the throat, bronchi and a portion of the lung.
-
We find these are the effect of scar tissue by or from a great amount of temperature, and the causes through same of draining the system of its better activity through the action of the lymph circulation.
-
This tends to cause the hard breathing, an asthmatic reaction at times; drying through nasal passages and throat, and pains through the chest.
-
All of these work upon the sympathetic system in such a manner as to cause great anxiety to the body.
-
The natural inclination from such affection and infection is to cause the lack of proper amount of the red blood supply to the system. A little disturbance at times, especially when there are the recurrent conditions from either atmospheric pressures or the inhalations of dust or of other conditions, - as to cause the irritation to affected portions to reduce the efficiency of the blood supply in its attempt to supply sufficient of the leucocyte to ward off or throw off the disturbed conditions.
-
From same there is the inclination for superacidity throughout the system. At times this tends to work a hardship upon the digestive organism, and so the body has periods when there is little desire for eating, - or the anxiety as produced through a portion of the digestive system, working upon the sympathetic reactions of same we have the restlessness at times, and anxieties throughout the whole of the sympathetic nervous system.
-
Also a reaction from these at times is to the lower hepatics, and a disturbance somewhat through the activity of the bladder as related to the kidneys and the eliminations through same.
-
All of these we find become a part of the disturbance with this body.
-
Then, in making administrations that would be not only helpful but - if consistently applied - would alleviate a great deal of the anxiety and the disturbing forces, gradually RE-CONDITIONING the system as it were:
-
Many phases of the conditions must be taken into consideration. It is true that through a portion of the throat or bronchi and larynx there is the inclination for scar tissue, and such encasement of the circulatory forces as to cause the inclination for an atrophy. Not atrophy in its true sense, but a decrease in the size and in the quantity of the impulse as may be carried through that portion of the circulatory forces.
-
This need NOT cause great anxiety, if the sources are taken into consideration FROM WHICH the impulses arise for both the circulatory forces of the lymph and the blood supply to go through same; and these stimulated to activity in such a manner as to rejuvenate or rebuild those portions of a disturbed system.
-
All portions of the body receive impulses for activity through the nerve SYSTEMS of the body; and these in turn receive impulse from the cerebrospinal as well as the sympathetic or vegetative nerve system that runs parallel or on either side of the cerebrospinal system.
-
These particular portions disturbed with this body receive their greater impulse from the plexus and centers along the upper dorsal and throughout the cervical area, and especially through what may be called the vegetative centers.
-
We would then stimulate these, osteopathically, in such a manner as to aid the system in resuscitating and revivifying these portions of the body.
-
First, then, we would have a series of adjustments osteopathically, with special attention to the upper dorsal and the whole of the cervical area; coordinating at times - during the series of treatments - the lumbar and sacral as well as the lower dorsal plexus center, or the 9th dorsal, WITH the other adjustments made.
-
Take these twice a week for a series of about three weeks; leave off for about two weeks and then have another series. Then have another rest period, and then another series of treatments.
-
And we will find this should have then stimulated the system so that, with the other suggestions followed throughout the same period as indicated here, there will be entirely different reactions in the body; for betterment.
-
Throughout the period we would also use those influences that will tend to allay irritations to the tissue area in the throat, nasal passages and the lungs even themselves; that is, we would inhale the fumes from pure Apple Brandy from an oak charred keg. Prepare same in this manner: In a gallon or two gallon charred oak keg, put at least half a gallon of Pure Apple Brandy. This should be prepared so there are two openings in one end of same; one with a tube or an iron or lead pipe, small, about a quarter inch; the other only a small gimlet hole but so that it might be kept corked when not in use. This is not to be taken internally, only the fumes from same inhaled; by keeping it close to a radiator or fire where the activity of the heat will cause evaporation. And once or twice each day inhale the gas or fumes, much as one would a cigarette, DEEP into the lungs, see? as well as through the nasal passages. Do this once or twice, - at least twice each day; morning upon arising, evening before retiring. This acts not only as a purifier of tissue but enables the tissue itself to be revivified by the stimulation of impulses from the cerebrospinal system through nerve and blood supply.
-
We would also stimulate the circulatory system to carry that which may be assimilated in the blood supply, so as to stimulate a greater supply to the blood stream of those influences through the assimilations of the body that would be effective for the inclinations towards anemia. This as we find may be done by the taking internally of Calcios at least once each day; just sufficient quantity to spread thinly - as butter - upon a wafer or cracker, see? Preferably we would take this with the evening meal.
-
Also be mindful that the diet is such that the eliminations are well provided for; at least one or two evacuations of the alimentary canal each day.
-
Occasionally we would use enemas to cleanse the colon itself from the excess of the eliminating forces as should be expelled by the applications through the osteopathic manipulations.
-
DO NOT do just part! Either do ALL as suggested or NONE of same!
-
But if there is consistency to at least the third or fourth period or round of the osteopathic manipulations, and each day THROUGHOUT the WHOLE period the other properties used and taken as indicated, we should find near to normal reactions for this body of [1787].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is there an osteopath either in Madisonville or nearby that you would suggest for giving these treatments? (A) Just so it is one in sympathy with the directions indicted, or that will make the applications AS INDICATED! Insist upon those being made in THAT manner.
-
We are through for the present.

R1. 1/16/39 EC’s letter to [1787]:
Dear Mr. [1787]:
Hope you have found your information interesting, and sufficiently practical that you will endeavor to at least give it an honest fair trial, and believe from the experience from others - that you will receive wonderful results.
Know we will be anxious about you and desire to hear from you from time to time, and can we be of a help in any way
- please call on us.
Can’t help but feel a bit more personally interested - from the experiences in my own immediate family, of conditions some what similar as your own - in description at least.
Hoping to hear from you - and trusting to have been of a service.

R2. 1/23/39 [1787]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I received your reading together with instructions for treatment the 17th instant.
I took an osteopath treatment that same day from Dr. E. C. Sights [E. C. Sights, D.O.], …, who agreed to give this treatment according to your instructions.
On the 19th I secured a charred keg with Apple brandy as directed by you and have inhaled night and morning as you suggested. To date I have had two osteopath treatments but so far I have failed to get the Calcios. On the night I received your letter I sent a night telegram to the Company in New York asking them to mail a jar to me C.O.D. To date I have heard nothing from them.
I am writing the Company a letter today asking them to fill order at once, as it is my sincere desire and intentions to carry your suggestions out to the letter.
I would like to call your attention to a knot that has developed about an inch or inch and a half above point where the wind pipe passes under the chest bone. This knot is hard and is about one and one-half inches long. It is sensitive when coughing or from the pressure of my finger. I noticed this knot for the first time about two months ago but it has enlarged some since that time. This has me somewhat worried as to its nature. I would be pleased to have your advice.
A complete history of my case as you requested will be mailed to you within a few days.
Yours truly, [1787]
R3. 1/26/39 EC’s letter to [1787]:
Dear Mr. [1787]:
Have yours of the 23rd. Sincerely hope you will soon see real results with the application of the suggestions. Sorry you have that condition developing on throat. The Dr. should be able to take care of that, if not when we have a check up on the progress you are making we will ask a specific question as to that.
Think you will be having your Calcios soon. They are usually quite prompt where it has been suggested for others.
Thank you for letting me hear, and hope you will let us hear every few weeks any way.
With all good wishes
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
R4. 1/29/39 [1787]‘s letter to EC:
…, Ky.
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
You asked that I send a complete history of my case for your files, so I herein submit same to the best of my ability.
In February of 1935 I had Flu which lasted only a few days. I returned to my work for one day and suffered a relapse. This time it was diagnosed as bronchitis. During this illness I was confined to my bed for four weeks.
Returning to my work, I felt no ill effects other than being short-winded and wheezing at night. However I stayed on the job, many times I was compelled to be on the job as long as 24 hours without rest, but this did not seem to worry me, as my weight stayed above normal.
In October of 1937 I took a severe Cold and coughed a great deal, spitting up some blood, but I continued my work for about two weeks. Then the Doctors put me to bed and this time it was pronounced bronchial pneumonia. However I never ran any temp. At this time I was spitting up about four teacups of phlegm every twenty-four hours and each time I spit the phlegm was stained with dark blood.
On November 19th I had a violent hemorrhage vomiting blood. The Doctors were called at once and the hemorrhage was checked.
In a week’s time I seemed to be improving, but on Dec. 1st while sitting up in bed eating my supper I had a second hemorrhage. This time I was moved to the Madisonville Hospital where I continued to spit up large mouthsful of bloody phlegm about every fifteen minutes.
The Doctors in Madisonville ran about ten laboratory tests but fund no T.B. These blood tests showed I had plenty of rich, red blood, more than the normal amount.
On December 7th I was moved to the Hopkinsville Hospital and put under the care of Doctors Gather [Gant Gaither, M.D.] and Thomas. Here numerous sputum tests were run, but still no T.B. was found.
Dr. Gather expressed his opinion as being dust on the lungs. Dr. Thomas said he did not know what my trouble was as he had never had a case similar to this one.
My treatment while in the hospital was iodine taken through the veins, and a capsule, containing, Willow of charcoal, Creosote, Calcium, and Guicol.
On Jan. 1st I was able to go on the Doctors recommendation to San Antonio, Texas.
After reaching San Antonio I began to improve rapidly until I had regained my normal weight in two weeks time, but in February I came down with side pluricy [pleurisy] and was ill during the entire month of February.
On April 11th I returned to … and went to work on the 12th and have continued on the job regularly since. During all this time I have been under the care of a physician. However I have spit up some blood each day since Oct. 1937. During the entire summer and Winter I have wheezed and coughed at night. I also cough some on rising and occasionally during the day.
For the last TWO MONTHS I have spit up very little blood but some each day. I have taken four osteopath treatments and have been using the keg for inhaling as prescribed by you, for two weeks. I have been on the Calcios for about one week.
Since starting your treatment I have not wheezed or coughed any at night. On rising of morning I cough some and spit up a small amount of blood, but later in the day and during the early evening for the past three or four days I have spit up quite a lot of bright red blood and it seems to be increasing. This afternoon the blood increased to such an extent I became alarmed for fear I would hemorrhage.
I would appreciate your advising me on this matter and also the knot on my throat that I wrote you about a few days ago.
If this needs immediate advice you may wire me collect, if not I would appreciate an immediate reply as this has me somewhat worried.
For the past several years I have been over-weight, but during the last three weeks I have lost about six pounds. I still could lose about four pounds before going below normal. I just thought this probably should be brought to your attention.
When I am restored to normal health I shall be glad to put this in affidavit for you if you so desire.
Yours truly,

B1. 12/12/38 [1787]‘s letter to EC:
…, Ky.
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Sir:
For the past four or five years I have been short-winded and would cough some when I exerted myself and on arising of morning. In October of ‘37 I took a severe cold, would cough and spit up phlegm at night and there was quite a bit of blood with the phlegm.
I had Drs. Finley and Harwock with me and they pronounced it bronchial trouble.
I had two severe hemorrhages in November of last year.
I then had Doctor Gather [Gant Gaither, M.D.] of Hopkinsville who said that I had dust on my lungs.
I left Hopkinsville Hospital on Jan. 1, 1938 and went to San Antonio, Texas on the recommendation of the doctors, where I stayed until April 15th.
I went to work immediately after my return to my home in … and have worked continuously since that time.
I have my normal weight, eat well, and sleep well, but I am shorter-winded than I was before my illness a year ago. I still cough and wheeze a lot and occasionally spit up a little blood.
I have had several X-Rays made in the last year and numbers of sputum TESTS run. There is no sign of any lung infection, but my lung shows scarred tissue.
Dr. Gather of Hopkinsville says that he is sure my trouble is dust on the lung and he doesn’t think I’ll ever be any better.
Dr. Finley of … says he is equally sure after seeing the pictures that Dr. Gather read, that it is not dust of the lungs, but he DOES not know just what caused the scarred tissue. He also doubts if I will ever improve very much.
I am Supt. of The … Coal Co. of …, Ky., and Mr. […], President of the Co told me about you and suggested that I write you a letter saying he knew of a case in Hopkinsville that you cured through some supernatural power that you possess.
My name in full is: [1787], Age 48, Date of birth Aug. 7, 1890.
I would appreciate a letter from you regarding my trouble.
Yours, very truly, [1787]
B2. 12/15/38 EC’s letter to [1787]:
Dear Mr. [1787]:
Have yours of 12th and note what you have to say about your condition - sincerely hope may be of a service to you. Appears to be something a cycle as pertaining to Nortonville Coal Co. [Norton Coal Corp., Nortonville, Ky.] as I suppose one of the most successful reading that I ever gave in my 38 years of trying to serve other was give on this date, the 15 of Dec 1910 [1911] for the then Pres of Nortonville Coal Co. at Nortonville [[287]?].
Am enclosing you a blank for membership application. We only make appointments for members of the Assn. Sincerely hope may be of a service to you, for the most marvelous reading to me was for My own wife who is still living and in good health
- and supposed just such a condition as you describe for your self.
Thanking you, and any questions further or data that you would like regards our work will be more than glad to answer.
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
