This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 24th day of November, 1939, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [1789], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., through her sister, Miss [2268].

Born May 3, 1906, about 11:00 A. M., at 62 Charles St., Boston, Mass. Time of Reading … Street, 10:50 to 11:30 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.

1. HLC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions she has submitted, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [1789].

3. In giving the interpretations of the records here for this entity, we find that in many ways the present development is dependent upon other environmental influences, - as to what application may be made by the entity at the present, or during the present experience.

4. These interpretations, then, are chosen with the desire that the experience be a helpful one; aiding the entity in understanding itself and the purposes for which it entered this material sojourn.

5. Then, these are given with that desire and purpose, and should be analyzed, studied by the entity. It is not that these should be studied or looked upon merely as a rule by which the entity would be governed, but rather as the sign or the indication of what fields of activity, what tenets are to be entertained and magnified in the experiences of the entity; that there may be kept the normal balance in physical, mental and spiritual relationships, - not only to the material environs but to those influences as may aid the entity to fill those places, those purposes for which it entered into material sojourn in this experience.

6. From the astrological aspects we find these as signs or omens, and not as influences that become rockbound, or that must happen irrespective of what the entity does about same.

7. For, - realize that while you have a body, mind and soul, they are one; just as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one; and that in the application of the WILL these are magnified, one or the other, in thy relationships to others.

8. The question then becomes only, which shall it be? Self, self-aggrandizement, self-exaltation? Or the spirit of truth, IRRESPECTIVE of what may be the SEEMING hardships as may be encountered in materiality?

9. Know, - He, the Father, has not willed that any soul should perish. Thus He has prepared a way, a manner through which each soul may become aware of its relationships to the Creative Forces.

10. Thus we are not tempted, nor are we given hardships, beyond that we are able to bear.

11. Ye may not bear them alone, but rely upon Him who hath given, “Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light” to those who put their trust wholly in Him.

12. In the astrological sense, then, as indicated, we find Venus as both a positive and a negative force; or as that which makes for the enjoying of beauty, love, grace, and of those things as partake not only of the material but the mental and spiritual beauty. Yet these may be so easily trampled upon as to become drugs to many.

13. Hence see, know, feel, understand, that only those things that are beautiful in friendship, love, hope, grace, patience, are those influences that give the greater concept of, the greater understanding of the relationships that things, conditions or what not, may bear to the whole; that is, to conditions, physically, mentally.

14. Then, look not upon those things that have been, or that have caused disturbance, other than as steppingstones. Know that such have been for thy understanding, that ye may create and give in thy activity and associations with thy fellow man, more and more of that love and beauty which is manifested in the TRUTH, - as indicated in this phase of the astrological as well as the mental and spiritual choices of the entity in its manifesting of same in its relationships to others.

15. Thus may these become as helpful forces in the experience.

16. Jupiter is a benevolent influence also, in that the activities will have to do with the masses or groups, rather than the activities of certain force or power; yet these will be individual in their relationships to others, - yet a benevolent force.

17. Thus to have friends, be friendly; to find that which is love, beauty, joy, MAKE these in the experiences of others. Not those that attune or give expression only for the body-forces or self-indulgences or appetites, but those that are as the pearl of great price, - a smile, a loving touch, a tender word, - which are worth much more than all those influences or forces of MATERIAL things.

18. As to the appearances in the earth, - these we find quite varied; yet as they have been at times quite close in the returning forces, we find the entity rather sensitive, or EMOTIONAL in its feelings, in its relationships, - rather temperamental at times, as would be the very influences indicated by the astrological aspects.

19. Yet these may be helpful in the experience if they will be kept in the directions indicated for whatever the choice may be, provided the ideal is founded not in spiritualistic but spiritual natures, - or spirituality; in that these are done not for self but for the glory of the love for Him who has first loved thee; He that is the way, the truth and the light.

20. This does not indicate that the entity is to be a recluse, nor one that shuts self away from associations with others; not the goody-goody individual, but one that is joyous in its relationships with others.

21. And give - give - give of self in activity, in thought, and in the relationships which bring harmonious and hopeful influences in the experiences of others.

22. Before this we find the entity was in the land of the present nativity, during those periods when there was much questioning as to the tenets, purposes of those who were indicated in the spiritualistic experiences.

23. The entity being of that temperament suffered under those persecutions, and often was brought under submission by the first experiences of ducking.

24. Thus the entity finds both good and bad forces from same in the present. Here we will find the needs for definite stands to be taken. While the entity is afraid of water in a sense, we find that water - or color and water - must be a manner or a means or a channel for the greater expression, if those portions of the experience would become the greater outlet for the great emotional forces in the experience of the entity, - through those activities as Mana Smyrth.

25. The entity gained and lost, for there were the abilities for the temper, and the attempt to “get even.”

26. Remember rather, as has been indicated, “Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord.”

27. Then, create - not by thought, not by act or deed, that as would bring destructive forces. Hence all hate, all malice, all jealousy must be put away, if a soul, an entity, would indeed know love and beauty and joy and happiness. These beget of themselves, and bring into the experience that as an individual manifests in its associations with others.

28. In that experience we find that the entity desired to be active as the teacher, yet never attained wholly to the periods of such activity.

29. Before that we find the entity was in the French land, during those periods when there were the greater appreciations of the artistic abilities, - both of the Dutch and a part of the French.

30. And the artistic forces as were being studied, - a part of the great exponent of art, Rubens, - the entity followed the more; being in the name then Heimer.

31. The entity in that experience became the great student in expression of the Rubens figures, - the ability to give the detail especially in dress and things as related to same.

32. Hence in the present we find that the entity’s activity should follow in this line, - whether in oil or in the water color; but, as indicated, both of these should be a part of the experience; and then AS there is the greater development, the giving of the fuller expression, as to whether it is to be wholly in oil or in the water color will become a part of the experience.

33. By all means follow rather the composition, the texture - not only in portraits but rather the whole background of Rebens, - of whom the entity was such an exponent, or student, through those experiences in that land.

34. Those periods brought great development for the entity; for the entity became one that was able to know and have and to give expression of same in the very activities in same throughout the experience.

35. Yet in the MENTAL SELF it has made rather the inclination to shut self away. Keep this out of the experience in the present. See life, know life, experience life, through the associations with others.

36. Before that we find the entity was in the ‘city in the hills and the plains.’ There the entity was among the Grecian peoples who came into the land; being among the exponents of the Grecian arts, especially in the sculptury.

37. Hence we will find the abilities of the entity in the present to give expression to figures in ways and manners that stand as among the greater exponents who are able to give perspective to a figure in WHATEVER may be the choice of background for the execution of same!

38. The entity was among those who joined that teacher in the ‘city in the hills and plains,’ and who sought to give the greater help, WHEN there had been the convincing of self as to the truths that were being presented in the experience.

39. There was brought by the entity into the experience much that had to do with (and as may be seen as yet) that period of statuary, or the carvings on the walls and facades in that experience.

40. Much disturbance physically and mentally arose through the period, and yet - as the entity then found - the greater outlet in its abilities to depict the beautiful in its art, so may it find same in the present.

41. Before that we find the entity was in the Egyptian land, during those periods when choices were made for the activities of individuals in their varied temperaments, or actions among their associates.

42. There we find the entity was a decorator, rather, in the Temple Beautiful, as well as in the palace or house of the King, the Priest, and many of those who journeyed into the land, - even from other lands.

43. And such abilities may find expression in the entity in the present, - whether applied to dress (that is, in the making of unusual patterns of same) or to the expression in the home, or as may relate to individual characterizations and compositions in paintings.

44. All of these become a part of the entity’s experience, and there only needs to be the application for same to become a material expression in the present.

45. Then the name was Su-She-Pot.

46. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, and that to which it may attain, and how:

47. The greater there is the adherence to the ideals as were set in Him, who is the truth, the light, in its relationships with others day by day, the greater will be the joy and the harmony in the mental and the spiritual life.

48. The greater there is the adherence to the characterization, the school of Rubens in the art, the greater may be the outlet for a success in material ways in this sojourn.

49. Make them one!

50. Ready for questions.

51. (Q) Will I be able to earn my livelihood through art; if so, will it be portraits in pastel, crayon, oil, etc., if not, how else can I earn a living? (A) As indicated, these are the fields of expression; and especially following the school of Rubens. They may be as of pastorals and portraits, or the water color. And THEN the fields in which there would be given the greater expression would be chosen as the lone field for activity, as the abilities and the outlets for same develop.

52. (Q) If I pursue Art as my life work, would it be necessary for me to have a manager, or could I personally conduct the business end? (A) Better to personally conduct the business itself, having an agent for an outlet. For it will not be very long before some of the pictures will be hung, that would be not only given a place but make for greater fields of outlet.

53. (Q) In what connection did I know my mother, [2452] in a previous existence? (A) In the experience through the sojourn in the land before this.

54. (Q) My father? (A) As we find, in the French experience were the closer associations; though known in several others also.

55. (Q) My twin sister, [2268]? (A) This has been a very close association, - and much to be worked out together. In practically each sojourn or experience, a very close association.

56. (Q) My other sister [2117]? (A) These associations we find were more in the Persian and Grecian, or ‘city in the hills and plains’ - for they were companions, and leaned one upon the other; but the other sister was rather closely associated also in that same experience.

57. (Q) What type of studies should I pursue for the unfolding of my spiritual growth? (A) The 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th of St. John; with the 30th and 31st of Deuteronomy; not that these should become just as rote, but know them, and the beauty of them; and put some of it in each picture ye paint!

58. We are through for the present.

R1. 12/20/39 Sister [2117]‘s letter: “[1789] was simply thrilled at her reading. It has revealed so much that I have been puzzled about during her illness. There is so much to be worked out and so much good to be done with a pair of willing hands.”

R2. 12/28/39 Letter from [1789]: “I feel so much happier in spirit since I received the reading. It made a big difference to me after I read it. I was so very glad. I read it many times and like it better all the time.

“It seems incredible that any human being could see and feel things the way you do.

“I think the reading is very good and helpful, also beautiful. I enjoyed reading it much.

“The Rubens’ influence has been noticed in my work before, which makes this very convincing. I shall study up on Rubens’ work and period, which I have already done to some extent in Boston.

“Do you know the water color and oil mediums are considered difficult to employ, and I shall be very happy to use them successfully, as Rubens was master of the oil. As for the water color, it is peculiar the way things arrange themselves. I have always been somewhat afraid of a lot of water, and yet that’s where water color painting comes in.

“The experiences of Mana Smyrth I should like to understand better, but as you are coming to New York soon I should much like to talk to you about the reading as putting it into questions is rather lengthy and difficult.

“[2668] tells me that you promised to pay us a visit when you come here to see my work. I am looking forward to meeting you and doing the portrait. Yes, I do prefer it from life to a photograph.

“Of course I do not know when I should be in Virginia. That seems quite far away. I think so many interesting things can be done through photography, that I would like to see some of yours very much indeed.

“We all think it wonderful of you to give [2117] and [2268] a reading. Yes, [2268] is a twin to me, and it would be certainly very interesting to see where it fits in, as you say with mine.

“I hope sincerely that I will be able to make it up to you through good work, for all that you are doing for us. I am very grateful that you are trying to help us above every thing else, and I don’t think you shall ever regret it.

“When are you coming, and where do you expect to stay in New York? Do you intend to lecture? If so, please be so kind and let us know where so we could go to hear you, as I have never yet heard you speak and would like to very much.

“How very kind and thoughtful of you to send me the book of poetry. It was quite a surprise…”

R3. 1/26/40 Letter from [1789]: ”…I am glad to write to you at last. I have heard from [2117] that you don’t like the cold weather and are not coming to New York yet, so we won’t be seeing you so soon.

“Well, the portrait will have to wait until you arrive here well and comfortable.

“Sorry you were so ill at Christmas time. Yes, I can quite understand how disturbed you must feel when people call for help and you are unable to give it. I think it wonderful of you to give [2117] and [2268] readings, when I have not even done anything from my side as yet.

“Could you please name what city or country the ‘city in the hills and plains’ stands for in my reading, and - ‘There was brought by the entity into the experience much that had to do with (and as may be seen as yet) that period of statuary, or the carvings on the walls and facades in that that experience.’ It does not by any chance mean that I am am to do statuary in the future, does it? The expression ‘and as may be seen as yet’ is what puzzles me.

“I feel forever grateful to you for your friendship and sympathy for our little family, that you express in every one of your letters. We are indeed fortunate to call you our friend.

“I have had a cold and was laid up for two days, resting up considerably. What a delight to be up and about again.

“I am reading the parts in the Bible that you gave in the reading. It is good. It will take a long time for me to really know them.

“How very wonderful of you to have written to me on the first day of the new year. I appreciate it and thank you most heartily…”

R4. 3/21/40 Letter from [1789]: ”…I am delighted with your coming to New York. At last I shall see you.

“I hope you are planning to sit for the portrait, provided you can spare the time without too much inconvenience. It shall be greatly appreciated.

“We all find [2117]‘s reading so very interesting, strange and enlightening. What an endless journey a soul undergoes through its many incarnations.

“Don’t you find it most astonishing her having had the same name once before, and besides that being related to you positively staggering in its surprise. Needless to say, she is much delighted with her reading. It is certainly amazing the way she is destined to deal with children, for she has already been doing the right thing indirectly.

“Thank you for explaining about the ‘city in the hills and plains.’ How strange it all is. I read the Persian history UHJLTD and found it very enjoyable, interesting, picturesque and of course beautiful. I suppose this was the place where we all knew each other and you were the teacher.

“I also looked through all the bulletins of the Association, which gives me more of an idea of your work. The life readings especially have a great attraction from many points of view.

“I hope you health and Mrs. Cayce’s has greatly improved, for it is quite a nuisance trying to do anything when one does not feel well.

“If by any chance you will not be able to give me much time, then perhaps for the time being we might do a rather quick drawing or painting until we can think of a way out.

“In the meantime I wish you a very sunny and joyous Easter…”

“I was indeed surprised to hear from you.

“Sorry, but I don’t have any information for you. I have never done any research in regard to my former incarnation of Mana Smyrth, nor do I know of anyone else who has.

“I most certainly wish you all the luck in the world with this project.

“It would of course be quite interesting to hear from you again.

“Thank you.”
