This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 16th day of January, 1939, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [1793], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., via Mr. [815].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 10:45 to 11:00 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.
-
GC: You will have before you the body and enquiring mind of [1793] in his office at …, N.Y.C., who seeks information, advice and guidance as to how he may obtain finances necessary to help his ward, [631]. You will answer the questions he has submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [1793]; and those conditions, those desires and purposes relative to [631].
-
In giving advice and counsel regarding such associations and relations, desires and purposes and wishes, many phases of man’s experience and man’s endeavors should be taken into consideration, - rather than saying alone “I will.”
-
Rather are the circumstances in the present much in that manner as has been said, “Man’s extremity becomes God’s opportunity.”
-
And unless one can truly say within, “Thy will, O God, be done in me, through me,” and then the life, the activities, the associations with the fellow man day by day in accordance with that prayer, that supplication - there is little hope for such an entity or body.
-
To say that through the expediences [experiences?] of death, or separation, another is desired to be aided in a material manner that there may be personal satisfaction, - is this in keeping with that which has been and is shown in the lessons and in the life of Him who is the Way - though it be through the Cross, even as ye are experiencing?
-
Is it not rather, then, that thou shalt use all thou hast in hand today; to offer thyself, thy abilities, thy purposes, thy desires upon the altar of love and sacrifice; that there may come help in HIS way, not thine own!
-
For God is not mocked, and whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
-
Then let thy activity, thy prayer, thy supplication be in THOSE directions, that:
-
“As Thou seest, O God, use Thou me; that there may come to thy children who seek to know in this material experience the greater truth, the greater mercy Thou may show; not to be used in self-indulgence, in self-honor or glory, but rather in self-effacement; that the glory Thou hast shown in Him may be manifested in the lives and hearts, and in the bodies of these Thy children!”
-
This is the manner, then, - through prayer, though meditation; not as one shutting himself away from its fellow man, but knowing that it is as ye do it unto the least of thy neighbors, thy brethren, thy fellow men day by day, that ye bespeak of the fountains of purposes within thine own heart and soul respecting thy Creator!
-
Then, not by might and by power but by the love that thou hast for thy fellow man, may this thing be accomplished in thy desire, in thy endeavor; that these be made one with God’s purposes with thee AND thy ward!
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through for the present.

R1. 1/18/39 EC’s ltr. to [1793]:
Dear Mr. [1793]:
Hope you find the information of interest while am sure at first glance it may appear to be fantastical or idealistic - and of little practical use - believe with a bit of study and meditation you will find it of real worth - and hope you you will be able to apply it in your experience in such a manner as to be most helpful to all concerned.
Know feel a real interest in you and especially in Mrs. [631]
- so will appreciate hearing from you
Hoping to have been of some little help
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
R2. 1/20/39 Mr. [1793]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce;-
I have received your letter of January 18th and appreciate very much your interest and kindliness.
When I asked for a reading I believed that I had but one thing in mind - to help [631]. I seemed unable to do this by my own efforts. During my life I have had a good business, but the New Deal has destroyed it. Therefore I wished to learn if aid might come to me from other sources, aside from my own efforts that seem so futile. Rightly or wrongly I am much inclined toward the thought of predestination and that we “go” when our time is up. And so, it seemed to me not improper to make the enquiry I made. But I must conclude that I did not know what was in my own mind - that consciously or unconsciously I was lying to myself. There seems no other possible conclusion after your reading. I believe that I wanted to do an unselfish act for another. I must have been mistaken. The suggestion, in one paragraph of the reading is that I desired the death of another to aid [631] AND for my own personal satisfaction. Another paragraph suggests that my motives are based on self-indulgence, self-honor and glory instead of self-effacement. A very devastating criticism, but perhaps true - I do not know. Rather than distrust your reading I distrust myself. It appears that I have been deceiving myself.
At this time I know of no material way that [631] can be helped. I saw her ten days ago and shall see her again on Sunday. I was AMAZED at the change for the better in her. It seemed a myracle miracle?]. May the improvement continue or at the least hold its own.
The “information” did not seem to me fantastic. I believe I can understand its practical use. I hope to be able to apply it in a proper manner but I do not know if I can measure up to it.
Thanking you again for your interest and help that I greatly appreciate.
Sincerely yours Mr. [1793]
R3. 1/24/39 EC’s letter to Mr. [1793]:
Dear Mr. [1793]-
Thank you for yours of the 20th - just wish might sit down and talk with you about all this. Hard to put it in black and white - what one would like to say on such a subject, and sincerely hope may have this opportunity some day.
“Destiny” and “Predestination” are subjects that few have the same ideas about, for many reasons from different angles, both my be right, yet both wrong, to the other fellow. But you have a positive fact that with a change of attitude on your part - a change came in the condition of the one you would surround with LOVE and CARE, as to its cause, it is either this or that. We forget often we are Physical, Mental and Spiritual bodies, and there is something eternal in that combination. Something that changes not. Choice - has ever been man’s part - we choose this or that - the end of that choice is predestined - by spiritual laws but we do the choosing, just as Adam did when he choose to listen to Eve wrather than to the word of GOD. We every since are in the same position as they. As to what we accredit the attitude we take - as to the cause of this or that - we can only answer within our own hearts and minds.
But enough of trying to answer questions that have puzzled the minds of the sages for ages. Am happy to know Mrs. [631] is better. Just feel she will continue to do so - lets pray for that. There is power in pray for all of us - God is - and He answers prayer - when our arms are short - but our hearts and purposes pure with Him. He does for us that as is impossible to be done otherwise. Then it is up to us to use that he gives us in Glory to HIM and not to ourselves.
That is what this work has shown me Mr. [1793] - I know of my self can do nothing - but does He work in and through me - He can and does remove mountains.
May His love and Mercy keep us all
Sincerely Edgar Cayce
R4. 4/26/39 Letter reporting on Mrs. [631]‘s condition: “It is an inspiration to listen to you talk as I did tonight. It occurred to me while you were talking to ask you for a Life Reading, which I did do. I shall hope for an early one but early or late it should be helpful to me.”

Background
Background
B1. 12/20/38 Letter reporting on physical-mental condition of his ward, Mrs. [631], for whom he had secured previous readings:
This is what I would like to have you do - it is within your scope.
There is an estate in trust, I shall inherit 1/3 of this trust on the death of one person. The trust is invested in “Securities.” If that one person dies I shall come into possession of my 1/3 share. If securities remain at around present prices I shall receive enough value, I believe, to make it possible for me to give up my business and to remove [631] from Rockland [Rockland State Hospital, Orangeburg, N.Y.] and see that she receives every treatment prescribed by you. All I want to know if you can tell me is, shall I receive that inheritance in time to rescue and restore the brain of [631].
Can you do this? If so will you give the necessary reading as soon as you can do so?
You need not question my integrity. All you need consider is can I receive such inheritance before the brain of [631] is lost forever.
As I have said I do not know your limitations - if any. Can you do, as I have outlined? If you can, please let me know this also any requirements for a “reading.”
I do not know the intricacies of your readings. What I would like to know is, can you read what I may expect from life - this is in relation to [631]. I do not think I need to be told what to do. I think I know that already. What I want to know is CAN I do it.
If you can give me such a reading, please do so, AT YOUR EARLIEST OPPORTUNITY.
Someday I shall ask a reading about myself. Maybe it will be interesting and surprising. Today I am interested only in others. This too is merely a question of money. It’s not enough to have myself read but doubtless I shall have later.
I am at my office … 6th floor every day of my life barring holidays and Sundays. I am here from about 9.30 A.M. until, at the earliest 3 P.M. and often five or six P.M. I am usually absent - for luncheon from about 12.10 to nearly 1 P.M. - outside of that “I am there” between 9.30 A.M. to say 3.30 P.M.
If you can read me I want to be read as soon as possible.
I want to know what I am like but principally I want to know what you think is my destiny. Shall I live to inherit - Shall I do with my inheritance what I have planned. When shall I inherit? Will it be soon enough to rescue [631].
I want answers to those questions. I want the RIGHT answer. Who can give them?
Yes Mr. Cayce for a reading is, as far as I know 100% BUT as you probably know, no “orthodox” will accept what you say - “YOUR READING.”
I am very much pleased to read your hope “the best comes of her.” It cannot be done under present circumstances. Nothing can be done without money. That is in the lap of the Gods.
Cordially, [1793]
