This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 23rd day of March, 1939, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [1797], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 10:40 to 11:10 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will have before you [1797] born August 19, 1899, in New York City, who is in his office, 15th floor, New York City, and also the information which he secured through this channel in his Life Reading on January 21, 1939. You’ll answer in detail the questions which he has presented regarding his Life Reading in relation to his life work.

2. EC: Yes, we have the enquiring mind of that entity now known as or called [1797] and the information which has been given respecting the activities of the entity through the material plane.

3. In giving the answers to the questions indicated here, it is well that the entity consider that all phases of his activities are included in the information applied. The purpose, as indicated, is that the entity use same not for material gains alone but to fulfil that place, that purpose for which each soul enters a material experience.

4. Thus, through the application of the abilities, the entity may gain a greater and a closer relationship with the Creative Forces, - in being and in filling those purposes in the material experience.

5. Keep this in mind, then, in interpreting that which has been given, as well as that which may be indicated here.

6. For, material gains - alone - are far from fulfilling the purposes of a soul’s entrance into materiality.

7. Ready for questions.

8. (Q) In my recent Life Reading [1797-1, Par. 27-A] the following appears - “Then, in terms of the present day - those securities that are of a POSITIVE and not PAPER nature become channels through which the entity may apply self and find a satisfying; provided same is in keeping with the ideals of the entity.” Just what is meant by securities of a POSITIVE and not PAPER nature? (A) Securities of a positive nature are those that represent the products of the soil for the aiding in preserving of man’s experience or existence in the material plane; and not those as would be represented in figures as of a building or of such natures.

9. (Q) Can they be named or examples given? Please make this as clear and specific as possible. (A) This as just indicated is as an example and a specific condition.

10. (Q) Again in the same reading [Par. 52-A] there appears - “In those fields of activity as has been indicated, in which there are securities of any nature pertaining to those things that are of REAL VALUE, rather than PAPER, become an outlet for the entity. Remain close to the soil, the productions of same, securities that entail LAND rather than the ACTIVITIES of men, the production of the STOREHOUSES OF LAND, rather than of man’s endeavor.” What is meant here by securities that are of REAL VALUE rather than PAPER? (A) The same as has just been indicated. Those in which there is the representation of the product of the soil, or the storehouse of nature for man’s preservation of life itself. Just as indicated, and as an illustration here: Rather than properties that may have a fictitious value OR specific value, if used or occupied by individuals who have been able and who are in the present through financial activities able to pay large rents, or for the pleasures of life or things of the nature, - deal in securities that would make for the manufacturing or making of those things which are for the SECURITIES of the people’s dwelling, or IN LIFE Itself! See?

11. (Q) Again during the recent Life Reading, and in answer to a question [Par. 61-A] this appears - “Securities wherein there is the production of the storehouses of the land, rather than of hand.” What is meant by this? What securities are those of the production of the storehouses of the land? Can they be named or examples given? (A) As just indicated, those that supply life and the ability for the functioning of same; that is - as an implication - have investments a great deal more in wheat, corn, rye, oats, barley, hay and such, than in big buildings or such natures.

12. (Q) From the information in my Life Reading I have prepared a list of the different fields of business which may be indicated. Please indicate which one or more of these would be the best field of business for me to engage in, in looking for success and a satisfying life. (A) (Interrupting) Remember: Satisfying is not attained merely in attaining or gaining material security or satisfaction, but in that in which creative forces are expressed through spiritual activity, - those that are implied from the DESIRE, from those activities in which the MANY are aided rather than the gratifying of self and self’s own indulgences.

13. (Q) If more than one, please name them in order of the best one for me; first, the next second and so on:- Purchase and sale of Real Estate. (A) This would be third or fourth.

14. (Q) Purchase and sale of commodities, such as coffee, rubber, hides, grain, wool, cotton, oil, metals. (A) These would be second.

15. (Q) Purchase and sale of oil properties or oil royalties. (A) These would be second or third.

16. (Q) First mortgages secured by Real Estate? (A) These would be first.

17. (Q) First mortgage bonds secured by properties of public utility. Industrial-railroad-oil companies. (A) This would be third or fourth.

18. (Q) Municipal bonds, secured by faith and credit and real estate owned by individuals in towns, cities, counties, states. (A) These would come in secondary conditions.

19. (Q) Debenture bonds and stocks of companies which process commodities to prepare them for public use. (A) This would be in the first class.

20. (Q) Debenture bonds and stocks of companies which engage in construction of buildings or whose products are used in buildings. (A) This would be second or third.

21. (Q) Debenture bonds and stocks of public utility and oil companies. (A) These in the secondary class.

22. (Q) In which department of this business will I find my greatest usefulness? (A) In the buying of issues for sale by others? (B) In selling direct to the public? (C) In selling to other dealers in the same business who in turn sell to the public? (D) In advising individuals or seeking individuals who need advice as to how best to employ their funds for investment in this field? (A) In D.

23. (Q) In advising individuals or seeking individuals who need advice as to how best to employ their funds for investment in this field? (A) This is the better, as indicated; though this may include those in the other, of course.

24. (Q) Please explain just how I should go about this and how I can best serve others in this business? (A) As indicated, the activities of the entity in its experiences and sojourns through the material plane have fitted the entity especially for such.

Then those activities in the present are in direct line with those influences and forces that would lead in such directions. Then carry on in those very natures as have been outlined.

25. (Q) How should I engage this business? What type of organization, or what firm should I seek to engage in this business? (A) This must be worked out within self and its associations and its relations. For, as has been indicated and as indicated here, it is necessary for ideals to be set up as to individual relationships as well as to choice and character of products or securities that are to be indicated in the activity of the individual. And these must respond to the ideals that are set.

26. (Q) Can I find my greatest usefulness in this type of business in my present association or must I seek some new connection? (A) This as we find may be found in the present associations, with some new connections combined. For, as has been indicated, it would be well for the entity to form its own activities in connections with some present associates.

27. (Q) In what city should I make my headquarters? (A) Either in the present surroundings or farther East.

28. (Q) Shall I continue to make my headquarters in New York City or should I plan to make my headquarters in some other city? If so, which city? (A) As just indicated, this may be planned to be retained as in the present environs or, if chosen, or if it appeals to the individual activities, with others in farther eastern cities.

29. (Q) In my Life Reading [Par. 63-A] I was advised to seek advice and guidance from Mr. [1151]. If this refers to Mr. [1151], in regard to what matters should I seek advice from him? (A) Those relations of financing the various activities and organizations to which the entity should become associated or affiliated in its activities.

30. (Q) How can he help me to greater usefulness and a more satisfying life? (A) In using that which has been and should be the policy of this entity, “Thou art thy brother’s keeper.”

31. (Q) Was Mr. [1497] [brother of [1151]] referred to in my Life Reading? If so, in regard to what matters should I seek advice from him? (A) This may develop some in these activities later; we do not find this the one meant in the main.

32. (Q) In my Life Reading I was advised to seek advice and guidance from [261]. I believe this refers to [261]. In regard to what matters should I seek advice from him? How can he help me to greater usefulness and a more satisfying life? (A) In the CHARACTER of securities and commodities as related to the character of activities in which the entity may engage or find itself in its active service.

Here we will find that those policies followed by [261] would be well to add with those which have been indicated that may be instilled within self from association with [1151]. The policies of these two individuals combined with self would be those helpful influences as referred to.

33. (Q) Would I find usefulness and a satisfying life in an association with [1388], % Bank of …, … St., in a new venture of a financial nature which he has in mind? (A) So long as the policies, so long as the ideals and the purposes are in accord with the ideals and purposes of the entity in the associations with such as indicated, would be most satisfactory. But where they deviate from that as indicated that should be the purpose, the intent and the activity, leave off!

34. (Q) Would I find usefulness and a satisfying life in an association with E. P. Frazee, of 120 B’way, in the securities business? (A) These are not as we find in keeping with those characters as indicated that are the better for the entity to apply self in relationship to.

35. (Q) Would I find usefulness and a satisfying life in an association with Hugo Campagnoli, of 225 B’way, in the securities business? (A) In so far as they are in line with that indicated as best, if the policies and ideals are in keeping with that indicated.

And remember, there is not a differentiation between the ideals of your future life and of your present dealing with thy fellow man. For remember, one depends upon the other. What hast thou done with thy search for thy soul?

36. (Q) Would I find usefulness and a satisfying life in an association with Robert McAteer, of #1 Wall St., in the securities business? (A) As we find, there are some portions of same that might be very well, but there is an accompanying purpose there we would not take.

37. (Q) From the foregoing questions it is evident that I am trying to discover in what field of work or type of business I may find my greatest usefulness, a satisfying life and security for my family. Please advise me in the greatest detail possible how I may do this? (A) This has been outlined; but remember, the details and the associations, and the purposes and the ideals, can ONLY be CORRECTLY and purposely formed within thine own self.

As to the character, the nature, the ideals, - these can be set before thee; but THOU must choose of thine OWN volition! For it is as of old, “There is today set before thee good and evil, life and death - choose thou.” As to say that you should walk with this individual or with that individual, that you should accept this policy or that policy, must be the choice within self and we would not suggest from here, - save as to those whom we have referred to, with whom the entity should counsel. For those policies, or the policies of those individuals, are in keeping with that which is the purpose for the entrance of individuals into material activity, - that they may become the greater channels of blessings to mankind!

R2. 7/10/39 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [1797]:

Dear Mr. [1797]:

Thanks for yours of the 6th. The check reading for the boy [1817] we will try on the Morning of the 17th. Be sure to let us have the address, and any special questions that may occur to you or Mrs. […] or the young man - for am sure he is interested, and hope he knows what it is all about.

The reading for Mr. [1959], you know, we will be glad to do what ever we can. Am enclosing a blank - please have him fill this out and return with and [a?] special question he would like to ask - giving the address for the morning of the 19th. Both of these will be 10.30 to 11.30 E.S.T. on their respective days. Remember we are on Standard time - and you have Day-light time.

Yes, we had a good meeting. Wish you might have been with us. Think you would have really enjoyed the time here. Do hope you and Mrs. […] can be with us next year.

Have been kept pretty busy since the meeting but seem to be keeping in fair good shape and am sure there is good from most of the readings from the reports - and that is what counts after all.

R3. 8/15/39 Letter reporting on his son’s reading, 1817-2:

I wish that it was as easy to understand my life reading as [1817]‘s health reading. I have spent days and weeks on end studying my life reading and to me it is still too obscure to know just what is indicated for me. I wish I knew just what to do about it for I am rather discouraged about the outlook for my present business and would welcome the opportunity to follow a clear course if it could appear clear to me.

Wish knew just what to suggest about the life reading - if could have chance to go over this with you would like it. But, you have had Hugh Lynn - also [257]‘s explanation and they are much better than I am sure.

Possibly a reading to explain same by questions might help

• that merely as a suggestion. Know we will be glad to do what ever we can to make it more worth while.

R5. 8/30/39 Mr. [1797]‘s ltr. to Mr. [1797]:

I am afraid you received the impression from my previous letter that I was complaining because I have failed to understand my life reading. I regret that my letter seemed to contain such a spirit, if it did. Nothing was further from my intention. I just feel very stupid and unimaginative that I haven’t been able to figure it out. Hugh Lynn and [257] were both very kind and have given me a lot of their time but I believe neither of them have been able to see just what is indicated or just what steps I should take.

I am more than ever concerned over the future of this business in which I am engaged and believe further more that the firm with which I am now connected is not the ideal employer for me. Also the one thing I am certain of from my readings is that some change is indicated.

I want to ask your advice, would you, in view of my previous readings, if you were I, try to get some additional information thru another reading? From your experience in these matters would you expect to be able to get something more definite by trying again? If you think it is worth trying again would you care to suggest any questions for me to ask?

R7. 9/15/39 Mr. [1797]‘s ltr. to EC:

NEW YORK Dear Mr. Cayce,

I am going to follow your suggestion and try to get thru you, if you will be willing, a more definite indication of just what purpose I may fulfill here and just how I may be most useful. Certainly, in these troubled times there must be some way in which I can be really useful and therefore more satisfied.

At this time I want to ask you to save some period for me at an early date, possibly sometime towards the end of next week or maybe next Saturday if this should be convenient for you. I am preparing certain questions this week-end and will send them along to you the first of the week. If you will let me know the period during which you plan to undertake this reading I will advise you just where I will be at that time.

You know from what I have already written you how anxious I am to have some help on this problem and you must realize how very much I will appreciate any help you can give me.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Thank you for your letter of September 18th. That will be fine because the 26th falls on Tuesday and as you may remember Tuesdays are lucky days for me. Maybe we should have tried Tuesday for our last reading.

I will take another day or two preparing my questions and will then send them along to you. Later on I will let you know just where I will be at the appointed time, when I know for sure.

Dear Mr. Cayce

I hope it will not inconvenience you to any great extent but I am going to ask you to postpone my reading until some indefinite time in the future. I find that, in my opinion, I should spend more time in preparing questions which I would want to submit. Also there appears to be one or two possible developments on which I may need advice later and I would like to wait a little to see how they develop.

I want you to know that I appreciate your kindness in being willing to undertake this reading for me. If I may I would like to call on you again at a later date.

R11. 10/18/39 Julia Chandler’s ltr. to HLC:

Dear Hugh Lynn:-

I had dinner with O’Neill John J. O’Neill [See his talk at A.R.E. Congress 6/17/39 on EC work], Science Editor, N.Y. Herald Tribune] the day after your letter came, and milched him for ideas re case histories.

He says to tell you case histories should have statements of as many doctors as are connected with same re their failure to perform a cure; statements from the same doctors that they had seen the treatment (instructed through the “Reading”) given, and the results of same. These statements should have the signature of the doctors giving them each time. Also statements from them when the treatment prescribed by the “Readings” is contrary to any known thus far in medical treatment of the medical world.

O’Neill cited the case of the Hopkinsville girl [852] cured of peritonitis by the application of poultices of crushed grapes. He says you should have statements as per above outline, and in above mentioned order, from all six doctors who had treated the case unsuccessfully; their observation of the grape treatment; the results of same, and whether or not it had, to their knowledge, even been tried by the medical men.

Jack is now in Philadelphia attending some medical convention, and last week had a magnificent article on scientific discoveries that may lead to the prevention and cure of cancer. He was recently conferred some fine honorary degrees in the scientific world, and becomes more famous every day. He has promised to help me to find a way to again reach Ford. [Henry Ford - See 470-22, etc.]

I am happy you felt my suggestions of value.

Yesterday [1797] walked into my office, saying he understood I am a regional representative for the Association and available to help one understand their readings. He asked me to talk over his with him and I have given him appointment at home to-morrow evening. As Mr. [1797] through his investments for me in stocks several years ago, dropped considerable of my money I confess I had a BIT of a tussle with myself to devote any of the little time I can call my own to him. Especially as friends in the financial world tell me the stocks he bought for me were those out of which HE, - and not I - could make money, and that he acted with utter selfishness in the matter. Well, - I wouldn’t take a million for his coming to me for help yesterday because I was able to promise it without any real hesitation, and with only a bit of inner tussle which I was able to immediately wipe out. So, I feel I proved a little the statement in my Egyptian “Reading” that I have made some headway in the conquest of self during the past year, and that’s worth more than the money [1797] lost for me!

I was surprised to learn that Tom Sugrue is still there, but glad to know his improvement continues.

Am delighted your book is “coming on”, and hope I’ll soon be having that autographed copy.

Nancy Fullwood’s new book is just out, and is most vital and significant. It is called “Behold We Come”. Have you seen it?

Have heard nothing from Josephine Buchanan since her return to town, nor a word while she was at Virginia Beach!!

R12. 11/3/39 Julia Chandler’s ltr:

I gave several hours (at his request) to [1797] to go over and analyze his “Readings”. I have known him some years. In fact he handled what money I had for about three years, and did badly with it. I think he did the best he could (for himself) but his investments for me brought me considerable loss. This, however, did not make me any less eager to help him now that he sees Wall Street about to crumble about his ears. I had a long, long talk with him, and know you will be glad to know that his “Readings” have impressed him profoundly, and determined him to place character-building and service above making money. I preached him a regular sermon, but he received it in the spirit given, and has since written me a beautiful letter telling me how much I helped him.

R13. 12/18/39 Mr. [1797]‘s ltr. to EC:

NEW YORK

Dear Mr. Cayce,

[2058] has just shown me his reading. I have read it thoroughly and have found it very interesting. It should certainly help him as it is very definite and I know he is very much pleased.

Can you tell me the reason that some readings are so definite and others so indefinite? Can you suggest how I might get a more definite reading than the two I have had? I realize very well that all this is beyond your control but it occurs to me that experience may have shown one course or one approach more successful than another. I would certainly appreciate any advice or suggestions you can give me. It would certainly seem as tho there must be many ways to be useful and helpful to mankind under the present upset conditions if one only knew just where to start and where his ability could best be used. R14. 12/20/39 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [1797]:

Dear Mr. [1797]:

Thank you very much for yours of the 18th. Am very glad to know you feel Mr. [2055] is pleased with his reading and that it will be helpful to him. Wish could tell you in just a few words Mr. [1797] just why some seem to get such definite information and others are so general. Am sure you are just as sincere as Mr. [2058], suppose it is something like boys in school. Some seem to find every thing comes easy and others just have to dig for every thing they get. Know that was the case with our two boys - one just had to dig, dig to get along at all, while the other every teacher he ever had said it was a pleasure to teach him as he got every thing so easily. But we usually find the ones that have to dig and study to get what it is all about. Are able to apply that they do get much better than those to whom it comes so easily. Suppose it must be something like that with the readings, and wish knew just how to tell you to proceed to get just what you wish. But feel sure, will you persevere with that as is presented, you will make the grade even better than some one that it is handed to so easily - they do not appreciate what is done.

Am happy indeed to know that [1817] is better. Am glad to have been some small help in making his condition much more satisfactory to you and Mrs. […] and possibly his outlook on life and every thing much better. Glory to HIM and the Love He has shed on the children of men.

R16. 1/10/40 Mr. [1797]‘s ltr. to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce,

I am enclosing a list of questions which I hope you will be able to answer for me. I am sending them along for your to read as I would appreciate your comments and also any suggestions or advice you would care to give me on the questions themselves, on their form or the way they are presented. If you approve of them will you save for me the first Saturday available, either morning or afternoon. I would like to have the next reading at home where I can relax and where business will not be on my mind. If you approve and will set the date then I will advise you just where I will be at the appointed time and will also send you the usual check. I hope we may get some definite help and advice this time as I certainly need it. If not I will still be thankful for a great deal of help of another kind.

Mr. [2841] called me today, he wants to see me next Monday. I understand he has been in touch with you. He did not say a reading but I will learn all about it on Monday.

R17. 1/13/40 EC’s letter to Mr. [257]: “Don’t know so much about Mr. [2091] or his proposition but think from the information given Mr. [1797] and Mr. [2091] they could work together on the cooperative farm and selling or marketing proposition.”

R18. 1/16/40 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [1797]:

Dear Mr. [1797]:

Have yours of the 10th with questions for your reading. These appear to me to be very good, only there are some that may involve the information so as to appear to be contradictory unless studied rather closely or it appears that way to me. Else, it (the information) will take one line of thought and refuse to answer or consider the rest of the questions. As to which direction it will take one never knows, but we can try. But you have quite a flock of them and it may, should it undertake to answer all of them. Take more than one sitting, but again we can but try and see what will be the outcome.

Am making the appointment for the morning of Saturday the 27th as that is the first Saturday we have open. Hope that will be satisfactory - the time is 10.30 to 11.30 E.S.T.

Heard from Mr. [2841]. Wrote him and have not heard since

• just hope we can be of help if possible.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Thank you for your letter of January 16th. You know, I sent you my list of questions well in advance because I wanted any advice or suggestions you might care to give me. You’ve had alot of experience in this work and if you feel it would be wiser to change my questions or to change the form, I would be glad to do so. Please let me know what you consider wisest.

Mr. [2841] was in the office Monday and I believe you will have heard from him again by now.

Dear Mr. [1797]:

Have yours of the 18th. My suggestion was that we try and keep the questions in the directions the information takes. Should it start out on one particular line, once it has given information. Our experience is it seldom - if ever - deviates - unless it has been so general that it has left ways open for many eventualities.

So with that in mind if you understand me, we will understand it at time set Saturday morning the 27th 10.30 to 11.30 E.S.T.

R21. 1/23/40 [1797]‘s letter to EC:

New York

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Thank you for your letter and your advice. I will of course by guided by your suggestions. You have years of experience behind you and I know so little of these matters that I am very happy to have your ideas. As you can see I spent considerable time and effort on the questions I sent you but you can see the information I want and I know you’ll do your best to get it for me. How to do it you know best. I need the information more than I can say, not just for materialistic purposes, indeed this consideration has been my last one. Knowing you and some others interested in your work has changed many of my ideas. More than that I question more and more the usefulness of my present work. There is of course a chance I am wrong in this but you can see how anxious I am to get, in some manner, information which will answer these questions in my mind which I have tried to set down on paper. I also feel there may be something important for me to do, who knows, however it’s now up to you, I leave it all in your hands.

On Saturday morning, January 27th, at the time set I will be in our house at …, Mass. You have the exact location which I sent you at the time of [1817]‘s readings. I will be in my bed-room where I hope to be able to relax. Enclosed is check for twenty dollars which I believe is the correct amount.

I want to thank you for your many kindnesses, particularly your thoughtfulness in this matter. Best wishes to you and yours.
