R2. 8/20/35 David Levy’s letter to EC: “Just stopped in at the above address to write you so therefore the old stationary.
“I was in receipt of your pamphlet on Pyorrhea the other day and I not doing anything at the present time became interested.
“I immediately took the matter up with a dentist friend of mine who is on the research board for all matters that come up pertaining to teeth. He immediately said the thing (Ipsab) was a fake and by the way I would not send out any of your pamphlets as they are not worded correctly - that is what this doctor friend of mine said. [See 1800-21 Reports.]
“After quite some discussion he said he would be glad to put (Ipsab) through a test for me and if it had any merit he would have the board recommend it to the world.
“I would appreciate it very much if you would send me a few bottles so that I can turn them over to him for the test.
“Don’t forget to let me know just what it contains. “Now Edgar I would like to know who the Home Remedies are and who are the people behind it, also just what have they done so far. If I can get a favorable reply on the (Ipsab) also the (Tim) I think that I may be able to promote a real business from it.
“Of course I would not alter it or do anything without getting some reading on the matter first.
“However don’t fail to send me at once a few bottles of Ipsab also Tim at the above address so that I can get it a day sooner.
“How are you and all the family getting on? Hope you are all well. Sonny is out in Pennsylvania on a farm and seems to like it quite well. Mrs. Levy not so good - worrying about me not doing anything for 2 years and it has had a bad effect on her.
“Now Edgar I feel at this time that there might be a chance of working a big thing of Home Remedies if these tests come out as we believe they will. How do you feel about it?
“Don’t fail to write me at once at the above address so that I can work on it immediately.
“Regards to all at Home.”
I remain your friend, David Levy
R3. 8/21/35 HLC’s ltr. to David Levy:
Mr. David Levy % Levy-Solomon 1375 Broadway New York City
Dear Mr. Levy:
Dad turned your letter of August 20, over to me. He is writing you today or tomorrow. I have been working on the Ipsab and other specifics given in readings for some time. There is every evidence that there is a real future in the proper handling of them.
The Health Home Remedies Co., Box 103, Virginia Beach, Va., is at the present time only a name with a box number. I have materials on hand for making up, bottling, labeling and placing in cartons 1,000 bottles of Ipsab. Two drug stores in Norfolk are carrying Ipsab and three individuals have recently started working on a house to house canvas on 50% commission basis. They are learning a good deal about pyorrhea though their sales have been slow - 15 bottles in the first two weeks. Every dentist in Norfolk has been advised that they may secure samples of Ipsab for testing purposes. So far only two of them have taken advantage of this offer and have not been using it long enough to check results. About fifty bottles have been sold to members of the Association during the past year and some favorable reports are coming in on the results.
The formula has been improved since you considered this proposition some years ago. Temperatures, densities and quantities are very important. The readings suggested the placing of the formula on the label and have indicated that chemical analysis would not reveal the various proportions in the preparation.
I am mailing you under separate cover two bottles of Ipsab and a jar of Tim for Hemorrhoids. Be sure that the following directions are followed carefully in the use of each:
IPSAB - Saturate tuft of cotton with Ipsab and massage thoroughly into the gum about the teeth infected. Rinse mouth with water. Application should be made at least once each day.
TIM - Use as ointment twice each day and after each application - rest for ten to fifteen minutes with feet elevated above the level of the head.
I hope your friend will give the Ipsab a thorough test. Where it has been used as directed individuals have gotten results. This preparation is not a cure-all, but I am convinced that it will cure and prevent pyorrhea. You will find, Mr. Levy, that dentists differ as to the causes of pyorrhea. I have talked with some who were supposed to be specialists on it and they thoroughly disagree. If you are able to get more than one to test it I will be glad to furnish whatever amount of Ipsab you need. I am inclosing some report blanks that will indicate the time necessary for using the preparation. I will appreciate it very much if you will advise me as to just what your dentist friend considered wrong in the pamphlet.
The first thing to do is to convince yourself of the value of the products, especially Ipsab. Then we can go into the details of handling them.
Naturally, even if the products are good the advertising is going to be the main issue. The readings have indicated that intensive local advertising, if necessary in conjunction with the house to house teams to start with (as this is inexpensive) will gradually enable us to build up a real business. It is my intention to push one product at a tim while getting reports on others. We have several specifics. I am handling the Appliances and Animated Ash under the H.H.R. Co. This company need not remain the distributor for any one remedy. It will remain the manufacturing agent for them all. I intend to incorporate as quickly as possible.
I will certainly appreciate anything you are able to do in this matter. First the test to convince yourself. Then it would be well for us to sit down and go over all the possible ways of handling the proposition and select the best one. As you have already observed and as I expect your friend has confirmed - if we have what we think we have it is one of the greatest discoveries of the century. Pyorrhea is a serious disease. This Ipsab has caused a lot of trouble in the past. I want to move slowly but steadily forward. Your advice and help will be most welcome.
With love to Mrs. Levy, Sonny and yourself,
Sincerely, Hugh Lynn Cayce
R4. 8/22/35 EC’s ltr. to David Levy:
Dear Mr. Levy:-
Was glad to have yours of the 20th, when I had finished reading your letter gave it to Hugh Lynn and told him to write you right away, and guess he has, after the last time we had that flare about Ipsab with Preston [A. C. Preston] when you were present, when we were supposed to have a meeting, I turned the whole thing over to Hugh Lynn.
- and told him I was through with the whole thing but would give any information that a reading might give about the Formula. But the readings have insisted for about 15 years there was a fortune to be made from the manufacturing and selling the product, for it works, where ever it is used properly but guess Hugh Lynn has told you all there is to tell about it.
Have been hoping against hope that you would get a chance to run down here this summer, we have been kept very close here, have been fairly busy all summer and several people have been in for readings, well from all over - most from N.Y. however. There were six here last weekend, three from Washington, two from N.Y. and one from Detroit. So was a busy weekend, and someone has just wired for next weekend from Washington. All have been fair as to health. Pa is not well but keeps up and going, which is a wonder to me. The rest are as well as might be expected I guess. Had wire from Sister about two weeks ago - she fell and broke her right wrist, letter from them today tho she is getting on very nicely, and has lost little or no time from her work, she is back in millinery.
Glad to know Sonny is getting on nicely, sure would love to see him as well as you and Mrs. Levy. Be sure and remember me to Sonny when you see him and give our love to Mrs. Levy.
From the tests that have been made heretofore, don’t think anything but what your man will find Ipsab good. Have letters about it everyday or so, so I hear I have one once in a while asking about it. I would like to see something done with it if it is OK and of course would not want anything done unless it will show results to those that use it.
Will be glad to know what you think, and to do anything to help if it proves worth while to those the man tests the stuff on. Let me hear again soon,
Love and best wishes… Edgar
