This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 13th day of March, 1939, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [1841], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mr. [257].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:15 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, N.Y.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions she has submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1841].
-
As we find, there are disturbing conditions through the physical forces of the body, that at times cause a great deal of aggravation to the assimilating and to the digestive forces of the body; as well as acute reactions through those activities of the mental AND the physical reactions in other portions of the system.
-
Hence there might be said to be a complication of disturbances. And as we find these arise primarily from glandular disturbances that produce those reactions in the system, as well as producing an incoordination between the superficial and the deeper circulations of the body.
-
These inclinations tend to at times produce the forming of lymph globules, - not those as yet in the form of tumors internally, either in the pelvic or the digestive areas, but those indications of plethora condition in the activities of the body.
-
Then, these are the disturbing forces as we find them with this body, causing those activities of the body, the blood supply alternating as to the pressures, as to the form or manner of the reactory forces through the system; at times producing a great deal of acidity for the bodily functionings.
-
The blood itself becomes more acid than it should, thus causing disturbances through the areas in the digestive forces, a quick palpitation a times of the heart, shortness of breath, and the indications of the dilation of the abdomen after foods are taken, - as well as a disturbance through the pelvic forces of the system, and producing a mental reaction of anxiety throughout the whole of the bodily forces themselves.
-
Things mentally become exaggerated. Conditions in relationships to others become extorted at times in their reactions to the activities of the system. The body becomes easily irritated, at times not sleeping well, - at others it feels or appears as if it were drugged, when the evening comes on - or even at times during the morning reactions of the system.
-
All of these then, as we find, are the characters of reactions from a glandular disturbance, owing to periods of activity in the whole of the glandular system when the various functionings refuse to make proper coordination one with another.
-
As we find, in making applications for this body, first there should be - as it were - the preparations for the applications to that in the system which would bring about the better conditions; and these should be applied in this way and manner:
-
Do not begin the hydrotherapy and the massage or even the warm or body-temperature douches for the pelvic organs until there has been a cleansing of the system, as it were, with at least two periods of Atomidine taken in this manner:
-
Begin with one minim in half a glass of water before the morning meal, for two days.
-
Then take two minims in the same manner for two days.
-
Then take THREE minims for two days.
-
Then leave off for five days.
-
And then begin again and take one minim for two days, two minims for two days, three minims for two days.
-
After the second round of the Atomidine taken as indicated, then begin with first a thorough sweat with a Fume Bath of Pine Oil, see? This means, of course, with the hot or dry heat, but combined with the Pine Oil Fume Bath; then a thorough massage as would be given all over the body; with PARTICULAR reference to the abdominal area, but close to the diaphragm; and corrections in the area of the upper dorsal portions of the body.
-
Have such a Fume Bath each week for a period of at least six or eight weeks; using the Pine Oil Fumes, with a full massage, with the corrections through those areas indicated.
-
DO NOT GIVE THIS BODY ANY ELECTRICAL vibratory treatments, nor electrical treatments of any nature! but give the treatments as indicated, through such as Reilly Service or the like.
-
After the first Fume Bath, begin taking - by self - the warm or body-temperature Atomidine douches; in the proportions of the teaspoonful commercial strength Atomidine to the quart and a half of water - used in a Fountain Syringe as a douche; for the pelvic organs, to relieve the tension and making for the better activities through the system.
-
In the matter of the diet, keep away from fried foods. Do not take too much white bread or white potatoes at any time. Use at least one meal, or the greater portion of same each day, of raw green vegetables. These may be a combination as in a raw salad, but should be the principle part of one meal each day.
-
No red meats at any time. Principally, of the meats, if these are taken, have fish, fowl and lamb; and these, as indicated, never fried.
-
These should be the principal part, but not all of the diet.
-
Do these, and we will find we will bring the better and near to normal forces for this body of [1841].
-
If these are adhered to, there will be no need of the operative measures being considered for the correction of this tendency for accumulations through the system; for these would cleanse same and call for or produce the proper activities for the creating of a normal balance.
-
To be sure, keep the bodily forces or the eliminations from bodily forces active.
-
If it is necessary, or if there is the forming of gas upon the stomach or the abdomen, have a high colonic irrigation at the time one or two of the hydrotherapy treatments are given.
-
Do these and we will find the better forces for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What exercise will be safe for me? (A) That not too strenuous, - that is, not bending too much toward the floor or ground.
-
(Q) What will quiet me mentally? (A) To remove the tensions through the bodily forces and this FIRE as it were in the glandular forces of the system.
Hence those things indicated, - all of these have been taken into consideration with the suggestions made. But do these IN the order and IN the manner indicated!
- (Q) What do you call this peculiar condition with which I am affected? (A) As has been given, GLANDULAR disturbance.
Do these things as we have given.
- We are through for the present.

R1. 4/5/39 [1841]‘s letter to EC:
…, N.Y.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I received my reading of March 13th, and have followed the directions so far in every detail. I have also had one treatment of Dr. Reilly.
I have felt VERY much better - especially mentally.
In your directions you say to take the atomidine - also douches with it in - but there is no mention how long or how often.
Will [you] please tell me whether I should take the atomidine again and how long shall I take it?
When & how long shall I take the douches? I will be glad to report to you how I feel after I have finished the treatments with Dr. Reilly.
Sincerely, [1841]
R2. 4/7/39 EC’s letter to [1841]:
Dear Mrs. [1841]:
Have yours of the 5th - thank you - glad you are feeling some better, the mental attitude of course must come first - and is a most excellent sign.
My understanding from the reading Mrs. [1841] - that you take the Atomidine for several periods - and particularly before the fume bath as you take at Dr. Reilly’s - this would be kept up until you are feeling lots better - you take it for few days and leave it off for a few days.
The douches - the same manner only these unless you are very uncomfortable would take about once a week - or such a matter
- and when ever needed to relieve the general distress.
Think you can be governed by the way you feel.
Thank you and sincerely hoping to have been of a real service
Sincerely, [signed] Edgar Cayce
R3. 5/18/39 Husband’s letter to EC:

R11. 6/20/41 Talk given by H. J. Reilly at Tenth Annual Congress of the Ass’n:
1841-1: “Another case which was very interesting was that of a woman who had been advised by a surgeon to have a major operation and to have it immediately. A friend persuaded Mrs. Y. to try a Cayce reading before the operation. All this was done in a hurry as you can well imagine. The reading gave a little picture of the situation as far as the patient was concerned. If you will bear with me a moment I will give you the exact wording of that part of the reading that pertained to my work: Quote: [etc., etc.]
“The patient was quite sick and a bit frightened. It seemed rather incredible that the simple treatments suggested in the Cayce reading would enable the patient to avoid a serious operation. Now, you know it takes tremendous courage for a person to try new and and in a good many cases, unorthodox methods of treatment. Now I have seen similar cases of this kind respond to the type of treatment that was suggested in the reading but I don’t think this lady had ever heard of it or would have tried it unless it was brought to her attention in the manner of a Cayce reading. I doubt if this lady had ever before seen or known of the various forms of hydrotherapy and physiotherapy that had been suggested for her use. As the reading indicated, she was told to come in three times a week for four weeks. After the first week she felt much better and I am happy to say that at the end of twelve treatments the case was completed and the patient was in normal condition. That was in April 1939 and from last reports there has been no recurrence of symptoms and the lady is doing quite well.”
R12. 8/31/60 Daughter Miss [1934]‘s letter (see under 1934-1 Reports) tells of mother, now 74 years of age, being almost blind and somewhat deaf, wearing a hearing aid.
“We have tried everything for Mother in the way of medical care - but no help, so far. How many times we have wished Edgar Cayce were alive and could help us.”
R13. 4/12/68 Daughter [1934]‘s letter: “My poor mother fell (she is blind now) in January - has a compressed vertebral fracture and is wearing a brace. She has been in a nursing home in … for 2 and 1/2 months. But she will be coming home soon, I think. She is very brave with all of her trouble. I don’t know whether or not Mr. [257] told you that Dad passed away a year ago last July, after falling and fracturing his hip. He never recovered.”

B1. 3/3/39 [1841]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I have heard some very nice things about you and I am very anxious to have a Reading from you. The doctors tell me I should go to the hospital but Mr. […] tells me that I should get a physical Reading from you and that is what I want to do.
Will you be good enough to give me a physical & mental diagnosis as early as you possibly can. Please send me an application blank [handwritten: “We found one”] at once and also inform me what day and what time the Reading will be given. My home address is …, N.Y. The mornings would be a better time for me and I understand the time will be from 10:30 to 11:30. You may use this letter as my application if it is agreeable to you if it will bring the Reading in quicker as I must get the Reading very quickly.
What I want is a complete physical & mental diagnosis as to what causes the conditions which are generally wrong with me and whether I need an operation of any kind. If you don’t mind, I wish you would ask the following questions after giving me a complete diagnosis:
- What do you call this peculiar condition with which I am affected.
- What caused the condition originally.
- Do I need an operation.
- If so, what doctor is recommended as my surgeon.
- If operation is recommended then when it should it be and where should it be.
- What present diet should I take and what exercise will be safe for me.
- What will quiet me mentally.
Frankly, I hope I do not need an operation but am only anticipating these questions as I must reach a decision before very long or know from you what to do. You can depend upon my following whatever information you suggest.
We live at … and when you come to New York I hope that we will have the privilege of coming over to meet you at the Kahn’s.
With kindest personal regards, I am
Sincerely, [1841]
