-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions which may be submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes.
-
Now as we find, there is near to what might well be called a nervous breakdown here, - but of a type or nature where activities of organs are involved.
-
These arise, however, from those deflections which exist in the cerebrospinal system. While the correction of these conditions will aid, there will be the requirements of other applications along with same of some medical nature also, as we find.
-
(See, there’s some excitement in this neighborhood.)
-
In giving those disturbances, the causes of same are as these, as we find with this body, [1898] we are speaking of:
-
In the blood supply there has been such a deflection of energies towards the eliminations, as exercised through the activities of the liver and the hepatic circulation, until there is such a irregularity with the circulatory center, or through the heart’s activity, that it has produced a condition bordering on that of a digitans, or agitans; that is, a palsied effect through the system.
-
These in their activity have caused a great deal of anxiety through the mental influences or forces of the body, and the body has lost some weight.
-
These deflections upset the assimilating system, of course, and cause - through the activities - the dull, heavy feelings that come to the body, the inability of proper assimilating of foods, so much anxiety as of a little bit of disturbance through the nausea, the inactivity of or the improper eliminations through the kidneys.
-
All of these are working hardships upon the system itself.
-
As we find, there are specific deflections through those areas from the 3rd and 4th dorsal to the 9th dorsal, as well as through the lumbar axis. All of this tends to make for a great strain upon the nervous system of the body, especially the coordination between the sympathetic and the cerebrospinal, as would work through the centers in the lumbar axis or the brush end of the cerebrospinal, and those through the 9th dorsal and through the brachial center, or the first of the centers to the vegetative nerve system in the areas of the first cervicals.
-
The correction of all of these, as we have indicated, will materially aid; though the inclinations for temperature, through those poisons in the system, will necessitate that there be such activities in the eliminations through the system as would be produced through the taking of properties for a better digestive force through the system, as well as to enable the liver, the kidneys and the spleen to become more active.
-
As we find, then, - but, of course, under the supervision of a medical physician, - these are the properties that would be the better for this body, combined in this manner:
-
Make three capsules, EACH containing the following ingredients:
Podophyllin…1/4 grain, Leptandrin…1 grain, Sanguinaria…1 grain, Dovers’ Powders…1 grain.
Take one of the capsules each day for three days. This should be sufficient. As we find, these should be given with PLENTY of water being taken at the time. Take one capsule each evening for three days.
-
Following the taking of these, even after these properties have acted upon the system, there should be a thorough cleansing of the alimentary canal with high enemas, so that the effects of these properties may be removed; for the Leptandrin and Sanguinaria, as well as the Podophyllin, will act upon the gastric flows through the liver. While some of these are severe, their reaction should not be so if combined with the others in the proportions as indicated.
-
During the period that these properties are being taken, there should be practically a liquid or semi-liquid diet for the body.
-
In the general diet we would include Jerusalem artichoke at least three times each week, WITH the other foods, - for the activities of the properties in same will act with the pancreas and supply to the circulatory system sufficient of those properties to stimulate a better activity for the body.
-
Best not to undertake to tax system by overactivity or work during the three or four days that the medicinal properties are being taken.
-
After the system has been cleansed by the taking of the properties indicated, then the general osteopathic applications should tend to STRENGTHEN the body materially, so that it may resume its activities.
-
IF there is the tendency then for the continued weakness, it would be well for the low vibratory forces of the Diathermy to be used, - this to be only as heat to the body and not as a reaction to the system itself.
-
Of late afternoons when first returning home, we find that red wine as a food - not as a drink - would be very strengthening, and well for the body. This would be taken only with black or brown bread; about two ounces each afternoon - about thirty minutes to an hour or so before the evening meal - would be materially aiding to the body. This should not be begun, though, until three or four days after the cleansing of the system is accomplished.
-
Do these, if we would bring the better forces for this body, [1898].
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through for the present.

(See separate notation [which was enclosed] for druggist in preparing the capsules. If you wish us to have our local druggist send these to you - that is, if you have trouble getting them from YOUR druggist - let us know and we will have them mailed to you immediately. It is better to have four or five such capsules prepared, in case you drop or lose one, - but only take the three as indicated. See extra sheet [which was enclosed] to be given to the Osteopath when you are ready for these treatments. We would refer you to Dr. Frank Dobbins, 551 Fifth Ave., New York City. At your convenience, please send us a history of your case to the time of the Reading.)

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 7/1/39 [1898]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Since my reading of May 28 I have followed out the suggestions given me for treatment of my case and I am happy to say that my condition is much improved. At the time I wrote you originally I had just returned from a trip south which was made in an effort to get straightened out from a condition bordering on nervous breakdown. I was away three weeks but the vacation seemed to do me but very little good. I was so nervous and high strung that it was necessary for me to keep dosed up on phenobarbital tablets or something of similar nature in order to carry on with my work. But for such sedatives I was not able to sleep at night. Along with the nervous condition I was bothered with some nausea of the stomach, enough so to make me feel uncomfortable most of the time. I had reached the point where I couldn’t do my work at the office satisfactorily and was very much discouraged about my condition.
It’s just about a year ago that I started going down hill and at that time our family physician put me on a gastric ulcer diet. It seemed to do me some good for a while but in a few months I was just in about as bad shape as I was previously. A few months ago I went to a stomach specialist. He told me he thought my trouble was due to worry and too little relaxation but suggested that I have some X-rays made of my stomach, gall bladder, intestines, etc. The x-rays indicated no ulcers but the doctor did tell me that they showed stones in my gall bladder. He advised operation for this although he wasn’t inclined to believe the gall stone responsible for stomach trouble and general nervous condition. He advised my getting away for a rest which I did not as I mentioned previously it seems to do me but very little good. It was about this time that Mrs. [1841] told me how much you had helped her and suggested that I communicate with you.
As indicated above I have felt much better since taking the treatment you recommended for my case. The osteopathic treatment given me by Dr. Dobbins whom you recommended has been particularly helpful. I still have to be somewhat careful with my diet but I am almost completely recovered from the nervous condition. I haven’t taken any phenobarbital for a month and haven’t felt the need of any. I am able to carry on with my work now without getting tired out and done up, have a good appetite and am able to sleep well at night. I feel that your diagnosis of my case was absolutely correct and that the treatment recommended is just what I needed. Later on I may want you to give me a check reading.
You have helped me so Mr. Cayce that I want very much to have you give my wife [1955] a reading. She hasn’t been at all well for the past year. Suffering from headaches, pain in her back, and general fatigue and I believe with God’s help that you can be of same assistance to her that you have to me. I am filling out an application blank for her, which I am enclosing and I hope that you may be able to give her an early appointment for reading. [See 1955-1.]
I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to you for the help you have given me. It was mighty good of you to give me a reading on Sunday which is usually your day for rest and I just want to let you know that I appreciate it very much. I can’t thank you enough.
Gratefully yours, [1898]
R2. 6/10/39 [1898]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Thank you very much for your letter of July 5th. You can be sure that I’ll continue to keep close to the suggestions you gave me for treatment until such time as I have fully regained my strength and health. I haven’t felt it necessary to take the Diathermy treatments but I expect to get in to see Dr. Dobbins about twice a month, not breaking away from the Osteopathic applications too sharply. For a while I went to him twice a week. His treatments have helped my nervous condition immeasurably - of course however you are the man I have to thank for the diagnosis and recommended treatment - you and the Divine Father who has seen fit to endow you with supernatural powers.
R3. He referred his friend for a Physical Rdg. for his daughter - see 1975-1.
R4. 3/23/40 He wired for a Check Physical Reading appointment and submitted these questions by mail:
- Is it necessary for me to continue to take osteopathic treatments once or twice a week, in order to carry on my work, or is there any other or supplementary treatment that I might take to help correct my present bodily condition?
- Please recommend treatment for my present condition.
- What causes poor digestion of food and continued gas on stomach? Is it due to gall stones or other gall bladder trouble?
- What diet do you recommend for me?
- What causes uncomfortableness at times in right testicle? Is there any trouble there that might be responsible for my not feeling well?
- Is my continued ill health due to any organic trouble?
- What is reason for my waking up in the night and being unable to sleep for hours at a time? What sedative, if any, would you recommend?
- What kind of exercise do you recommend for me?
- Should I continue to take wine before my evening meal?
- Would you recommend that I give up my present work? Have you any suggestions for other work for which I might be better fitted?
