GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces, giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions which may be submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: (In going back over years from present - ” - ‘20 - very interesting life experience - ‘19 - ‘18 - ” etc., on back to birth date.)
-
Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as [1847].
-
In giving the interpretations of the records here, as we find there are many influences that have borne and do bear upon the emotions and the activities of this entity, - as symbols.
-
And the fleur-de-lis’ should be an emblem about the entity at all times.
-
Colors have a great deal of influence. Hence gray, mauve and delicate shades of colors bring harmonious emotions and should be a part of the entity’s apparel at all times.
-
Pearls and diamonds are the stones that bring the vibratory reactions and the experiences in the environs of the entity.
-
Hence we find, - but irrespective of what the entity has done about same, -
-
One very sensitive and intuitive in its inner self; one capable of psychometrizing most anything by the very emotions that vibrations bring to the entity.
-
And with the abilities of the entity to express or to put into words the emotions, writing of such things should be a part of the entity’s experience.
-
This would give an outlet for the entity to much of that which is innately and manifestedly a part of the emotions of the entity.
-
And these might bring, through the very experiences of the entity, helpful forces and influences in the experiences of others.
-
Then, as the purpose of each soul’s entrance into a material plane is to leave the environs in such a manner that others may be aided in their search for those influences that bring creative energies to be a portion of the manifested activity, these would be those forces to which expression should be given by the entity in the present.
-
In choosing the activities in the entity’s experience or sojourn, or the interpretation of the records here, - these, of course, are chosen with the desire that the experience be a helpful one.
-
Hence, though the faults as well as the virtues may be indicated, these are given that the entity may apply self in such a manner as to become a better, a greater channel for aid and help and hope in the experiences of others.
-
As we find, as indicated by those of the period, - while astrological aspects are not as ordinarily indicated by the manner the entity has applied self in the present experience to the mental and material environs, - these show indications, as from the sojourn of the entity in those environs which are accredited with such influences. For as one thinketh in the heart, so do such influences become active in the entity’s experience.
-
In Venus, - the beauty, the delicate activities, and the inclinations for the entity to always hold something as it were in reserve in itself, that it doesn’t give expression to, to all. There may be glimpses here and there. Hence EVERYONE will find the entity an INTERESTING individual with whom to converse.
-
For the depths of the entity’s mental self, - as in Mercury AND Venus, - are never given as a full expression of itself.
-
Hence as a mystery is to the mental self, so an individual with that temperament or tendency remains as an interesting individual to others.
-
In Jupiter, - the abilities to influence or direct in the activities of self the actions of others; and these must be, or should be, as indicated, a part of the entity’s experience or activity in the present sojourn.
-
The Uranian influence makes for the interest in the occult, or the scientific, or the mysterious. And by its very expression the entity often leaves a wonderment, in conversation with another, as to how much or how little or what application the entity makes of this knowledge respecting itself; but judged by all as using many influences or forces not fully expressed in awareness to others.
-
As to the appearances in the earth, then, - these we find quite at variance to the present activities, - according to the varied environs that are indicated.
-
Before this we find the entity was in the land now known as the French, during those periods when there was the formation or the determination being made as to those influences which would be impelling forces for the activities of the groups and the masses.
-
There we find the entity was closely associated with those who were determining factors in not only the political life but the nationalism of the country itself.
-
Thus, as indicated in the emblems, these come to mean much in the experience of the entity.
-
The entity was a lecturer, as would be termed in the present, or a staunch advocate of the nationalist movements for the greater mass or numbers of peoples during the experience, - in the name Charlean Heltzlett.
-
In the experience the entity gained, for - though in the opposite sex from that of the present - it made for those activities in which there came many of those determining factors in the governmental and in the ruling influences.
-
Hence all things pertaining to that land are INNATELY a part of the entity.
-
And the arousing of the emotions comes through the very influences and forces as experienced and manifested during that particular experience.
-
Before that we find the entity was in the Indo-China land, and of the original activities that arose from the descendants from Mu and Saneid, - for these were a part of the entity’s experience.
-
While the entity enjoyed the positions in the activities of the city which has become as naught, we find that the entity also gave of itself in verse and song, and in those activities in directions which would strengthen not only its own peoples but make defenses for the peoples of that particular land.
-
The name then was Fuchoiu.
-
In the present experience, things pertaining to the oriental MIND become of special interest to the entity; as also especially the intricate work as carvings, filagree, and activities of such a nature that were a part of the entity’s experience through that sojourn. Things overlaid with gold or ivory or coral, things of that nature become a part of the entity’s experience, - these are innate or manifested by a great influence.
-
Hence the abilities of the entity in the present to attain or maintain close relationship to vibratory influences and forces, whether they emanate from the mineral, the animal, or the vegetable kingdoms. All of these become innately as portions of the entity’s experience.
-
Before that we find the entity was in the Persian land, during those periods when the ‘city in the hills and the plains’ was active in bringing to the consciousness of many of the people during that period the realization of the brotherhood of man.
-
These were activities in which the entity came from the Indian lands but sojourned in the ‘city in the hills and the plains.’
-
Thus the entity became a healer through those experiences, and through those activities; giving much of self in the raising and the interpreting of the temperament and the activities of the varied groups that journeyed hither and thither through the periods of sojourn there.
-
The name then was Amaomi. In the experience the entity gained, for its activities were for others rather than for self.
-
Before that we find the entity was in the Egyptian land, during the periods when there were the reconstructions with the activities of the Atlanteans and the returned Priest and the Natives who had become as a part of the great purpose for the dissemination of those truths or tenets.
-
There we find the entity acted rather in the capacity of what would be called in the present a historian; keeping the records of the activities not only of the Priest but of the laymen as well as the politicians or rulers in that particular land.
-
The name then was Tamoi.
-
As to the experience in the present and the application of self, as to the abilities and the meeting of self in the influences as may be wrought:
-
Study first to show thyself approved unto that thou hast set as thine ideal. Know these are found in man’s attempt to seek the closer relationship with the Creative Forces or the sources of his material sojourn; and that only in the applying of same in the MATERIAL things, as in relation one to another, may these become a part of the experience of all.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What have been my relationships in the past with [1522] and what are the mutual urges to be met? (A) The aids to one another, through the activities in the Persian land, when we find there were the closer relationships in the attempts of each to aid others in their better interpreting of spiritual truths in their relationships to others; in body, in mind, in spirit.
Hence in the present, those aids and the strength that may be given each other become a part of the experience.
-
(Q) With my friend, Edith Ives? (A) This as we find may be better found in a paralleling, - but these relationships were through those periods in what is now called the Indo-China land.
-
(Q) Dr. Allis Hascall? (A) This in the same way and manner, and in the same experience.
-
(Q) Maybell Smith? (A) We do not find an association in the material plane, save in the present.
-
We are through for the present.

New York, N.Y.
Mr. Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce,
It is my plan to drive southward as soon as this blanket of snow permits. I hope to go to Virginia Beach in passing, for the sake of consulting you about the life reading that I obtained from you.
As I drive alone not very fast, it will be two or three days before I can reach there, and so I cannot ask for a specific appointment. I do not know where to look for you, but I believe that the Association met at the Warner hotel, so I will ask there for you. If I cannot find you, and you cannot see me, I shall drive on at once, as my trip has already been delayed by unexpected events. I am not sure of staying at the Warner Hotel, but perhaps you would address a note to me there, telling me where to look for you.
Very truly yours, [1847]
R2. 1/10/40 EC’s letter to [1847]:
Dear Miss [1847]
As the weather has been and still is so severe am taking chance that you haven’t left N.Y. as yet.
Will be very glad to see you, and try and help if possible to make your reading more worthwhile. The Warner is not open this time of year. But the Pinewood, or Pocahontas is open, and will find either very comfortable. We live on 14th St.
- just opposite the Catholic Church. Any one am sure can direct you to our place.
Will be glad to see you at any time - our periods of work are
- 10.30 to 11.30 of morning and 3.30 to 4.30 in afternoon so any time of day but those will be most convenient for me.
Hoping you have a most pleasant journey and that we may be of a service - think you will find the Coastal route the better this season of the year, and that makes it easy to come through Va Beach and not out of your way at all.
Hoping to see you then
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce [GD’s note: I do not remember that she ever arrived.]
R3. 8/12/46 Mary Ann Woodward’s letter to [1847]:
Miss [1847] New York City, N.Y.
Dear Miss [1847]
The Association for Research & Enlightenment is compiling the information given in the readings relating to stones and gems for Mr. Green [Stephen N. Green], a gem collector, who is sponsoring this study. We would like to make as complete a report as possible so are asking you to bring us up to date on your case.
Your reading says: “Pearls and diamonds are the stones that bring the vibratory reactions and the experiences in the environs of the entity.” It also says you are very sensitive and are capable of psychometrizing most anything. Will you therefore tell us what effects or experiences you have had from these gems?
We will appreciate as exact and detailed information as you can give us. Have you worn either of these stones before or since the reading? Do you feel a beneficial effect: either mentally, physically or spiritually? Does the effect seem stabilizing or appear to help your general feeling of well-being? Any details describing your experience or vibratory reactions will be interesting and helpful. Will you tell us how long you have worn either of these gems or when you wear them? Is the effect immediate or within what length of time do you note an effect? Does the effect seem to develop or progress? Do you feel any particular magnetizing effect? If you can add any other details or effects or relate any special experiences we will be very grateful.
As you know the names of individuals do not appear on information sent out from the Association. Names are still held strictly confidential, only excerpts from the readings are used. We are therefore asking you now whether you would object to Mr. Green having your name for any future correspondence on the subject?
Since the time we can devote to this study is very limited, will you be good enough to send us a prompt reply? Please accept our thanks now for this information? You will probably see the results of this study in a future bulletin.
Very truly yours, Mary Ann Woodward
R4. 8/17/46 [1847]‘s letter to Miss Mary Ann Woodward:
Miss [1847] Counsellor At Law [?!! [the ? and !! are mine. GD.]] New York, N.Y.
Miss Mary Ann Woodward, Association for Research and Enlightenment, Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Dear Miss Woodward,
I am sorry you wrote me your letter of August 19th, for if I answer it truthfully, as I must, you are going to get hurt.
I have considerable curiosity as to the workings of the human mind, and when I found that my friends were interested in Mr. Edgar Cayce, I sent to him for a “life reading”, and it seemed to me an inextricable confusion of the intuitional and the delusional. Wondering what sort of man he really was, I looked him up on the occasion of a trip south, and was convinced that he wrote in complete good faith. But the honesty with which one may hold a belief is no proof whatever that the belief is true in fact.
I believe it was at that time that Mr. Cayce’s son said to me that I must have the power of psychometrizing objects, and I merely listened without disputing his words. In point of fact, I never had any such power in any way, shape or manner. As far as I am concerned, what you write about vibrations is merely gibberish. It happens that I like white stones, but I definitely prefer opals to pearls. There is, of course, a satisfaction to be had from wearing objects whose possession confers social prestige, but as one matures, one classes this satisfaction as rather juvenile, and wastes very little emotion on it. I happen to be sentimentally fond of some rings I have owned for nearly fifty years, but if I were now offered the same amount of money that they cost, I should spend it in very different ways.
As you see, my name will not be of any possible use to you in your future studies.
Sincerely yours, [1847]
R5. 8/20/46 Mary Ann Woodward’s letter to [1847]:
Miss [1847] New York City, N.Y.
Dear Miss [1847]
Thank you for your letter in answer to mine. I am really grateful that you troubled to answer it and am also glad you were perfectly frank about it. If you were not you would not be true to yourself.
Let me assure you that you did not in the least hurt my feelings. Nor do I condemn a natural curiosity. I too have much curiosity and perhaps that was partly the original cause of my interest in psychic things. I feel too that there is always the possibility that those who come to scoff may stay to praise. At least the person may gain some bits of truth which will help later if not then.
Far be it from me to preach in any way and I am speaking now for myself and not for the Association, I feel that you are and must be a very sensitive person of very fine character but that legal training has emphasized the mind to the extent that it has kept you from recognizing your intuitive self. Moreover, all our education is against such things and your type of education in particular would discourage any recognition of psychic things. I have been told though that the Scottish courts and perhaps the English have had to recognize the fact (in a legal sense) that haunted houses exist. We may eventually in this country do likewise.
Personally, I do not doubt that you have this ability and I believe that if you do not develop it in this life, you will in your next, when the world is more advanced and trains rather than crushes the psychic in people.
Again allow me to thank you for your very frank answer.
Very truly yours, Mary Ann Woodward
P.S. May I suggest that it might interest you to carry your curiosity a little further and try to psychometrize objects. If you would care to discuss either this or your life reading with me, my home address is, 170 Irvington Ave., South Orange, New Jersey. I will be there after Sept. 1, and could easily arrange to see you in the City.
R6. 1/26/50 Report by Miss Helen M. Wenzel, worker on the Edgar Cayce Foundation campaign:
Visited Miss [1847] at home 1/23/50. Had impression she is living on “interest.” Has so many activities - Museums, Alumni Assn., N.Y. Forum etc. to support hasn’t had much time to look into Assn. work.
Interested in Mental Hygiene, Psychiatry, etc. Apartment filled with hundreds of newspapers to be clipped. Was sick last Summer and they piled up. Suggested that if she had any clippings re Psychic phenomena, etc., Assn would be glad to have them. Says she keeps ‘em - puts them in a box. That’s all.
Asked whether she had made use of her reading (life) said no
- in some respects it had been a close analysis of her, in others, not.
R7. 4/60 Routine mailing of N.Y. lecture notice was returned marked DECEASED.

B2. 3/19/39 [1847]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:-
I have held over your letter of March 19th [13th], to consider what interests I might name in my reply.
Perhaps as the predominant interest in my life I might name the Church of the Healing Christ, which I have attended regularly for over two years. Dr. Emmet Fox organizes and integrates into a philosophy all the bits of truth by which I have been living for years, as well as adding more!
As the philanthropy to which I am devoting my energy I should name the Body and Mind Clinic [Founded by Edward Spencer Cowles, M.D. (psychiatrist). Miss [1522] was his nurse. Dr. Henry S. W. Hardwicke and other doctors were associates. See Sept-Oct 1937 COSMOPOLITAN articles by Dorothy Giles about the “Soul Clinics.” Also see Dr. Edward Spencer Cowles article, DOCTORS DON’T KNOW, as told to Earl Reeves, in August 27, 1938 LIBERTY Magazine.]. At that I met Miss [1522] whose name was on my application, and when she remarked that all healing was spiritual, I knew I was in a place where I could happily cooperate.
In regard to personal friends, with whom I am not associated in any common work, I might name Mr. Edith Ives, Dr. Allis Hascall, and Mrs. Maybell Smith. You may recall that Emerson remarks that the soul puts forth friends as a tree puts forth shoots, and in the course of my life I have had a good many from whom I have been separated by death, (outer events), or differences in our own developments, and it seems futile to investigate relationships no longer vital.
I will venture one question that seems wholly fanciful. A year ago I was watching Mars come up to a conjunction with Saturn only one degree from the 0 degree of Aries in which Saturn stood when I was born. I saw in some astrological journal that the Duke of Winsdor had his Mars in 0 Aries, so I had the curiosity to pick up his horoscope and found at least three more of his planets in conjunction with four others of mine. Now in this lifetime I have seen him, so far as I recall, just twice, both in public parades, but might I have been his subject in some earlier life? I may say I know next to nothing of astrology, and perhaps such combinations of conjunctions are common. I am not suggesting that you put much attention on it.
I will observe the time in silence next Friday morning and shall be deeply interested in the outcome.
Very truly yours,
