This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 26th day of January, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [1522], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Dr. [1210].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Born April 1, 1883, between 5:00 and 8:00 A. M., in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. Time of Reading 11:15 to 11:55 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Life Reading Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes (What a PECULIAR record!) - We have the records here of that entity now calling itself Miss [1522].
-
In giving the interpretations of the records here, that is chosen to be given which as we find if applied may build for more constructive and for greater developments in this present experience.
-
We find that the astrological influences appear from the environs of the entity during the interims between the earthly incarnations, rather than because of the POSITION of a star.
-
These become relative - as to the environ in which each of the planets or sojourns has an influence in the present.
-
Just as this brings then the innate or the mental or soul urge, so the appearances in the earth bring the urge from the latent forces of the emotions.
-
Hence we find the entity is an EMOTIONAL individual; as is indicated not only from the astrological but from the material sojourns.
-
Then we find - but irrespective of what the entity has done or may in the present do with these urges - these as latent and manifested forces in the experience:
-
One, as indicated, that is very emotional in its nature, in its relationships with others.
-
One very determined; and with the ability, physically, mentally, to carry forward most any undertaking that is prompted into the experience or becomes a manifested portion of the experience of the entity.
-
One that will find, and has experienced, that to be more optimistic gains much in making the experiences of life - or the act of living - more enjoyable, more worth while.
-
It will be found that these have been the experiences in the earth as well as through the astrological sojourns, so as to be a part of the innate BEING of this entity - called Miss [1522].
-
In the astrological aspects we find Venus the ruling influence; while a great protection arises from Jupiter, as well as from Mercury and from Saturn’s forces.
-
Hence we find from the astrological great friendships have existed and do exist in the experience of the entity; oft becoming a stronger or more of a tie than those influences of material or family relationships.
-
One who is enabled through these very abilities to make friends, and has experienced both those influences of losing them when not desiring to and not being able to get rid of some when it desired to!
-
These become then a portion of the experience of the entity to be dealt with in constructive ways and manners.
-
This then becomes the question - what IS a constructive experience?
-
Is it one wherein there is the necessity for toil or labor? or is it one wherein there is the satisfying or gratifying of the mental and spiritual body?
-
The answer is: If it is to the glorification or justification of the bodily emotions or forces ALONE, it is NOT constructive. If it is to the glory of good, of the fruits of the spirit of truth and good, it IS constructive; whether through hardships or through gratifying of what may appear to others to be only bodily forces or emotions.
-
In Jupiter we find the influences making for associations with masses or great numbers of people, but individual in the application; very VARIED character, and with Mercury the mental abilities as given to carry same forward.
-
However, under Saturn we may find many adverse conditions, and many changes ever in the offing or the making. These depend not upon that which is a force but rather an influence existent because of the way the will has been applied by the entity in the past.
-
The will of the entity is that gift of the Creator, or that portion which makes it an entity, an individual; with the ability to know itself to BE itself yet one with that desired - whether knowledge or truth or good, or bad or evil or what!
-
For there is ever set before each soul - and body and spirit - or mind, body, soul - good and evil, life and death; will being that factor, the choice, the birthright to every individual as man - or who is attained to the separations as to become so individualized - which in the application makes for developments or retardments.
-
As to the appearances of the entity in the earth:
-
While we find these not so great in numbers that influence the entity in the present, there have been many that will have an influence depending upon the variation in the APPLICATION of the entity under the varying circumstances of self.
-
For it is like this: One may be well versed in a language or a custom, but under other environs such knowledge only makes urges and is not among the APPLIED conditions in the experience.
-
Before this, then, that influences the entity in the present, we find the entity was in the land of its present sojourn during and just before the American Revolution; when there were the toils and the hardships, when those divisions arose.
-
The entity aided in the care of those that were in need in body and afflicted in activities.
-
Hence the abilities in the entity to meet varying circumstances; or to give its best self even under the most trying circumstances is an innate urge from the emotions of the body.
-
To fight - fight - fight, even when others have lost hope, is innate in the entity!
-
Hence in the present the entity will find abilities in activities that minister to the needs of others; whether in body or mind. In these may come the greater development, the greater activities of the entity.
-
As we find, if this could or would become more and more individualized - or the entity SUPERVISING such - greater might be the material as well as the mental satisfaction to the entity in such experiences.
-
Before that we find the entity was in that now known as the Holy Land; during those periods and trying times following the Crucifixion.
-
While the entity was young in years, as would be termed from today, it knew much of the application of self in the care of the household under those periods and those activities of the day when there were those who were the toilers of the land and those who were active in what would be called gardening (and not gardening then as would be termed today as “all roses,” for it was not!).
-
Yet the entity came under the influence of the teachings of the Disciples; ESPECIALLY of Stephen and Philip. This was then in the latter portion of the activities of those in the city where the entity came with the throngs, following the feast of the Pentecost.
-
In the experience the entity gained, for the entity saw the application of the tenets that were the message, that were the interpretations of the experiences that had come into the lives of those that had known and had followed closely with the man Jesus. The entity saw these applied in the ways and manners in which they become a part of the living experience of the individual - as they did during that sojourn.
-
And the more such experiences, the more such truths are a portion of the entity’s experience in the present, greater and greater may be the joy, the peace that comes to the entity in the present.
-
The name then was Sara, and it was of those peoples that came from the Galilean land.
-
Before that we find the entity was in the land now called the Persian, or a portion of India or Mesopotamia and those portions of the lands to which the chosen peoples were taken as captives - or in bondage.
-
Hence the entity was of those that were close in the household of Hezekiah [Zedekiah], the king carried into Babylon.
-
Because of the beauty, because of the abilities of the entity, it found favor among the leaders of the soldiery and thus was protected; but became - by force, not by choice - as a pawn among those leaders. Thus it was forced into activities that were abhorrent to the individual’s self in the experience.
-
Yet from the MENTAL forces the entity gained.
-
As to the activities from that sojourn, we find in the present the love of ease; the abilities to find grace or favor - many of these come from those experiences; as does the love of soft things, the delicate things close to the body - and yet the knowledge of all these imply is as an innate force in the experience.
-
The name then was Shasdacha.
-
Before that we find the entity was in the land now known as the Egyptian, when there was the distributing, when there was the preparation of those that went into other lands as ministers, as teachers, as what would be called today the missionaries.
-
The entity’s choice in activities then was in that known as the hospitalization, or the care of those that were sick or afflicted; or those studies of those things of nature’s storehouse that might be applied in individual disturbances in body or mind.
-
Hence the entity went to the land now known as or called the Grecian, and the Caucasian land.
-
The entity rose to one of power in those services and activities, but brought for itself condemnation. For the choice was in that which would bring self-indulgences to same.
-
In the experience the entity gained and lost, and gained and lost.
-
The name then was Den-ue-la.
-
As to the abilities of the entity in the present, then, and that to which it may attain, and how:
-
As to how high or how low depends upon that which is the entity’s ideal, and upon the application of same.
-
But in the ministry to others - as a nurse, as a teacher or minister - the greater good, the greater heights and satisfaction and peace and harmony may be had within self.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What type of work should I undertake now to insure me a livelihood? (A) That as we find as of PRACTICAL nursing, or the better would be preparation of a place - and the entity as supervisor of such a place where recuperations might be had, or where there might be ministrations for those who are neither sick nor well but who are upon the border of same.
-
(Q) What has been my past association to Dr. Edward Spencer Cowles [M.D.]? (A) Both King AND a brother!
In the Persian, the King. In the Egyptian activities, a brother.
-
(Q) What has been my past association with Sidney George Mills? (A) We don’t find him in the association.
-
(Q) What is my duty to Mrs. [1756]? (A) As ye would have done if conditions were reversed, do ye so - now. [See 1522-1, Par. R6.]
-
(Q) What is my duty to Agatha Stephanie Almy? (A) Keep that faith as was the prompting - is the better. For if ye would have faith, show it! If ye would have friends, be friendly!
-
(Q) Along what lines will my greatest spiritual development lie? (A) In those fields as indicated, in making practical in the experience of others the teachings of the MAN Jesus.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 1/30/38 “Just a line to acknowledge with gratitude my reading. It is most strange and interesting and will I am sure be of much help to me. Peculiar is the work and yet with so much beauty in it, and so much to live up to. I am hoping to have Miss [954] and Dr. [1210] go over it with me some day this week.”
R2. 2/1/38 EC’s letter to Miss [1522]:
Dear Miss [1522]
Glad to know you have found your reading of interest and am sure, as you study same, more and more it will be “strangely” true in your experience, but unless you can find something practical, something you can live up to, well no matter how interesting, how can it be of much value, and to be of a help what is the purpose of the whole matter.
Am sure Miss [954] and Dr. [1210] can be of great help to you with interpreting same, and when Hugh Lynn is there, in a few weeks, he will be glad to go over same with you, believe he has the right idea about such readings, as he has made quite a study of such information for several years.
Thanking you and hoping to have been of a service.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R3. 4/30/38 [1522]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce;
Mr. Hugh Lynn said the other night that the Association would appreciate comments on the Life Readings, and so I herewith give mine.
To begin with at first the Reading is so strange and different that I found it hard to evaluate, but the more I study it the more help do I receive.
To have the assurance, a growing one, that it is the Truth about ones inner self is a priceless incentive to live the Way it suggests. More and more do I realize how it fits me, how amazingly it depicts my inner urges and outer characteristics, and the assurance that I am doing the work for which I am fitted makes living a satisfying reality.
I had not realized I was such an emotional person though since my reading came I have had cause to know it, and thanks to it also and to the great help Mr. Hugh Lynn gave in going over it with me. I can humbly say I have learned to control those emotions with ever increasing confidence and understanding.
What more can I say save to again thank you and the Association for the sane inspiring direction I am receiving and to pray that this help may more and more given to those who need it.
Yours very sincerely [1522]
R4. 5/11/38 She obtained a Physical Reading. See 1522-2 Reading and interim reports.
R5. 6/19/38 Letter: “What it has meant to me since I had my first reading it is hard to say. To begin with life has grown into a prospect so vast and fascinating, I shall never tire of learning more of it. The basis of your readings is wonder enough! and the help daily given a source for gratitude.”
R6. 12/1/38 Miss [1522] obtained a Physical Reading for Mrs. [1756], “A patient I have lived with for 14 years!”
R7. 12/21/38 She referred her friend Miss [1809] for a Life Reading.
R8. 3/24/39 See 1847-1, Par. 45-A indicating close past associations with Miss [1522] in Persia.
R9. 4/13/39 “I have had such a revealing experience. I had a sitting with Mrs. Eileen Garrett and my parents came through and talked to me, likewise an old friend. They know my life and say the work should go on. It was amazing how clearly they depicted them, and they assured me they were always near to help in times of stress. What a thin door divides us, and how we should live the life here, in order to attain the highest there - a great adventure indeed and one so worth struggling for.”
R10. 4/18/39 EC’s letter: “Miss Garrett is very wonderful - had a sitting with her some years ago and she is very fine - haven’t seen her lately. Please remember me to her when you see her again.” [See 507-1 and 507-2.]
R11. 5/12/39 “Our lovely Dr. Hardwicke [Henry S. W. Hardwicke, M.D.] has been set free, and no one deserved it more than he. He lived a useful, helpful life, and many are those who have been made better through him.”
R12. 8/2/39 She referred Mr. [1974] for a Life Reading.
R13. 9/11/39 “What a difference it makes to life to know of our continuity and how to prepare for it!”
R14. 1/5/40 She requested a special reading for Miss [2081].
R15. 5/3/40 Reply to Questionnaire:
[Handwritten note] Dear Mr. Hugh Lynn, So sorry this has been delayed so long.
COMMENTS ON LIFE READING.
The Reading given by Mr. Cayce is and always will be to me a fascinating account of my previous incarnations, they give me an unmistakable clue to my present characteristics, talents, and temperament. So accurate are they that I have an understanding of myself which could not have been gathered in any other way.
It is hard to pick out the MOST interesting points, however, the information that in nearly every one of my previous lives I had worked with “those afflicted in body and mind, associations with masses of people but individual and varied in character” an amazing fact as I am a nurse at a clinic for mental and nervous disorders, and my confidence has grown because of this, though long before I had my reading I used to tell the patients when they commented on my understanding, “This comes THROUGH me, I did not learn it”.
The greatest part of all to me is the statement that I was in Jerusalem after the feast of Pentecost, met St. Stephen and Philip, and learned from them of the “man Jesus” and the more I live and recall these experiences, the greater will be “the joy, the peace”. As a child Saint Stephen used to have a special appeal, I loved to think of his face “as like that of an angel!”
The Reading has most assuredly been a source of spiritual incentive, a guide-post which checks me when I find myself apt to be lax in my duty or too easy with myself, and a powerful and neverfailing star to “hitch my wagon to”.
R16. 9/40 Miss [1522] died very suddenly. See details under 1522-2 Reports.
