This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 22nd day of April, 1939, in accordance with request made by phone through the brother - Mr. [228], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

King Memorial Time of Reading Hospital, 4:00 to 4:10 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Alabama.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions which may be submitted, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, [1868]; this we have had before. [No record of previous readings.]

3. As we find, there are the acute conditions that arise from a complication of disturbances. And these, in the present, are the effects of an accumulation of poisons arising from lack of the eliminations, - and in the present are beginning to involve the activity of the eliminations as related to kidneys - as indicated by the conditions which are acute along the upper portion of the kidney area.

4. These complications, as we find, are the effect of the unbalancing of the chemical reactions in the system; lacking in those necessary elements as of iodine for the cleansing of the glandular forces. These excesses of poisons affect - through the alimentary canal, through the nerve forces of the sympathetic system - the muscular and tendon forces of the locomotory centers, as indicated in the shoulder, arms and muscles of the back.

5. Then, these are the disturbing factors.

6. As we find, if there is the ability to get the active forces of the eliminations started, as it were, without too much upset, through the kidneys and the active forces of the liver, these conditions may be alleviated by the adding of iodine to the system in the form of the Atomidine.

7. It should be begun with small doses; two minims before the morning meal and AFTER the last meal in the evening; the next day four minims morning and evening, the next day six minims, the next day eight minims, the next day ten minims morning and evening, see?

8. Then the next day (after the ten minims taken twice the day before, you see), take as Epsom Salts Bath, - that is, in a saturated solution of Epsom Salts, - about twenty pounds of Epsom Salts to forty gallons of water, or that proportions. Of course, it will be necessary that this be given by one attending the body, you see. Remain in this for at least thirty minutes, having the water as hot as the body can stand to remain in same, and the body being massaged during the time it is in the bath, see?

9. Then after being taken out of the bath, the body should be rubbed down thoroughly and massaged with an equal combination of Olive Oil and Pine Oil, - especially along the spine and over the limbs, and especially the shoulders - to enable the body to relax.

10. After this the body should rest a few days, from the natural weakness as will be produced.

11. Then, after the third day, begin with the Atomidine again, taken in the same manner. After reaching the ten minims being taken twice a day (for the one day, you see), the next day take another Epsom Salts Bath.

12. Repeat this procedure for three periods, you see.

13. Then we may give the further instructions for corrective measures.

14. These as we find will aid in eliminating the disturbance.

15. In the present, keep away from the narcotics as much as practical. Apply rather a hot salt pack or turpentine stupes for the activity of the kidneys and for the relief of the misery or pain through those portions of the back, - as between the right kidney and the liver. This may be applied as hot as the body can stand.

16. As soon as practical begin with the other applications.

17. Do these, as we find, for the better conditions.

18. The diet should be naturally those foods that are easily assimilated, or the liquid and semi-liquid and predigested foods, - so that there may be strength gained, but not too much of any activity for the digesting of foods.

19. Ready for questions.

20. (Q) What would be suggested for eliminations through alimentary canal? (A) As indicated, those that will work with the kidneys AND the liver. Those of the Caroid derivatives are better, as we find.

21. We are through for the present.

Mighty sorry to hear [1868] is having such a time of it and sincerely hope the suggestions help out. Don’t know as it will be practical to have the suggestions carried out in the Hospital, but trust he can at least give them a try if it is plausible. Hope the acute condition is not so bad as to necessitate any drastic measures until at least had a try at the suggestion.

Know will be glad to try and help at any time and will appreciate if you will let me know how he gets along please. Trust you and yours are fine.

Haven’t been so well myself for last ten days and today is the first time have tried to work in over ten days. Over did myself guess - as just gave out - but had the heaviest week of my entire experience the week of the 3rd - 28 one week. Do hope [1868] is feeling lots better and please remember me to him very kindly.

R2. 5/8/39 Letter from [779] to EC: ”…[1868] was in the hospital about two weeks ago. [228] told me he was going to try and get him to have a reading to see if his trouble could be located. Then the next day I went to see [1868] and he too told me he was asking for a reading. I haven’t seen him since, but wife [780] saw Mrs. […] at Church few days ago and said that he was feeling OK again and was taking some kind of tablets and helped him more than anything he ever took or done. I sometimes feel uneasy about [1868]. He almost goes insane at times with his head…”

R3. 5/9/39 Brother [228]‘s letter:

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Please let me know how much [1868]‘s reading is, so that I may either send it to you or have it sent.

I have been talking to one of our men in the plant about your work - our production superintendent - and he is very much interested, and has asked that you send him your literature. He is also a member of the City Council of … The name and address is:

He has asked me several times recently about it, and I feel sure he has developed considerable faith in the possibilities.

R5. 9/11/50 He was listed as a survivor when his brother, [228], died.

R6. 5/5/57 Mr. [1868] died in Selma, Alabama and is buried in Live Oak Cemetery, Selma, Alabama. Mr. [1868] was born on November 23, 1889 in Faunsdale, Alabama.

R7. 11/2/93 JT’s note: Letter from granddaughter of [1886]: “Enclosed is a copy of a photograph I have of my Grandfather, Roger Coleman Butler, and Edgar Cayce. They were good friends and attended the First Christian Church together in Selma, Alabama. (My grandfather was quite a ‘card’ and he wrote ‘Pepsodent’ on the photo, no doubt because of his toothy smile!) Due to this personal relationship I have recently read some of the books by or about Edgar Cayce and found them very interesting and intriguing.

I am continuing to make contacts and interested sources in this project and plan to begin gathering, researching, organizing, and compiling all this material of the Butler family and Edgar Cayce into something that will be (hopefully) a unique angle of this material.

I have people in Selma checking for information, and plan to go there in April. I will collect pictures, obituaries, and other family information to send you for your Butler files. R15. 7/29/94 Dear Jeanette: “Thought I would pass along the article I was interviewed for concerning my relatives and Edgar Cayce. I am continuing to work on the research and readings… I finally got a letter from [305]. He is retired and constantly travels around the USA, so he’s not easy to catch up with. He was receptive to my including his family in my project. I think he will be able to help a great deal since he is one of the last living connections with the readings…”

Among them were Great Aggy and Little Aggy! (If you recall Anne/Mary’s statement: ’…The one who worked in the kitchen more than I did…her name was…was…Agnes? Agatha? Dear Edgar,

I am very glad you sent me a copy of the “New Tomorrow” [Dec. 1929 issue - out of print - see A.R.E. Library copy]. It should develop into a great force. The world needs a torch, and I judge from your first issue that is not your intention to permit bias, ignorance nor criticism to swerve you from your purpose.

Your lecture on truth is FINE. Possibly I would not be so enthusiastic about it had I not held much the same ideas, but not expressed in the lucid terms you use, for years. About a decade or less ago I began a study of Psychology which, I feel has altered my whole thinking and attitude toward life. I have never been a deep student, but I realize the untold value of it.

This boy, Blumenthal, is a bear. He’s a little deep for me, in spots, but I have no trouble grasping his fundamentals.

I notice he quotes Dr. Whitney several times. I wonder if this is the Dr. Whitney, a woman, who is a teacher in Columbia? She has written books on psychology, but I have never read one of them. If she is, then I feel that I should know something of her works, as my sister, [4953] is a personal friend, and has spent several weeks, at different times, in her home at Yonkers. This may be a different Dr. Whitney.

I wish to express my deep gratification in the fact that you’ve actually put it over - the hospital and etc. I have often wanted to help you, but it seems that I can handle money matters for others much better than for myself, and so am perennially flat. I have ever had a deep conviction that you had the STUFF, and that some day, like England, you’d muddle through. I realize that perhaps the hardest fight is before you. To keep an organization in complete harmony is a job that NO one has ever accomplished.

To approach this ideal situation will demand all your tact and executive ability - and bear in mind one thing - you’ve got to be BOSS, as little as it may appeal to your nature and as far as it probably is from your desires.

You’ll get a kick out of receiving advice from me, but you’ll realize the truth of my solemn words.

I have always been sold on the proposition and am tickled to death to think old Edgar Cayce put it over.

When you need that right hand man you’re always threatening to hire [228] or me, for, drop me a line. I think you’ve got the biggest thing in the world, and your service to humanity may make history for centuries to come. I’d like to help in the making - but you’d have to send railroad fare!

[…] [wife] has been in bed with a bad cold for a week. […] (Jr.) is a freshman at Alabama. […] should graduate from high school next year and […] sometimes washes his face without being told, so I know he’s getting girl-minded.

Was glad to see you had Hugh Lynn near you. I know Mrs. Cayce is delighted.

Well, I just finished reading your first copy, and tho it’s getting along toward morning I thought I’d SET down and tell you “I’m glad.”

Love to the “head man.” If she [GC] gets much younger some of these he flappers will try to run away with her. - She looked about 15 years younger than my memory says she should when visiting here last year.

Monday night

Dear [1868]:

I have yours of the 6th. It certainly was very gratifying to hear from you. You have no idea how many times I recall the many conversations that we had together, under various circumstances - our various attempts at work in different fields, our trips to a few of the conventions, and our work in the Sunday School and in the Christian Endeavor, and so forth and so on.

I’m certainly glad to know that you felt this would possibly succeed. I really and truly believe, [1868] that it has an enormous prospect before it - for most of the people, as I am sure you recognize from the little pamphlet, or the “The New To-Morrow” are more interested in the educational program than anything else. Not merely as propaganda, though - of course - it is going to be considered that way by the thousands - possibly by many of the people in the various walks of life, whether from the pulpit, educational standpoint, or what not. Of course, most of these people are educated. I happen to be the only numbskull in the crowd.

Blumenthal [Morton H. Blumenthal] is a Columbia man, his brother [Edwin D. Blumenthal] is a Pennsylvania man, Bradley [Franklin F. Bradley] is a Northwestern - and was superintendent of education of Illinois for a number of years. Brown [Thomas B. Brown? William Moseley Brown?] is a Stanford man. Our next program includes the establishing of a university in connection with the work. The man that heads this refused the assistant-secretaryship of war to become head of this. The building program will begin within the next sixty days. We may not open in September, but will by October anyway. We have had a lot of things to combat, as you saw from the pamphlet. We lost our physician who opened the institution. However, we have a good man at the head of it now - and also all the associate physicians are good. We have had some wonderful results in the hospital, and of course they are following the suggestions given in readings. I think, too, we are doing rather a wonderful work in the spiritual field - though it is sometimes the greatest conglomeration you can well imagine. Here’s a good illustration of it: One of our patients (who was brought in on a stretcher) - the physician who sent him, and the intern who brought him to the hospital, asked me if we would make an appointment for the return of the body - that he was sure the man wouldn’t live then more than two days, if that long. In three weeks the man was in my Sunday School class (I’m a teacher in the Presbyterian church - though don’t forget I’m a Campbellite). This man, however, was a Jew. He walked in and looked around the building, then remarked to the pastor of the church, “Well, I’m nearly sixty-one years old, and I’ve never been in a place of worship in my life - but I’m ready to go the whole way, accept Christianity and all.”

Yes, we are going to need a lot of men, [1868] I’ve already written [228], offering him a position. I don’t know whether he is going to consider it or not. I haven’t heard from him.

I may possibly see you in the next two or three weeks. In the meantime, take good care of yourself. I can’t tell you how glad I was to hear from you. I’m glad to say that we are all pretty well. Hugh Lynn should finish at Washington and Lee this year. If he does, he will probably take a course in the university (as it opens here), under one of the men who taught him three years in Washington and Lee, and who also offered the presidency of Washington & Lee, as well as the assistant secretary of war. Edgar Evans is getting along very nicely. Gertrude, I think, looks better - and has been better physically - than she has ever been in her life, since she has been here.

I haven’t any of this world’s goods, but I am believing I am laying up something in the Bank that will last a long time - in that one that never fails, with Him who is able to keep that we have committed unto Him against that day.

Glad to hear from the boys. Certainly would love to see […] and […]. I saw […], Jr. when I was there the last time.

The Dr. Whitney referred to in Morton’s article, is of the General Electric. By the way, in one of our departments - one of the chief engineers of the General Electric is heading one of our health services departments, as is also the chief engineer of the Radio Corporation of America. This sounds like bragging, I reckon - but I certainly don’t mean it in that sense - because I’m not doing it. I happen to merely be the little cog about which it is all turning.

Give my love to the folks. Love mighty well to hear from you again, but I hope to see you in the next few weeks.

REVIEW OF COURSE GIVEN WINTER 1929/1930 By Morton H. Blumenthal

The Fourth Dimension is part of knowledge of priori, or is that which needs no inductive proof of existence, but rather is a mathematical existence, exactly as one plus one equaling two, is conceded as an existent truth, and always was an existent truth, and always will be an existent truth in this world, or any other world. The evidence or proof of the existence of the Fourth Dimension, however, is manifold. First, it is admitted that the universe is infinite, thus indicating that all qualities of the universe must likewise be infinite. The universe must, therefore, possess not only the three dimensions of our world, but four, five and infinite dimensions.

Animal psychology teaches us that a one dimensional viewpoint exists for the lower animal, two dimensional viewpoint for the higher animal, and a three dimensional viewpoint for man. If there are dimensions that are realities lower than three dimensional viewpoint of man, then there must likewise be higher dimensional viewpoints that make for the individual or individuals possessing same, a world of four dimensions rather than one of three dimensions.

Advanced scientists today are reaching the conclusion that matter and space are one in essence; that being the case, there must be an essence reality that is measurable in terms of more dimensions than the three dimensions of solids. Where the third dimension of a solid ends, there space begins, but since the solid, or matter, and spare are one, realities occupying space may not only be measured as they are by themselves in space, but may also be measured as they exist in unity with space. Thus, the third dimension that records the end of a material reality, marks only the end of a FORM of one reality, which is but a part of a higher reality, namely, the essence of life or creation that composes the substance of matter and space, and which substance includes within itself all three dimensional forms, and thus, must be measurable in terms of more than three dimensions.

Finally, we have the evidence throughout all ages of many thousands who have experienced from a Fourth Dimensional viewpoint, a Fourth Dimensional world of unity, some of which experiences have been recorded in all languages and in many volumes of books. Ouspensky’s Tertium Organum records the author’s Fourth Dimensional Experience of the Oneness of himself, the sea and the boat, and James’ Varieties of Religious Experiences record innumerable other such experiences, some of the most noteworthy of which are those of Teresa.

What, then, must the Fourth Dimension be? As already indicated, it must be the essence of primal element of life, or that element that composes the substance of space and things that occupy space.

Since the lower animal possesses a mind that enables that being to cognize life from a one dimensional viewpoint, (i.e., sees matter and space as existing on a line), and the higher animal possesses a mind that cognizes it from a two dimensional viewpoint, (i.e., sees matter and space as existing on a surface), and the mind of man reaches that degree of development as to cognize from a three dimensional viewpoint, (i.e., sees matter as a three-dimensional reality existing in a three dimensional space), it is obvious that mind cognizes according to its degree of development, and that the outside world is to the individual what his internal mental tells him it is. We know the world according to what our three dimensional mind tells us it is - i.e., hard, soft, [fragment of transcript from course, no continuation available].

Dear Edgar,-

How are all of you? On a reading you once gave you branched out into home buried treasure on the Katy Morissette Place near Newbern Alabama lands].

There has been a lot of digging (before & after your reading) and the history of the case is that money & plate was buried. Francis Ikerman, for a lark (?), wants to go down & spend Sunday there.

Would you be interested in giving a reading & taking 25% (!) of the $16,000.00 in gold (surely by now the interest should amount to twice that much) as your share? If so write me at your convenience.

B7. 1/31/33 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [1868]:

Dear [1868]

Yours of the 28th was indeed a surprise. I had supposed you had forgotten there was ever anything of the kind around your vicinity, or a fellow like Cayce.

As to the subject mentioned, I don’t know whether any information through these sources would be of value of not. I am a little confused as to just how or where we could start out with this, in making a location. There seems to be no record of the former readings that were taken on the Katy May place; at least we can’t find any. Is this the same place? Gertrude and I were speaking about this the other day, and wondering if it is the same as the Morissette place.

Can you give us the present owner of the place, setting some definite point from which to start the location? This would enable a reading to be more definite in following a line of thought.

Gertrude and I were discussing the Katy May place when we had a request from someone who used to be a patient of Dr. Gewin. Gewin was the one to whom the first information was given; I believe he is in the Beyond now - and possibly he’ll want to help us find it (if he didn’t during his lifetime).

I do believe it would be well for you to give us as much of the history of the place as possible, the old names by which it has been called, who owns the place at present, and some definite starting point. If this is the same place as the Katy May, it seems there was a springhouse that could never be located.

We will be very glad to see what we can do. I don’t know whether the information will be worth anything or not. As always, I’m glad to try - even though I may be making a fool out of myself at any time.
