This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 28th day of June, 1939, in accordance with request made by the self - Dr. [1940], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by his mother - Mrs. [1010].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:20 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Alabama.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions he has submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1940].
-
As we find, the disturbing influences are an unbalancing of the chemical reactions in the system; owing to pressures that have existed, that do exist, from formation of scar tissue as well as adhesions added, - to make more acute this unbalanced influence.
-
Thus, in the attempts of coordination between the cerebrospinal and sympathetic nerve system, there are areas in which the pressures cause disturbance, as well as affecting the activities of the heart and the general nervous system.
-
Not that there is a true plastic condition in the nerve tissue, but owing to this unbalanced condition and the lack of the vital forces necessary to create in the plasm of the blood supply not so much the coagulative activities but the abilities to produce the proper balance - through the blood structure itself - between the red and white blood and leucocyte supply, we find that the lymph circulation becomes puffed in areas and NOT as active in others as it should be.
-
Hence toxic reactions are indicated.
-
In making applications for this body, then, - all of these phases should be considered.
-
First, we would have a gentle but thorough cleansing of the alimentary canal; preferably with a vegetable compound. As we find, the Simmons Liver Regulator would be well, - using the powder, which is preferable to the liquid.
-
When this has been accomplished, or there has been a good activity of same, then have a cleansing of the colon with a colonic irrigation. In the first waters for such irrigation, use a heaping teaspoonful of table salt and a level teaspoonful of baking soda to the gallon of water. In the last or rinsing water, use a tablespoonful of Petrolagar AND a tablespoonful of Glyco-Thymoline, - these kept stirred in the water as it is injected. These are given as antiseptics to prevent the toxic forces and less irritation to the wall of the colon itself.
-
Continue with these colonics if there is the continued showing of phlegm or the natural lack of proper assimilation.
-
The next day after the first colonic, begin with hot and cold applications; preferably using sheets or blankets wrapped about the body. There should be at least three applications of each, first hot, then cold, see? once or twice a week; three blankets of the hot, three blankets of the cold, see?
-
These should reduce the pressure, and take away the activities of the nerve forces so as to be most helpful.
-
Then, following such applications there should be the gentle massage, for THEN the adjustments AND the effect upon the ganglia connecting or coordinating the spinal system AND the sympathetic will respond the more easily.
-
The adjustments then, neuropathically, would be of quite a specific nature. With the gentle massage along the spine there would be pressures made upon specific centers: On the right side of the neck, at the vagus center entering that portion of the neck (right side, see?) hold the thumb of one hand (this with the body lying upon the face, of course, and the head straight - NOT to the side); and then there would be a pressure (with the other hand) on the 4th lumbar to the LEFT side of same. Such a pressure would be held for two or three minutes, gradually turning loose.
-
Then there would be a pressure with one thumb at the END of the spine, first on the one side and then on the other, see? but holding a pressure with the other hand, at the same time, at the second cervical, or between the 1st and 2nd cervical. Thus the tensions will be relieved between the sympathetic AND the cerebrospinal system.
-
Well that at least one meal each day consist MOSTLY of the raw vegetables. Use with same either the oils or salad dressing, as preferable.
-
Do not take fried foods at any time.
-
Take internally the CODIRON as a tonic; two pellets with the meal, noon and evening.
-
Do not take too violent an exercise or have great excitements, for these will tend to make for a greater strain upon the heart’s activity.
-
Do these, consistently; we will have the better forces and influences for correcting these conditions with the body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What weight should I be? (A) This will adjust itself if there are the proper precautions taken as to diet, and as has been indicated.
-
(Q) Will I be able to take trip in mid-July for two weeks? (A) This depends upon the response; but as we find it should be deferred until later.
-
(Q) Will I be able to work soon at my profession of neuropractor? (A) Within six weeks the body should be able to begin to exercise thoroughly, and should resume the practice - or should thus be able to resume the practice.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 7/19/39 [1940]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Cayce,-
Hope this letter finds you folks well. I am some better.
We followed instructions as near as possible.
I got myself cleaned out & then started the Hot and Cold blankets around my body. At the end of the second cold blanket my pulse had gone up to 104 & I was getting a severe pain in chest near Heart area. Had to leave off the last hot & cold blanket. Mother then gave me the spinal manipulations as per instructions. I sweat excessively all that night. According to the scales I lost 2 pounds that night in weight.
Next morning my right lower leg was very sore in the calf muscles and cramps kept coming in the muscles & I could not walk the distance of a block before my leg would just give out.
Before this night I was walking from 1/2 to 2 miles every day. Around the scar tissue of right shin has got real sensitive to the touch.
The second time we tried the Hot & Cold blankets. I again has the repetition of high pulse rate & hurting around heart.
I have been eating light. No fried foods; green salad, etc. with meals.
Assimilation and elimination is good.
Thought I had better report results so far & thank you.
Mother joins me in sending her love.
Your friend [1940]
R2. 7/19/39 Mother [1010]‘s letter to EC: [GD’s note: She [1010] is also a neuropath]
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Am not so well, but it is the hot weather.
We will not go to W. Fair at N.Y. as planned.
Even if we were financially able, could not leave [1940] as he has had four heart attacks in the last two wks. I believe if I had not been here to give him heart treatment in the one he had Wed. week, he would have passed out.
Dare not take him on long trip, nor leave him alone. He can’t take the blanket treat., made him worse. I live in dread, all the time, for it is an awful death. He won’t own up being as bad as he is.
Those three years he was away from me doomed him as to life here on earth this time. It is to late I think, but hope and trust he will get better.
Many thanks for Readings, and will begin payment on them soon as Mr. [1112]‘s business picks up in Sept. I am keeping up the living expenses at present. So glad I am able to do so.
Love to one and all.
Do hope you take care of your self.
Mother [1010]
R3. 7/24/39 EC’s letter to Mr. [1940]:
Dear Dr. [1940]
Thanks for yours of the 19th - glad you are some better. Guess the hot and cold packs should have been used rather than the blankets. That used locally would not have made your blood pressure run up so - use locally and see what you get and you will be able to regulate that better no doubt.
Use the packs on the limbs - muscles - and small of the back and not ever the pulmonary system. See if you don’t get results - use a good rub - like pine oil or combine - Olive Oil-Pine Oil and Peanut oil equal parts - that should relax the system, get that stiffness out. Haven’t cleansed out fully as yet or you would not have that contraction - try the Colonic again - until is no mucous.
Try these suggestions and then let me know - and if doesn’t help a lot let me hear from you and will check up again and see where we are wrong.
Please remember us with love to Mother [1010].
With all good wishes
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
R4. 3/30/41 Mother [1010]‘s letter: “[1940] passed away on Dec. 31, 1940; buried on New Year’s Day. He suffered so much, was so uncomplaining. I could not ask God to help him here, but to relieve his suffering. He had had heart trouble so many years. I miss him so, but am reconciled, the God of all knows best.”

B2. 6/10/39 Sun., Mother [1010]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce & Family,-
We regret it very much that we will not be able to get to the Convention this year.
My Son [1940], is not well enough yet to make the trip. Then too, the people who are going to the Fair with us cannot leave until July 17 or there abouts. I would love to be present at the Convention and meet the people and take part. I am sure it will be a great success.
And we know you are the greatest embodied Soul on Earth today. (Quote, “Once in two thousand years One such is born,”) so the great prophets say, Madam Blavasky, Annie Besant, etc.
As you & we all know, there is no one else on earth at present who can Junction on the Higher Mental Planes, through the Physical Body, as you do. What will we do when you pass on? Please take care of yourself.
Mr. Cayce I must have a physical reading for Son [1940]. Am enclosing $5.00 and will send balance as I can spare it. We are under great expenses and Mr. [1112]‘s business is nil from April to Sept. I am making good in my work.
With love to the family & you,
Mrs. [1010]
P.S. Wire date will give reading, collect. Please give me check reading at the time you give [1940].
P.P.S. Mon. A.M. I find I won’t be able to send money until later. Our Insurance is due, so please give me time for both, Son’s reading and my “check”.
Thank you Mother [1010]
B3. 6/13/39 Card: “I think it would be dangerous for [1940] to go to the World’s Fair. The heat would be too much for his heart, so please advise him not to go. Home is the best place for him, and the time is short for him to get much better, even following your forthcoming suggestions. I do not want him to know of this [note to you].”

B6. 6/23/39 Case History [of [1940]]:
General review of accidents, injuries, and health conditions for past several years.
In Nov. 1936 was struck on right shin with steel rod which caused a blood vein to burst several days later. Lost an excessive amount of blood before bleeding could be stopped. Had the veins (varicose) blocked by a Sodium Compound, which caused a very severe reaction. Had to go to Hospital. Was laid up all together about 2 months. My health was fairly good during 1937, except for shortness of breath on occasions.
Winter of 1937, while carrying a heavy suction hose on a large Drainage pump, I slipped & fell, causing several vertebrae to get out of line in back & straining of back muscles. The Company Drs. thru Therapy Treatments got my back in O.K. shape in about 6 weeks.
On March 2nd or 3rd 1938, I was set upon by 2 drunken men. After the scrap, I was slightly cut about my face & neck & had 2 fractured ribs. I was again laid up about 2 months.
In Febr. of this year, I caught cold, had Flu, Pleurisy in left side & after was in Hospital, Pneumonia developed for a few days, so the Drs. said. All these happening etc, were in Dearborn, Mich. For the last couple years, when I got those short breath spells, I would have to sit up in bed to sleep.
I now can lie on my right & sleep pretty good.
The Delray Hospital was the one I was in in latter part of 1936. It is on Green St near Jefferson Ave. W. in Detroit, Mich.
In Winter of 1937 when I got my back hurt, the Clinic I went to for Therapy treatments, is on Hancock St. between Woodward & Cass Avenues.
This Winter or spring 1939, in latter part of March, I was in the Eloise Hospital, Eloise, Mich. out from Dearborn about 8 miles.
The Doctors in last hospital said I had Rheumatism of the heart, & that was the cause of the short-breath spells. When I was in my late teens I was laid up about a year with inflammatory Rheumatism. [1940]
