This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of October, 1939, in accordance with request made by the father - Dr. […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended through Hugh Lynn Cayce at N.Y. meetings of the Association.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions which have been submitted, as I ask them:

EC: Now as we find, there are disturbing conditions which prevent a normal functioning of the glandular forces, - as well as this unbalanced condition producing the inclination for engorgements or accumulations about portions of the thyroid. And the general effect produced on other portions of the system is apparent, or latent in the disturbance.

3. These, then, are the conditions as we find them with this body, [2017], we are speaking of:

4. The blood supply indicates the disturbance in the glandular system, both as to the elements or constituents of same and as to the manner of the circulation between the heart, the liver, the lungs, and the lower hepatic circulation.

5. In the nervous system do we find the basis, or the greater causes - first causes of same; as we will find in the upper portion of the 4th dorsal center an impingement of a nature that has prevented the proper coordination between the cerebrospinal and the sympathetic system in its relationships to the activity of impulses of nerve force and blood supply through the vagus centers.

6. Thus we formed first an unbalancing in this activity in the internal forces of the thyroids, producing a tendency for same to accumulate or draw from the system - as it began to establish itself through this lack of proper elimination of the influences. Thus there became the greater nervous tension, the metabolism being disturbed, the activities drawing upon the influences from the whole of the hepatic circulation; and the growth then began to be indicated in the glandular forces.

7. As we find, this MAY be eliminated through absorptive measures; though, should the condition become more of an aggravative nature, operative measures MIGHT be necessary. However, we find that such measures should be only as a last resort and not as the first corrective measures, - for they would become too disturbing, and there would never be the full balance again in its activity through the coordination of the sympathetic and cerebrospinal system impulses.

8. In making for the PROPER corrections, as we find, through which this may be corrected, - it would be necessary to follow these rather consistently:

9. First, we would begin with an application of the low electrical forces from the Violet Ray (hand machine), using the throat applicator. These would be of a very LOW form, - that is, just so there are the connections that cause the applicator to be heated sufficiently to give the lowest charge to the body. This would only be used every OTHER day, - that is, letting a day elapse between two treatments. For instance, have one treatment today, leave off tomorrow, and have another the next day. Use only for a minute or minute and a half; applying same around the back, the side of the throat and a portion of the thyroid area affected, you see; though not too great an application OVER the area itself, you see. This will tend to stimulate activities so that absorption and elimination would take place, WITH the following of the other suggestions which we will indicate.

10. Now this will tend to apparently make for some nervous reaction as to be irritating, but this is to act as a counter-activity to those properties which would be taken internally - that is:

11. After the third treatment with the Violet Ray, begin with taking one minim of Atomidine in half a glass of water before the morning meal. Increase this one minim each day until eight minims are being taken. Then leave off one day. Then begin again with the one minim, you see; and so on. This will act with the thyroids to produce a better drainage, and eliminations. Keep this for a period of at least three series, then leave off for at least ten days to two weeks, and then begin again, - this time not increasing the quantity to more than five drops before leaving off a day, and then beginning with the one again.

12. When the Atomidine is first begun, we would begin also with the adjustments osteopathically. These, in the first series of at least ten treatments, would be to set up drainages for eliminations, from the upper portions of the body through the alimentary canal; as well as to stimulate the activity of the glandular forces in the DIGESTIVE and ASSIMILATING forces of the body.

13. Keep the eliminations somewhat above normal.

14. After at least six to eight treatments, then begin to make that correction in the upper dorsal areas where there are segments out of alignment, as indicated. These will be found from especially the upper portion of the 4th, 3rd and 2nd. These should be GRADUALLY, not all at once, brought to better alignment.

15. Give the osteopathic manipulations and adjustments, of course, twice a week, until ten are given in the first series; then leave off a week, and then give at least sixteen more. Then leave off a week, then have another series of fifteen to sixteen more.

16. Alleviating the pressures will make for a little high pulsation, but if the eliminations and drainages are still kept a little above normal, we should find responses; and within six to ten weeks we should find real relief; - not only of the swelling, which will gradually disappear, but the conditions in the face and eyes will be better, and the tendencies for pressures that arise from strain upon the lower hepatic circulation should be removed, and the general conditions be MUCH improved.

17. However, after six to ten weeks we would give further instructions.

18. After the second or third week of the osteopathic treatments, we will find it necessary to stimulate the eliminations or activities of the lower hepatic circulation; not as to produce any form of IRRITATION to the kidneys, but rather an excess, so that the formations or accumulations may be eliminated, that necessarily arise from the reduction of the conditions of overactivity of the glandular force. Hence the activity of the kidneys should be kept in such a manner as to prevent the inflammation becoming a part of the lower hepatic circulation disturbance. Therefore, about once or twice a week we would drink about two ounces of Watermelon Seed Tea, as a stimulant for this activity, without becoming too great a strain or stress. This will be found most beneficial. Crush or grind about a tablespoonful of the Seed, and let come ALMOST to a boil in a pint of water. Set it aside for some ten to twenty minutes, strain, and keep in cool place. Only begin this, though, after the second or third week of the osteopathic treatments.

19. In the matter of the diet, - keep away from large quantities of fats, though butter may be taken.

20. Plenty of raw vegetables should be given every day; that is, let one meal each day consist of a combination of raw vegetables.

21. As to the activities, - let the exercises be of a light nature; as walking, and the recreations of any kind.

22. The constant association with other individuals is not altogether advisable, but the body should NOT be so often alone as to become one to brood over the disturbances, - that will naturally arise with the beginning of the ABSORPTION of these disturbing influences.

23. Do these, and we will bring better influences, as we find, for this body.

R1. 10/6/39 EC’s letter to [2017]‘s father:

“Hope you have found the information for Miss [2017] of interest. Have through the years seen and had several cases of this nature; had them in most every stage of development. Very few operations have been suggested, one here and there, and certainly hope such will not be the case here. I do not know whether the secretary suggested any one for you to see about the suggestions or not, but there are two, either of whom, I would say, could and will handle the condition, I believe. Dr. Dobbins or Dr. Robinson, each of these gentlemen have seen a number of cases for whom readings have been given; Dr. Dobbins possibly more than the other. But it might be well to have the opinion of each of these men… Will be most anxious to hear from you, also as to what either or both doctors say…”

R2. 10/19/39 [2017]‘s father’s letter to EC:

“Thank you for the reading of my daughter, [2017], which I received promptly; also your kind letter of October 6th, which followed. The reading is complete and accurate and the treatment suggested sounds very reasonable. I had told already your son, Hugh Lynn, about the trouble [2017] had; not that it makes much difference to me, but I am interested to know if you knew of the case before you went to sleep, or you found out about it during or after the reading. You had already answered most of my questions in the body of the reading, and I notice that no more questions were asked while you were asleep.

“I first consulted with my old doctor, Dr. Richard Van Rumpt, [Richard Van Rumpt, N.D.] who is acquainted with your work. He thought the diagnosis was correct and the treatment suggested, good, except that he thought the Violet Ray will do more harm than good, as it will unnecessarily stimulate the thyroid gland. He also thought the 4th dorsal should not be touched. What he wants to do is to break the adhesions around the thyroid, and the abdomen, and relax and cure the thyroid that way.

“I also saw Dr. Dobbins. He also thinks that the Violet Ray will not do any good, although he thinks it may not do any harm either. He is willing to examine my daughter and treat her according to the reading.

“You suggested that I see Dr. Robinson. I do not know who he is. I saw about eight to ten doctors by that name in the telephone book, but I don’t know which one he is. Please give me his first name and address.

“Please also tell me if it will be all right to leave out the Violet Ray treatment and go on with the others. [2017] is still in the hands of this specialist. I am planning to stop his treatment and PROBABLY go to Dr. Dobbins. This I will do very likely next week, after I receive your answer. I am not going to buy the Violet Ray machine until I hear from you…”

“P.S. Some other friends who have pretty good understandings of diseases and health, say the same thing about the Violet Ray that it is not to be recommended. I am naturally interested to know about it.”

R3. 10/21/39 EC’s letter to [2017]‘s father:

“I have yours of the 19th. I’m glad you found the reading in accordance with the conditions and reasonable, and I am sure it will be helpful. No, Hugh Lynn had not spoken to me regarding your daughter until after the reading when questions have been answered. Mrs. Cayce doesn’t usually ask them over again, only when individuals insist they be asked. But we desire to have the questions, that the condition may be covered if it seems to be vague.

“As regarding the Violet Ray, use your own judgment about same. In the greater number of cases where such conditions have been described, the Violet Ray has been suggested. Whether the patient got better in spite of its use or that it was a help, I do not know. But as the doctors seem to feel it could be detrimental, why try it without, and if you don’t find the progress desired, we will ask about same, and see what would be suggested under the circumstances.

“Dr. Lawrence Robertson, 60 East 42nd Street, has seen a number of cases. I gave his name not knowing which would be the most convenient for you. Dr. Van Rumpt should be able to handle the case if you prefer.

“As for cases of sleeping sickness, [asked about on card of same date] while we have had several such cases, none have ever been written up, and would require under present arrangements, a good deal of research to give you anything that was general or specific, as given in the readings. We are hoping some time when we are able to have a cross index on the cases, to be able to have all such information available. We haven’t it just now.

“Hoping Miss [2017] will get as wonderful results as other cases of a similar nature…”

R4. 10/30/39 Mrs. [1602]‘s letter:

”…Dr. […] called me up and said he had had a reading for his daughter [2017] and that it prescribed thus and so and Dr. Dobbins. Well, he reports he went to Dobbins and Dobbins said the reading was okay, all but the ray treatments which, he apparently does not believe in, so he succeeded in boloxing Dr. […] up to such an extent that he hasn’t done anything! (That was last week.) I am going to have him meet Dr. Taylor [William D. Taylor, N.D.] with the idea in mind that he will be able to instill confidence in following the reading and generally in the work…”

R5. 11/5/39 Mrs. [1602]‘s letter:

”…Had Dr. […] meet Dr. Taylor, also [1749] here the other day, and Dr. Taylor helped a great deal. He was most decided in his opinion about following the reading as given, and explained that the only time he had no results from the readings, was when he thought he knew more than they did. But that was only once. I thought he was splendid in his confidence, which was what […] was asking for. So, the Violet Ray will be used (I think) and Dobbins will go on with the rest of the work. All is well, thanks to Dr. Taylor’s help at that juncture…”

R6. 1/22/40 [2017]‘s father’s letter to EC:

“In your previous reading of October 5, 1939 for my daughter, [2017], you stated that after six to ten weeks you wanted to know her condition and make an appointment to ‘check up’ on her condition. It is now two months and three weeks (about eleven to twelve weeks) since the first reading, and I wish to have a ‘check up’ on her condition. I didn’t write before, because I heard through Mr. […] of Boston that you were planning to be in New York soon and I was anxious to see you, but I understand through Mrs. [1602] that you may not be here until the first week in February. Please give us an appointment at your earliest convenience.

“Let me explain what I have done with my daughter.

“I took her to Dr. Dobbins and he has been giving her osteopathic treatments twice a week ever since. She missed only a few treatments. I am giving her Violet Ray treatment every other day. She is taking Atomidine as directed, also Watermelon Seed tea once or twice a week. She is especially careful about her eliminations. We have, therefore, followed the instructions given by you as closely as possible.

“Her condition, I think, has improved considerably. Dr. Dobbins also thinks she has. Her neck and eyes are a little better. After she stopped taking sedative drugs, her pulse went up again, but now it is going down again. Naturally she is happier and more optimistic. Soon I am planning to have a metabolism [test] taken to see what improvement her metabolism shows.

“Please give us a reading of the present condition and again tell us what to do after this: Whether to continue the same treatments or something else. Please tell us specifically whether the Violet Ray treatment is of benefit, and whether the osteopathic treatments should be given twice a week or not.

“As time goes on, she is becoming more restless and is anxious either to find a position downtown or to study in a school. Please let us know if it is advisable for her to do so.

“Please give more specific directions about her food, etc. Some have suggested that she take a fruit fast for a few weeks, but Dr. Dobbins does not agree with it. She tried to do that for a week or so and her weight came down. Dr. Dobbins does not want her weight to come down. Please let us know more definitely about food. I do hope an operation of the thyroid will be avoided and I am willing to do everything for her complete cure without surgical aid.

B1. 8/16/39 [2017]‘s father’s [Dr. […] Ph.D.] letter to HLC:

“I have not heard from you for a long time. Are you now in Virginia Beach? How is everything? I was with Commander [1949] yesterday. He came to Virginia Beach to see your father and had a Life reading. He was very much interested in it.

”[…] told me that Dr. Hardwicke [Henry S. W. Hardwicke] of the Psychic Research died a few weeks ago. Is that correct? If so, I am sorry, as I thought he was a healthy man, and still had many years to serve humanity.

“I am enclosing two papers which you have not probably seen. “Have you any treatment for exophthalmic goitre? It is also called hyperthyroid or Graves’ disease. It is the sickness which, in addition to the goitre on the neck, also produces bulging of eyes. If you have any treatment of such a disease, please let me know, and needless to say, I will pay you whatever expense it involves…”

B2. 8/23/30 HLC’s letter to [2017]‘s father:

“I appreciate your sending me the two papers written by you. I have found them both extremely interesting. It is good to see men with scientific minds turned more and more towards spiritual explanations of universal laws…

“Regarding the disease which you mentioned in your letter, we do not have any general information available from our files regarding it. I would suggest an individual reading on the case involved. We have in the past had a great number of various types of glandular conditions. Perhaps we might be of help in this case…

“Dr. Hardwicke’s death was rather sudden and unexpected. It resulted, I believe, from complications that arose following an operation. He was doing a fine work in New York and many people will certainly miss him…”

B3. 9/25/39 [2017]‘s father’s letter to HLC:

”…In my letter of August 16th, I also asked you to send me any information you had about thyroid gland troubles, and you said that you didn’t have any information on that disease, and suggested an individual reading on this case. My daughter’s thyroid gland is affected and I am anxious to get a reading. She is now under the care of a physician, but I want to know if he is doing the right thing. If not, I can always change the doctor. Please register me as a member, for which I am enclosing my check for $20.00, and give an appointment for my daughter whose name is [2017]. [2017] was born in Antwerp, Belgium on April 15, 1914.

“Could you be present at the time of the reading, and after the reading, ask your father some questions for me? Provided, of course, that he does not answer these questions beforehand. I can give you the doctor’s diagnosis beforehand. You can either tell your father about it or keep it to yourself until after the reading. My main object is to know the cause of such a disease and the method of treatment for it. As soon as I hear from you about the day of the appointment, I’ll let you know about the doctor’s diagnosis, and the treatment he is giving, and will ask you to ask him some questions, which I will let you know, at the reading. I hope I will hear from you soon.

“I hope you will let me know when you come to New York, and we can discuss this case, as well as others, personally. Yes, I am in touch with Commander [1949], and hope that we will be able to accomplish some things together…”

“P.S. After second thought, I believe it will save time if I tell you more definitely now, and let you know about the questions I want to ask you.

“About a year ago, she [2017] was working hard in a store as an artist in window display work. Due to the long hours of work, and certain emotional upsets, she lost weight and energy. The doctor diagnosed her case to be suffering from exophthalmic goitre. After a few month’s treatment, I sent her to California, where she regained her weight, which is normal now. Her blood pressure is also normal, but the thyroid gland is still troubling her. Her pulse is high and her breathing short, and she hasn’t very much energy to do strenuous work. Her neck is somewhat swollen, showing a fibrous type of goitre, and her eyes are slightly bulging. The treatment, I hope, will tell us how to get rid of this trouble.

“Please ask him if the bulging of the eyes will go back to normal or not, and is there anything that can be done about it. What kind of diet should she have? Is it all right for her to exercise, or go out for a walk daily, or stay home and rest, as her doctor has told her to do?

“Some doctors (not our doctor) insist that the only cure for goitre is an operation or x-ray treatment, or some form of electric treatment. As I am opposed to either of these methods, I would like to know your father’s opinion about it…”
