GC: You will give the physical conditions of this body at the present time, with suggestions for the relief and improvement of same, and you will answer any questions I will ask you regarding same.
-
EC: Yes, we have those conditions as regarding this body here.
-
Now, we find many things have become accentuated, especially in the mesenteric system, and the effect is to create a temperature and an over taxation to the whole intestinal system, increasing the amount of the mucus as is thrown off, and this produces temperature in the hepatics, and gives distress to the liver and the whole blood supply.
-
To overcome this condition, we would massage in the spine the equal parts of olive oil and of myrrh each evening until the body is very much improved, and the alcohol rub to reduce the temperature, cutting off the feed, and using high enemas of cool (not cold) water. This we find will reduce the condition, see?
-
Take to eliminate (should this continue) these properties, under the direction of physician:
-
Those of senna, yellow saffron, and Dover’s powders, sufficient to act on liver and the intestinal system, especially the colon. Do that.
-
(Q) How much Dover’s powers should she take at a time? (A) The dose would be:
Senna…1/2 grain, Dover’s Powders…1/4 grain. The carrier of the Saffron (powdered, see?).
-
(Q) Should this child be sponged, aside from the alcohol rubs, to reduce the temperature? (A) Using alcohol rubs will reduce the temperature, provided these others are used along the whole spine to prevent localization in various irritated centers throughout the nerve system.
-
(Q) Should any antiseptic be used in the high enemas? (A) Glyco-Thymoline be well. Half a teaspoonful to half a gallon of water.
-
(Q) How often should the Dover’s powders be given? (A) That depends upon conditions as may arise, as has been given.
-
(Q) What diet should she have? (A) Stews or broths, preferably, and milk (cooked), and toast, and butter in small quantities. Not too much sugar of any character, see?
-
That is all the questions.
-
We are through with this reading.

R1. 7/25/26 (Sunday night) Mother’s letter:
Dear Cousin Edgar,
I received the wire and reading ok. I am giving the treatment and [2036] is improving. This past Monday a week ago at supper time [2036] was taken suddenly very sick, complained with right side and stomach, could hardly talk or cry, breath short and seemed in great pain, called Dr. and he said to give paregoric and enema. Well she got some better, but fever ran high that night. I thought possibly she had acute indigestion as she had drunk several small glasses of cold milk, so on following Thursday morning about 9 o’clock, she had another acute spell, fever ran up and left her about midnight, then next afternoon (Friday) at o’clock fever came up again, but on Thursday I had [husband] to wire you and as I didn’t hear from you right away thinking you were so busy, I called Dr. again and he said maybe it was malaria and to give her chocolate quinine syrup. I had given her one dose when I received your wire on Saturday as I was scared to death about her. She hasn’t had any fever since the Friday you read her case, but this past Wednesday she had another spell. I didn’t get reading until Tuesday and had prescription for powders filled Wednesday so gave her a dose that night also high enema. Hasn’t had any more spells, have been rubbing spine each day since message, with the medicine and have her on diet prescribed and give enema most every day. Didn’t know how often to give powders, so I called the druggist and he said they could be given 3 times a day 6 hrs apart, so I have given so far 4 powders and will give one every day until she is alright. Cousin Edgar, what worries me now is that ever since she was first taken sick, she starts to yawn, she can’t, it cuts right off and when she starts to cry, she holds her stomach and breath seems to cut off and isn’t deep. That worries me nearly to death, it seems that her trouble is unusual.
When she crys it seems to hurt her and she can hardly get her breath, if she isn’t better of this at end of week I will let you know. Cousin Edgar I don’t know what I would do without your help now, so often Drs. don’t know.
I thank you a thousand times and deeply appreciate what you do for me. Mama [1181] hasn’t felt as well this spring and summer as she did last, she is run down again I guess. Hope you and yours are well, remember me to all,
Sincerely, [1690]
P.S. [2036]‘s stomach & bowels seem swollen part of time. I don’t know whether it is gas or inflammation, she is uncomfortable and grunts like she is full and tight.
R2. 7/29/26 EC’s letter to [1690]:
Dear [1690]
I have yours of the 25th. I have gone over the reading very carefully, and also had Dr. House [Thomas B. House, M.D.], who is here at the present time, go over same in conjunction with your letter. You know, [1690] I’m always mighty glad to try to be of any help possible, and I’m mightily in hopes that the suggestions as have been given will prove effective with this condition, but I am of the opinion, from what you say, as is also the Doctor, that it would be mighty well for you to keep a mighty close touch with a doctor until this condition is entirely relieved. This might become serious mighty quick. I’m in hopes, however, that she is still showing improvement, and that she hasn’t had any more of these spells. Should they come on again, I think I would wire right away, for it might be too late, if we didn’t do something at once. The Doctor says there are three possibilities with this condition. Either appendicitis, or a twist in the intestinal tract, or adhesions from the inside in the intestinal tract, but in either case, unless it would be very acute, there’s certainly nothing better than that as has been suggested in the reading. I wouldn’t let her eat anything particularly heavy - just that as has been suggested
- no raw milk, until she’s a whole lot better. Keep up those rubs and those high enemas, because the enemas are the things that should do the work, whatever the trouble is. But you let me know, and you know I’ll do anything that is in my power to do to keep things in shape. You let me know every day or two just how she is getting along.
With best love from all,
Your cousin,
R3. 8/2/26 Mother [1690]‘s letter:
Dear Cousin Edgar,
I received your letter Saturday and certainly appreciate you and Dr. House studying out [2036]‘s case, and am trying to carry out all suggestions.
[2036] is a great deal better. The things I mentioned in other letter are not noticeable now, still I am afraid she is not entirely alright yet. I gave her the powders almost every night until last night and tonight and have not given enemas every day as it is so hard to give them to her. She cries so when I do, she cries so hard, I think it tears her nerves to pieces. I give her American oil and Castoria every day or two and get good results also I have been giving her orange juice before breakfast, thought maybe that would help to move bowels. I don’t know whether I should do this or not, but she is and has always been so constipated unless I give her the American oil and Castoria and that cleans her out so good. Her diet is mostly dry food, and after she eats she seems uncomfortable and puffed up but hasn’t had any more of those spells. I am so thankful, I am rubbing her spine every night as you said.
I don’t know what I would have done without your help. [Husband] and I feel that [2036] would have been mightily sick. Cousin Edgar when you write again, let me know if you think the orange juice and Castoria is alright to give, and how will I know when she is entirely over this and I can feed her other things. I live in fear, so afraid she will have more trouble of this kind. Would you think you should read her case again later on to see whether she is alright or not? You have been grand to me and I appreciate what you have done more than I can tell you. Do hope I can repay you some time. Are you feeling alright now? I hope so.
Remember me to yours and I will let you hear from me again.
Sincerely, [1690]
R4. 8/7/26 EC’s letter to [1690]:
Dear [1690]
Glad to have yours of the 2nd and to know that your little girl is a great deal better. I don’t think there would be anything that you could use that would be better than the oil and Castoria. I would keep up these rubs though pretty regularly, and should she show any signs of returning fever, use the enemas, but I wouldn’t use them unless she does show some kind of fever. I think the orange juice is fine to give her before breakfast. I think I would occasionally, too, rub her abdomen with a little olive oil. Massage it well into the system, just all you can get the body to absorb. This won’t be necessary to do more than once a week, but I’m sure this will help to overcome this constipation, for you know the system will absorb more or less of this and it acts as a food for the system, as well as a lubricant. Possibly might be well to give her a dose of it once in a while if she can stand it, but taking the American Oil and Castoria may not make it assimilate well in her system. That’s why I suggest that you rub it in. The rubbing, as well as the oil, will do her good. When she is bloated, or seems to have a lot of gas, if you will heat a cloth thoroughly saturated with castor oil and lay over her bowels it will reduce this trouble, just as hot as she can stand it. I know this is rather severe for hot weather, and for a child too, but of course, as you already know, you will just have to work with her the best way you can. I’m mighty glad to have been of some help, and you know I’m always glad to try and do whatever I can.
With best love from all,
Your cousin [EC:GD]
