GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2094]; this we have had before.
-
As we find, there are changes in the general reactions through the system, though there is little that is of a worse disturbance than we have had here before.
-
We find that the sources of the disturbance rest with the assimilating system, in the abilities of the system’s activity through the glandular secretions to give that activity to the nerve plasm and the reactions to same that supply the needed energies.
-
These cause the disturbance; with the activities that are produced BY such in the functioning, and with the applications that have been made at times.
-
Also we find the inability for the activities, and the contraction in nerve and muscular forces, and the conditions arising at various periods of the incoordinations in the activity through the nerve forces themselves of the body.
-
These, as we find, are the sources or the causes.
-
The affectations especially in the pancreas, as related to that activity through the system, and as related to the digestive force - in the stomach itself as well as the gastric flows there, are also a part of the disturbance; owing to those inabilities of the system to create that influence which PRODUCES those elements which carry the energies to the nerve forces and activities of the body.
-
These are at times contradictory in their reactions, as indicated by the very nature of the conditions existent in the system.
-
As we find, in the present, it would be better to use the low electrical forces of the Wet Cell Appliance (rather than the Radio-Active as we suggested before), that would carry to the system vibratorially the properties of Gold for stimulating the glandular activity in relation to the nerve reflexes. We find that these would be the more helpful influences in the present. These we would use in the regular low form, with the attachments made in this manner:
-
The small copper plate would be attached to the 9th dorsal plexus, while the larger nickel plate - through which the vibration of the Gold Solution passes (in the proportions of one grain Chloride of Gold to each ounce of Distilled Water) - would be attached to the umbilical and lacteal duct plexus, which would be three fingers from the navel center toward the right side of the body. Make these attachments for thirty minutes each day. Change the Gold Solution every fifteen days, and recharge the Appliance solution every thirty days.
-
This used in this manner will gradually, slowly but gradually, aid in a better activity through the body; giving more strength because of the assimilating system being stimulated and because of the assistance in keeping the system relaxed as it rests.
-
This we would do.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Please give in detail a discussion of basic cause of the physical disturbances in the body. (A) As just indicated, this is the lack of the assimilating system to take from the properties digested in the system sufficient of the energies necessary for the supplying of the white tissue resuscitation in nerve plasm itself. This activity upon the system is the basic cause of the conditions that exist.
The organs involved, as we have indicated, are those that aid in the assimilating and eliminating forces of the system.
-
(Q) Explain what relation the lungs have to the source of infection? (A) Only the relation to the purification of the blood supply, that is not charged with those characters of plasm necessary; which as we have indicated are lacking owing to the inability of the system to take same from that digested or assimilated.
-
(Q) Is it a matter of not breathing sufficiently, or not the right kind of air? (A) Neither of these, though this naturally affects the system owing to the inability at times for the properties to be thrown off by the natural breathing, or the gas that forms with the flow of oxidization, causing the stuffiness, or the dizziness even at times that arises from same.
-
(Q) What is the condition of the stomach? (A) As we find, and as indicated, here the gastric flows are lacking in the properties that aid in assimilating those properties attempted to be digested. The position of the stomach is a little bit low.
-
(Q) Can that be corrected by exercise? (A) This should be corrected by exercise, a part of which may be done by the mechanical (osteopathic) manipulations or adjustments that will aid in stimulating and contracting the muscular forces.
True, some hold that the stomach itself is an organ attached up and down and that there CANNOT be such a thing as a tilted stomach. Yet when the nerve forces of both the pyloric and cardiac portions of the stomach are so lax, there is a tendency for tilting. Thus too easily, oft, there is the inclination for the stomach to empty WITHOUT there having been the reaction of the acids and alkalies, or the flows of the juices from both the portions of the stomach.
-
(Q) Is the lack of hydrochloric acid still prevalent? (A) The very nature or character of position, as illustrated in the X-Ray, indicates that the flow of the fluids is affected, and there is a lack of hydrochloric flow.
-
(Q) What is the condition of the intestines? (A) Naturally, from the conditions arising from the stomach and duodenum AND the jejunum in emptying themselves, there is a prolapsus caused in the lower portion of the colon, - as well as at times a dilation in the upper or transverse colon. This is the effect of gases, rather than conditions that remain. For they change as the activities of same move through the organs themselves. The gas is a part of the formation because of the lack of the gastric flow (or hydrochloric) to act upon the lactics as they enter the duodenum.
-
(Q) Is it possible to restore the muscular action of the colon? (A) If there is a better nerve flexus or nerve energy produced, then the strengthening to the depleted portions of the nerve system’s activity would naturally aid. This will not be wholly restored, but there can be a great deal better condition produced, not only in the peristaltic activity but in the strengthening of the abdominal muscles.
-
(Q) What causes the heavy gas pressure? (A) The activity in the cardiac portion of the stomach, with the lack of the flow of acids from the lower or pylorus portion and through the duodenum.
Here we find the gases forming because of the lack of the activity UPON the system by those properties.
WE would take the acid AND some calcium, in combination with the low electrical vibrations of the Gold for better assimilation, to aid in relieving this disturbance.
We find that the compound known as ACIGEST, with raw milk, is better assimilated than in the capsule form or tablets.
CALCIOS is an easily assimilated form of calcium.
These work together (the Acigest and Calcios), not only for aiding in a better form of assimilation but for acting directly upon the NATURAL sources of supply of these to the system, without becoming habit-forming.
The Acigest we would take once each day, of an evening; a little more than half a teaspoonful in a glass of RAW milk.
The Calcios we would take every other day, - just about sufficient to cover a small cracker.
- (Q) Am I infected with poisons from the colon? (A) Infected with poisons from the colon, which produces a form of anemia, - that is a part of the general condition as we have indicated.
But as we find all of these may be expected, - though we may gradually eliminate same if there will be the consistent use of those properties indicated, not only for better assimilation but for aiding to eradicate the SOURCES of poisons and to coordinate the general activity.
-
(Q) Should I attempt to take anything to change the colon content? (A) The properties indicated, with the general diet which is mostly followed by the body, will change the content, - and will change especially the area where the prolapsus occurs.
-
(Q) Should I attempt irrigations? (A) Not until those things indicated have been taken for at least three to four weeks. And then if there is still an indication of an excess of poisons, it would be well to use irrigations, - provided there is used a saline solution and not allowing such to weaken the body too much.
As we find for this body, the correct proportions for such irrigations would be - when used: First there would be used only a quart and a half of water in which there would be stirred a tablespoonful of Alkalin Petrolagar. Let the water always be body temperature exactly. Do not give it too cool nor - above all - do not give it hot!
After this has been ejected, use a second quantity of water containing a heaping teaspoonful of salt and a level teaspoonful of Bicarbonate of Soda to each quart and a half of water.
Of course, to dilate the colon it will require more than two and a half or three quarts of water, - but these are the proportions. Not more than a quart and a half with the Petrolagar, and then at least three or four quarts of the other.
-
(Q) Have the corrections been made properly in the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th dorsals? (A) These have been corrected in a much better manner than was indicated when we had the body here before, - but those conditions existing in the 11th and 12th dorsal and the first of the lumbars need to be corrected, so there is perfect alignment. The pressures upon the sphincter muscles in those areas about the end of the spine have not been greatly helped, owing to the pressures existent from the general muscular forces of the abdominal area. But these treatments will eventually be of an aid to the body.
-
(Q) What is the condition of the 5th lumbar? (A) Fifth dorsal as we find is very good. Fifth lumbar is wide in its area, - hence a sore area to movements in the body.
With general nerve relaxing these areas come much nearer to being normal, but the cartilaginous forces or cushions that exist tend to respond to the nerve forces, owing to the tensions in the sphincter portion and the nerves along the coccyx area.
However, with general relaxation, general stimulation through such applications suggested, we should bring better forces for this body.
- (Q) Should the osteopath treat only those areas, or give a general treatment? (A) Those areas would be specifically treated, but coordinating all of the reflexes from same.
For, the one who gives the osteopathic treatments, if thoroughly acquainted with his business (though many think they are when they are not!), will find that there are centers or areas from which both the cerebrospinal and the sympathetic or vegetative nerve system form conjunctions. If specific treatments are given and there is not a coordination of those plexus or areas where the specific conjunctions are made, these may tend to contract the body rather than relax same. Hence there should be the consideration of all of these when treatments are given.
-
(Q) What causes the soreness in the abdomen? (A) The general acid condition that exists through same, owing to toxic forces from the body poisonings.
-
(Q) Give a detailed outline of the best diet for the body. (A) This is a condition as we find that is best controlled by the experience of the body; though we would include occasionally the Jerusalem artichoke. We would not change other things that the body has found and does find that under varying circumstances, in various climes or activities are helpful, - for these might be found detrimental when prepared in another environ or clime.
As we have oft indicated, where an individual is allergic to certain influences, vegetables, activities, or any form of foods carrying the various calories, proteins and vitamins, - it will be found that these will vary in various sections. But adjust self to those that are grown the more in the section in which the individual resides at the time, - this is the preferable way, when practical.
Then, for this body, use those things that the EXPERIENCE has shown the body as being best. But do include occasionally the Jerusalem artichoke, prepared in its own juice and NOT in water. Take it in the manner as we have indicated.
-
(Q) What was the Jerusalem artichoke given for? (A) An activity upon the pancreas. It carries - it is the greatest source of insulin that may be assimilated by the body.
-
(Q) Should the White’s Cod Liver Oil be continued? (A) If this is assimilated by the system, very well. There will be changes necessary in the vitamin forces with the use of the Acigest and the Calcios. With these, then, there would not be indicated such a need for the Cod Liver Oil, - if these are used in the manner indicated; though if there is the feeling of greater fatigue, the cod liver oil may be used again.
-
(Q) What will relieve the condition of hay fever? (A) This as we find is the inflammation of the mucous membranes as produced by the general atmospheric pressures and the conditions where certain influences act upon the mucous membranes. We find that the use of an inhalant would be helpful, which is in itself only a protection - or to prevent infection by any particles or fumes inhaled, or odors. Prepare same in this manner:
To 4 ounces of Grain Alcohol, add - in the order named:
Oil of Eucalyptus…20 minims, Rectified Oil of Turp…5 minims, Compound Tincture of Benzoin…15 minims, Tolu in Solution…30 minims.
Keep this in a container twice the size of the quantity of the solution. Shake well before inhaling. Preferably have two vents into the space above the solution. Keep both corked well. Inhale in the nostrils once or twice a day, or whenever there is irritation. It acts as an antiseptic and as a purifier, and prevents irritation from any stress upon the mucous membranes.
-
(Q) I often have a similar condition to hay fever even in the winter time. What is the cause? (A) Inflammation to mucous membranes; and the applications and the inhalant indicated will keep down such.
-
(Q) Does it come from external or internal influences? (A) As just indicated, it comes from both! At times it arises from fumes, pollen, odors. At other times it arises from the lack of air flow over the lungs, affecting the mucous membranes through which the air passes. Hence at times the throat becomes infected, as well as the mucous membranes of the nasal passages. Hence the inhalant.
Do as indicated, - we will find bettered conditions for this body.
- We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/7/40 [2094]‘s letter to EC:
“Your diagnosis of my condition was received yesterday and I immediately ordered the two remedies, Calcios and Acigest, from the Colloidal Health Products Company and they arrived this afternoon. I also made an appointment with Dr. Dobbins and he examined and treated me, but very lightly. He seemed to agree with your diagnosis and said that the results he had had with most of those you had sent him were very excellent; all of which is encouraging.
“In regard to the taking of the Calcios, I am uncertain about the amount because you say, ‘just about sufficient to cover a small cracker.’ I am sorry, but there are a great many small crackers, all different sizes from one inch to one and a half inches square. Also, should it be spread on a cracker? I shall appreciate more exact directions. The directions on the jar says: ‘Take on the end of a teaspoon the amount that would be comparable to the size of a crushed pea,’ also somewhat indefinite.
“In regard to the electric battery which you recommended: While I shall, of course, immediately obtain and use this apparatus, it may be difficult to keep it undisturbed in a hotel room.
“As to the ingredients, I am not sure that it will be easy to purchase sulfuric acid in a large city drugstore, if at all; also the Willow Charcoal. There is a direction to use ‘zinc,’ but in what form, chloride, sulfate of zinc, or what? Gold Chloride can, I suppose, be bought easily, but I shall have to inquire.
“As I left last Friday, I asked your son to order an electric apparatus made for me, and to notify me when it was ready and I will send a check. At that time I did not realize that there had been a change in the type of apparatus; also a difference in price.
“My trip north took eleven hours on Saturday and was very hard on my poor body. But I am resting a good deal, but in general, I am feeling extremely unwell. The tensions, the burning sensations are hard to bear, but must be borne until relief comes one way or another…”
R2. 5/9/40 EC’s letter to [2094]:
“Having had the privilege of talking with you in person, I can’t help but feel consciously a bit closer. I am glad to have yours of the 7th and that you have seen Dr. Dobbins. I have a great deal of faith in his ability and am sure he will tell you just what he finds, and he doesn’t court favoritism.
“In regards to the Calcios: In each case it has been given, it has described it as what would be on the point of a table knife, or what would spread on a cracker. I suppose, about the size of a premium wafer.
“I will, no doubt, hear from Hugh Lynn about the Appliance. I think he has ordered it to be made up.
“I hope the trip didn’t prove too severe on you. I am sure it was hard, but trust you are feeling much better ere this…”
R3. 5/12/40 [2094]‘s letter to EC:
“Your suggestions have been followed as faithfully as possible in regard to taking Acigest and raw milk each evening (I take it about 9 P.M.) and Calcios every other day. But the Acigest evidently irritates my intestines badly, especially the rectum causing greater contraction of the sphincter than ever and makes the anus very sensitive. This causes also violent contractions in back, abdomen and back, especially in sacral region and my limbs; very bad at inside of knees, calf of legs and soles of feet. In fact, I have never felt so very badly and am most discouraged. If this is merely a reaction which will pass shortly, I guess I can stand it, but if not, I can see no other course than to discontinue this remedy. The condition is both uncomfortable and distressing.
“Also, Dr. Dobbins has merely stretched me a little. It may be a proper procedures for undoubtedly he is a capable osteopath, but the contracture [?] at the 5th lumbar where it joins the coccyx is very contracted and seems to grow worse. All the osteopaths seem to want to avoid this point - much is the one responsible for most of the contracture [?] in the legs. I feel sure he seems to think you want me to be treated without the usual strong adjustments, which most osteopaths make and which at times are rather severe. But I am very contracted and need to be released at that point.
“I do not quite understand what you refer to when you say Dr. Dobbins does not show any ‘favoritism.’ If you think that I expected anything but a good and proper treatment, you are mistaken. I do now know what I could have said to make you think otherwise.
“To go back to the acid condition of my feces: I tested these with litmus paper and got a red reaction.
“I might also mention that the burning sensation in back, abdomen and especially sacral region and legs is almost unbearable. I find it very hard to walk even a little distance, and when I get home, I burn all over. I’ve had this burning a good deal before, but never so bad nor so consistent.
“If you will please let me know whether I am doing anything wrong in following your directions, I shall be glad to hear.
“So far, I have heard nothing about the Wet Cell electric battery you recommended me to use. If this is important and will relieve my nerves, I should have it soon. I relied upon the promise of your son to have it made at once. I therefore wrote the manufacturer about it. I trust he will reply soon. It is now ten days since my visit at Virginia Beach.
“I should greatly appreciate your early reply to this letter, with a special delivery…”
R4. 5/15/40 HLC’s letter to [2094]:
“Your letter of the 12th, addressed to my father, is before me. “I can well understand the difficult position in which you find yourself, disturbed by the reactions you describe. My suggestion is that you delay your treatments just a few days until we can have the Wet Cell Appliance sent to you, for I believe all of the treatments should be taken together, and that you will then find the reactions to be far less irritating.
“I will talk again with the young man who makes up these Appliances and see if I cannot have him send it to you immediately. These are not made up for commercial production, but as a favor to us. Comparatively few of them are made each year, and as a result the expense is naturally high.
“Also, I am writing Dr. Dobbins today about your case.
“We appreciate your interest, and I certainly hope you will obtain beneficial results. We can only speak from the experience in the past where the suggestions made have been followed exactly.
“Please keep in touch with us…”
R5. 5/15/40 HLC’s letter to Dr. Dobbins:
“I have a letter from Mr. [2094], who I understand is taking treatment from you.
“Will you please let me have your observation on this case? He seems to be suffering a great deal and I am confident that if we can get him to follow all the treatments at the same time, he can be benefited…”
R6. 5/16/40 Dr. Frank P. Dobbins’ letter to HLC:
“Mr. [2094] has been in for treatment. The man has some disease of the central nervous system. I believe that the condition has been diagnosed as a lateral sclerosis. Treatment for conditions such as this is very disappointing and not at all favorable. The prognosis is very definitely poor. I have suggested to him that we follow the reading in all details. He tells me that he is having trouble getting the Wet Cell. I shall do everything that I can for him and believe if we can get his cooperation over a period of time that he will respond to treatment…”
R7. 5/16/40 [2094]‘s letter to EC:
“It is nearly a week now since I wrote you regarding my very painful conditions, asking for immediate advice. I am, therefore, greatly puzzled at not receiving some sort of a reply.
“As I told you I was suffering intensely as a result of the acid condition in my intestines, which evidently came from the taking of ‘Acigest’ in milk. In fact to test this, I discontinued this remedy for several days and the more intense contractions and burning sensations grew less and the soreness in rectum and anus cleared up.
“As I told you, if this phenomenon were only a passing phase, I would, of course, suffer the inconvenience for the time being, but not hearing from you puts me in a strange dilemma.
“The effect of taking this Acigest seems to confirm what I have often suspected, that my blood was too acid, which in turn irritated the nerves. Of course I may be wrong.
“It may be that you did not receive my letter, if it was incorrectly addressed. However, it would have been returned to me, for I had my address on it.
“Or you may be offended at my questioning the accuracy of your findings. If that is true, I am sorry. But, as you no doubt realize, there is quite a difference between your first and second examination. Or I should perhaps say, there was considerable addition to the first. The serious condition of the colon region was not noted; the stomach disorder also. There was a change in the advice to use the Radio-Active machine to a Wet Cell electric device. I am not objecting to this. I simply must use my intelligence to not give it up, and notice the reactions of my body to the treatment you advise. I have in the first instance, also told you of the seeming disturbances resulting from osteopathy in the past. In the last two months of treatment there has been very little appreciable change for the better, certainly not in the lower extremities. I should say that in many ways, I feel much worse. In spite of that, I have continued, but I must understand why this is so. I cannot do things blindly. If that is required of your patients, then I am not a good one.
“If I understand, even if things appear worse, I will go on as far as anyone. It seems to me I am entitled to a frank statement from you, if you please…”
R8. 6/2/40 [2094]‘s letter to EC:
“It is again necessary to write you concerning the effect of the remedy you suggested for me to take: Acigest. I find it produces the most disagreeable symptoms, increasing the tension in my legs, abdomen and back and the strong contraction and irritation of the rectal sphincter. I wrote you some weeks ago about the same symptoms and after waiting a week, I discontinued, for no word came from you in reply. Later a letter was received from your son suggesting that I wait until I could put all the suggested treatment into operation at once. Therefore, when the electric battery arrived a week ago, I began with the Acigest in raw milk, using at first only a few drops, increasing the same a little each day. I have not yet reached half a teaspoonful yet. Nevertheless, the irritating effect has increased, until now I feel that I cannot continue this remedy, unless I have your assurance that this is only a temporary effect. I asked this question before, but have received no reply.
“So far, I have seen no improvement. On the contrary, a distinct getting worse of my symptoms. Although I am following your advice and am going twice a week to Dr. Dobbins - with whose treatments I am satisfied insofar as they are good treatments, but the effects do not seem good, but produce an irritation; a sensation of burning throughout my lower body and legs which is hard to bear. It may be too early to tell what the effect is. I have had nine osteopathic treatments, but only a week of the gold electric treatment. I shall appreciate an early reply.
“Please change my address to the one at the top of this letter. I asked to have this done in my last letter, but it was ignored.
“I shall also appreciate your not telling anyone of my consulting you. It is nobody else’s business but my own. I have tried so many different things that I do not care to try to explain that I am trying something quite different now…”
R9. 6/3/40 EC’s letter to [2094]:
“I have yours of the 2nd. I’m sorry about the delay, but I was away, for a bit of rest. From your letter and the effect of the Acigest, suppose we check up on the conditions Friday morning, the 7th, 10:30 to 11:30 E.S.T.? Please wire me, as you possibly wouldn’t have time for a letter, unless special; but don’t airmail, just special delivery.
“That is the best way I know how to answer your questions about it. I think you find Dr. Dobbins an excellent man.
“Let me know about Friday morning…”
R10. 6/5/40 [2094]‘s letter to EC:
“Your letter just received, marked special delivery, but without special delivery stamp. Hence it came ordinary mail.
“The time you suggest, 10:30 to 11:30, June 7th will be observed by me. One thing I neglected to ask when I visited you, or during your describing of my conditions and one which is important, is the following: Is there any degeneration and destruction of the nerve cells of the spinal nerve? Is this condition repairable or can a normal condition be restored? This is, of course, important.
“I should like to remark that when I took hydrochloric acid in the form of acidulum [?], I did not have such an irritation of my intestines and rectum as now.
“I note also that the Acigest seems to effect the kidneys, because I note more copious and frequent urine; also some slight irritation in the urethra. When I have this irritation in the kidneys, I notice that my eyes are also affected. My eyes bother me considerably and are inflamed and sensitive, and have been for some time. I have dropped the Acigest temporarily.
“By the way, I hear Mr. [2091] and Dr. [2246] have not found any oil. Too bad.
“With best wishes…”
