This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent. Virginia Beach, Va., this 7th day of June, 1940, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [2094], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 11:20 to 11:30 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here; this we have had before.

3. There are improvements, and there are discouragements with the applications which have been made. The body finds periods when there is a great deal of upsetting, and then periods when there are bettered conditions.

4. We find that there is the lack of the plasm which makes for the nerves’ reaction, - or there is a gradual destroying of nerve impulses, which causes the muscular forces, tendons, and general activity, to become at times more and more disturbing, - or the multiple sclerosis.

5. This as we find, then, is the basic cause of disturbances.

6. The body feels that the character of the acid upsets the system. It should not, - but this is a matter of mental reactions to the character, or manner in which it is taken.

7. Then, we would leave this off, - if there is the desire to take same in the former way and manner. For, better assimilation is needed - as we have indicated.

8. We would continue with the use of the Appliance carrying Gold into the body vibratorially.

9. We would keep these consistently, for these offer - with the general correction osteopathically - the better activities for the body, and the improving of the conditions. For, the vibratory forces of Gold to the body should aid the assimilating system, not only to take FROM that assimilated more of those elements that aid to build bettered conditions in the nerves, but the stamina of the nerve plasm should be aided by the low electrical forces carrying this solution into the system.

12. (Q) Please explain why the Acigest has the irritating effect. (A) Just as indicated, it is more a matter of the mental self, and because of the desire to keep same in the form that it has been used.

13. (Q) Why do all my symptoms seem worse instead of better, although I am following the advice and going to Dr. Dobbins twice a week? (A) As indicated, the body is really better; though there is the need for creating some inflammation that there may be better assimilated from the active forces within the body those elements which will aid in strengthening the nerve plasms of the body.

This has not attacked the spinal cord plasm, but more the locomotion and the superficial portion of the nerve plasm’s circulation.

14. (Q) Why do osteopathic treatments seem to produce a sensation of burning throughout lower body and legs? (A) They should; for when there is brought the nerve impulse to the plasms or centers or bursa along the areas, this then tends to take from the system that which would supply strength to the nerve centers themselves.

15. (Q) Is this condition repairable; that is, can a normal condition be restored? (A) As we have indicated, if there is consistency and persistency in the applications for the conditions, we may repair these disturbances. This will take time, it will take patience, it will take persistency and consistency.

R1. 6/8/40 EC’s letter to [2094]:

“I just hope the suggestions offered in the last reading helps. If I remember correctly, Dr. Dobbins has had a case very similar to yours, though the man [[1623]?] at the time was in a much worse condition. He reported the effect of the Appliance in connection with his work once. He might remember it if you would care to know the results obtained with the use of the suggestions.

“I hope you will soon be seeing and feeling the results of the application of the suggestions.

“Yes, I understand Mr. [2091] and group have abandoned the well; too bad. I still believe they have oil on the property.

“Hoping to have been of a help…”

R2. 6/20/40 [2094]‘s letter to EC:

“Your report was duly received, but just before coming up here in the Poconos. I find it rather cool here, but down in New York City, it was too hot. It seems difficult to find a happy mean, for I am affected by both extremes.

“In regard to your report: I am glad you think I have no nerve cell deterioration and that the electric gold treatment will eventually restore the nerve vitality. I am looking for no miracle and shall be thankful for a reduction of the very disagreeable and distressing symptoms. I had already heard about a case of yours, a case of multiple sclerosis, which Dr. Dobbins reported had recovered. Whether my case is anything like this patient, I do not know. He was much younger, I believe around fifty. Also he had a wasted limb. I am seventy and, so far, there is no sign of wasted limbs or body. In fact, most doctors consider my physique very excellent, even fresher and more solid than with many much younger men. That has given me hope that my condition is not irreparable.

“Your statement that my inability to take the Acigest comes from my ‘mental self’ or one might say because of some prejudice against it, is, I fear, not well founded. I should say first of all that, although I did not notice any reactions from the ‘Acidulin’ which I formerly took, I had given it up long ago as ineffectual. I saw no results after five months. I was very glad when I was directed by you to try the Acigest and did so without the least prejudice or antagonism, but on the contrary with the hope that it would produce some result. After taking it a few days I felt the irritation in the rectum and anus and wondered what could be the cause. I did not think of the Acigest at first, until I noticed that the irritation increased every day. I wrote you and asked your advice and whether this was only a temporary symptom or no, but never received an answer. After a week or more, I think, your son wrote for me not to continue the Acigest until I could start ALL the treatments together, for then I had not yet received the electric apparatus. So I waited another ten days or two weeks for the electric apparatus to come and began again, with the same results, although I began, as I wrote you, with only a few drops at first.

“One would hardly say it is the ‘mental self’ if an irritation of a very similar kind came after eating some sour cherries. And I have had just that experience.

“There can be no doubt that my body is very acid; too acid as is proved recently by tests. This acid condition undoubtedly irritates the nerve centers. Some acids turn to alkalines when digested and alkalize the body. Others do not, especially mineral acids, but also some fruit acids. So I hardly believe I am so narrow as to expect a bad result and then experience it as a reality. I had only good expectations or hope.

“The attempt to use the battery you recommend has had some curious difficulties. First, I asked immediately before I left Virginia Beach to have one ordered made. It took a month before I got it. I used it for two weeks, then went on a two day trip to find this place. On my return I was astonished to see the floor underneath the box covered with a green liquid. No one had entered the room in my absence. I opened the lid of the box and attempted to lift the crock (which was covered on one side with green crystals) containing the battery fluid and all of one side fell away in my hands. As I attempted to carry the broken pieces to a safe place, it also fell into several pieces as though rotten. It was a mess, I can assure you!

“It took me several days scouting about in New York City to find another crock of the proper size. Then as I was about to get ready to pack the crock, I noticed that there was something loose with the inside wire running between the gold solution and the negative electrode. I examined it and found that the maker, in packing in the crock with thick paper, which he pushed down in that corner, had bent over the little thin connection soldered to the wire, and as a result the wire had almost been broken off. It was attached to the electrode wire by only a single little strand. I had noticed this bent attachment and wondered why it was different from the other electrode attachment, but unfortunately, did not examine it carefully. So in all probability, I have been getting no electric current during the two weeks I tried to take this treatment. And it is now a month and three weeks since I saw you.

“I was just packing and ready to leave New York when I discovered this condition, so I had to come up here. After I got settled I took the wire to the village electrician who charged me three times what it was worth to repair.

“Just now, everything seems in order, at least I hope so. There seems to be no way to test this machine to see whether it is operating or not. At least, I have no instrument for that purpose, although electrometers of all sorts exist. There are probably some that would detect even as low a current as this one.

“You may be interested to hear that not long ago I cut out an article from a New York newspaper describing the introduction of medicinal substances into the body by means of a low galvanic current for nervous conditions. I have been unable to find it again. But I have another one describing the same thing by a Dr. Gustav Erlanger of the Manhattan General Hospital of New York City, who treats eyes with remarkable results. He calls it ‘iontophoresis,’ treatment of the autonomic nervous system.

“I am not sure whether I owe you anything for the recent reading, which was to find out why recommendations had not been working well.

“My address will be the above for the present…”

R3. 6/25/40 EC’s letter to [2094]:

“Thanks for yours of the 20th. I’m sorry you have had such a time with the Appliance. I wish we were able to have some research work done on these Appliances, for when we find them suggested, and they have given marvelous results in many, many cases, it is necessary to have them made up by hand. This company has attempted to do so. We have had several times, such results as you had with the broken crock; why I do not know. I suppose they should use some composition like hard rubber or a composition, but it makes them cost so much. It was just negligence that it was packed so as to break connection. But I hope you have it right and the solutions that charge the Appliance all correct. Yes, these will show a current with a meter, but the amount of current is according to amount of ingredients used, so I am told. I do not know one thing about electricity.

“As to the Acigest: This is supposed not to make an acid system, but to alkalize same. I can only give what the information says; it may be all wrong.

“Yes, I am told there are many who give a form of electricity to carry solutions into the system.

“I do hope you will soon see real results from the last suggestions given.

“Thanking you and hoping to hear from you again soon…”

R4. 8/27/40 [2094]‘s letter to EC:

“It has been some time now since I began the treatment you recommended and I have carried it out carefully with the exception of the Asidose [Acigest?], which as I wrote you caused violent irritation and caused strong contractions.

“I have taken the electric treatment with the Chloride of Gold daily for a half hour. I have been treated osteopathically by Dr. Dobbins with a brief change when I was at …, where I had another osteopath.

“These treatments, so far as I can see, have just irritated me. I feel much worse today than I have at any time. In fact, during the last week, I had more pain in the legs, hips, back and abdomen than at any time before. I have great difficulty in the morning when I awaken stretching out my legs straight. The contraction in the under part of upper legs is very strong. I feel burning and tingling in the lower part of my body constantly. It never ceases. There is also a slight feeling of the same in my arms and hands. With this before you, what do you think I should do?

“Everyone says I look well, I have a good color; although I walk with difficulty. There is still considerable gas in both intestines and stomach, perhaps not quite as bad as formerly, but it still causes distention and contraction. I never have a natural movement. I am highly nervous and irritable, more at times than others, especially after an osteopathic treatment.

“I have considerable worry which I try to forget and hold in check. But my finances are bad and seem likely to be getting worse, and I can see no way to better them as long as the present world condition continues. In fact, one can almost expect to go bankrupt if the present trend continues.

“You spoke once of Dr. Guy B. Stearns and I told you I had been his patient just before I consulted you. Do you think he could help me? Of course, his treatments require a long time. But his diagnosis seems sound. He has given me gold in the past. Would his medicine conflict with the gold-electric treatment?

“It may interest you to know what I have discovered in regard to the ‘porcelain pot’ used with the electric battery and why it breaks to pieces sometimes.

“First: I should say, the pot which came with the rest of the apparatus from Norfolk was of a very inferior quality, and the edges were extremely thin. The one I bought to replace it was thicker and it was a very much better quality. It only cost eighty cents. The other one therefore, could not have cost more than fifty cents.

“Second: One day I tried to lift the wooden cover which is made so this part fits down into the jar. Now recently the one I have was so tight when I tried to take it off that I was afraid I could not do it without damaging the jar. Finally it came off. When I had put it on previously, it was somewhat tight, but there was no difficulty in getting it off. I noticed also that there was considerable moisture on the wood, and that there were considerable green sulfate of copper crystals on it; also on edges of jar and even down the sides and on bottom. It suddenly dawned on me that the moisture had caused the tight wooden lid to swell and thus caused the thin sides of the jar to break, spilling all the stuff on the carpet. When I left the apparatus in my room at the time it broke, the weather was still cool and the heat was often on in the hotel and the room was closed tight; so during my absence, undoubtedly there was more evaporation of the solution and swelling in the wood. Thus the cause of the breakage seemed solved. Perhaps if you instruct the manufacturer of this apparatus to look into this, he may prevent future disaster.

“That the material of the jar that came with the apparatus was poor, was shown by the fact that when I picked up a broken section, it too fell to pieces as though it were rotten. This showed me that the moment the glazed surface was broken, the liquid seeped into the porous clay and rendered it rotten.

“Excuse this long letter, please. With best wishes…”

R5. 9/5/40 EC’s letter to [2094]:

“I’m glad to hear from you, but sorry indeed to hear you are not feeling so good. It is hard to say just what to suggest to you. But I would say I think you should see Dr. Stearns again [Guy Beckley Stearns, M.D.] and ask him regarding Dr. Taylor, who I believe, presented a case very similar to yours to the work, and who, I understand, has gotten lots of help [[1623]?]. Dr. Stearns will know which Dr. Taylor [Charles Goodman Taylor, M.D.] to have reference to, as he was the one that introduced Dr. Taylor to me.

“Now as regarding the Appliances: Yes, I realize the material is not so good as the Appliance really deserves. I think the containers should be of hard rubber or composition that is not affected by acid. But the darn thing is so expensive any way, people just won’t pay for them. The top and the container should be rubber or composition. I have tried to get the company to have these made, but they would have to have a dye made and the cost seems prohibitive to them.

“I do hope things in every way clear for you soon. I suppose, when you see Dr. Stearns that you suggest if he would like to ask any questions through me. I will be glad to try and cooperate any way I can; and Dr. Taylor also. Each of these I believe use a different mode for diagnosis, but usually arrive at the same conclusion.

“Know I am anxious to try and help. So far, it seems not to have been of much good. Let’s hope we may do better yet.

“I hope you will let me hear what Dr. Stearns has to say…”
