In Coats-Gafney Time of Reading Clinic, 10:40 to 10:50 A. M. Eastern War Time. Tyler, Texas.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, conditions are not so good. Cold, or the excess of the attempt of system to create lymph for the conditions through the limbs, has drained the strength and vitality of the body.

3. We find that these conditions are being handled as well as might be.

4. We find it would prove beneficial for the body to have added the normal dose of those properties administered by the homeopathic profession for phlebitis or dropsical conditions - cimex lectularius.

5. Do that.

6. Ready for questions.

7. (Q) Any further suggestions for care of his leg? (A) Only those precautions to protect from the breaking of the cuticle itself.

8. (Q) Any advice regarding diet to build up resistance. (A) Those foods that are easily assimilated are the better. The resistance, though, is very low.

Dear Mr. Cayce;

First let me thank you for giving the Health reading for [2246], a copy of which arrived here day before yesterday. No doubt [2246] has received his copy in Tyler before this, only I just haven’t heard from him since it arrived.

[2246]‘s condition is a rather puzzling one for he rather suddenly developed this continuous pain in his left leg.

As it grew no better and did not seem to respond to treatment his Doctor (an osteopath) Milton V. Gafney (?), D.O., of Coats-Gafney Clinic & Hospital] ordered him to the hospital for a two weeks treatment and observation. At first he had to take opiates in order to be able to get some sleep, but later only sleeping pills were sufficient. Now he has finished the two weeks stay at the Coates-Gafney Clinic (really a small hospital) and last Saturday planned to return to Mrs. Potters’ where he has a room. The Doctor seems to think that he is improved, but [2246] is not too sure of it.

As soon as he is able to arrange it he wants to return to Santa Barbara and the Doctors that we know and rely on, and to that more agreeable climate. The Osteopath first diagnosed [2246]‘s condition as a sort of PHLEBITIS, and then later changed the diagnosis to an OSTEOMYLITIS, which as I understand it is an inflammation of the outer covering of the bone. Not being a doctor I do not quite understand the language of the Reading, so as to guess which diagnosis may be more nearly correct.

Cimex Lectularius is I understand the remedy recommended as being most beneficial.

In my copy of the Reading there was no bill for the amount, but if my memory serves me correctly it used to be twenty dollars, quite possibly it is more now. At any rate I am enclosing my check to your order in the amount of twenty dollars, and trust that you will let me know if that is not the proper amount.

The oil situation in Texas now seems to be slowly developing in the deeper levels. A deep discovery well has opened up a new field about five or six miles to the southwest of us.

Which way it extends, and how far will be very important to us.

At the present time I am working for the Douglas Aircraft Co. here in …, in the Tooling Department.

They keep us very busy, and working all the over-time that we can stand. We are turning out Flying Fortresses and two or three other models.

Must close now, but I want to thank you for your kindness and promptness in giving the Reading, and also convey my kindest regards and very best wishes to you and yours, and all the the good friends that I met there.

My dear Friend:

Not until yesterday did your reading of my case reach me, but I was happy to have it. […] had written that he had requested a reading and I was very anxious to know what would come through. My physician is an osteopath and does not have the belief which your friends have in the messages which come through you as a channel. Of course it is a satisfaction to know that he is using the right treatment.

I left the hospital Saturday and while I have constant aching in my left leg, it is not as severe as it was and I believe that I am definitely improving. I am fortunate in living in a very comfortable home with a very kind and gracious landlady.

I can get no return accommodation to California for a month, so I shall try to be content here and get well.

I hope that you are all well and I thank you and […] again for your kind thought of and towards me. My kindest greetings to you and all of your household.

I am glad that you are feeling well enough to write me. I was right anxious about you when I had the wire from […]. I was not surprised at the osteopath being in a questioning manner when there was suggested something else besides osteopathy in the treatments. I do not know whether you have a homeopath around there or not. Of course you could get one in California, but it is only the homeopath that would give you the little white pills called for. I am glad to know whether the doctor agrees or not, and from what […] told me as to the doctor’s conclusion, that is what the white pills are for.

How are things looking around that country? Is there a possibility of getting another test close to the holdings there?

Do take care of yourself, and let us hear from time to time. You know we think lots of you and will be most anxious. All send our love and regards.

R4. 2/10/44 [2246]‘s ltr. to EC:

Dear Friend: [Edgar Cayce]

It was good to have your kind letter yesterday and I want to let you know that I am very much better in general health and the pain in my leg is diminishing daily.

Our very fine friend, [2091] to whom I sent a copy of your reading for me of January 18th quite thoughtfully sent me a bottle of the little white pellets, which are ‘cimex lectularius’. On it are the directions for taking. I took it to my physician at once and he not only consented but approved of my taking the pellets, so I am taking ten pellets every four hours. He had never heard of this remedy, for he, as an osteopath, is not familiar with homeopathic remedies.

However, Dr. Ross [Kenneth E. Ross, D.O.], has never given me a so-called osteopathic treatment, although I went to an osteopathic hospital here.

At first, he treated me for phlebitis, as I had it 35 and again 25 years ago, but after he had an X-ray made of my left leg, where the pain was so intense, he concluded that the bone was inflamed and treated me accordingly. There is no homeopath here or within miles of this place, so I am continuing his treatment and taking the pellets which were recommended in the reading. Between all of it, I hope to recover my former good health. I surely thank you for your part in it.

There is a chance of putting through a deal if Mrs. [2174] and Mr. [2091] can be persuaded to come down here this Spring. A new deep well just 3 1/2 miles east of us is being drilled and a fine new field has been opened up six miles southwest of us.

R5. 4/14/44 EC’s ltr. to Mrs. [2174]: ”…Yes, Dr. [2246] was pretty ill. I really was surprised at his responding so well as he seems to think he has, to the suggestions that were made. It isn’t very often that we are able to get 2 or 3 schools of medicine to work together…”

R6. 6/10/44 [2091]‘s ltr. to GD: ”…Dr. [2246] is in Texas but expects to leave shortly for Calif. He seems quite to have recovered. His friends XXXXX kidded him so much about Cimex Lectularius (Bed Bugs) that he would never have got the medicine unless I had heard of it from you and sent it to him…”

R7. 7/24/44 Mae Verhoeven’s ltr. to [2246]:

Dear Dr. [2246]:

I am taking the liberty of writing you in answer to your letter to Mr. Cayce requesting a reading for your friend, […]. As you will understand, it is impossible for Mr. Cayce to answer the many, many letters he receives daily, especially since he hasn’t been feeling very well lately. I am glad to report that he is taking a much needed vacation, beginning the latter part of this week.

Enclosed you will find a Membership blank with the date set for her reading marked at the top. Do have her complete this blank and return it to us. In preparation for this reading, please have her follow through with the following suggestions. We have a booklet called “Physical Readings,” recently compiled for the very purpose of helping the individual understand and apply the reading received. Do have her send for this booklet and study it carefully. It is listed on the enclosed Publications leaflet. About three weeks before the time for her reading, she should let us know just where she will be - exact address - during the hour set for her reading, allowing for any difference in time. She may also submit any questions she would like asked concerning her physical condition. We would also like, at that time, to have a complete and detailed report on her case. First symptoms, time element involved, treatments received, results, and her condition - up-to-date. This information is very important to our research work, and is extremely helpful to us in preparing the questions she presents. Then she should set aside the time of the reading as a quiet hour for prayer and meditation.

Most of our new appointments are being made in June of 1945. So you may see that Mr. Cayce is giving her the earliest possible date, particularly in view of his own indisposition.

Gladys and I speak of you often. Your P.S. [“I am in excellent health.”] is most gratifying, especially when such a statement comes from a friend so dear, and of such long standing. We pray that you will remain in “excellent health!”
