This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 4th day of November, 1941, in accordance with request made by the mother - Mrs. [1306], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes.

3. The cold, congestion and the effect produced upon the colon are irritating, cause temperature, anxiety of those about the body.

4. To a pint of boiling water, in a croup cup prepared to steam, put:

Oil of Eucalyptus…1/2 teaspoonful, Compound Tincture of Benzoin…1 teaspoonful, Oil of Turp…5 drops.

Let the fumes from these properties be inhaled two to three times a day, preferably having these either in the room or close to the body so that they may be inhaled.

5. Take internally the preparation as we have indicated for the body, carrying the Wild Ginger and Ginseng. This should be prepared again and taken.

6. Not too much in the diet.

7. Bathe or rub the body occasionally with rub or grain alcohol preferably, along the spine, to keep down the temperature.

8. Do that.

9. We are through for the present.

R1. 11/10/41 Mother [1306]‘s letter to EC:

“Have started several letters to you since receiving the reading but just couldn’t get them finished.

“Cousin Edgar, I know you think I’m awful and I am even worse than that, for not writing you long ago but every day since I got you last letter I’ve intended writing and simply didn’t do it. Looks like I can’t find time for anything anymore or when I do have time, simply can’t get started. I do think about you a lot and it hurts me ‘cause I’ve treated you so badly, not because I ask favors but you’re so good and kind and have done so much for me, I do love you. Please try to understand. I knew too, you wouldn’t refuse to give the reading unless you were sick or something and I DO appreciate it more than anything.

“I’ve been burning the croup cup (had to buy a small percolator to hold the pint of water) both day and nite and have rubbed him [2299] with the alcohol often. At times he’d seem better but again worse. Sunday a week ago he passed some bloody mucus - has really been going downhill for about 2 months now. I’ve been giving him Glyco and Bismuth also but since the baby [3634] came, haven’t remembered it as often as I should. Your last reading, before this one I mean, calling for the Ginseng prescription was never completed because of the prescription. I said then, I bet without the necessary medicine he would still have more trouble - I feel like that prescription almost or maybe altogether, would clear this trouble. You told me to get the druggists to write Penick and Co., so [1089] asked them to and they did, but received a letter saying they didn’t have the drugs. Howard and Southall showed [1089] the answer. They tried every other place they knew of and still couldn’t get them. I got Crawley to write Penick last Monday or was it Tuesday - the morning I got the reading anyway - I’ve called him every day including this morning and still he hasn’t heard. I don’t know what to do. [2299] just woke up - didn’t go to sleep last nite ‘til 11:00 - slept ‘til 11:00 this morning and went back to sleep with only milk and little tomato juice for breakfast and it is now 2:30 - he seems worse - strains so much for movements and suffers so much too - still passing mucus with blood in it. Called Dr. Stone [Harvey Stone, M.D.] the other day to see if he would probably give something to stop the blood until I could get the prescription - he gave me a prescription for … (alcapack [?]) something like that - he phoned the prescription for me, so I didn’t see the name but Crawley told me it was bismuth and juice from apple peelings - so far I can’t see that it’s helped. If [2299] isn’t better, suppose I’ll have to do something - [1089] said he wrote you about the prescription but didn’t say what he told you - I wanted you to know that our druggists can’t get it - I can’t understand why tho.

11 P.M.

“Had to stop and fix [2299] some milk. When he had almost finished the bottle he lost all of it - several hard pieces of milk which I’m sure was part of this morning’s bottle came up too, mixed with tomato juice. He’s been awful sick ever since. Stayed with him ‘til now. Cousin Edgar, I can never get thru thanking you - about 30 minutes after he lost his milk - the prescription you had filled for me, came. Gave him half a teaspoonful, then in about an hour he asked for some bacon. I was afraid to let him have it, but Mother said she didn’t think it would hurt him - he hasn’t had anything but milk since Saturday - hasn’t wanted to eat. Had to coax him to drink most of the milk. Mother fixed the bacon and after he had taken two small bites - he started getting white as a sheet and vomited again. He heaved so hard his little stomach went almost to his back. Still more hard curdles of milk and tomato juice in it. Of course he lost that 1/2 teaspoonful of medicine. Soon as he finished vomiting he asked for more bacon - so let him finish the biscuit sandwich - he had another bottle of milk and retained it. In about an hour and a half I gave him another half teaspoonful of the prescription - he retained that too. Soon after, I rubbed him good (he has caught a little fresh cold), took his temperature, which was 100 7/10 and put him to bed. He has awakened several times since and cried but wouldn’t, or maybe couldn’t, tell me what was wrong. He’s awfully restless now. Since he’s been asleep he’s breaking out with some sort of rash - both eyelids have swelled like big blisters and look sort of purplish - could it be the medicine or just from his stomach disorder? I have the croup cup burning now. It burns for about 2 hours with the pint of water.

“The baby [3634] is awfully restless too - have rubbed him and kept him from catching a cold so far but believe he’s on the verge of one now. He seems to be doing fine - looks like he’s gaining weight nicely. Haven’t weighed him since he was a month old. He was 4 months old today. Should he have COD LIVER OIL and ORANGE JUICE? I am using the Carnation formula, ([23] gave me for [2299]), for the baby.

“[2299]‘s cutting his stomach teeth now - one has already broken thru the gum - he has all his others.

“He has never started eating right, will eat very few things

• won’t eat oats anymore - maybe a bite or so once in a while
• I have tried him on every kind of food possible. Nothing appeals to him. He will eat vegetables when they’re in soup
• he likes to eat all the butterbeans first, then peas, potatoes, etc. I think that’s the only reason he eats them
• so he can pick out the separate vegetables and of course names each one as he puts it in his mouth.

“I’d like to go back and tell you how he’s progressed since I last wrote you but would never get thru. He [2299] kneels down, folds his hands and mumbles like he’s saying his prayers. I have a crucifix over the bed and he never goes to bed without kissing Jesus first. He’s talking quite a bit now but still makes signs too. He wants to stay outside all the time. He says, ‘out, out.’ I’d better stop and write again - have run out of diapers entirely - used the last clean one a few minutes ago so at this time o’nite gotta go do a little scrubbing - it’s 12 o’clock now but have to stay up with the croup cup anyway, so it won’t burn dry.

“Know you all miss Hugh Lynn but are also glad he is happy. I wish him all the happiness in the world. Hope you and Cousin Gertrude are well. Is she getting along pretty good or does she still suffer with her eyes? Do you feel better than you did - you never mention your own feelings.

Cousin Edgar, again, I’ll ask you to try to understand me. I don’t want to hurt you, really, I don’t - I don’t know what’s wrong with me - I wonder myself why I put little things, yet big in meaning, off so long. I could, at least write a few lines but just don’t. Please FORGIVE ME AGAIN!

R2. 3/8/42 Mother [1306]‘s letter to EC:

“Have waited so long to write you - haven’t known what to say - still don’t know - please excuse me if you can. All I have to write about are my two babies - know you would like to know all about them but seems a bore to hear nothing else. I stay home so much, that’s all I can talk about.

“I want to thank you again for having the ginseng prescription filled for me. The druggist here finally heard from Penick and Co. but they told him they didn’t have the drugs. The medicine brought him through this trouble wonderfully but he’s never been really up to par since that last sick spell. He simply won’t eat - no matter how much I try. If I happen to find something he’ll eat, after one or two feedings he’s burnt out on it - won’t eat oats - can’t find any cereal - cooked or uncooked that he’ll eat. Will eat very few vegetables. Maybe once a week he’ll eat carrots but that’s about all. He does like vegetable soup but can’t feed him that all the time. His bowel movements are still foamy and like vinegar. For the last 5 or 6 days he hasn’t eaten anything except zwieback, a few bites of Post Toasties or maybe puffed wheat and milk - a little ice cream, too. He vomited up large curdles of milk one morning last week and has vomited again this morning.

“Cousin Edgar, I’m so worried all the time about [2299]. I don’t know what to do. If only you could see one of his movements - nothing but undigested food. At nite sometimes, he’ll have a thin, thin movement, then the next morning after breakfast he’ll look like he’s constipated - the movements seem to be covered with a thin skin. I could go on and on explaining but just give up. [2299]‘s face looks fat enough but his body is terribly thin. His legs are so weak every morning that he staggers when he first walks. Then, too, he falls down just anytime during the day. Cousin Edgar, I hate to keep asking questions but could you make anymore suggestions about his bowels? I’m so afraid he’s going to be ill again. At times my brain feels like it’s burning when I sit and worry about things - [2299]‘s condition, etc.

“Wish you could see [3634] - haven’t had a single picture made of him - outrageous, isn’t it? He’s grown so fast. He will be 8 months old the 10th - sits up of course and pulls up to a standing position when holding your hands. He’s the noisiest little fellow you’ve ever seen - screams and hollers all the time. Saturday, a week ago he was awfully sick - had temperature, wouldn’t eat baby foods or drink all his milk either for 3 or 4 days, but I gave him an enema and Castoria - doctored him myself and now he seems to be alright. His stools were thin and full of green mucus. I think he must’ve had an awfully deep cold. He lost weight too, while he wasn’t eating much. I’ve been lucky with him [3634]. I haven’t had a Dr. with him since I got up after he was born.”

R3. 3/12/42 EC’s letter to mother [1306]:

“Glad to have yours of the 8th - always glad to hear from any of you, and to be sure the things closest to your heart you wish to talk about and that am always glad to hear. So don’t ever think it is boring to me for you to write about your children. It wouldn’t be just right if you didn’t talk of them and if possible for me to be of a help. Know am always glad to try and be of help. Don’t think you ever knew anyone that stays much closer in than I, save to go to S.S. on Sunday morning. Rarely do I ever get outside my own yard. True, I have lots of people coming in to see me almost daily. That is my contact with the outside world, with quite a bit of correspondence to do each day, so all I know to talk about is my own work or what I hear on the radio from day to day - and all that is so bad, one doesn’t like to even think about that - with so many boys that feel so close to already in the combat zones and our own boy soon to be in same possibly - well, isn’t pretty to think about - so to think of and plan for those who are to be the hope of the world is the kind of diversion that I like to have. So you may know any word from you and your boys is a real help and relief to me.

“You will have to add the various vegetables to his soup - that may soon turn him against soup. But there are many children like him that have to be coaxed to eat anytime, so will just have to nurse him along - nothing much better than the Milk of Bismuth and the Lactated Pepsin, but would keep a few drops of Glyco in his water. Give a few drops, even two in practically all the water he drinks, save that he drinks with his meals. Take warm Glyco and massage it across his bowels once a day. That too, will help keep inflammation down as well as the massage will help get the gastric juices working properly. Don’t fail to give him an enema every now and then. Once a week or oftener if there is much straining at the time of the stool and especially if it stays sour and foamy.

“Can you get Peanut Oil there? If not, have your druggist to order you some from Planters Peanut Co., Suffolk, Va. Use that to rub him with after his bath. Rub him all over with it. Get you some Witch Hazel and mix with the Peanut Oil equal proportions. Keep this in a separate bottle so you can shake together, for they don’t mix any too well. Think he will like this once you get him started and will help him as he will absorb much of each of these. They are pleasant to apply.

“So you call the baby [3634] or is his name Jack and you just call him [3634]? Glad he keeps well. Hope you have no trouble with him.

“Of course he will be just opposite of [2299], and the noisier they are, the better they will grow. Let’s hope you don’t ever have to have a Dr. with [3634]. Sure would like to see all of you.

“Glad you have the bed for [3634]. Hope it is just what you wanted and am sure he will be very proud of it - know just what you mean. H. L. slept on a chair for nearly nine months.

“Hope everything works out well for […] [your husband] and that the place proves just that he likes and that it will supply your needs alright.

“Just keep on trying and praying and living like you pray. The supply comes from HIM and will work out just as you use it to His Glory and not for self. You have the Hope of the world in your boys - the old folks that are here have set their fate in the way they have acted, so God has given you two precious souls that may be the channels for the saving grace of the world after this war - while it may be severe, it won’t go on forever and there will be a need of Godly men to carry on, so it is up to you and […] [husband] to so live and instill that faith in those boys as will be the hope of the world - for it is only in HIM - Christ Jesus. But I don’t have to commence preaching at you, am sure.

“Have had only one short note from [1089] - like many of us a good procrastinator. Hope he is coming along fine.

“Many have responded about the prayer. Some very lovely experiences have been had by many, am sure from their reports. Let’s hope it helps a bit - only as we stay close to GOD may we keep the aggressor from our doors.

“Yes, [1352] told me of Mrs. […] [your grandmother’s] passing - what a wonderful life she must have had - many disappointments, am sure - yet, many blessings also.

“I and Gertrude both have had very bad colds. Maybe I was the worst off, don’t know. Anyway, I had to have the Dr. with me for several days - came near having pneumonia, but feeling some better now. In fact, guess I feel as well as I ever do. You better take a round of the baby’s Castoria. If you will take just a spoonful every hour until you take a whole bottle, it will stir your liver, as possibly nothing else will. Then the next day after it acts, take two teaspoonsful of Sal Hepatica and you will feel lots better the next day. Try it.

“Thanks for the picture. He looks mighty cute, but doesn’t look as well as he does in the other picture you sent me some time ago.

“Write whenever you can, [1306]. I know how busy you keep and, too, how one feels as if they have nothing to say even if they had time to write. Or maybe it is like an expression Uncle Lucien [Lucien Cayce] used to have when he was a young man. He used to say “well, just haven’t anything fitten to say.”

“Thanks a lot for your letter. Try the suggestions for yourself as well as for [2299]. Think they will help…”

R4. 7/29/43 Mother [1306]‘s letter to EC:

“You’ll be surprised to hear from me until you read further, then you’ll say uh-huh. Yes, you were right in saying what you did about my writing when I wanted something. However, I’ve wanted for months to write you about [2299] but, sincerely, have been ashamed to do so. I’ve been terrible and am sorry but that doesn’t improve matters any. It isn’t fair, but I’ve kept up with you thru the rest of the family’s correspondence - some sponging, isn’t it? I always read [1352]‘s pamphlets, etc. she gets from the association - they’re always interesting to me. The comments on your biography were nice, too - I read about 350 pages of the book in three nites and my eyes bothered me, so I had to stop and haven’t gotten to it again. We’ve discussed the book lots, trying to understand facts that are over our heads. Later, when it isn’t so hot and I’m not quite so busy, I intend finishing the book - the latter half takes quite a bit of thought as you read, too.

“I’m sorry you had to lose Hugh Lynn. He was so helpful and important in your work - know he couldn’t be replaced. Sometime soon we hope the war will be over and our boys will be back with us. My husband hasn’t as yet, been called. He’s working at the shipyards in Evansville - comes home most every weekend.

“I think Hugh Lynn’s baby is cute as pie. He looks like you, too - would like to have a picture of the other grandbaby, too. Know you are proud of both of them - don’t know what mother and the rest would do without my two around. Dry up I expect!

“Suppose you know [1089]‘s now at sea. He’s on patrol craft

• seems to be satisfied - got a nice long letter from him today.

“[1352] has been suffering from violent headaches occasionally and has vomiting spells that cause her to heave something terrible. She weighed 120 pounds when she came home from Chicago and now weighs 113 - seems to eat sufficiently but isn’t gaining any.

“Cousin Edgar, I know from your letter to [1352] about your readings being booked up to October - (know you’re dated even later now) that you really have more than you’re physically able to handle, but mother keeps after me to write you about [2299]. I know he isn’t well at all but keep thinking maybe he’ll get better and I really and truly hate to ask anymore favors of you - you’ve done so very much for me now and I’ve been outwardly, so ungrateful - you do know, tho, I do appreciate, more than I can ever show, everything you’ve done for both [2299] and myself. Mother’s right - if something isn’t done for [2299] while he’s still young, he’ll never be able to even go to school.

“For months [2299] has been, if anything, going down instead of progressing. He has headaches quite often, and speaks of his arms and legs aching ever so often - has cough all the time, too. Bowels still move 4 or 5 times a day most of the time - his arms and legs are so very thin. I’ve always been afraid he’d have infantile paralysis or something like that

• you can count all his ribs - he weighs only 29 pounds and will be 4 years old in November - he has weighed more, too - I don’t know exactly what. He’s so nervous, it’s pathetic. I know what I’ve said sounds like he’s almost beyond going but he seems to have plenty of energy - stops at times while he’s busy playing and complains of something hurting him and he does look ill. Instead of playing with other children he runs in when they start towards our house and if he gets hemmed in by anybody, he usually starts a sort of nervous crying and chewing on his fingers. I don’t think he’s very timid - it’s mostly nerves. Know you don’t have time to read such lengthy letters but did want you to know how much I want a reading for him and why I want it. I don’t think there’s any other way of helping him. The readings are so right - no guesswork.

“[3634] has been such a healthy little fellow until week before last, when both [2299] and [3634] were sick - had temperatures (which I know was helped from using grain alcohol from the base of the brain down the spine) - and I think the trouble was caused probably from something they’d eaten - it took a week to get [3634]‘s bowels really open and then his movements became like [2299]‘s - greasy and undigested. In the last day or so I’ve noticed there isn’t quite so much oil so hope they will gradually get normal again. I’ve wondered and wondered what caused that particular trouble. It’s so strange that [3634]‘s would develop into the same thing.

“Please, Cousin Edgar, I don’t want you to place [2299]‘s reading ahead of anyone else’s but would like to have it booked as other’s are. It’s, of course, my fault because I waited and put off so long writing you. Am enclosing a $20.00 money order - it looks funny after having so many, many readings and not sending a cent but have that little and want to send it.

“Know you and Cousin Gertrude can’t be very well in this hot weather when you are so overworked but do hope you take good care of yourselves. Don’t rush about writing me - your promptness always makes me feel even “crummier.” I wish I were in a position to come help out some - there’s nothing I’d like better. Remember, no hurry to write me.”

“P.S. Am enclosing a page of questions - change or cross out what you think aren’t necessary.

“Questions for [2299]‘s readings:

1. What causes frequent coughing - could same go into tuberculosis?
2. Are the arms and legs undeveloped in proportion to the rest of the body? If so, how can they be developed accordingly?
3. What causes extreme nervousness and how can this condition be overcome?
4. What causes frequent headaches and occasional aching of arms and legs?
5. Are there any special foods, vitamin tablets or other forms of nourishment the body could assimilate that would help development?”
