This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 23rd day of August, 1940, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [2329], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Miss [1749].

Born November 2, 1898, 5:45 P. M., in Muncie, Indiana. Time of Reading 3:35 to 4:20 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: (In going back over years from the present - ” - ‘34 - quite unusual happenings - ‘30 - ‘18 - yes - changes - ” etc., on back to birth date.)

3. Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [2329].

4. In giving the interpretations of the records that are written upon the skein of time and space, these are the forces and influences that each soul builds in its passing through time and space. Thus they become a part of that which the entity must meet in all phases of its activity.

5. That which is in keeping with the law of Creative Forces, or energies, is developing. That which is of self, self-aggrandizement, self-indulgence alone, is retarding.

6. These then are the lines that create what some call karma. Hence meeting them is the law. For, what ye sow, so shall ye reap. But as has been interpreted by the entity in much of its study, its analysis of the atonement, or at-onement with Creative Forces, - being the law, one meets or overcomes. But such overcoming must be a continuous practice in the daily experiences with others.

7. Then, in choosing that as we would give here, from the akashic records, - these are chosen with the desire and purpose that this may be a helpful experience for the entity; thus enabling the entity to apply self in such measures or manners as to magnify the virtues and minimize the faults or vices.

8. As to urges that arise from astrological aspects, - these have been and are most null and void in the present experience of the entity. These, as urges, have become materialized experiences through the great number of sojourns of the entity seeking to give expression in this material plane.

9. That there has been great advancements through various sojourns, and great retardments in others, is apparent in the urges latent in the emotional influences of the body. However, there should not be judgements other than as of the spiritual nature or value; and not as to anyone’s moral code, but as to purposes of same.

10. Know that the birthright of every soul is choice, or will.

11. Choosing then to do that which is to self an expression of Creative Force, or love, may to the entity become a stumbling-stone in the experience or the lives of others; and yet to the entity a NATURAL PHYSICAL emotion or expression of a spiritual law, a spiritual desire.

12. This may be hard for some to interpret, - but it has become a natural thing for the entity because of its experiences not only in this sojourn but in others; yet the entity must adhere to that which is the ideal. For, that is the way and the truth and the light.

13. What, then, is thy ideal, - in spiritual relationships, in mental attitudes and aptitudes, and in physical relationships? Are they ever creative and constructive in the experience of self and of others? Or is there the greater intent or thought as to the satisfying, gratifying of self’s emotions? There may be the creating or expressing of that universal urge arising from Venus, which is a greater part of the internal or astrological urge; this bringing those expressions of love in all its forms, in its natures, in its friendships, in its beauties. For, it does bring the appreciations of beauty, - whether innately or manifestedly, - as in a sunset, as in the relationships to others as friendships. Whatever may be the form of art or beauty, these are a part of the entity’s INDIVIDUALITY, as oft in its personality; but the expressions of same in the personality are not always understood. For, oft has been the sojourn of the entity in that environ of Venus, as also Uranus; making that innate expression or desire in things of the occult or mysterious or oriental nature, that are a part of the conscious experience from material sojourns. Also it makes for the extreme; becoming very cold and again very emotional, yet able to justify self through its reasoning forces.

14. These as we find are the latent forces within the experience of this entity.

15. As to sojourns in the earth, - these have been oft. Not all are indicated as being a part of the urge in the immediate, but these are given to indicate those problems, those confusions that have arisen, do arise in the experience of the entity in this present sojourn:

16. Before this the entity was in the land of the present nativity, during those early periods when there were the attempts of groups or individuals to bring into the land those who would aid the men to establish homes, and to bring into being those purposes that were of the nature as to be home building in its broader and greater and better sense.

17. The entity was among those who were brought to be bartered; and thus not well chosen as to one with whom the entity would keep the activities in relationships to such. Yet, because of those purposes which arose in the experience, there came about a contentment that was in keeping with the better forces; and it may be said that the entity gained throughout that sojourn, - as Anna Bede.

18. In the experience the entity sought rather for the ability to impress individuals as to its abilities as the homemaker; thus was not in that position of having the home that was kept as a faithful home, but it was not on the part of the entity that there were those associations kept with others.

19. This brought determinations, sorrows, and the eventual breaking of vows. These as we find brought to the entity the material gains, mental anguish, and spiritual confusion.

20. In the present we may find periods when much of self’s confusion arises from the EMOTIONAL natures of the entity.

21. Before that the entity was among those who lived in the earth during the periods known as the Holy Wars, when the French and Spanish lands were under those aptitudes or activities in which many of the men were taken, or left their homes.

22. The entity was among those doubted by the companion, and was forced to wear a stay that prevented conception, or liaison with others. This brought periods of disturbing forces of many natures; the determining to sometime, somewhere, be free, and to “get even.”

23. Hence we find in the present experience of the entity the determinations that may run in quite different directions, - the holding to an ideal irrespective of what others may say or do, or as to what conflicts such might bring to the mental body.

24. The name then was Suzane Marceileu; and in the experience the entity gained, the entity lost. For, the forcing to remain in a state of chastity brought detrimental determinations to the entity.

25. That these have and do become portions of the entity’s experience, then, is only the meeting of self.

26. Before that the entity was in the Promised Land, but NOT of those peoples ordinarily thought of or determined as being the natives of the land during that particular sojourn. For, the entity was among those of the Grecian land who journeyed there with those who were of the faith and sect known as the Nazarenes. Not those who later became followers of Jesus of Nazareth, but those that held to the needs for the GRATIFYING of the bodily forces that there might be the greater expression in the material as well as the spiritual relationships. For, literal were the concepts of that sect as to doing to others as others would do to you; not as ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them. It was a confusion of the same.

27. In the experience the entity gained when coming under the teachings of Philip and some of the rest of those who had been put in charge of the visitors to the Holy City.

28. Hence the entity rose to one thought of, as it might be said, as the head of the early churches, or the counselor for many of those groups who were the heads of the early churches; being ESPECIALLY active in Laodicea.

29. Then the name was Lydias.

30. Before that the entity was in the Persian land, when there were those turmoils which arose through the activities of the nomad land, or when the ‘city in the hills and the plains’ was established.

31. The entity then was among the leaders of those groups and peoples who were the rulers of the land, but of the household of same sex as in the present and coming under the teachings of that leader in the ‘city in the hills’ the entity became a teacher, an artist, a depicter of manners, means and ways of giving expression to the activities of various groups.

32. Thus the entity was a character writer, one that today would be called a script writer, or writer of caricatures or drawings of those things that would show to other individuals the activity intended to be portrayed in all phases of the relationships of individuals, - as to the home, as to liaisons, as to all natures or characters and manners in which love would be made, materially, spiritually, and in the manners of healing, - as of colors and music.

33. The name then was Su-Bel-Dum.

34. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land during the period of turmoil and strife.

35. The entity was among the daughters of the High Priest who was sent into exile; the entity then being very close to the Priest in those activities which brought about the banishment, encouraging the Priest in the associations with those individuals for which the King and the Counselors banished the Priest.

36. These brought turmoils for the entity, yet with the return of the Priest to authority, and the establishing of the Temple of Sacrifice and Temple Beautiful, the entity was active in both of these.

37. Hence a judgement of individual characterization is a portion of the entity’s experience in the present.

38. The name then was Aris-Hobeth.

39. As to the abilities of the entity in the present:

40. First, as indicated, know thy ideals, - in spirit, in mental, in physical. Not so much what others would be to thee, but what ye would manifest as thy ideal in every phase of experience.

41. In the fields of service pertaining to art, artistic abilities, the directing of others and the like, are the fields of service in which there may be rendered the GREATER service, and in which greater happiness and hope may be found.

42. Let not thy good be evilspoken of, and let not thy faith waver in the ways ye choose.

44. (Q) What should I do to prepare myself for my life work? (A) Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman not ashamed; rightly dividing the words of truth, and keeping self from self-condemnation.

45. (Q) Why do I suffer acutely at times from a sense of frustration? (A) This is partly physical, partly the karmic and the FORM of the ideas in relationship to the real ideals of the entity.

46. (Q) What are my obligations to my husband? (A) These have been as problems ye have worked out together before. It was this companion who forced thee to be in that relationship during those periods of his journeys in other lands, - which has brought to thee the OPPORTUNITY for the meeting of same in the present.

47. (Q) How can I control great sensitivity of my emotional body? (A) By bringing into the experiences of others, in little ways, that which is creative; that is, encourage those who have lost hope in spiritual ways. Give advice and counsel in the mental that brings hope, help and love in the experience of others.

48. (Q) What are my obligations to the man who has recently returned in my life? and how should I conduct myself for our mutual development? (A) Keep self unspotted from the world. As to what the conduct should be, let it never be for only emotional satisfaction - but creative in its nature.

49. (Q) Through my meditation, has the kundalini fire risen to the head or top of spine at base of skull? If so, was it because of sex abstinence and discipline that this happened? (A) It has risen at TIMES, but has not remained; else there would NOT be those periods of confusion. For, when this has arisen - and is disseminated properly through the seven centers of the body, it has purified the body from all desire of sex relationships. For, THIS IS an outlet through which one may attain to celibacy - through this activity. That it has NOT REMAINED indicates changes.

50. (Q) Since my husband has been impotent these many years, would sexual relationship with some trusted friend (a bachelor) help me so I can function positively and rhythmically in carrying on the normal business of home life and work? Please advise me in regard to such. (A) Such questions as these can only be answered in what is thy ideal. Do not have an ideal and not attempt to reach same. There is no condemnation in those who DO such for helpful forces, but if for personal, selfish gratification, it is sin.]

R1. 9/5/40 [2329]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce -

Thank you so much for the VERY helpful Life Reading. I’ve read it over & over and much is made clear to me. As you say, at first reading one can not get all the implications, but gradually it reveals itself. I wanted the exact Karmic tie between this other man & myself & I did not get it because I suppose I did not word it rightly. I said “what were my obligations” to him instead of what is the “karmic tie.”

I am enclosing $10.00 for a physical reading as I feel I need it very much. It is up to me to handle myself emotionally. I know & I can in time - but in the mean time I need help & have to repair the body.

I’ll try to give my needs as I see it, but I may be wrong & I hope my suggestions will not deter any suggestions more pertinent to the need that may come thru. That is, I do not want to set aside or influence more needed suggestions by any thing I have to say.

1. The nerves are in bad shape.
2. At times have an active thyroid.
3. At times a high pulse & dizziness.
4. Fatigue easily.
5. Rather anemic.
6. Skin dry. Underneath fatty tissue very deficient. THIS IS IMPORTANT for I feel it must be REBUILT for nerve and protection. Also hurts my vanity!!
7. But, I’m not what would be termed underweight.
8. The peripheral veins are quite blue & have a tendency to “break.” Bruise very easily & takes along time to heal. Any cut heals slowly.
9. Arteries or large veins in legs back of knees, right leg particularly, trouble me. Had leg bandaged last winter from a pull of some sort in vein or ligament or something back of right knee. Drs. were vague.
10. One Dr. thinks I need Estrogen because of need to supply some feminine glandular deficiency. Said in view of my unnormal sex life it may cause more desire, but felt I needed it for the body to rebuild.
11. I have had to take calcium quite frequently the last 4 or 5 years. It always seems to help. Particularly the gas in lower left bowels.
12. Frequently have diarrhea, or loose bowels. Then again a little tightness.
13. Have stiff neck & pains over my right shoulder blade. Pretty painful at times.
14. Sleep is poor. All winter had to take a little something frequently to relax so I could get to sleep. Of course, my active brain is back of this plus worry & trying to work things out.
15. Have congestion is head - mostly eyes & nose. Use to have hay fever but calcium treatment overcame this 4 summers ago. Congestion returned this summer because of this terrific emotional upset.
16. For years have had a congested spot in bronchial on right side. Almost in location of just end of breastbone. I think lungs are alright.
17. I hold acidity pretty much in check by diet.
18. Can’t seem to take any milk without getting mucus in nose and throat.

Well, this all seems like a list of trifles, but very wearing, and they seem to be getting worse instead of getting better.

I’m anxious to get my body under control & fixed up because alas, this restriction & frustration manifesting in so many ways, not only sexually, seems to be for some duration from astrological set-up.

My astrologer warmed me of possible kidney trouble & infection in Nov. thru Jan 1st. Said for me not to have any meat other than little chicken at that time - Well, forewarned is forearmed!

I have a Doctor here [Christoph U. Linder, M.D.], one trained in Rudolph Steiner [Rudolf Steiner] methods, who is very fine & I believe will co-operate in every way. I can’t take drastic medicines & his are refined & suited to my needs. He knows my case thoroughly. He cured the hay fever 4 summers ago. You see he takes into consideration the subtle bodies & their conditions. I’m sure he would be interested to co-operate.

Again let me thank you - and if you could answer the question of the Karmic tie between this other man & myself I would appreciate it. Your reading gave me REAL help in regard to the tie between my husband and myself.

Dear Mr. Cayce -

Thank you for your note and I am confirming the date of Tues. the 17th at 3:30 to 4:30 E.S.T. I will be at my home, … Pl., N.Y.C.

If you get the Karmic relationship with this other man & how I should handle it to pay back any obligations, if there are any, to him, please put it on a separate sheet as you did before in regard to this deep present problem.

You are very kind - and I am getting hold of myself much better since the 1st reading. It is terribly irksome to be so INERT & get so little accomplished - I am trying to get my Fall & winter activities lined up so that I will have definite responsibilities of a mental as well as physical nature, for I believe service & preparing for better service is the great cure-all.

With such a confused emotional state as I’ve had for a year, it was extremely hard to push myself to do the jobs even on hand for service. Now this is clearing up. Thanks to you. When one feels sorry for themselves, that is self-pity, the ship is foundering & this MUST NOT BE.

Dear Mr. Cayce -

In my last letter of the 10th I believe confirming the 17th date 3:30 to 4:30 E.S.T. I stupidly forgot to speak of a pain I’ve had off an on in my neck, the back of it toward right side & extending under the right shoulder blade. All during August it was quite painful. I’d bake it in the sun & get better & now it is just there, sort of dull. The reason I speak of it is because I don’t want a neuritic condition to start up & get chronic. However, I have my suspicions that it is a reflex action of the throat center of the distress sometimes felt in the sacral center which in time will past and IS better.

Sometimes I have great distress around the heart - but think it is only nerves. I THINK my heart organically is sound. The Vagus nerve upon GROUP disturbance gave me great trouble the last two years. It’s my extreme sensitivity I suspect - and my subjective union with a small group of disciples I am associated with.

I thought I’d better speak of these being part & parcel of the general physical condition. I hope this letter reaches you in time for your work on the physical reading [5/17/40 See 2329-2, a Physical Reading.]

LONDON (UPI) - Probably the only manufacturer of chastity belts in the world, the firm of Anne Hugessen, has been placed into liquidation by its creditors.

Officials said the company’s failure has nothing to do with the permissive society.

Although some of the belts can in fact be used for the purpose for which they were designed in medieval times, Hugessen’s belts were normally used as ice bucket and plant holders.

A spokesman for the firm, situated in Halstead, Essex, said that Prince Charles bought two belts last year to use as toilet roll holders.

B1. 8/15/40 Mrs. [2329]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce -

I have had a number of people speak to me of your remarkable and precise work, among them was Miss [1749] of this city. I believe she said your charge for a physical diagnosis is $10.00 which I am enclosing in this letter. If I am not correct on this, will you please let me know?

I do not know if you wish a bit of history or not and I cannot check up as Miss [1749] is out of town. There has been a long history of emotional tension which I have more or less taken care of thru meditation. One aspect of the tension is due to 18 years of married life with no physical connection with my husband. He has always been impotent thru no fault of his. There is simply not the physical development necessary. I do not think it necessary to go into the reasons why I stayed with him all these years. There was a few laisons [liaisons] on my part at first until I found the Arcane School & received its very fine instructions in meditation.

I got along very well, considering, until a former suitor came precipitately into my life last Fall. He is now married (nearly 10 years). From the minute we met again, the flame came back to him in its full intensity, AND I responded. I am trying to release us - but I find my health going down as it was before I found the School. WHAT CAN I DO FOR MYSELF TO BUILD MYSELF UP - ? I SEEK TO KEEP VERY BUSY. One doctor said since the periphery veins on my legs showed a tendency to “breaking,” I needed the female hormone Estrogen (I believe that is the name). I fear to take it in case it would increase my feminine desire. I have had to take calcium frequently and it has been helpful. Sometimes the thyroid gland is a bit overactive when I am transmutting the sex energy very fast in mental work.

I do not know, but I believe the Kundalini fire at the base of the spine has mounted to the base of the skull. There has been three distinct raisings, each time higher. The School forbids any tampering with this and I have not done so. I do not know if this is due in part to sexual abstinence or not. THIS IS A QUESTION I WOULD LIKE ANSWERED.

I think you will know thru your own investigation the particular type of psychic & mental sensitivity I have. Part of my problem is my extreme sensitivity to this man’s desire and thots. He has tried to discipline himself here because he has learned how disastrous it is for me. I would not hesitate to have a lasion [liaison] if he was NOT married. I would not leave my husband for a number of reasons which you may see, and also, he has evolved into a very beautiful character.

Perhaps my desire for this man is not love - but due to the peculiar circumstances of married life. However, he also is a fine person. He loved me from childhood and I did not know it (his mother told me that also). He did not let me know until he was able to support a wife. It was too late then, for I had just returned home to announce my engagement to my husband. Peculiar circumstances all along, which spell karma to me, seem to have dogged our three lives.

I did see him intimately at intervals because for one reason he was going to pieces - another, I thot it would cure him of his desire - a sort of psychological sub-conscious cleansing. I knew I had figured in all his childhood dreams & fantasys & they had lain deep & dormant all these years & I felt if the dreams could be actually experienced or faced he would be cured. It only made him capable of standing the situation better. I broke it off for I did not wish to “two-time” his wife. - Perhaps in time we both can acquiesce to the situation better.

However, in the mean time, I feel I need some physical help - nerves mostly.

My husband knows I am asking you for help - but HE DOES NOT know the situation. He is accustomed to me being a bit ailing at times. Therefore will you give the MEDICAL ADVICE ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER. If you have any other comments to make I can have them PRIVATELY & he can then see the medical aid (if you prescribe any).

Perhaps you can see that abstinence for a while longer is needed to accomplish some sort of spiritual endorsement for my work in later years of this life. I do not know - I have, all these years, simply sought to do what seemed right at each point of crisis. At times the burden has been very great. And to tell you the truth I haven’t an awful lot of courage left!

If you honestly believe what I need is a “life reading” I will get that - but I find knowing too far in advance things that you must emotionally face, has its drawbacks! Therefore, I have hesitated to order a “life reading”.

I smoke - I find it relieves nervous tension - also a psychic hunger. The latter was unnoticeable after I began to learn the technique of handling my energies & meditation - but now it is very noticeable. I eat in small amounts & rather frequently, as I handle food best this way. I eat some meats

• hardly any beef. I know health-foods & use them always. Can take very little milk as it seems to make mucous. I take few eggs (too acid forming) - use a good deal of cheese & cottage cheese & butter - some cream. NO condiments. Have spells of wanting candy - but otherwise use very little sugar & that is BROWN or honey.

My particular talent seems to be psychological work & next music. Do too much of the psychological work to give time to music - & besides I have very little craving for it in later years. I walk a great deal - very active & rapid in movement. Love to dance. However, I’ve learned to conserve my energy in not too rapid & jerky movements. Try to plan -

We have a happy home & people like to come to it! My husband works very hard, but loves his work & is very creative in it. He treats me with every consideration & loving tenderness - but there were years of terrible adjustment.

I hope I have not gone into too much detail for your needs - But I did not know your requirements. May I hear from you at your earliest convenience?

B2. 8/17/40 EC’s letter to Mrs. [2329]:

Have yours of the 15th - and sincerely trust we may be of a service or help. Thank you for giving some detail as to your problems, but as not quite sure myself as to just which type of reading you should have - am sending data relative to the work, and the Life reading data - also a case report that you may see just what each is like. Realize your health and your problems are so interwoven, the information may partake of each. We find times when the information seem to take all conditions in to consideration and give the information needed, regardless of the suggestion - yet we know all information is shaded or governed by the suggestion. So would suggest you read data over - then if you wish to write me again before having the reading, please feel free to do so.

Am making the appointment for the afternoon of the 23rd - 3.30 to 4.30 E.S.T. that will be 4.30 to 5.30 Daylight time. We have to know just where you are for the Physical - Name given at birth, and place of birth for the Life - or the Mental - and Spiritual, which usually takes partial physical with same - for the information accepts the body thusly. B3. 8/20/40 Mrs. [2329]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce - Thank you for your kind letter which I received this morning. I have read the sample case histories of both the Life & Physical Readings. I rather believe that the Life Reading is needed because probably much would be explained in that to me which would shed light on the WHYS & WHEREFORES of my life conditions. And also I am of the belief that about 90% of our physical ailments spring from emotional stresses and strains and when once seen in their proper light in acquiesce & am able to handle emotions better.

If I am of the opinion that I should need also the physical reading afterwards, could I get it for ten dollars? I ask this because I would have to take it out of my house money & save it up since I would most likely not be able to show my husband the Life reading. Rightly or wrongly, I have tried to not give him worry in any way about our life together since he has tried so hard to do his part these last few years. Therefore more than likely I should have to ask for the Physical reading soon after the Life reading in order to show him something for his 20 dollars. I think you will understand.

I know this, that I can’t go on any longer under the present conditions. I must have some clear vision & a focussed point of endeavor - I have a large goal, a sort of life goal, but the small nearer goals must be clearer. Furthermore, perhaps a physical reading would give me help that would make me stronger, aid me in handling myself.

QUESTIONS -

1. I want to know what my life work is - how my energies are to be utilized?
2. I want to know what I should do to prepare myself.
3. I suffer acutely at times from a sense of frustration. Will the above questions aid me in overcoming this.
4. What are my obligations to my husband & to this man who has recently returned in my life.
5. Would a liaison with some trusted friend help me so I could function positively & rhythmically in carrying on the normal business of home life & work? A bachelor.
6. I’m not particularly interested in #4 unless it could be with this man but I hesitate because he has a wife & I LIKE her. I don’t want to disturb her. Society is against it & from HER point of view it would be wrong if she ever knew it. I don’t want to hurt anyone. This man does not dislike her. I believe, though she gets any thing she wishes by making fun of him or nagging over weeks at a stretch. She does not hesitate to belittle him in public - but she does have some good qualities. She cannot have children.
7. Please give me some information if the kundalini fire has risen to the head or top of spine at base of skull as I think it has? I do not want to harbour any false illusions. If so, was it because of sex abstinence & discipline that this happened?
8. I know the emotional body has great sensitivity. How can I control this?
