This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 27th day of October, 1940, in accordance with request made by the sister - Miss [813], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Marshall Time of Reading Sanitarium, 11:15 to 11:25 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. Linden Avenue, Troy, New York.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2387].

3. As we find, there are very serious disturbances. These have continued to grow worse, owing to the pressures produced by the uremic poisonings.

4. In the beginning, as we find, these arose from the general nervous collapse; that is, the physical forces reached that condition where there was a breakdown, due to the absence of those vital energies to create the normal reactions along the cerebrospinal system, with the coordination of cerebrospinal and sympathetic.

5. Hence we have a physical and a mental collapse, - and an incoordination arising especially through the activities in the 9th dorsal area.

6. As we find, the greater help might be obtained by the application of Turpentine Stupes over the kidney area, as well as over the pubic center to assist in draining the bladder. We would apply these stupes for at least an hour, then rest about an hour, then apply again, and so on. The proportions would be about four ounces of Turpentine to a gallon of water. Wring the cloths out of this and apply across the back as well as across the abdomen low down, so that the action is to drain the bladder.

7. The continued use of catheter will be very detrimental.

8. Unless something is done soon, the pressures produced upon the brain forces, causing the vital energies to continue to be used up, will produce the convulsions that will rupture the brain centers; and thus cause a condition of separation.

9. Every fifteen to twenty minutes give a teaspoonful of Beef Juice, and let this just be sipped if possible. Every third day give a teaspoonful of beef juice AND a teaspoonful of wine, these alternated, you see.

10. If the body responds - after there has been some reaction - begin massaging the body from the base of brain to the end of the spine. This may not be given until after there has been some reaction.

11. These offer the hope; though as we find, if the condition remains much longer as it now is we will have hemorrhages in the brain - from this nerve pressure.

R1. 11/3/40 Sister [813]‘s letter to EC:

My dear Mr. Cayce:

I could write you quite a story about my efforts to get two so-called specialists to give your treatment to my brother [2387] instead of their own! But my determination won and Monday morning - or noon rather - they agreed to humor me and apply the treatment prescribed in the reading - at least for a few days.

When I first called at the sanitarium on Monday noon he looked very close to death, to me, but I don’t believe the doctors realized he was so ill. He had no special nurses, was being fed by force through the nostril, had been catheterized for 15 days, and had been so violent they had put him in a room with very little furniture. That is to say, he walked the floor all night and shouted part of the time that he was crazy. I don’t know all the details and I haven’t asked.

His skin had that dehydrated look that goes with extreme weakness. I ordered two nurses - one for daytime and one for night duty, and the doctors agreed to give the turpentine stupes a try. From the time we applied the stupes on Monday noon, until the present time, the catheter has not been used.

There seems to be no distention of the bladder now. He voids a couple of times each day and sometimes once or twice in the night. This has been a wonderful relief to us. He has been taking nourishment very well. He eats three meals a day most of the time but the nurse has to coax him to eat it. And at odd times she gives him orange juice, tomato juice, water, etc. At my request for more concentrated vitamins that his diet contained, the doctor ordered some codliver oil capsules and he is now taking two each day of these.

Alas for the special beef juice! It completely slipped my mind, in all this anxious time, that the beef juice should be made after a special formulae! Miss Davis asked me, when she called me long distance, if I knew how to make it. I told her that likely the sanitarium did and had it in mind at that time that the directions would be given when the “reading” was mailed. But the directions were not with the reading and when I told the doctor about the treatment I merely said “beef juice” every 15 or 20 minutes. The doctor ordered the prepared beef extract that is usually used. Today I suddenly remembered that there was a special way to make this and I called you by phone at once.

The beef juice has not been given to him nearly as often as that as it is sometimes impossible to get him to swallow the juice. He hates it and fights against it often. A long way from “sipping” it. But sometimes the nurse slips it in his mouth and he takes it all right. Sometimes perhaps no more than four spoonfuls in a morning have been given. Of course when he is sleeping he does not have it. How much he has really had I don’t know, but not every 15 minutes that is certain. We got him some sherry wine and he had that the third day as ordered. Today is the next “third day” and I reminded the nurse that it was due this afternoon. I am preparing the beef right away and will take it to him the first thing tomorrow morning.

He is quieter than he was, the bladder condition is much better, and he seems to be a little stronger. His skin has lost that dehydrated look. But his mind is hopelessly confused. He seems to have lost his identity and asked me today who he looked like and who he was! Tuesday night he slept four hours and Wednesday night he slept six hours straight. Thursday he had improved quite a little. But Thursday night, for no reason that we know, his thoughts were terrible. He thought there was ground glass in his supper and would not eat anything. Then he was restless and paced the floor all night. He didn’t sleep at all, he would not lie down, and in the morning he took no breakfast. So when I got there about 12 o’clock on Friday noon he certainly looked terrible. His face was haggard and his mind was worse. But he ate his dinner and slept an hour in the afternoon and that evening the doctor gave him sleeping medicine and he slept for several hours. Yesterday, Saturday, he was better because he had slept, even though it was medicated sleep. Of course that terrible night and morning that he went without scarcely any nourishment and was in perpetual motion, must have worn his failing energies to a frazzle. Yesterday he ate his food and was quiet in bed most of the time. Today I called to see him and he was about the same mentally but his eyes looked very tired. They seemed to indicate that he is very weak.

The doctors have reached no conclusion about his case so far. They do not agree. I am sure that the “information” has given the right diagnosis as it fits with the facts as I know them. But there is one thing that I am not certain of: the doctors say there is no uremic poisoning. Uremic poisoning is very easy to detect and they have made a test. They say there is no poisoning. I am wondering if the information did not really mean uremic poisoning as the doctor understands it but rather means that the retention of the urine in [2387]‘s system was causing some of the pressure on the nerves of the brain?

His mental condition has not cleared much. It has a little in that he does not resist his nurses so much. The “resisting” is a symptom. He is quieter and occasionally his eyes look clearer. The stupes seem to have done the trick by draining the bladder so that the catheter has not been used.

That is as exact a report as I can make of what has taken place this past week. The doctors declare there is no uremic poisoning. I don’t know whether there is or is not, as I wrote in the foregoing.

I thought if I explained the entire situation whoever helps with the reading will know what questions to ask at the end of Tuesday’s reading - which you said you could give him. Here are some of the things I would like to know:

What is his physical condition at the present time? That is to say, is there now a pressure upon the brain forces which is causing the vital energies to be used up? What is causing this pressure (if it exists)? Is the patient stronger?

Has there been a reaction so that the body can now be massaged along the spine as directed?

Is the Marshall Sanitarium a good place in which to care for the patient? If not, where may he be placed for care?

Is the insulin treatment harmful or helpful?

Can we expect the mental condition to improve soon or will it take a long time before his mental balance is restored?

Should he be given complete rest in bed? Should he be permitted to sit in a chair and to walk about occasionally? Has he been exercising too much?

I forgot to mention that the doctors are giving him insulin for “shock.” I am anxious to know whether this ought to be given.

If Miss Davis will mail the reading to … I will get it at once. If it is necessary to telephone to me, I will be at … at 3 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon and the telephone is …

Thank you a million times. I will forward the check for this in a day or so. I have to make a deposit tomorrow - No, it is going forward now instead. I think I am a little mixed up tonight, I am that tired.

B1. 10/25/40 Sister [813]‘s letter to EC:

My dear Mr. Cayce:

It was good to hear your voice again yesterday. It is quite a long time since I have heard from you. I have often thought of writing but as I didn’t have anything of importance to write about the letter didn’t get written.

Last evening I talked by long distance telephone with my brother’s wife, […] and she made an urgent request that you be asked to give a reading for [2387] my brother, as soon as possible. When I spoke with you yesterday I was not sure of his condition and I did not know whether Sunday would be too late for help to be given to him, so I hesitated about making an appointment. I find that the doctor’s do not know what is the matter with [2387]. One doctor thinks that there is a physical cause for the mental upheaval he is suffering. Another thinks he has had a nervous collapse…perhaps. But the fact remains that [2387] is very weak, takes very little nourishment, is completely out of his mind, and has to be tied to the bed with sheets to keep him quiet at all and give him a little rest. His bladder is paralyzed, I think, and one of the doctors thought there might be a tumor on the brain but as I understand the situation, a diagnosis of the blood count was found to be negative, so I don’t think there is any tumor. I talked with my sister [890] by long distance yesterday. She was at the sanitarium a couple of days ago and talked with one of the doctors. The talk was most unsatisfactory. Not one of the doctors has any idea of what is apparently killing [2387]. He is growing worse from day to day and nothing is really being done for him. So now you see why I am so distressed and hope that you will be able to give a reading for him by Sunday morning at the latest.

Please send the diagnosis to me at the address given at the head of the letter. Then I will read it, and if the diagnosis warrants it, will immediately take it and drive up to my home and see that the directions are carried out. If the diagnosis does not warrant it, I won’t go home but will send the instructions, etc. to my brother’s wife immediately. I haven’t mentioned that of course we can’t get [2387]‘s signature for this request as he is mentally deranged at this time.

Another thought occurs to me: When you give the physical reading, if no physical cause is found for [2387]‘s mental collapse, will it be necessary to give a different type of reading in order to learn the cause of this nervous disorganization? If it is found to be necessary to have another type of reading - that is, to get at the “inner self” or the subconscious mind - please do whatever is necessary. You are to be the judge. You have our deepest gratitude. My sister, Mrs. [890], is so glad to know that you promised to give [2387] a reading on Sunday. I told her this morning when I talked with her on the telephone.
