This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of November, 1940, in accordance with request made by the sister - Miss [813], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Marshall Time of Reading Sanitarium, 10:30 to 10:45 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. Linden Avenue, Troy, New York.

1. GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here; this we have had before.

3. As we find, there are improvements in the general physical forces of the body; though, to be sure, the body is far from being in that position of full recuperative activities in the system.

4. In the present, we would not give the stupes too often, but keep them sufficiently - as yet - that there are the activities of the kidneys and bladder without mechanical means. These would then be left off one time, and then kept the next time, in the manner as suggested.

5. The beef juice we would give in the manner indicated, as medicine, often; a little at the time, but not just gulped. For, when there is the realization that this is not the medicated but nature’s sources, it will be taken by the body.

6. To the diet we would add one Jerusalem artichoke each day, - this taken wit the meal, you see; one about the size of a guinea egg. One day let it be cooked, - boiled as a potato. The next day let it be cut up and eaten raw. This will be better assimilated insulin for the system than the shots; though it will be necessary for one or two or three more periods of giving shots, you see.

7. Each evening, for twenty to thirty minutes, give a spinal rub. This would be given - by the nurse - when the body is prepared for sleeping, or for bed. Rub with pure Peanut Oil, in a circular motion, down either side of the spine. This will not only aid in the absorption of this to create a better superficial circulation, but will aid in making better coordinations between the reflexes of the sympathetic system AND the cerebrospinal system.

8. The rest we would keep in the general manner as is being done.

9. We should find the body returning to normalcy, if this treatment is CONSISTENTLY administered for ten days to two weeks.

11. (Q) What is meant by uremic poisoning? (A) The necessity of the catheterizing allowed the urine to so act upon bladder, urethra and kidneys as to form poisoning in the system from the urine itself, see? For, the very nature of same is as the purging of the system of poisons, which are BASICALLY uremic or urine poisoning, see? and this is the activity of the kidneys. Thus with this becoming stale, or old, or with the lack of the ability to act through the system, it caused same. This produces, or has produced, pressures upon the nerve system. Hence, as just indicated, the massage downward along the spinal centers with the Peanut Oil to aid in stimulating a circulation to relieve these pressures from centers, will alleviate the disturbance between rationalism and normalism in the physical reaction.

12. (Q) Is the Marshall Sanitarium a good place in which to care for him? (A) For the present. As we find, in ten days or two weeks the body will be able to be removed home, or wherever desired; but keep one nurse with him for a time afterward, at least.

13. (Q) Explain condition in 9th dorsal area? (A) That is where the block has been, for those activities between liver and kidneys especially, that has caused much of the disturbance.

14. (Q) Is there still danger of hemorrhage or convulsions? (A) As long as the poisons are being eliminated from the system, and the system is reacting to same, this is becoming lessened all the time; but if there is the accumulation, or the reactions as to block the system, this might become possible. Hence one of the reasons for the assimilating of insulin from foods rather than from the injections; for one bcomes a shock to the nervous system, the other assimilated becomes a stimulation to same as to remove tensions - WITH massage AND the OIL.

15. (Q) Will it take a long time before his mental balance is restored? (A) As just indicated.

R1. 11/10/40 Sister [813]‘s letter to EC:

My dear Mr. Cayce:

My family is certainly very grateful for the wonderful help you have given to my brother [2387]. At the preset time he is slowly gaining each day and we hope that he will soon be out of danger. As yet he is unable to feed himself and is still irrational, knowing little of what we say to him - though he recognizes all of us (each of us, I should say) and seems to be able to coordinate better.

This ordeal we are passing through is the most terrible that has ever faced our family. [2387]‘s wife thought he had a nervous breakdown from over-work and sent him to the family physician. The physician examined him on three different occasions and pronounced him physically fit but said he was very nervous. Finally he suggested a sanitarium, but [2387]‘s wife didn’t follow the suggestion. Instead she induced [2387] to remain home for half a day, resting. He went to the office after lunch. Then he did some very crazy things and he was taken to a sanitarium for the mentally deranged. After he went there he grew rapidly worse until he had to be placed in a room without furniture. He paced the room and shouted and finally had to be placed in a retraining sheet.

I knew nothing of this until my sister wrote me that [2387] was in a sanitarium and was mentally unbalanced. That was on October 24th, I think. I telephoned to you that day as I had been told several physicians who examined [2387] could reach no agreement in the diagnosis of his case. You said that you could not give him a reading until the following Sunday, October 27th. I had no further word from my family so did not know how seriously ill [2387] was until Miss Davis telephoned to me on the afternoon of the 27th. When I got the call, I packed a few things and caught the first train that I could for home. I arrived there on Monday morning and hurried to the sanitarium. I knew I had a difficult task to convince a couple - or three, to be exact - physicians that their diagnosis was wrong, and that they should accept the diagnosis of psychic, who is not a doctor, and follow his directions. But I was so determined to save my brother’s life, if possible, that I would let nothing stand in my way - not even a group of specialists! I had fire and determination in my eye when I entered the sanitarium and within half an hour had the consent of the head of the sanitarium to try the turpentine stupes. I ordered two nurses and one arrived within the hour. From that time on [2387] began to improve.

When I arrived on Monday morning he was as close to death as one can be and live. I had no hope for him whatever. His skin had that dehydrated look that goes with death. He was so weak his eyes were running and his lips had a scum on them. He didn’t speak and he was being fed liquids through a nostril. One of the doctors said his bladder was paralyzed and as you know, he was bring catheterized - this had been done for 15 days. Because of the restraining sheet, he had a bad sore on the lower part of his back. I think as long as I live I shall remember the horror of that sight when I went into his room. When the nurse arrived to take charge at noon, [2387] could not swallow - he gargled the liquid when she tried to feed him.

After applying the stupes, the next morning he voided a quart of urine and took nourishment. He became more relaxed and the next day ate a fair dinner. He gained in strength but we could not determine whether the condition in the 9th dorsal area was clearing or not, hence the request for a check reading. The first reading was not clear and we did not understand just what was the matter in the 9th dorsal, nor what was meant by uremic poisoning, since he did not have what is known as uremic poisoning. The second reading made everything clear. Up to the time of the second reading, one doctor was still stoutly maintaining that [2387]‘s bladder was paralyzed and that the urine voided each day was merely overflow.

When the second reading came, explaining that there is a block in the 9th dorsal area between the kidneys and the liver, the doctors knew without any question that here was the true diagnosis. I went into their office and told them what was the matter - especially about the catheter causing the fluid to back up, causing a pressure. Thy were literally speechless! They never opened their mouths in reply. They haven’t said one word since, and they look so sheepish! I would like to know what they have said among themselves. I heard that one doctor said you were uncanny! But I think they are watching the case with much interest.

They did about all they could to kill him and he would have been under the sod in a very short time if you had not come to his rescue. I have had a difficult time to get the nurses to obey instructions exactly. I suppose the directions are so simple that they do not seem important. I could not get the nurses to give the beef juice as often as directed, though I begged the day nurse over and over to give it exactly as directed. The stupes were applied half-heartedly. [2387] was and is so restless at times that it is very hard to keep the stupes on him. He had a sore on his back and the turpentine water ran into the sore, so the nurses didn’t apply the pack over the kidneys on the back. As I told the doctors on Wednesday, the stupes were not given a fair chance. But since the second reading came, explaining more in detail, the nurse has understood better and has been more faithful with the stupes. Today I have finally succeeded in getting both nurses to give the juice regularly and to apply the stupes. However, the day nurse rather neglected [2387]‘s bowels. Tuesday evening she gave him a cascara tablet and Wednesday he had a large bowel movement, the first he has had without an enema. He made a wonderful improvement of Wednesday and Thursday, but alas, the cathartics did not work that she gave him on Thursday and Friday and Saturday morning when I called his bowels had not moved since Wednesday. Elimination being so important in [2387]‘s condition, you can well imagine that he has had a set-back and he was not quite so well yesterday and today. I think the nurse has had a lesson and is now faithfully following directions. This morning he had three good bowel movements and is voiding quite normally. I am hoping that tomorrow he will be better.

I have to put up a terrific struggle at the sanitarium, trying to get the nurses and doctors to follow directions exactly. The three doctors that are in constant attendance at the sanitarium are a complete washout! When [2387] recovers I can have a good laugh at the humor of the whole situation but right now it doesn’t seem very funny. To think of barging in on three doctors, in their own sanitarium, and telling them in no uncertain terms just what was ailing their patient, and implying that they were unable to diagnose the case!

I will let you know how [2387] progresses and if something goes wrong you are likely to get an SOS. We are glad to have your letter of November 5th.

Dear Miss [813]:

Thank you very much for yours of the 10th. Am very thankful and happy to know there is even some improvement with your brother - and now that you have gotten better cooperation of the nurses - and will they keep the eliminations regular, believe he will come back in fine shape. Believe all that dizziness and confusion will pass off - am sure a good colonic will be most helpful - if you can get the nurses to give it to him.

We arrived here [N.Y.] Sunday night about 8.30 - pretty tired from the long day’s ride, hope to be of some help to others while here. Have had a few come in to see us already, and are expecting others today and tomorrow. A meeting or two

• open meetings are being planned in the City and trust we may help some. Yes, know we are glad to try and help should it be needed - can well appreciate what a fight you must have had with the Dr.’s and nurses also. But believe you will win out and that real results will come forth -
