This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 15th day of December, 1927, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [2483].

Born February 4, 1871, 12:00 noon, Saturday, five miles east of center of Indianapolis, Indiana, on National Road. Time of Reading 12:30 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. Brooklyn, N.Y. (Life Reading Suggestion)

1. EC: We have the entity and those relations with the universe and universal forces, as are latent and exhibited in the present earth’s plane.

2. In entering the earth’s plane we find the entity under the influences of Aries and Neptune, with Venus and Jupiter. In the adverse we find influences in Jupiter, with Mars and with Uranus. Hence we find many contradictory conditions in the present appearance as to the mental reaction of the entity to various conditions, peoples and tenets as the entity responds to in many different ways, with many of those influences from the appearance in the earth’s plane bringing - with the varied conditions - many of those unstable and many ennobling (for they are at an at-variance with each other) influences in the life. Hence we find one constantly seeking a change; one constantly attempting to coordinate various experiences with experiences of others, and an untenetable concept of a standard as set in one direction. This in itself brings many adverse conditions through the relationships of the entity in the earth’s plane, and at the same time brings the entity in the association or under the influence of many conditions, mental and spiritual, which - if studied aright - might bring many better conditions and many developments for the entity in this present experience.

3. In the appearances and those influences in the present life:

4. In the one before this we find in that land now known as Arabia. The entity then in the thirtieth (30th) year came under the influence of the teachings through a disciple of the Master - Andrew; and through this experience gained much. Being then in the time or period, as counted in the present, in the year forty-four (44). The entity gained, lost - lost, gained - through this appearance. Living to a great age, for the time and for the conditions surrounding the entity. First as the herdsman the entity gained, as the closeness to nature brought much retrospection for the entity. The surrounding conditions brought the keen insight into material conditions, and the association of the entity with the truths brought great power, great knowledge, great understanding. In the application, when these turned to those forces as are created by one being compatible with the law - bringing power, position, and the accompanying conditions with same - the entity LOST, when this was turned into secular resources or secular purposes for the satisfaction of satisfying fleshly desires for self. In the persecutions that followed (for he became the teacher and the power in that region), the entity lost - and again in coming under the influence of self’s own bodily preservation against those truths as set before others by the entity. In the release and the change again, when alone, the entity GAINED in attempting to adjust self and self’s conditions to that force as awakened through the contact of one reflecting so much of the Master. In the name Idoddxo. The entity - in the urge as seen from the experience, and from the sojourn from that experience in the Venus forces - finds many conditions presented in the present experience:

The love of association of self (these are as urges) with teachers and ministers of many varying tenets, yet an innate something harkening - as it were - to those principles, those expressions of the Master, and the especial sympathy also for Andrew is seen in the present experience. The love also of the real estate and property, and holdings, and again the love of those surroundings in the physical sense that show pomp, power, glory of a physical sense or physical urge as expressed in such surroundings.

6. Love of music and attractions for same.

7. In the application of these urges - as is seen from that combative force created in the life or experience through life of the entity - well that those tenets, those truths as proclaimed by Andrew respecting the Master’s status in the relationship of man to the Creative Force, or God - well that these be set as a standard alone through will of self, and making the mind one with the Creative Energy, much of this world’s powers would be turned into those channels in which the entity - in the physical sense - might again apply self towards that correct application of manifested power in worldly goods and in the surroundings of royal forces, royal powers, in state, in the social and economic conditions of man. These then would be - through those channels of the application of such truths - the greater force in the life, for mental, spiritual or economic success of the entity in the present experience.

8. In the one before this we find in that period when the division arose in the land now known as Egypt. In time (as counted) ten thousand five hundred (10,500) years before the Prince of Peace came into Egypt, in person. The entity then among those who were the builders in the physical sense of the homes and the palaces and the dwelling places of the peoples then in power. Not as the architect; not as the laborer. Rather as the overseer of those that labored, and representing both the native and the alien in their association one with another and the reports of same to the peoples in power. The entity in the name Arckhdlenr. In this experience we find the entity gaining, losing - gaining and gaining. As the various concepts of the real intent and purpose was set forth, compounded and comprehended and applied during the period, the entity gained or lost, depending upon the application of the tenets as held by entity as associated with those with whom the entity then associated. Being in a place of power, easily tempted, by the rise and fall of the powers as were disturbed through those conditions arising in the peoples’ minds at this period; yet when coming under the full influence of those tenets, those truths as set forth by the scribe, or the interpreter of the truths as propounded by the priest - as impelled into the minds of the native, and the visitor, and the neighbors, by the ruler in power - the entity gained, when these concepts rose to the place of being able to manifest same in the appreciable manner when it applied both to the physical man and to the spiritual man, even of that day, from tenets which the foundation of those lessons as given by the Master were builded upon!

9. In the application of that earthly experience - in the innate and unexpressed forces of the body we find one slow in speech to express self; yet once launched in the proper direction showing even greater power than many teachers in any field the entity may choose to express self in.

10. In the application then of the experiences of the entity in the earth’s plane, and this experience, innate in the entity from experiences in other planes:

Let thine heart be stable in the tenets of Him who gave, “Come unto me - for he that climbeth up some other way is the thief and the robber; for no man approaches the Father but by me.” By that tenet as set in Him make thy paths straight. Applying self in the direction then of the teacher, or the associate with teacher or lecturer, or if perchance in the merchandise line - keep the heart, the mind, the words of the mouth in THAT same channel; for in compliance with the law - the universal law - that builded within self must be met. When self is made at an at-oneness with the universal law, or the first Creative Energy, or God, those things that are of the earthly nature are added unto thee. That thou hast builded is thine own possession and may not be taken away, and in the application of that attained, others of the storehouse of that Creative Energy, in all its phases, may be added unto the inner man. The PHYSICAL man receives that builded. Ready for questions.

12. (Q) Has this body the power to develop psychic phenomena of any kind? If so, how can it be developed? (A) Rather the ability as is shown through the experience of being the interpreter of that of the psychic or latent forces as are builded in man, as applied to physical application of same in and among men. In the applying of that within self, other powers are developed, or the talents are multiplied.

13. (Q) Which of the businesses now under consideration by this body is the most desirable and profitable to be undertaken? (A) Dependent upon what the entity considers profitable. That from the ability to develop towards the mark of high calling as set in Him would be in that of the association and of the explanation of psychic forces, psychic truths, psychic laws, as applied through any teacher, lecturer, or an APPLICANT of physical laws towards physical truths and spiritual laws towards spiritual truths. As this is builded, the MATERIAL things of life may be added.

If considered from purely the MATERIAL standpoint, that of the merchant that would bring self in contact with others, that the entity may stand in the place of a truth - for, as is seen in the entity’s life, ever has the entity stood in the place or as an exponent of an idea, or IDEAL. In the physical application these have never been correct in the full sense, whether in that of spiritual laws as applied to spiritual lessons or whether as a physical law applied to physical conditions; for when representative of a country, a peoples, a nation, or an individual, there must be kept A ONE STANDARD. An unstable man is a stumbling block to himself.

14. (Q) Where and how is the best way to promote the business? (A) The how and way best within self, if from the physical and the spiritual development. If from the material standpoint, in the center from which radiates the powers of the world - Washington.

15. (Q) Give names of those whom I must see to promote the same? (A) Self is first applied in one. The others would be of material conditions. Apply those truths, those lessons given. Bring self first to that understanding of self, and in same gain physical, mental and spiritual understanding.

R1. 7/29/34 [2483]‘s letter to EC: “Since I last saw you matters have gone ‘from bad to worse.’ As you know, I lost all I had in Florida. Since then everything I ventured into went wrong. For two years I suffered from jaundice and was not able to work much. Since last Oct. I have been living here with my sister. My wife [1982] has been in Los Angeles for some time and has managed to make her own way. If you can advise me any way to get on my feet again financially it will be greatly appreciated.” [He also requested a Physical Rdg. for a friend.]

R2. 8/2/34 EC’s letter to [2483]:

My dear Mr. [2483]:

I was indeed surprised and, I assure you, quite agreeably so to receive this morning yours of the 29th. Already I have written Mrs. […] as per the enclosed copy, and certainly hope that we may be of some service to her. Regarding her condition, Sciatica, I would like to say that quite a number of physicians have sent such patients to Virginia Beach - even from John Hopkins and Mayo’s - for recuperation. The sands here contain a great deal of radium and gold, which properties are quite beneficial in such conditions. And people get much help from just taking the sand baths on the seashore, to say nothing of other curative measures that might be added from here. The seashore here is quite a bit different from anywhere else in this respect; not that we have a sick colony, but a great many people from all over the country do come here for their health as much as for a summer resort. In fact, as a matter of record you will find that before the War the Germans had obtained a permit to build a hospital at Virginia Beach - and for this very reason, on account of the great amount of beneficial properties in the sands along the seashore here. So, there is a condition here that exists in very few places in the world. The streams in the oceans run away from the land. The Gulf Stream coming up from the Florida coast and the Arctic Stream coming down unite opposite the Chesapeake Bay and turn across the ocean. Deposits both from the north and south are among the sands on the seashore at Virginia Beach, and you don’t find such a condition anywhere else. Therefore, I believe it would do Mrs. […] good; also we might be able to help her through information that we might obtain. Although we have no hospital in operation here at the present time (it having been closed since the beginning of the depression), we do have the cooperation of several physicians in Virginia Beach and quite a number in Norfolk; so that, should Mrs. […] require any special attention from any of these we would be able to obtain it for her.

We have wondered about you quite a number of times. In some of the literature sent me from some place or another, I noticed that Mrs. [1982] was in California - and I had thought possibly you were there also. I believe she has charge of some retreat there, or some group for one of the New Thought organizations or Truth centers; or possibly it is the Yagoda - I don’t remember just which one, but I have seen it several times.

I’m sorry to hear of your losses in Florida. Quite a number of our friends - in fact, some of my own family - were indeed losers in their investments in Florida some years ago. I have a sister and brother-in-law who still live there. They were not in the southernmost portion nor in the west coast, but were farther up on the State, and have thus fared somewhat better, as they have stuck it out and report things being considerably on the improve.

I’m certainly sorry to know you have been “under the weather” yourself. I suspect your condition has been as much from worry mentally as anything else, or possibly the astrologer would say that you have been under the bad aspects of some star or another. But I’m hoping that things are very much on the improve with you. And you know that if I may be able in any way to be of a help or assistance to you, I would be only too glad to do so. I believe that if after ‘36 there is to be a return of normalcy or any boom, Virginia Beach is going to be among the first places to have same. That seems to have been the indication and the information all along, and since we have been here - in the last nine years - the winter population has increased from about three hundred people to possibly five thousand, with at least forty or fifty thousand during the summer. It is still quite a place, but it is becoming better and better. More and more people are beginning to build permanent homes here, and especially people who are seeking health. A quiet place, yes (most of the time); of course, there can be found just as much to do here as in most any place you want. We are eighteen miles from Norfolk, reached by two bus lines and a trolley.

So I do hope that Mrs. […] comes down. I assure you that if we can be of any service to her, we will be only too glad to do so.

Things have been rather quiet with us throughout the years, and I think we are still waiting for such a person as yourself to be sufficiently convinced that there is something to be presented through this channel to present it to the public.

I hope you will let us hear from you. Let me assure you that it is our desire to be of service to yourself or any of your friends or acquaintances.

R3. 8/14/34 [2483]‘s letter to EC:

… St., Indianapolis, Ind.

Dear Edgar Cayce:

I was not able to see Mrs. […] until last evening and she said she had not received your letter or booklets and so today I took her the copy you sent me and some of the literature. She has had two or three physicians and they have advised her against going to the seashore. She wants to go to Glochester, Mass., but her doctors will not permit it. Another friend who has been to Virginia Beach, as well as one of her sons, and I have all advised her to go there. I believe she has not yet decided when she will leave or where she will go. I believe her doctor has advised her to go to White Sulphur Springs.

I urged her last evening to write you for a “reading” and you would probably tell her where to go - if any place - and surely what to do for her trouble. I hope I may persuade her to do so. I shall see her again in a few days.

I was surprised to learn that you had given up the Sanatorium as I thought Capt. Kahn and Blumenthal had gotten that going in good shape. However, I am glad you have an Association for carrying on the work.

I note what you say about wanting someone to present this work to the public. There is nothing I would rather do but I believe it will have to be SELF-sustaining in order to succeed. Until the public has been convinced as to the genuineness of your powers and the need of humanity for this good, I believe it will not be possible to get any person or group of persons to endow an Institution to perpetuate it.

I do believe if your “alter ego” will permit you to charge reasonable fees for consultations, we could go to various cities and put on an educational campaign which would give the public an opportunity for enlightenment and at the same time reach many worthy cases. My idea would be to give a “reading” for someone each day (or week) who could not afford to pay but at the same time another “reading” to someone who could afford to pay for both readings.

In this way expenses could be met, the work made known to the world and at the same time relieving many of their sufferings.

Then after a time we could find a few who would be able & willing to endow an Institution that would be permanent. Scientific investigations could be made and perhaps others developed to help carry on the work.

I have often regretted that you did not come to Brooklyn when I had the place and the means to start the work in a small way and I believe it would have grown by this time into a large work. However, this is not time for regrets! There is no time but the “now.”

So if you think there is anything to my idea let me know and maybe we can work out a plan that will be practicable.

My wife [1982] has done some lecturing in Los Angeles for Unity and also for one other Center but is not doing anything along that line now. She is assisting a group of blind people & hopes to organize a Club for them. But it is difficult to get any one to supply the money.

It seems too bad that even for the best things in life money is an essential.

I shall await your reply to the above suggestions with eagerness.

R4. 8/20/34 EC’s letter to [2483]:

Mr. [2483] Indianapolis, Ind.

My dear Mr. [2483]:-

I am in receipt of yours of the 14th and I was, indeed, very glad to hear from you.

I do not understand why Mrs. […] did not receive her literature, as it was mailed about the same time as the letter to you. Believe, however, you had a copy of the letter that was sent and possibly the same literature, and if you have passed this on to her and spoken to her, I am sure it did just as much good and possibly answered the same purpose.

There must be some other complication that would induce the physicians to advise her against going to the seashore, either blood pressure or the metabolism in some way, and most of them, as I have said before, do advise them to come to a place of this kind. I do not know about Glouchester, though we have had some correspondence with people there. There may have been personal reasons, but as I have understood from most of the correspondence, this is rather a dank, dreary place, they have a great deal of fog at times, while here the currents of the ocean run away from the land, making a deposit in the sands along the shore in eastern Virginia that are possibly different from any other place in the world. We have the ores that come down from the Potomac and its tributaries, the James and it tributaries, and then combined with those of the Gulf Stream and Arctic Stream, deposits are along the shores that contain a great deal more gold and radium than any other place, possibly, in the world.

Should she decide to come to White Sulphur, that is not such a great distance from here, and it might be possible that she would run down for a week end or something like that, and we might be of some help. Certainly hope we can be of a service to her.

The conditions as surrounded the closing of the institution that was built for the Hospital would be a long story. It is one of those circumstances where internal animosity wrecked what was possibly as beautiful an idea as might be imagined, but when two of that race become jealous one of the other, they usually grind the man between, as in the “nether” stone.

Yes, I believe the Association can be made self-sustaining. If it cannot, I do not think it has the place in the affairs of men that we might be led to think it had when we consider just a few of the results from the information, but the data that has been gathered through the years and which is on file here and which has been touched only here and there, appears to be very worth while. Just how this is to be done, I do not know.

We are to have a meeting the 2nd of September of the new Board of Trustees as has just been elected at our last annual Congress. They are to formulate the plans and policies for the approaches to individuals, to groups, to classes, for the next year or the next three years. We have a Manager who will possibly be elected again at this meeting, and a Secretary. All of the work, of course, is carried on at present in the office in my home, but it is a recognized corporation in the State of Virginia, recognized and honored in New York, which means practically having recognition throughout all of the states. It is also recognized as an institution by the Federal Government. Was ruled on in the last few months by those in charge of same as correctly organized, as an ecclesiastical, philanthropic organization. They have given us a report to this effect.

Last fall, for the first time, in New York, we undertook to present the work to the American Society for Psychical Research, New York Branch, the organization that was formerly conducted by Dr. Hyslop, who was a great friend of Beecher, (I believe you lived in the home that Beecher built in Brooklyn.) It was also presented to the American Psychical Institute, headed by Hereward Carrington, whom you possibly know. Both of these institutions, as you very well know, have had a greater leaning towards what is called, ordinary spiritualism, while this is not classed even by the investigators in these groups, except a few of them, of course, as spiritualism. We also met quite a number of research workers that have been in very much broader fields. Some of the sponsors of Krishnamurti and Mukerji, and some of that ilk.

Just whether this is the right way or not, we haven’t as yet been able to determine, but I believe an individual who was first convinced himself that the sources of information were, first, sincere; 2nd, worth while, and third, ethical, could take or could have taken the groups as were contacted and have built an organization for research that was worth while, for many of these as were contacted through these three channels are among the wealthiest people in America.

Knowing your ability, especially in the acquaintanceships among the masses, both in America and abroad, remembering your personality and your ability to meet the people, was why I made the suggestion. I don’t know whether it would be of interest to you or not.

We had at the beginning of the organization such a man [A. C. Preston]. He, however, was more gifted along the commercial order and not as capable in a social or even an economical way as he might have been. He proved to be rather disastrous, for he divided rather than unified the efforts of the Trustees, and in less than a year had the organization’s finances in a bad shape rather than in a good shape. While he himself couldn’t be blamed, for he was taken ill, it was a very expensive thing to the organization. But with the proper presentation of the purposes and aims, there should be no trouble in having an institution, either within or fostering the work of this organization that would enable us to do a real work.

There is, of course, the need for an institution, but I do not think that it, the institution, should be a part of the research organization, but the institution’s records should be a part of the research organization’s records - if you understand me.

We are planning to go to Chicago for a few weeks, possibly the early part of October. Every day quite a number of requests from Chicago are received. At various times have had a very good membership to the organization in and around Chicago. Have several physicians, M.D.’s, osteopaths, naturopaths, and some of the others, who have been giving us consistent reports on their work with the information. Some of them have been as long as two or three years in the work.

Possibly, when we come west, if you do not find it convenient to come down this way before that time, we can talk the matter over at some length. We had some very, very good friends there in Indianapolis - [4126]‘s. They were on Washington Street for a number of years. They gradually lost interest, or we quit hearing from them. More recently we have had a request from a hospital there, or from a father whose son was in a hospital, but before we had the opportunity of making the appointment, he had died.

Possibly you might have some ideas that you would suggest that we could present to the Board, and we could be laying plans for carrying them out. Of course, this organization, as every other one, I suppose, of like nature, at the present time has no funds whatsoever; only that for the daily operations, and it should never depend upon appointments for readings from day to day, for there are so many channels that I am sure could be made self-sustaining.

The specifics for various disorders alone could be made into a business which should be outside of the research organization, yet the research organization should receive funds from the activities - such as, a remedy for pyorrhea, a remedy for hemorrhoids, for arthritis, for internal inflammation either in lungs or through the torso, an aid in malignant conditions that is being used by some of the biggest institutions in the United States, and they know just as much as you do as to what it is, except that they receive it in powder form.

Such things could be made sources of income that would dispense with any necessity of relying upon appointments, but it requires a business head and one who is capable of making the proper associations and contacts and who know when they have been made and how to handle them. Of course, all of them become sales propositions, I realize.

Then there is the request for a report by more than one publishing company, so that the literature end of the organization could be made a source of income that - well, no one could tell what it might lead to, but it needs someone to be selected to present this. This, again, requires management and the ability on the part of the manager to know the right type of people to approach. Then there are the Lessons, or the study group work. There has been already a series of twelve lessons completed, and one-third of another year’s work. There are already seven or more groups using these. This in itself could be made a source of income that would sustain the whole organization, as any one of the others would, and there are enough people who have already signified their interest in a Foundation who have enough of this world’s goods to foster any one of these or all of them, had we a head on whom they were themselves sold to such an extent that they could present it to these people, for many of these have personally received information that has convinced them personally.

Then there is the educational and vocational guidance department, that of itself could be made a department that would supply information to psychologists, psychiatrists, and teachers in various characters of schools, that would be very much worth while. It is being used already by two or three schools.

But think this over. I may be quite visionary. Of course, I know your experience with all such things has been sufficient to give you the proper insight into anything I might tell you.

When you write Mrs. [1982], be sure to remember me to her. I would like very much to have her address. I would like to write her myself.

My Dear Edgar:

I have read your letter with a great deal of interest and note what you say regarding your work. There is nothing I would rather do than to promote you and your work for I believe it can be of inestimable value to humanity.

You ask for my ideas. They are about as follows: Start in any city and give a few free lectures and possible give a short demonstration of your power. Then give private readings possible for a few days. While you were giving these I could go ahead to the next city & make the arrangements for lectures in that place. By the time we have covered part of the country we should have interested enough people to make the work permanent and then establish headquarters in some city, like Washington.

If you have other things to sell that would help pay expenses, in the beginning I would want only enough to live on - say about $25. a week. I do not know how much you may require but you have an idea whether this method can be made to pay.

It will be impossible for me to come to Virginia Beach, but if you are going to Chicago, why not come this way & spend two or three days with us. I am sure my sister will be glad to entertain you.

R6. 9/7/34 EC’s letter to [2483]:

Mr. [2483] Indianapolis, Ind.

My dear Mr. [2483]:-

I have yours of the 30th and note what you have to say regarding your ideas about the work.

We had a meeting on the 2nd of the new Board of Trustees of the Association, which is at this time presenting the work that I am doing. There were quite a number of plans presented at that time, and there will be a meeting very shortly of those who are trying to take all of those plans into consideration and to decide on that as will be as near a concrete, definite way of presenting what we feel we have to offer, for the last thirty years’ work must speak for itself, but how is the best way to give this out without it becoming a cult or without being considered so radical that we will create animosity and hatred - not that we can please everyone, no, but that we may give to others that which we have found good in our own experience, and give it to them in such a way and manner that it will be a plausible, feasible, workable thing in their experience.

Of course, your idea is very good, and it has been the policy of the organization to do this some time during each year, sometimes two or three such trips, but it is necessary to keep close in touch with the office for the work must be sufficiently centralized that individuals scattered over the country, as they are, who are vitally interested and who are depending so much upon it, may know just how to reach (we may call it) the source of their information. I think it may be worked out about the trip to Chicago and, of course, it would be necessary before we would undertake anything for us to get together and consider all of the things that have gone on and the problems that the Association and the work is confronted with through the various experiences. I am hoping, though, that I can keep in touch with you and that we may be able to work out something in a satisfactory way and manner.

R7. 11/3/38 [2483]‘s letter: “I hope this will find you still carrying on your fine work. I have been on the road most of the time organizing ‘Junto’ Clubs in various cities. Junto is similar to Rotary but is organized solely to get business for its members.” [He requested a Physical for Miss [1750].]

“I have been quite well physically but financially I have had a terrible ‘bellyache’…My wife is still in L.A. and I hope to join her after the first of the year.”

R8. 11/28/38 Reply to EC’s letter trying to put him in touch with Mr. [341]: “I shall try to get in touch with [341] and would also like to see [257] again.”

R9. 12/15/38 Letter: “I certainly enjoyed seeing you again and hearing your story anew. Also I was glad to meet [341] and to learn of the progress your work is making.”
