Time of Reading Set bet. 3:30 to 4:30 P. M. Taken 4:00 to 4:05 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, N.J.
-
GC: You will have before you the entity [2487], …, N.J., who seeks information, advice and guidance as to her life and work:
-
EC: Yes, we have the inquiring mind and body, [2487]; this we have had before.
-
As we find there are problems, yet this is not particularly a good time for a change.
-
When there has been the completing of the present sessions, if still there are those offers for work in research departments, very good; but do not change in the immediate present.
-
Do continue with the obtaining of the degree. Use another subject. To be sure, this is work - but the mind, the purposes are such that yet will be seen the needs for this in the activities to which the body may contribute its abilities in those periods yet to come.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Should I consider the Goodyear offer? (A) Consider but not until the present school year has been completed.
-
(Q) Or will I be asked to do war research work? (A) It will be asked if the body offers self.
-
(Q) Or is there other work which I am to do? (A) As just indicated in research would be the better for the body, but complete the degree.
-
We are through.

R1. 4/16/44 Letter from Miss [1387] to EC: ”…[2487] also said her last questions were not taken into consideration. It is possible Mrs. [4038]‘s did not arrive in time for the reading - barely possible, but [2487]‘s had been there a long time…
“Haven’t seen [2487] yet but had a letter and she sounded as upset as ever. Apparently the reading did not make up her mind for her either. I guess maybe it is not supposed to. We are here to use our own free will and they on the other side are not going to help us out in that respect…”
R2. 4/17/44 Letter from Miss [1387] to EC: ”…[2487] dropped in to see me on her way down from Tarrytown last night. Dear “eddie”:
Anyway I feel better since I heard from you. I rather think I was upset because you upset my apple cart or turned over my playhouse. I did not ask if I was to get that degree and I certainly hoped there was something I could do to the study I had spent a year upon and when I was told in no uncertain terms to start over it was a blow. I have calmed down some now for I know there must be some good reason or the reading would not have been so insistent.
I was reading the last of the week some material about healing and how we bring it on ourselves by inner conflicts and confusion of mind etc. I thought now what have I been doing and it did not take me long to figure that one out. I knew that degree was getting me. If I have to get it why should I have any trouble but as [1387] says most of them do have plenty. The thing that gets me mostly is the wear of the commuting which I not only hate but find very tiring. Then the expense of something that you can see no use in makes it hard to take.
I am just about resigned though that if I did not make the spiritual development I should have in all those years I have been floating around someplace I have to contribute some mental development which the reading said I did make. The only trouble is I can’t seem to convince anyone here that I made any mental development.
Don’t quite get it about you. Have the readings told you lately you should rest? If so I hope you are doing it. As for me I did get Good Friday and I decided that I was going to rest. I slept a lot and feel much better. My sister was rather disgusted with me that I was so all in but I just needed sleep and that was that.
How I wish I could talk to you. I would not want to wear you out but would like to discuss a number of things.
I now admit that I felt at first as though I just would not take that degree it was too much but now feel as though I shall keep on trying but need more advice so go ahead and make the appointment when you can but don’t make it if you are supposed to be resting. I don’t see how I can do both things the reading said and that was take the Youngstown job when school is out and still finish the degree. Maybe there is a way. I will concentrate on that a while.
Am interested about [288] and the breathing exercises I did not suppose that could happen.
Must work on income tax now. Will write another letter soon and try and do better.
Did the Bible stories arrive for Tommy. He will soon be reading them to you.
Will send a check when I get my next check. This income tax is a nuisance.
Much love, [2487]
P.S. First question in 2nd set was: Would I gain mentally, materially or spiritually by changing positions?
R4. 4/22/44 Letter from EC to Miss [1387]: ”…In the case of [2487]‘s - there were two different lists of questions, and with so many people handling these things, you can imagine what might have happened. The last list she sent was not in order, and had been misplaced. No one is to be criticized for it but me for not being able to do more than I am…”
R5. 4/25/44 EC’s ltr. to Miss [2487]:
Miss [2487] …, New York
I should have answered your letter a long time ago, but it looks like I am a very poor writer and just can’t find enough time to answer all the people that I should write to.
I am very sorry that the last information up-set your apple cart. How the last list of questions got side tracked, I don’t know, but maybe we will somewhere along the line try to clear it up for you.
Are you coming to the beach this summer, or do you usually put this off until fall? I suppose if you accept a place after school is out, you will be busy. We are being favored with some students along this same line, except their’s is entirely from the spiritual angle of healing. Most of them apparently expect to attain the same results, and yet, one or the other of us must be wrong. The information suggests that you can’t cure a case of malaria by prayer, if they only have a quinine conscience. I am sure you get what it means.
I often wonder when you seem to have such an aversion to getting your degree, why the reading keeps on insisting that you must work for it. You must have become disgusted with this a lot, and I don’t blame you.
No, the readings haven’t told me to rest lately, but I am resting. We have gotten so far ahead it is rather a crime to have a reading for people, and then not able to send it to them for two or three weeks. When they once get them, they want them, and I don’t blame them. I am having to wait on the stenographers. Possibly will be able to get started back to work sometime next week. Feel sorry for those who have their appointments for the next eight or ten days, because they are just out of luck.
I wish I could drop in and see you sometime real soon. There are lots of things I would like to talk to you about. I don’t know, but it seems to me, even though you go Youngstown, it would be possible for you to go on and write your thesis. Maybe this isn’t possible, I don’t know.
Yes, there have been quite a number of people who have been quite up-set with the breathing exercises.
Didn’t you hear from Sally about the books for Tommy? We thought they were fine and so did she.
Thanks a lot, and let us hear from you when you have the chance.
With lots of love, I remain Eddie [EC/gm]
R6. 5/23/44 (Tues.) Letter enclosing an article she wrote for a school magazine entitled ARITHMETIC AND THE DEFENSE WORKER:
Dear “eddie”:
Here ‘tis. Looks learned don’t you think? Between you and me it is not much though.
Am glad you are managing about the readings. Do wish I could send you a crackerjack of a sect. You deserve one and need one but I don’t know of any. And I am not that so can’t even volunteer.
Yes, I am interested about the job at Akron. It will be interesting experience anyway. Maybe I’ll meet that man there. Certainly don’t get a nibble here let alone anything on my hook. Course you know I let my fish get away even when I have them on the hook. Ha! By the way are you doing any fishing. Do! I am sure it is just what you need.
Oh yes the healer told in a lecture to which [2799] went (she is the one who is to have the reading) that he raised his vibration through meditation and prayer before he did any healing.
Have an errand to do now so must run.
Thanks for the bulletins. Guess the one just came late. I won’t get impatient next time. I will give the extra one to [2799]. She will be especially interested in the reference to numerology.
Much love, [2487]

Dear [2487]
Thanks alot. This certainly does look learned. I will pass it on to Ecken and he will tell me whether there is anything in it or not. He is the mathematician in the family.
Well, we are managing with the readings in a way. Maybe we will get this settled sometime. We are getting another on the readings so when some of them are away and some have to quit, maybe we will have another one to fall back on. It is quite expensive as the help all comes so high these days.
I hope the job works out in Akron just like you want it to and that you get the man and everything else. But when you get him hooked this time, you hook him good.
I don’t think there is much healing without meditation and prayer and the raising of the vibrations of the healer as well as the patient.
It is time to go to work now. As you see, this is another one of the times when I have to get somebody else to do it for me.
I wish you could come to the meeting.
With much love, Eddie [EC/wi]
R8. 6/14/44 Miss [1387]‘s letter: “[2487] was in last night to pack up all her dissertation material she had in my office and send it to her sister’s. All that money and time wasted too. I don’t know what she can do now. She is completely washed up as far as that problem is concerned and they have no suggestions for her to continue. I hope that something happens out of Akron in July that will put her on the track of something.”

Dear “eddie”:
Before I settle down to study more statistics you rate a letter. I still write to YOU and my family and [1387] even though I don’t hear. Course I told you not to write till I sent an address. At present the above one is good. I plan to stay here for 3 more weeks. The woman is very fussy though.
Now as to the job. I rather like it and now I think I may be able to handle it. Though whether or not they will pay me enough to keep me remains to be seen. I still don’t see how I can stay and I think I’d like to if they will pay for the extra time I put in, and do that dissertation.
I am keeping my eyes and ears open. I think I might find a problem here. In fact I am handed a good one but I am afraid Col. would not accept it. I am told the things they want to find out and told I can have anything I want to help me solve it. Makes it a nice place to be.
I would love to have [1387] here. Together we could do a bang up job on this. But you know how she feels about leaving N.Y. Most New Yorkers do feel that way.
I still wonder about my future work as the last reading indicated it. I wonder if the association will finally get to do the research that it should do. Maybe I will eventually get there. I don’t see why I could not have been left with money so I could do as I please. Oh well I really am not complaining. I have a good job. In fact maybe I have 2 good jobs. If there is anything more embarrassing than having 2 jobs it’s not having any so there it is.
This work is statistical. I did not find that out till I got here. In fact if I had known I might not have come. Or I would have been studying all spring for it. They let me break in easy. As the boss is away, no one seems to be killing himself. Still it is fun. If I get only the summer I will have learned as much as in any summer school and got paid for doing it.
If anyone should cancel so that I could have my reading to tell me just what to do let me know. You could wire collect. Maybe I should make my own decisions. What do you think?? Another week and I will know more about this job. I could only keep still Sat. or Sun. at present.
By the way. How are you??? Are you getting enough rest?? I hope so. Or can you still say more than the women can keep up with.
How is Ruth???
I like Millicent’s booklet. I will order some when I get settled someplace.
Wish I could talk. I am getting tired of typing.
Much love, [2487]
[Handwritten at end of letter]: Don’t know why I send this clipping, I’ve intended to do so for some time.
Seems interesting though that N.Y. Times is printing such.
R10. 7/14/44 EC’s ltr. to Miss [2487]:
Miss [2487] Akron, Ohio
Dear [2487]
I hope you will pardon me for dictating this letter, but since the Congress I haven’t been able to keep up with my correspondence.
We had a real Congress this time. In fact, it was supposed to be for about four days, though we had invited everyone to come and spend the week, but they came a few days early and stayed some time after. I don’t know whether it was the way we affect people or whether we get them here and won’t let them go.
I am glad to know that you like the job. I am sure you would like to have [1387] for if there is anything you have to look up she seems to be a good one to run down things. I mean by that, to find out things.
I think the Association will eventually get down to the research work. Our great trouble at the present time is the office space. We have so many now that we have had to take the room that you and [1387] had when you were here for an office and put two people in there. You know it is not good when you have to tear the house up and it doesn’t solve the matter either. Tell me what you think of our suggested addition to the present office. This as you see will only be for offices and lecture room. You can well imagine what a time we had this year, trying to put one hundred or one hundred and fifty people in this little library. So, whenever they will let us, we hope to get started on this adding offices or the whole works. Of course this depends on the situation. Maybe we can have it by next year. Maybe not. I don’t think we will be able to do very much with the research, though, until we have more office space. Then, how about it? I know you would make a good one.
I haven’t been doing so hot recently. I am going to have to take out as soon as I can sort of catch up with my correspondence. I think I will get away about the last week of this month. I hope so, but it causes so blooming much trouble and costs so much now and disappoints so many, many people.
Yes, Mrs. [3175] was here. So was her friend, Mr. [3344]. They are lovely people. We had many hundreds of others. Would you believe it, [2487]? They were here from Seattle, Washington to Portland, Maine and from Hollywood, California to Hollywood, Florida. Now stir in all between and divide it into twenty-five of the forty-eight states and you can imagine what we had here. A Conglomeration. Yes. And we didn’t have a single fight while they were here.
R11. 8/13/44 (Sunday) Miss [2487]‘s ltr. to EC:
Dear “eddie”:
Last Sunday I fully intended to write to you but could not seem to get up enough pep. Today I will get going.
I think I wrote you that I finally decided that they would not pay me enough to stay here. I think I would rather teach and have my summer vacation than to work for the same money here. Maybe I would get more in the end and maybe I would not but whether I would or not I figgered [figured] I wanted some time to do the things I wanted to do and I would not have that here. For instance I would never have time to come to Virginia Beach. I would not get more than a week’s vacation next summer and maybe not that. I would never get more than a 2 week vacation. When I think of the 13 weeks I get off I decided that they had to pay me if I took this job. Furthermore they wanted someone with quite a lot of statistical training and some experience. They will have to pay for it. With the overtime it was not bad but I did not want to be out in the cold this fall. For I think the war will be over this winter.
Now to get down to business.
Did not you make an appointment for me for a reading the last of Aug.? At the time I said I would be present if possible. As I am here I think that is impossible. Also I said I would give up the time to someone else if it seemed more important. I have not forgotten my obligation or statements and want you to be very frank about this. First of all
- What is the time of the appt? 2. Should I give up the time to someone else?
This is what I had in mind. I would like guidance about that dissertation. I spose [suppose] there is something I should do but for the life of me I don’t know what. Since I am to get that degree I must. I don’t need to tell you that I gave up when I found that other dissertation would not be accepted. I apparently have to make another attempt as the reading was so insistent. Now do you think that [1387] is right that the reading will never give the kind of information specific that I want as to how I should proceed. That is mainly what problem to choose. If I would not get any suggestion on a problem I think I at least should trade TIMES or APPOINTMENT TIME I mean with Marie Sora. I think her appointment in in November.
There is one thing further. I had intended to have a reading on the Atlantean period when I made the appointment. If I have the reading and have the whole time 3:30-4:30. Do you think I could have that period and ask what problem I should take for research or should the reading be on the problem only? Also there is this suggestion: If you think someone should have a reading at the same time, my Atlantean period could wait. The time could be shared with someone and I could have a reading just asking for directions or guidance for my future work. When I read that last reading it was short but after all a lot was said in it. Especially when you consider that my second set of questions were not asked. It was so insistent that I get the degree that my future work would require it. Therefore there must be more important work that I am to do. For if I had stayed here (though a degree would be a help. And they seem to think I have it though I protest) I can’t see that I’d need it for this work. I think I could have gotten more money though if I’d had it. Certainly I don’t need a degree for the teaching job I have. Even the Supt. does not have one and the former Supt. did not even have an M.A. and he is State Commissioner of Education now.
Now I don’t like to put this all up to you but I don’t know what else to do. I hope I have covered the ground and made this all clear though I am sometimes about as clear as mud.
Let me know what you think?
Also I am enclosing a check while I have the money. It is as follows:
25.00....................yearly dues for active membership.10.00…for the building fund or for the association if you need it more there. I don’t see how you manage with all the overhead.1.00....................for one of [1387]'s booklets to be sent to the address below.36.00…[Total]Please have them send this booklet at once as it is a temporary address.
I will send the money for the reading right away too if you think I should have it. If you think I would get no help I think I would like to have Marie Sora’s time changed to this time for she will have to run to get home by 3:30.
You know I think I was really relieved when I decided I was not staying here. Still it was a good experience for me. I have learned a lot and gotten paid while I was learning. I hope I have contributed something.
Must write another letter now so bye-bye.
I hope you got a rest and are taking care of yourself. If you need a rest cancel my appointment and rest that day. Give my love to all and
Heaps of love to you, [2487]
P.S. I think I can get back to N.Y. by the time the appointment is, in case I have the reading. I’d even try to get to Va. Beach if it wasn’t wartime & gov’t trying to keep us off trains etc. As it seems more to the point to stay home and give something to the association.
R12. 8/16/44 EC’s ltr. to Miss [2487]:
Miss [2487] Akron, Ohio
Dear [2487]
I have yours of the 13th. I ought to have answered your note some time ago, but as you doubtless know, I have been away, trying to get to feeling better, and making a poor job of it. I came home a week ago feeling much worse than when I went away. Not in any shape to carry on. Disappointing so many, and with the requests that keep on coming, it doesn’t make me feel any better.
Of course I am sorry that you are disappointed at how things are not working out, there. I am not very much surprised, for from what I gathered from the reading, you were stepping into a field of activity in which you could not give the most, and in which you would be the least happy, though it might have worked if you had the right sort of ones to do business with.
Yes, you have an appointment for the afternoon of August 29. I don’t know, but I think you had better keep the time, if we are able to do anything about it. I have been out of the running for so long that I don’t know who is going to get them, and who is not, but get your questions together if you want to keep the period, and we will see what we can do. Whether it will give you anything specific as to character of dissertation, I don’t know. If you are going to tackle the reading on the problem, it possibly would be better to consider that alone. Unless it should happen to fit in with the Atlantean, I doubt that you would get much on the problem, though that might be the very one, you know.
Well, they can say what they will, [2487], but one that has the degree makes an impression, even though you may have a degree and work under someone who hasn’t. I don’t know why the information insisted on your getting the degree, but it must be for some special reason.
Thanks a lot for the enclosed check for Active membership; the contribution was put in the Sponsorship Fund, and the booklet was sent to the address you enclosed.
You decide, yourself, whether you want to give the time to someone else. It is altogether, as you possibly have figured out for yourself, how you ask the questions as to what sort of answers and how far the answers will go. Let us just hope I will be able to give the reading when the time comes. Just at the present time, I would doubt it very much. Maybe it is just as well that you are not really anxious about it. Everybody who looks at me says, “you look so tired!” but I’m not doing anything, but worrying. Can you tell me how to keep from that?
If you have the reading - or don’t - come down to the Beach.
With lots of love, Eddie [EC:gp]

Dear “eddie”:
I have been thinking of you a lot today. If good wishes could make you better you should be feeling better.
Now is there something I can do? Really I’d get to the Beach someway if I thought I could do anything worthwhile.
I could only stay a day or so if I did come though as school is beginning so soon. I think it would be much more sensible for me to stay home and make a gift to the association. I prefer, however, to do something for you personally.
For instance I might better pay your carfare to N.Y. than to pay mine to the Beach. Then you could take some treatments at Riley’s and maybe they would help you. There are many people in N.Y. who would like to have you visit them. I wish I had a suitable place for I would rather have you than anyone. Now I really mean this offer. What do you say???
I have had a quiet day resting. Will have a busy week and go to N.Y. next week.
Do let me know how you feel. Can’t you dictate lying down? I mean dictate lying down while you are awake.
Much love, [2487]

Miss [2487] …, N.Y.
Dear [2487]
Thanks a lot for yours of the 20th. Well, I am still sitting up - not taking much nourishment - and not too much work! Just fuming and fretting - I don’t know whether I am getting well or not. The Readings say I just need rest and to keep quiet, and I think the only way to make me keep quiet is to knock me in the head.
I certainly appreciate, [2487] what you say. I wish I knew what to tell anybody what to do. Trouble is, everybody is telling me what to do, and of course you know I don’t obey anybody. Even the readings bawl me out.
I try to do a little work now and then, for as the doctors say who examined me - I am not sick, just tired - but I don’t know. I am in hopes that I will soon be feeling a lot better, and be able to carry on. Most of all, let us hope that the war will be over and Hugh Lynn will be home, and I will have somebody to at least blame it off on. Poor Hugh Lynn!
I wish I could get to New York, and just had enough money to sit down in some hotel and just rest and not let anybody know I was there. But I guess that would be impossible, because no man lives to himself, or dies to himself. If you would break that down and see what it means, you would be surprised!
I do hope things worked out for you in Akron, and that when you get back to your work in Jersey you will be better satisfied. What has become of [1387]? Haven’t heard from her in a long time.
Write whenever you can. Thanks for everything, and with lots of love, Eddie [EC:gp]
R15. 8/25/44 Letter: I am enclosing a copy of the questions I would like asked if you can give the reading… I hope you are better. More because I want you to get well than because I want the reading, though I would like the reading.
In my last reading I was directed to complete the degree and to take another subject for the required dissertation.
Please direct what subject or problem I should take for this dissertation?
Please give explicit directions as to how I should proceed in finding the problem, getting the material and having it approved?
Is there any direction or advice that can be given at this time as to my future work?
Is there any other advice that can be given at this time?
R16. 4/18/63 GD’s note: Miss [2487] is still teaching in N.J. and is looking forward to her retirement soon, when she can spend more time on research work and writing. Although I do not believe she ever got the Ph.D., she has written several things that have gotten published. She has also remained an active, supporting member of A.R.E. all these years.
