GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief for this body. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2499].
-
As we find, conditions here may be materially aided. While it will require consistency and persistency, if there will be administered the concerted and coordinant activity, help may be brought to the muscular forces as hindered in their activity through the lower extremities and the right portion of the body.
-
These are the conditions as we find them with this body, [2499] we are speaking of:
-
There has existed for some time back a condition in the coccyx and the lumbar areas in which pressures upon the locomotories and to the brush end of the cerebrospinal system affect indirectly and directly the right portion of the body.
-
Hence we find that these pressures exist in the LEFT area of the coccyx and the lumbar axis.
-
To be sure, these at varied times have varied effects upon the body. More recently these have gradually begun to affect other portions of the body.
-
That there has not begun the withering or the cutting off entirely of the circulation indicates that helpful forces may be given.
-
As various effects are accomplished in the system, these will require changes.
-
A great deal of that existing in the present is gradually becoming static. Hence there will be required periods of administrations only to aid in relaxing the muscular forces, to break up the lesions, as well as the congestions formed about portions of the segments of the body. This condition and this congestion must necessarily, then, be taken into consideration, - that it be liquified or so broken up as to allow for eliminations to carry these off. This, with the inability of activity of the body, as combined with the slowing of peristaltic movement and thus the poor eliminations, must be considered.
-
As we find, then, - every day except one day of the week (say Thursday, and on that day we would use another compound), we would massage the cerebrospinal system with Peanut Oil; very thoroughly, all that the body will absorb. Begin at the head and go down either side of the spinal column, and especially at the brachial center - or that area between the shoulders, and that area across the small of the back, and to the end of the spine. This had best be done of an evening, so that when the sponge bath is given of mornings there will not be left those refuse forces making it hard for the body respiratory reaction.
-
Do not give this massage as something to be hurried through with, but take thirty to forty minutes to massage all that the body will absorb. Pour the Peanut Oil into a saucer, dip the fingers into it and massage gently, in a rotary motion.
-
On each Thursday evening, instead of the Peanut Oil, we would use another compound - prepared in this manner:
-
To 6 ounces of Russian White Oil, add - in the order named:
Oil of Pine Needles…1 ounce, Oil of Mustard…1/4 ounce, Oil of Sassafras Root…1/2 ounce.
Shake these together before the compound is poured in an open container, for these will tend to separate as it sets in the container, see? This would be massaged more specifically over the sacral and lumbar areas, and the brachial center; while the Peanut Oil would be massaged thoroughly over ALL the cerebrospinal system and the limbs also; lower limbs, especially around the knee, or under the knee, and the feet and ankles.
-
Then be mindful of the eliminations. Have at least one evacuation from the alimentary canal every day.
-
If it is necessary, use enemas to assist in better eliminations. This is much preferable to taking cathartics.
-
If there is the necessity of cathartics, use the mineral salts, - as Sal Hepatica; for it will be more effective through a sluggish colon.
-
Use those foods that are laxative in their nature; that is, as stewed raisins, figs, prunes, - these may be dried or the fresh figs when they are obtainable. Otherwise, dried figs, prunes, prune juices, prune whip and the like.
-
Keep away from any quantities of meats. If any meats are taken, take only fish, fowl or lamb, and never any of these fried.
-
No fried foods at all.
-
Have a great deal of fruit and raw vegetables. These are to be the characters of food taken.
-
Do not take white breads or great quantities of starches.
-
Do these for eight weeks, and then we would give the further instructions according to how great has been the response to the applications as indicated here, and as to that necessary for bringing further corrective measures.
-
But do not give part and not all! In eight weeks we will give further instructions, - if there is the response.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What should be done for the cramps and drawing when it occurs? (A) Do these things indicated for the eight weeks; then we would give further instructions.
-
We are through for the present.
Copy to Mother ” ” Ass’n file
(Let us know when you have followed these for eight weeks, so we can make appointment for Ck. Physical.
By what name do the doctors call her condition?)

Dear Mr. Cayce,
Have received your letter of instructions and also your letter.
I felt very much interested, and began at once to get the different things called for, with the hope of being able to begin Monday 26 with the massage but have failed to get it all to my satisfaction. I failed to find peanut oil, though I’ve tried in three different drugstores, the Druggist told me olive oil was the same but I wanted your advice if not the same advise me where to get it. When I called for, Russian White Oil they give me Mineral Oil said that was the same. Please advise me at once as I’m anxious to begin.
Shall I give the Massage and sponge when she is menstruating which is every month and about 2 or 8 days.
Respectfully Mrs. […], …, Tenn.
R2. 5/31/41 EC’s letter advising securing Peanut Oil from Planters Peanut Co., Suffolk, Va., if not then to use Olive Oil; also to substitute Nujol or Usoline for the Russian White Oil if not available - “they are near the same.”
R3. 7/12/41 Mother’s letter:
…, Tenn.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
In complying with your request, to let you know from time to time how our patient is, I will have been using the remedy 4 weeks Tues. 13th it was such a long time before we could get the things all together but finally did and have been using as directed.
It is almost impossible to have a free elimination without a purgative other than salaptica [Sal Hepatica], which tends to bind rather than to assist. I hardly know whether she is any better or not she can use her right foot a very little better and her right hand no better so I can’t tell if the little improvement is permanent as she has gotten better at times before then worse again. She hasn’t had that jerking and drawing in her mouth and right side, to speak of, since before we begun using the medicine.
I am not discouraged but want to try on as long as you think is advisable, the 8 weeks and longer if necessary. It has been so long that I don’t remember the name by which the Dr. called this trouble, but it was degenerated nerves.
I’ll write again later on, if there is any suggestions let me hear from you.
Respectfully Mrs. […]
P.S. I want to know if it is better to use her hand all she possibly can or let it rest, she can move her hand and arm, put her hand up to her head or any where but can’t lift anything or feed herself with her right hand.
R4. 7/17/41 EC’s ltr. to Mrs. […]:
Dear Mrs. […]
Have yours of the 12th - thank you for letting me hear. Hope by this time you are seeing some real help. Of course, this trouble has been of such long standing, will take time as you are trying to correct the cause as well as the trouble. Have you ever tried giving Oil enemas when bowels won’t move? Use either Usoline - or any good mineral oil, or Peanut oil, about 1/2 pint should be sufficient; or if that doesn’t have any effect - than take - cream of tartar, spread on gauze dry, lay over bowels and abdomen, then spread a wet, heavy towel over that, warm. That will start eliminations when nothing else will - they will have to be kept up if she is to get any better, as you know.
Yes - use her hand if she can, but do not over tire the body at any time. After the ten weeks of the use of the suggestions, wish to check up on the condition and see what the reading has to say - whether to try and go on or what.
Thanking you and hoping for the best - and all in HIS name,
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
R5. 8/2/41 Mother’s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce
Received your letter of July 17th.
Thought I’d write you that the 8 weeks (which you stated in the reading) will be up the 12th of August, but in your last letter you said, 10 weeks shall I go on 10 weeks or Just the 8 which you suggested when you gave the reading. When you think it proper time for another reading let us know.
We have carried out your suggestions, I think, correctly, and in some ways I think she is improved slightly, her bowels are in good conditions, it might be her right foot slightly better at times the twitching is scarcely ever felt, but is weak as ever and her right hand is worse.
We appreciate hearing from you at any time.
Respectfully Mrs. […], …, Tenn.
R6. 8/15/41 Mother submitted questions, including these which did not get asked:
“What will improve her equilibrium? Can anything be done to improve the condition of her kidneys? I think they act too often.”

This daughter [2499] in growing up seemed strong and robust. In her early twenties she had a light appearance of this trouble, such as dropping things out of her hands, she over came this for about 3 years then after her first baby came the trouble came back much worse, and by the time her second baby came which was eleven months from first she could not walk and didn’t have any use or feeling from waist down not even distinguished hot from cold or feel a pin stick, she couldn’t walk for about 30 months, then gradually she grew better till finally she could walk good (but not perfect) for several years, then she began to get worse again and is now so she can’t walk again. Her trouble is worse in her right side, face, hand and feet. At times they cramp and draw can scarcely feed her self, has been constipated for about 16 years which was before her first baby came.
I want to know if you will explain all this trouble and give remedy? If there is any hope, please give remedy plainly.
