GC: You will have before you LaSalle County, Texas, Survey #48, in the Catulla Township, near San Antonio, Texas, and the stake on that property for the drilling of a water well. You will tell us if there is terrazzo sand under this section survey, and if so in what quantity; also the depth of the sand, and if it is water bearing. You will answer the questions that may be asked.
-
EC: Yes, we have LaSalle County, Texas, Catulla Township, Section forty-eight.
-
As we find, in the immediate surroundings where there have been those prospecting, and where a stake is shown, while the water sand is under this portion or section of this survey, unless these are taken to the greater depths where there may be the overflow from the fault that comes through the section, this would not be in sufficient quantity to insure the sufficient supply for the prospective activities in the vicinity. But to the eleven to thirteen hundred foot level there may be had the sufficient quantity for ANY project in this vicinity.
-
(Q) How much water per minute would be produced at that depth on property where the stake now is? (A) About forty thousand gallons a minute.
-
(Q) What other minerals, if any, are on the property? (A) None as valuable for their production, other than the guano shale in portions of the section - to the south and west.
-
(Q) Any oil? (A) Not in sufficient quantity to make the production of same worth while in the present.
-
(Q) What would this soil grow to the best advantage and largest returns? (A) Vegetables; especially celery, cauliflower, eggplant, pepper, cabbage, potatoes - these are the better. Of course, lentils and those of the legume nature would be very good; particularly the three first named.
-
(Q) Is the C. W. Beck project to build homesteads and grow the produce to make the property self-supporting a good one? (A) This would be good with many provisions in same; that there would be a cooperative growing, cooperative marketing, and cooperative outlet. But this would require that there be specific directions in these various ways or channels.
-
(Q) Will he be able to interest the proper people to join him in developing the property along the lines that he suggests? (A) This might be made a portion of the development by the manner in which not only there is the outlet but the associations that would be made by the gathering of the characterizations of those surrounding the project. These, to be sure, would necessitate first the selection of those that would be the central idea or theme, as it might be called, for such a project; and then the various individuals and groups interested. This cannot be made, of course, too much of what would be called the universal - which would make for the detriment in FAST selling or fast exchanging, in this particular sort of project. But it can be made to work IN TIME! And yet for the activities of Beck, a project that becomes a drag is soon thrown aside.
-
(Q) When should this project be begun? (A) This depends upon whether or not there’s to be a project! First there must be those abilities to supply the facilities, and then there may be the considering of the project. First there must be not only the lands and the supply of the water and of the connections and associations, from all manner of the transportations and connections, but the tests for the facilitating of activities of the nature that would make such a proposition being worth while.
Some sections, as we find, in Arizona or New Mexico, offer much more prospects for such than in this particular portion of Texas; though the surroundings and the climatic conditions - the accessibility to many of the outlets for transportation and for the activity and location - tend to make this particular project more in accord here. However, from the PRODUCTIVE end - if that is to be dwelt upon - Arizona or New Mexico would offer greater possibilities. From the social end and from the connections and facilities for handling these, this becomes a better project. All of these should be weighed and considered. In the one there must be MADE the prospects for the water, for the territory, for the surroundings, for the connections. In the other, they are already made.
-
(Q) About how long will it take to develop it in accordance with Beck’s plan? (A) About three years.
-
(Q) What can [257] do to assist in the picture? (A) Depends upon how it’s to be handled and what is to be the proposition, and all. These should be the first considerations: CAN there be supplied all those facilities for making this the more desirable place? See? The climatic conditions are right. The other conditions are not as favorable as in other places. And it depends upon the purpose of the project, as to whether it is to be merely self-sustaining - with the facilities for all the activities of any groups or individuals that might make either a temporary or a partial residence, or of a permanent nature, or as to whether it’s to be turned to the use during the declining years - or whether for some special project. This should be determined FIRST! The idea is very good, but it hasn’t been made clear in the minds yet of those who would propose such. Make these clear in themselves first!
-
We are through for the present.

R1. 12/23/34 [257]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Judge:-
It is just the hour of midnight - on the up - and up - it is now another Christmas Eve day - and as I look back over the year and years - and begin to check accomplishments - I finally decide that all we really have is our family - and maybe one or two good friends - and then I look over the friendships - and finally decide that the man who said “whosoever has one man he can call friend - that man is rich indeed” - so tonight I feel like a millionaire - because I know I do have one friend - and one that has been tried over the period of a quarter of a century - and for that reason tonight when all is quiet - I sit down to chat with you for a while. We seem never to be able to do it any more. Your time is always so sought for - and the problems so great - that my mind is always trying to work out a plan or plans to make things easier for you and yours - that we never get time to be personal anymore. Well, it was funny about C. W. Beck and his Texas plan. He is sincere - and will probably want to talk more about it. He wants you to come to New York when he’s here after the first of the year. You hit him right - if he gets water like you said - well we will all go to Texas. He is anxious to help us - and once we get started in Texas we will all be there - and I believe we would be happy there too.
Well I am meeting daily on the factory matter - we have a meeting today at 2:45 - at the bank - I will write you later on the results. I feel that we have gained in this year - not lost - we have made new and better friends - the work is in better shape - and if I can but get started - where the finances are easier for us both - we will accomplish big things. We had them - but did not know what to do with them. We have had many heartaches - but much happiness has come to us in seeing others helped by you - to do better - to live better - to be better. You have prolonged life - you have made the blind see - the cripple walk - to the weak you have given faith and to the strong you have given “desire” to help others - so what more can life offer? My little donation is to talk about you; and how I would like to be able to shout from the house tops all the good things I do know about you - and I will some day, and they will listen - my mind runs that way today - then on this day we remember what one man’s birth did to change the history many times of the world - and yet he, they would not let live in peace - but made him suffer - so in our way - how can we kick - but only yearn to do more and more for them and those we love. We must succeed - and the Good Lord will not leave us - he knows our innermost thought - and that no one can mislead him in. We too know it - and need not fear. We will go on and on - serving him - regardless of who attempts to make us stumble or falter. Daily I hear from someone - today Mr. Freeman, Dr. Coombs - others have called wanting to know when you expect to return. Mother is a little better today - still very weak - she will get a battery - she had one - but [2653] took it to Reilly and they said it was no good - I don’t know how they know - I wonder if it’s the same battery? [See 325-52.]
I am going to G.E. Thursday morning to see them. It is again where it was eight years ago - and you said I could sell them
- you also said they again would buy and here they are - so altho not coming as fast as we would like - I have absolute faith things will work out.
I will follow along this path - I am sure we will not fail - I can see a lot of reasons for everything that has happened.
R2. 12/24/34 [257]‘s letter to EC: Well we had a meeting today - to be continued in the A.M. of Wednesday. Thompson, Dunn and Goldman - the latter owns the plant so I will know better then what the next move is to be - we believe we will then go to the Federal reserve - and if unsuccessful then to RFC - so the meeting is off until Wednesday.
I am sorry about the [632] child - but you told them what to expect and have done all that you could and more than a brother could have done. You gave of your self, your time, your energy when sorrow filled your own soul and that of your family - and that is the most wonderful of all spirits - the Good Lord will not forget true and faithful servants - who do for the pure love of serving. We have all felt terrible about Lynn [Wm. Lynn Evans, Gertrude’s brother.] - and have grieved about it. Do you think I am in order to write to the new President of the L and N - and see if I cannot bring the family to the attention of the road? for the memory of a worthy and faithful builder of the line for the past twenty years. Give me the years he was with them - and a little of his work and I believe I can do it right with no embarrassment - it may help; it cannot harm I am sure.
Well Judge - today is the anniversary of my father’s passing and it’s the happy day for the boys as tomorrow their trinkets, slim as they are, will await them - so that is life
- one’s sorrow is another’s happiness - let’s hope that this year will bring nothing but happiness and no sorrow - no heartaches - but success in action - accomplishment - in friendships. This is our year I believe - and you can depend that I shall put forth every effort - to bring us all happiness.
Let me know what I can do further. I hope all of your family is enjoying good health and that Gertrude will soon [sense] the kindly hand of the Maker making her path easier - in the memory of the Love that she and Lynn bore for one another.
Write me soon - and I will keep you posted - when do you expect to return to New York? What are your plans?
[903], [759] and [773] join me in sending to you and yours our Love - and best wishes for a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
As always,
Sincerely, [257]
