This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 3rd day of September, 1941, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [2582], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mr. Thomas Sugrue.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. [2582].]
Time of Reading 3:40 to 4:00 P. M. Eastern Daylight Savings Time. Wash., D.C.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2582].
-
As we find, physical conditions are very good in the main.
-
There ARE some inclinations and disturbances in a direction that might become aggravating, unless corrected in the immediate.
-
These as we find have especially to do with the thyroid gland and its activity, and the secretions of same and their activity through the whole of the body.
-
With the rest of the system we find conditions very good save as they are influenced by this nature of condition, from some disturbances caused from or by this reaction.
-
We find that from same the blood supply is at times irregular, as to the pressure and as to the pulsation.
-
There are times when the nerve forces of the body become easily tired, so that there are those inclinations for conditions - after periods of rest - to cause more anxiety than pain, about the head, throat, and at times through the digestive forces of the body; even reflecting in the activity of other glandular forces as related to eliminations at Periods.
-
All of these, though, as we find, come as a culmination or combination of the effects arising from this insufficient activity.
-
Thus with the periods such as have been a part of the experience, when a great deal of sun and a great deal of the activity about sea, sand and sun is experienced, we find that the reactions are excellent for the body - IF there is not a tendency to overdo same.
-
But we find that the better help, the better aid for overcoming these disturbances would be to take Atomidine for some three to five series; one minim (drop) in a glass of water each morning before breakfast for ten days. Then leave off five days. Then take for another series. Do this for at least three to four series.
-
Be mindful that there are the diets that carry full quantities of the vitamins that aid in the strength and body-building. These will be found in cereals, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, carrots, and all forms of the raw vegetables. These should be a considerable part of the body’s diet.
-
Something like a week to two weeks after the last series of the Atomidine, we would begin (not before) and take ADIRON regularly; one pellet or tablet each day for a period of fifteen days, leave off five, and then take again - continuing in this manner for a period of at least sixty ninety days. This is a combination of the vital forces as will aid in body-adjustment for this body, with a purified glandular system.
-
Do these and, as we find, we will prevent a great deal of disturbance that may arise, and we will have bettered conditions throughout.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What causes and what should be done to correct general nervous condition which started around seven years ago? (A) This arises from the subluxed or submerged activity of the glandular forces, as indicated. Then, we need to purify the whole of the glandular system in the manner suggested, and then to add to the body-forces those vitamins that will assist in creating a normal balance in the physical forces of the body.
-
(Q) What has caused recent increase of hair on lips, and what should be done to remedy it? (A) This, again, is from an inactivity and the allowing for overactivity in certain portions of the thyroid gland. For, this is the portion, in its balance, that keeps the body-forces in balance, adding to or taking from the system that to aid in the growth of hair, of nails, and in keeping an equilibrium. So, with the corrections of these conditions, and there being then better indications and the correct flow of this glandular secretion, these should gradually disappear. For these conditions are usually such things as to correct the system, not any mechanical or chemical forces to remove these, see?
-
(Q) Should the electric needle be used to remove it? the hair on lips? (A) No indeed!
-
(Q) What causes and what should be done for excessive dryness of skin? (A) This, again, shows the incoordination between the cerebrospinal and the superficial circulation, as indicated by the irregularity in the pulsation at times, which takes or draws a great deal of the flow of circulation from the superficial.
With the taking of the properties indicated, we find that there will be brought about a coordination.
However, - specifically for the dry skin, - we find it would be well once or twice a week to take almost a bath in Peanut Oil, - but this more as a massage, to be sure. A small quantity - say two tablespoonsful - should be enough to make a complete massage. Do this over the whole body. Begin with the temples, the face, neck, shoulders, along the spine, limbs, arms - all parts of the body, and especially give this across the diaphragm area; that is, from the liver - or almost a circular portion of the body, see? This will make a GLOW and a circulation that will be most beneficial.
- (Q) Is horseback riding harmful? (A) Not harmful, but not especially beneficial - until there is a change in the conditions in the glandular forces. A little bit later in the season - six weeks from now - it would be much better for such than in the present.
Walking is the better exercise, as also the head and neck exercises taken morning and evening.
- (Q) What should be done for immediate condition in head, apparently due to excessive sun on last Monday? (A) We would use those very things as we have indicated. But use Olive Oil as the rub in the hair, head, face, neck, arms, see?
Do these, as we find; not as something to be done to be gotten through with, but massage all the body will absorb, see? For this, as it were, is food - and if the Peanut Oil is kept regularly, there will never be - or need never be any fear of neuritic or arthritic tendencies - which, of course, are a natural tendency where there is any glandular disturbance.
-
(Q) Can you recommend cosmetics for face until conditions becomes better? (A) Use the Black and White preparations. These are the most beneficial ones, but the GENUINE Black and White - not Plough’s. And these as we find have less harmful ingredients. [See 2582-1, Par. R1, R7 saying BLK & WHT. a div. of Plough’s, and GENUINE a label only.]
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 12/5/41 (Friday) Miss [2582]‘s ltr. to GD:
Dear Gladys:
Will you please tell me, if possible, where I can buy Adiron tablets? I can’t find any here and I’m supposed to start within a week. I have finished the Atomidine series and expect to have a “check” after I do everything Mr. Cayce prescribed. I cannot find any Black & White products EXCEPT as a byproduct of Plough’s. Each jar I have seen says “Genuine Black & White” and then (Plough’s).
I’m feeling very well and of course, being confident of Mr. Cayce’s help, I naturally should improve because of the psychological reaction of knowing there is nothing serious wrong. I feel the Atomidine has been helpful and the old nervousness is fast disappearing, so that by the time I complete the Adiron series, I should be a super-woman!
Sorry to trouble you at this busy time, but I’ll be waiting to hear from you. [2582]
R2. 2/7/42 Miss [2680], coming for a Physical Rdg. on advice of Miss [2582], remarked: “[2582] says she feels like a new person since following her reading.”
R3. 8/2/42 (Sunday) Miss [2582]‘s ltr. to GC:
Dear Mrs. Cayce:
I’m anxious to subscribe for 2 copies of “There Is A River”
- one a copy for myself - the other to be a gift for a friend for Christmas.
Being such an old friend of Tom’s and having benefitted by my reading of last summer, you can imagine how excited I am over the prospective sale. I want you and Mr. Cayce to know that I have benefitted tremendously in his advice on my health and I hope to get to the Beach this month or next for a “check.”
I have interested another friend [2805] who may come for a reading this fall.
My girl friend, [2680], who had a reading last fall or early winter left yesterday for foreign duty with the Red Cross.
R4. 8/4/42 EC’s ltr. to Miss [2582]:
Dear [2582]
Your order for the two books received - even tho you are a good friend of Tom’s feel very much complemented by your order. But, from Tom’s statement in the notice about the book you are safe, for - if you don’t find it interesting he will buy it back and eat it besides. But, thanks very much for your report, am glad you have found your information of help. Be sure and come in and see us when you get down, and we will be glad to try and be of help for you friend if they can get here. We are all very well - both boys are married now, so we have two lovely daughters now. Edgar Evans and his wife were here two days last week and have gone on to Fla. where he will be for a while in training. So, your friend has gone - destination unknown. Many of your young people will be like that. May right and justice prevail as we are all sure it will.
Thanks again and hoping to see you next week
With every good wish
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce

R6. 9/5/42 See 2582-2, her second Physical.
R7. 1/12/42 GD’s ltr. to Miss [2582]:
Dear [2582]
On December 9th I had a bottle of Adiron sent to you from Meredith’s, our local druggist - $1.10 and c.o.d. charges. Was this alright, and did you receive it in time to begin at the proper period?
Yes, a Genuine Black and White Company was such a competitor that evidently the Plough’s had to buy it. Plough’s did have some products on the market that came in a red tin can. No doubt they have now taken this off the market and concentrated on the Genuine, which is all to the good - since the Readings have continually said that the Genuine Black and White Products were the purest cosmetics on the market. [GD’s note: See Par. R8—R12 [below] indicating Plough’s was the original Co. & Blk. & White was always a division of it; the word GENUINE being a part of the labeling only.]
I hope you are feeling loads better now and that the bad weather hasn’t gotten you “down.” The Adiron should build you up so you won’t take the flu, at least.
We hear from Tom and Mary quite often. Hugh Lynn and Sally plan to go down there for a visit soon, to help him put some finishing touches to the book on Mr. Cayce’s life - which is now ready except for a few changes suggested by the publisher. They seem to be getting on fine in Florida. Patsy is going to kindergarten and loves it. No doubt you have heard from Mary, either direct or through her mother. I know she has a VERY busy life these days. Just taking care of Tom is practically a full-time job, and then with the house and Patsy I know there just isn’t time for ANYTHING extra.
Please pardon me for this great delay in answering your letter. There are so many little dinky things I have to do that sometimes it is hard to know which to do first, and then I let something slide that should have been attended to at once.
With very best wishes for the New Year, and hoping you will let us hear from you as to how you progress, I am
Sincerely, [signed] Gladys Davis

Dear Mr. […]:
We appreciate the opportunity to review the statements concerning BLACK AND WHITE products, and are glad to correct them.
These BLACK AND WHITE products were originally by Plough, Inc., approximately fifty years ago and were never purchased from an outside concern. We are, therefore, somewhat a loss as to the reference to the original manufacture by a BLACK AND WHITE Company in Chicago. As far as we are concerned, the BLACK AND WHITE Company has always been a division of Plough, Inc.
We trust that this information will be helpful to you in your promotion and that you are most successful in your endeavors.
Sincerely yours,
PLOUGH, INC.

Dear Mr. […]:
In keeping with your telephone request today, I am pleased to advise that the BLACK AND WHITE COMPANY was originated by and continues as a division of PLOUGH, INC. Our product labels still reflect the word “genuine”, such as “Genuine Black and White Ointment”, “Genuine Black and White Soap”, and so forth, with which I am sure you are familiar, having handled these products. In the past, our labels did reflect the city of Chicago, Illinois.
For your further information, PLOUGH, INC. is the owner of extensive trademark registration upon the Principal Register of the United States Patent Office of the trademark BLACK AND WHITE dating back to the early 1900’s. If we can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to call upon the writer, and we wish you good fortune in the continuing sale of our products.
Very truly yours,
PLOUGH, INC.

Mr. William E. Bush Legal Director Plough, Inc. Box 377 Memphis, TN 38101
Dear Mr. Bush:
Several of our approximately 13,000 members have asked us questions from time to time concerning your Black and White Products that, based on current information, we are unable to answer.
The late Edgar Cayce, of whom you may have heard, recommended the Black and White Products bearing a Chicago label. We would like to have you answer the following specific questions for the benefit of our members: Are the currently-manufactured Black and White cleansing cream, cold cream, vanishing cream or ointment made exactly the same way as they were in the period from 1933-1940 (when Cayce recommended them), and furthermore, did any or all of the above mentioned items bear the Chicago label during that period?
We realize that this may involve considerable “digging into the files” for your staff, but we would certainly appreciate your efforts. If these questions are answered, it may mean additional sales of your products.
Sincerely, Robert O. Clapp, Director, Membership Services [ROC/bll]

Attention: Robert O. Clapp, Director
Gentlemen:
We are in receipt of your letter of October 28, 1969, requesting information concerning the BLACK & WHITE Products of this company.
There have been no basic formulation changes in our BLACK and WHITE Products; however, as you can appreciate certain other changes have taken place as a result of advanced manufacturing techniques and in our never ending desire to improve product quality.
I shall be unable to answer your question relating to labeling, as to do so would require extensive searching into our historical files would entail considerable time and effort since these files are sealed for permanent storage and not readily accessible.
We trust that the foregoing will be of some assistance to you.
Very truly yours,
PLOUGH, INC.

R12. 3/70 Memo to Robert O. Clapp, A.R.E. Membership Department:
Black and White Products
We frankly don’t know if the Black & White Products are the same as those recommended in 1925 - 1944 by Edgar Cayce. An official of Plough, Inc. states that there was never a separate Black & White Company in Chicago, but that for many years some of the Black & White Products bore a Chicago label, because of Plough’s product warehouse facilities in that city. An official of the Illinois State Corporation Commission says there is no record of a “Black & White Company” in Chicago.
Officials at Plough have stated that they do not know if the present products ever bore the Chicago label or if product formulation changes have occurred since Cayce’s day.
This undoubtedly raises more questions than it answers but that is all the information we have at present. Perhaps another Edgar Cayce will come along and tell us the answers! In the meantime everyone will have to decide for himself. If you want more detailed information, the man to write to is

There still seems to be confusion about the Black and White Company, Chicago. Probably we will never know what the true circumstances were. You might like to add to your letter in 2582-1 the attached correspondence [see above] that […] and I had with the B. & W. Co. in ‘69 & ‘70. ROC
