GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [259]; this we have had before.
-
As we find, there are in the present very good physical conditions in many ways. Yet, there are those specific that may or may not react to correcting themselves.
-
Through external influence a pressure has been produced in that area from the 4th dorsal through the 6th, that is impairing the flow of impulse to those areas across the body here. This has not as yet formed a lesion. Exercise of activities to produce the more perfect alignment MAY bring about corrective forces. Yet, detrimental influences are being wrought in the splenic nerve center as well as under the right shoulder blade, as to affect the assimilating of certain food elements for the body.
-
Hence the pains that occur at times in these areas.
-
As we find, the better way of correction would be to have at least two general osteopathic adjustments; these to be gently done, especially in the area of the upper dorsals - as indicated; coordinating the rest of the cerebrospinal centers with same - especially through the sacral and lumbar, and in the whole of the cervical area. DO have at least two general treatments, with the correcting of these areas indicated.
-
After such corrections have been made, we would begin with regular exercise of morning before dressing, and of evening when ready to retire; especially of this nature:
-
Mornings - with plenty of air in the room, standing, stretch the body to the full height. Rise on toes and at the same time gently raise the arms, so that there is the exercise of the muscular forces as well as the raising of the structural portion of the body. Standing erect, on the toes and with the arms outstretched, swing the body gently (with the hands high above head) to the left, - once, twice. Gently relax, - rise again the same way and then swing to the right, - once, twice.
-
Evenings - Rise on the toes, extending hands high above head, and then bend forward - so that the hands almost touch the floor.
-
Do this and we will make the better activity of the sinew and muscles of the nerves and the tissue along the whole of the area.
-
There are also those tendencies for too much sugar being created in the system, forming overweight.
-
Refrain from sweets.
-
DO take grape juice four times each day (Welch’s, preferably). Stir two ounces of grape juice in one ounce of plain water (not carbonated water) thirty minutes before each meal and before retiring.
-
Be careful in certain combinations. Do not take white bread, white potatoes and spaghetti all at the same meal. These may be taken in moderation if taken separately and distributed through the meals of the week. But if these are refrained from, as well as too much of sweets, it will bring nearer the normal weight for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 1/16/42 She wrote: “The reading came in this morning, and armed with it, at noon, I went down to a doctor here and had one of the adjustments. He read it carefully, but made no comment, except to ask nature of pains experienced. He says there are still a rib or so dislocated in that left side - something popped when he went to work on it. And he also says that according to his ideas a lesion has formed, but that it can be broken up because it is recent. Anyhow, I feel much better knowing that I didn’t wait too long. I’m going back up to see him (Dr. Meredith White, 1st Nat’l Bank bldg. here) Tuesday of next week, and then possibly a recheck several weeks later, if it is needed.
“A peculiar thing happened - I may be putting meaning into coincidences, but during the time set on the 13th I was sitting apart thinking over things, and this little boy came back, a total stranger to me and asked me to come play with him. He had the blackest eyes that just sparkled. When he was ready to go, he kissed me and wanted to know when he could come back.
“Starches - hmmm - ‘spect they do have lots to do with my weight, though I try to keep them down. Will do better from now on.
“I’m marrying [H…] Sunday afternoon [1/18/42].”
R2. 8/4/42 She wrote about trying to keep busy while her husband was away in the Service, and then about being treated by Dr. Sellers, eye, ear, nose and throat specialist: “Dr. Sellers, whom I had paint my throat the other day because it was sore seems to think I’m a miracle or some sort for I still gain weight even though I have a new set of tonsils that will have to come out as soon as they get big enough to see. He is hoping that my system will absorb them. He asked if I had ever taken iodine and when I told him about Atomidine - he put me back on it. He seems to be of the opinion that there’s a vitamin deficiency too. All work gratis, or rather professional courtesy. I go by his office once a week and let him check over my diet the past week and advise me. He’s only doing it to distract my mind from worry - regardless of what he says to the contrary. For right after [H…] left, I sent a patient to him for ocular treatment, and he called and asked me to drop by and discuss the case. When I walked in to the office, he wanted to know who had stolen my pet balloon. Evidently I looked plenty dejected. He seems to be of the opinion that if he can get me interested in imaginary or real complaints, I won’t worry. I try not to worry, but it is mostly involuntary. Dr. is a good egg, and his plan may even succeed - it’s fun at any rate and surely does no harm, for he makes me watch my diet - had me keep a list of everything I ate for a week or so to see what foods to cut out and which to add. He keeps after me worse than an old hen with one chick. He isn’t supposed to handle such cases, since he is a specialist (eye, ear, nose and throat) but when I told him I had no “family doctor” here in … he took the job himself. And I do eat, when I probably wouldn’t, if I didn’t have to make a report to him. Even so, I still weigh 140. The golf will probably take another ten pounds off before the summer is over and that will be better. I went back by Dr. White’s to let him make a third check on my back and he says things are straight - except for a rib that won’t stay put. He pops it back one day and two days later it jumps. Maybe we should make a place for it where it usually stays.”
R3. 9/8/42 She wrote: “I still am of the opinion that Dr. Sellers is treating me primarily to keep me thinking about myself and not let me think of other things too much. He fixed up some stuff known as cotton extract and is dosing me on that along with Hydrochloric acid and Iodide. One thing sure, no more gas pains, though I think it is due to my stretching exercise as much as anything else. Oh, well, we’ll see what comes up this time. The tonsils are trying their darnedest to grow back…my throat stays red and rawish, and if I drink anything too quick and it slides the wrong way, it burns like the devil.
“But I’ll live.”
R4. 10/6/42 She wrote: “Welch’s Grape Juice has triumphed again! The rdg. in Jan. put me on it and since then I’ve lost fifteen lbs. It was gradual enough so that it was hardly noticeable but when I stepped on the scales at Dr. Sellers’ yesterday we just couldn’t believe it. Dr. made me get off and he checked the scales for balance to be sure it was right. He’s very pleased with my throat’s progress, though I’ve had just enough of a cold to keep it irritated. He’s watching closely to avoid any contagion. Conditions here aren’t of the best as to sanitation and there’s quite a few cases of strep throat.”
R5. 1/19/43 She wrote: “Dr. David Sellers has been painting my throat for me very time the weather changes. He put me back on Atomidine. When I told him I had taken it before, he wanted to know why I quit… He is anxious to read your book THERE IS A RIVER…seems that he had heard of your work elsewhere and is anxious to find out more. He will, if I have anything to do with it.”
R6. 3/6/43 She wrote: “Am just up again from the flu. I was dosed up on sulfathiazole and kept on liquids. I’m still a bit weakish on my legs but I’ve been up three days now and think I’ll make it.”
R7. 4/6/43 She wrote: “I’m feeling much better. So much better, that I think I’ll live and do well. Just between you and me I think most of my ailments are from the neck up just because I have so much idle time to think. Since, I’ve been busy with the house and things, I haven’t had so much spare time; consequently, I have no aches and pains. Well, at least not the kind I once thought I had. In one of the readings about fourteen years ago, the statement was made, “More physical exercise is indicated. Of that nature which tends to tire the muscles and relax the mind.” And that still holds good for me. You know - if I’ll just go back and go by those old readings, they fit precisely into the present situation - maybe not in the tonics and all given, but the diet suggested, and the exercises given, and the general routine - I know that’s what I need - So I guess I’d better do it.”
R8. 8/19/43 She wrote: “In Jan. a year ago I was too heavy. Well, all of a sudden I started shedding lbs., along with buckets of pure sweat, and now the folks are saying I’m too thin. I do need to gain about ten lbs., for I’ve lost 25 lbs. since May, for no apparent reason. Blood pressure is low which keeps me feeling fagged out, but double doses of vitamins and a qt. of milk a day and I should have that licked soon. Now if I can only manage to strike a happy medium on the scales, all will be well.”
R9. 9/23/43 She wrote: “I weigh 125 lbs. now. As long as I eat regularly and feel pretty good, I’ll let the scales worry about themselves… I ran into Dr. Sellers on the street the other day and he wanted to know when I was going to quit sending him patients and come in myself. He’s overworked, too, but still had time to wonder how my throat was doing. So far so good - only a little phlegm every morning. He is of the opinion that I’ve grown a second set of adenoids. Dr. C. D. Feulner back home said it looked more like a growth over the tonsil roots, but they both agree there is a growth. As long as it isn’t malignant, I don’t worry about me. Don’t have time to worry about me, anyway - too many other things on my mind.”
R10. 2/11/44 She wrote: “I’m doing fine! Found out that I have too many ‘telegraph wires’ for nerves. Every time something happens that upsets me mentally, or emotionally, I just as well go to bed for a couple of days for my tummy refuses to digest anything under such circumstances. The M.D. here is a very understanding person. I stopped by his office last night just to check up on my weight and chat with him a few minutes. He told me the thing that I’ve known all the time, that my biggest trouble is mental - worrying over things - and not having anyone to talk to… You know that you have always been the one I turned to whenever I came up against something I didn’t know how to handle - but to go back to an old folk song, ‘You’re ‘way up thar’, I’m way down hyar - so I guess I’ll have to stay in the mountains.’ Sometimes those mountains are pretty high.”
R11. 2/12/44 She wrote: “Well, I finally made it over to see Dr. Joe. I’m not any worse, but I’m not any better. The C. E. plan is out until all rasping disappears - also trips, unless I plan to spend all the time I’m away in bed - nice man, Dr. Joe, except when he growls and he really showed his teeth today - I’m holding my own on the weight situation - between 138 and 140 - but the B.P. has slipped down low again, and he wants me to start in checking temperature every evening for a while - and emphasis on the bedrest! Oh well - as long as I don’t lose ground - I still want to go places - had the sweetest letter from up that way - don’t think for one minute that I wouldn’t go if I felt that I could - but there’s two counts against me, and the third one would be out - and frankly, I’m scared to take the chance.”
R12. 3/5/44 Mother [2457]‘s ltr.: “[259] has been and is quite sick…
“She had hemorrhages from her throat Sun. and Mon. She had x-rays that did not show up so good - also the sputum test, which showed up negative. We both know [259] can go just so long without a rest, complete relaxation, and that is what is mainly (so it seems to me) the trouble now… The doctor said she had to stay in bed a month and then he would make more tests…the doctor said ‘feed her heavy’…
“If [3657] - her dad doesn’t come and work in her place as an optometrist, [259] will surely have a nervous upset about her job.”
R13. 3/10/44 EC wrote the mother: “If you will keep her quiet and get hold of a charred oak brandy keg (using apple brandy to inhale), it will do [259] more good than anything else… the brandy keg will not only be antiseptic for the throat, it will keep the trouble out of the lungs and keep the body from absorbing so much. You know how that is fixed, don’t you? I don’t have any doubt but that you know how to give the rubs, because you are a good doctor. Don’t over-stimulate the liver and kidneys, but keep them normal. You know I will get a rdg. for her as soon as possible (I am sitting up and have been trying to catch up with my personal letters at least, but I’m not doing much good).”
R14. 3/23/44 Mother wrote: “[259] is still in bed but has not bled any lately, so that is something. Feed her 3 times a day and drinks between. She looks some better.”
R15. 3/30/44 EC wrote that he was sending the charred oak keg for apple brandy inhaling.
R16. 4/9/44 Miss [259] wrote: “My doctor was so pleased with the progress that I had made, he told Mother he was leaving my case in her hands, she was doing o.k. with it. He still calls to make sure I haven’t done anything rash.”
R17. 6/3/44 She replied in ans. to EC’s invitation to come to the A.R.E. Congress with her mother: “Dr. Joe believes that I had best put off all trips of any kind for a little while. I’ve gained weight, but that’s about all the progress that can be called progress. I’ve wanted a rdg. since I had the first attack, but the first three weeks I was too sick to write you - then when Mother came down and told me how overworked you are, I didn’t see any need to bother you with my petty troubles. I’ve always managed to hang on through curiosity of what could happen next - and that is just as good a reason as any, I guess… Uncle […] is to have the brandy keg in operating condition for me by tomorrow.”
R18. 6/10/44 She wrote: “My keg is quite the berries. I’ve had it in working order for over a week now, and while the fumes burn like all fifty, I do believe they are helping a whole lot. Dr. Joe looks at me with a raised eyebrow when I mention it, but he says whatever will help me the most is what he wants me to do. Of course, the ideal treatment would be to go to bed and stay there for several months - but the effect would be the same as taking a fire horse out of harness, hobbling him, and then clanging the alarm in front of him. As long as I hold my present weight of 140, and don’t cough any more than I do now (usually one coughing spell every twenty-four hours - not that frequently when I take the medicine before hand) I can keep on doing just what I’m doing, but NO MORE. I do know when we have any especially busy day here at the office, I can hardly make it up the steps at the apartment at night - yet on days that aren’t so busy, I feel fairly well when I go home.”
R19. 7/23/44 She wrote: “My doctor laughed when I told him about the keg, but now he’s scratching his head and admitting ‘something’ is doing me a world of good. I’m holding my weight right at 140 - and while there’s some phlegm every morning, there’s very little or no coughing.”
R20. 3/24/45 Mother [2457]‘s ltr. to GD: “[259] was so sick this time last year - I was with her six weeks, but I am glad to say she is fine this year.”
R21. 1/23/46 Mother wrote: “[259] has been in bed since the middle of Dec…
“The doctor won’t let her up for another month and I am here to stay until then. She can’t even get out of bed for bathroom ‘exposures’. Her husband came back after 39 months abroad, mostly in England. He has his old job back with the … Shipbuilding Co., but it was hard for him to keep on the job and see after [259].”
R22. 10/21/46 Mother wrote: “The doctor said [259] could go to work the first of the year. The last x-rays were CLEAR.
That was the best news I have heard in FOUR years when she was taken sick. Don’t remember whether she had a Physical Rdg. [for the T.B.] or whether some directions were given in a letter [EC’s letter advising the charred oak keg brandy fumes], but the all clear sign is out at least.”
R23. 5/26/47 Mother wrote: “April 6th [259] had quite a spell, so I went by bus to … She has varicose veins of the THROAT, and one burst. She was ill for two days. The doctor said she could come back home with me, so we caught the train May 13th and here we are. [259] is in bed most of the time, but is strong enough to sit up a few minutes each day now… She will be here until about the middle of July.”
R24. 12/1/47 Mother wrote: “[259] and husband [H.] were here for Thanksgiving. She has gone back to work AT LAST and is enjoying it.”
R25. 1/14/48 Mother’s ltr.: “[259] and [H.] are expecting a baby the latter part of June…they will have been married six yrs. on Jan. 18th and this is their first.”
R26. 7/4/48 A baby boy was born to them.
R27. 2/14/58 Mother wrote [259] had a 2nd son 5 yrs. old who was an invalid from spinal meningitis when 8 days old.
Background
Background
B1. 2/24/41 She obtained Ck. Physical Rdg. 259-9 for spinal pressure and impacted wisdom tooth.
B2. 12/12/41 She wrote of slipping on waxed floor a week ago and bruising both knees, pinching sciatic nerve.
B3. 1/11/42 She submitted questions: “What causes the sharp, almost stabbing pains that I occasionally experience in the left side, about the 8th rib up, and also in the right shoulder - top and back? Did the recent fall upset my alignment - if so, how shall it be corrected? I would like to cut my weight about fifteen pounds. What suggestions can you offer for this? I now weigh 150 lbs.”
