-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2642].
-
As we find, in giving that as may be helpful or beneficial for this body, many conditions, - physical, mental and spiritual, - must be taken into consideration.
-
For, the disturbances as we find with this body are a complication of disorders which involve all phases of the body, the mind AND the spiritual reactions.
-
Then, in giving the disturbances, we find that these react FROM the physical; and thus are basically physical disturbances. But being of a supersensitive nature, normally, there are mental reactions. And thus all conditions, physical AND mental, must be approached from the correct SPIRITUAL desire.
-
These, then, are the conditions as we find them - physical - with this body, and mental reactions in same:
-
First, - the blood supply indicates the lack of nourishment, and the inability of the system to assimilate same properly from the amounts of foods that have been able to be maintained or retained by the body for its building up.
-
Thus there has continued to be the continuous mental reactions from the aggravating of nerves in and through the body from this source.
-
These, of course, primarily arose from those obstructions in portions of the body that coordinate with mental and physical reactions, not only to the bodily functioning but bodily reactions.
-
Then, these arose from those pressures indicated in the reflex action in the central nervous system, or the brain center reflexes themselves.
-
Then those applications that upset the hypogastric and pneumogastric nerve forces caused (and cause) the reflex from the assimilating center TO the central nervous system.
-
Thus the sources of complications that have existed.
-
That there has been, and is, a continuation of the body-forces to react at all under these distresses indicates the power of spiritual and mental influences; that, if properly directed upon the body-forces, mental and physical, may bring recuperation to the body.
-
The gland forces of the body have been abused, in that some have been so overstimulated as to work hardships upon the activity between the hypogastric and pneumogastric centers.
-
Thus the severe headaches, at times the inability to take foods at all, the oppressions that have come to the body at times which have brought about the periods of melancholia, the periods of resentment builded towards individuals, those as builded towards self of self-destruction, of that tendency towards destruction of any influence that would hinder in the reactions of the body-forces themselves.
-
Though there have been periods when it has been necessary for a sedative reaction in the body, the saving grace has been that such influences have been kept to a hypnotic rather than a narcotic - in the material or physical sense.
-
There are periods when there is irregularity to the blood circulation, or the heart beat itself. Yet the stability in the ENTITY force itself, as indicated in the seven centers of propagation, is well established. And thus a heart, lung, liver and kidney circulation has been maintained. It is still indicated, of course, that there are still frustrations through the liver and the cardiac portion of the stomach itself, from the hypogastric and pneumogastric plexus, in the upper and lower portion of the digestive system as related to assimilation.
-
Here, then, we find the disturbances:
-
Pressures in the cerebrospinal areas that reflect to the ganglia along the centers in the cerebrospinal system. While there has not been the response to some applications that have been more in the nature of purely mechanical adjustments without consideration of the interchanging activity of body, mind and spiritual influences in the body.
-
KNOW - KNOW - there CAN be NO healing save from the awakening of the divine within self. This is not only true for this body but for every individual entity. It is a fact that these influences or centers may be aroused by varied means, through which body, mind and soul function in the physical being. Thus the needs of these considerations for this body, particularly, in making administrations for beneficial results for this body:
-
It may be aided; it may be helped. It will require patience, persistence, prayer, meditation; not only by the body itself but by those who may apply the spiritual, the mental control of physical activities for the body to bring this full awareness within this particular body; for the creative influences, for the desire to fill its place, its opportunity in the material life.
-
Then, in making administrations:
-
It will require that there be, first, the agreeable, and pleasant surroundings; not only of the external nature but the mental and spiritual associations. And there should be such companionship with the body at all times. Not as to become obnoxious in movements, in desires, in hopes, in aspirations, but working together! not only with one another but with the spiritual and mental forces that come from an activity in doing, in being a helpful influence to those that are met as associates and in activities with the body; whether in picking up sticks or in building activities with others, in mind, in character, in association, in reading, in writing, in active forces of EVERY physical and mental nature.
-
As to the environs, - it should be close to water, - that in keeping with conditions in the body. As these are low, then it should not be where it is too cold, nor where it is too warm, but so that sand, sea, air AND the activities may have their influence in the mental environs of the body.
-
There should be the daily applications of a massage with Peanut Oil (in the beginning), that aids in supplying nutriment to the skin, to the activity of centers, ganglia, muscles, nerves and tissues; lovingly, carefully administered. This oil does not become rancid on body; it does supply nutriment, elasticity and activity to the cerebrospinal system.
-
Follow the Peanut Oil massage with an alcohol rub, - not with denatured nor rub alcohol, but a very mild solution of GRAIN alcohol, - as to give strength and vitality to the tendons and muscles, to give stimulating activity to the lymph and emunctory circulation of the abdomen AND of the organs of same.
-
In the food values, - here, too, consideration must be given.
-
Vary the diet.
-
Whole milk, raw, is good. Preferably, if possible, take most of this with the heat still in same, - not cold, not old, - the fresher the milk the better. Thus it must be from the tested cows, not the common or untested herd or individual cow.
-
Occasionally, if possible, goat’s milk would be well, too. This may gradually even replace cow’s milk, as other foods that are assimilated may be given the body.
-
Begin with beef juice, - this does not mean soup nor anything like it! But it should be made daily. Take not more than half a teaspoonful at the time, but take it as medicine every four hours - though it might not be necessary to take it through the night, but every four hours during the day. Gradually increase the quantity, but never more than a teaspoonful at the time, see? And take at least ten minutes to sip the teaspoonful or the half teaspoonful! This may be taken with whole wheat toast, if palatable to the body. This will assimilate, this will give strength, this will aid in adding vital energies for the body; as also will air, sea, water, AND the mental and physical companionship bring recuperation, WITH the daily massage.
-
Do not hurry through the massage. Take time to give same, and let it be done with the spirit of truth, of hope, of purpose, of the suggestive influence as will aid in establishing the coordinations needed for the rebuilding, the replenishing for this body of those conditions.
-
These do, and then in sixty to ninety days we would give further instructions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Who would you recommend as the proper individual to be with him and to give these treatments? (A) The one who gives the massage should not be the same one that is with the body continuously as companion, as aide. But we would recommend such an one as Townsend to give the massage. We would recommend such an area as the west coast of Florida. There should NOT be other than the companionship AND the activity for the body.
Clearwater. Mrs. Townsend.
- (Q) Would you suggest one as a companion for the body? (A) This had best be chosen by the body or those responsible for same. It must be one believing and ministering in the spiritual, creative influences of the spirit of truth.
Do this. Remember, - the spiritual, the mental, the attitudes of the associate and companion will mean much; as also will the character of the individual daily administering of the massages.
Corrections or adjustments are not to be made, but there IS to be kept the ability of absorption. Through massages, and a good conversation during same.
- We are through for the present.

R1. 2/7/42 Thomas Sugrue’s letter: “Mr. [2642] escaped from his new companion at Tampa and came back looking for Mr. Allen [GD’s note: Mr. Malcolm Allen [?]] who had left for Norfolk. He went to a rest home in Dunedin, left his bags there, returned to Clearwater and entered a rest home here. Then he disappeared. He was finally corralled and is at the Clearwater home.”

FOUNDATION INN STOCKBRIDGE MASSACHUSETTS
My dear Mr. Cayce:
I have been wanting to write to you for quite some time. You will probably remember that I was in Virginia Beach to see you on December 30th, I believe.
I tried to get started on the program you recommended in the reading you made for me but I just didn’t seem to be able to work things out at that time.
I was in a very nervous and excited and worried condition due to the fact that my sister had gotten me to go up to Virginia Beach with the understanding that you had a hospital there, and that she broke up my Florida home by taking my Mother to New York City while I was in Virginia Beach to see you. Then I went on to New York to see my Mother and sister and there was quite some inharmony and misunderstanding which further increased my nervousness. Soon after I returned to Florida, to Clearwater, as you had advised, but due to the fact that my sister and I had spent so much money on railroad fares, there was not much money available for me to carry out the program, you had recommended.
Mr. Allen and I arrived in Clearwater at the height of the tourist season when rents were very high and about all that were available to our limited finances were apartments or rooms heated with gas or oil heat and I didn’t feel I should take such a place because of my needing good air to breathe well.
I was in such a nervous state, and after I had a massage from Mrs. Townsend I felt that it would be better for me not to have the massages every day, but to have a few days intervene at first as it seemed to make me so tired and restless. Mrs. Townsend wasn’t willing to do it that way and I talked with you and your son said he would talk with Mrs. Townsend about it but nothing ever came of it.
I got very nervous and restless after Mr. Allen went back to Virginia and came back north.
I am now at a sort of a sanitarium where they try to get people well by talking psychology to them. The doctor here realizes my physical condition should have attention but they are not equipped to give the massages etc. you recommended.
I am very weak, my back and legs especially, and get very little good out of my food, and I seem to miss the sea air as my throat is very sensitive.
I am very sorry I didn’t manage to work out your program better. The massage Mrs. Townsend gave me with the peanut oil did seem to help my appetite but it seemed to increase my restlessness temporarily, and I was afraid to have one every day, especially as I had not been able to get started on the beef juice, because we didn’t have an apartment. I had a massage with the peanut oil when I was in New York City and that seemed to help me some too.
I feel bitterly disappointed that I didn’t seem to be able to work out your program at that time because of lack of money etc.
I HOPE YOU WILL FORGIVE ME AS I AM EXCEEDINGLY WORRIED ABOUT MY CONDITION. I WANT TO ASK YOU IF YOU WILL PLEASE HAVE MERCY ON ME AND MAKE ME ANOTHER READING, a check reading or whatever you call it and see what you could tell me now? I believe Mr. Allen told me that you charge $10 for a check reading or a subsequent reading. I AM VERY WEAK AND TERRIBLY WORRIED FOR FEAR I MAY NEVER GET WELL, AND MY FOLKS ARE VERY SHORT OF MONEY NOW. Would you consider making me a reading and letting me pay you sometime later? I am in a pitiful condition. I swear I’ll make everything right with you as soon as I can.
At any rate, will you please drop me a few lines and let me know what you can do for me? I went through a lot of excitement after I saw you and it upset me so that I was not in condition to work out your program. Will you please have mercy on me and see what can be done to help me?
I’ll be looking forward to hearing from you as I am terribly worried, I have a medical friend who feels she can help me medically but I have very little confidence in that.
If you make another reading for me PERHAPS SOMETHING MIGHT BE RECOMMENDED WHICH COULD BE DONE FOR ME WITHOUT MY GOING SOUTH. Your folks might question you about this while unconscious.
WILL YOU PLEASE HAVE MERCY ON ME AND SEE WHAT CAN BE DONE? I have always been ambitious and anxious to serve humanity, and I am greatly in need of help.
Will you please let me hear from you and see what can be done to save me?
God bless you! - and I’ll hope to hear from you soon,
Very gratefully yours, [2642]
P.S. My back and legs are so weak I can hardly walk around, and I get very little good out of my food.
Please don’t hold anything against me, - things just didn’t seem to work out at that time. I am very anxious to get well, and I hope you’ll have mercy on me.
Gratefully, [2642]
P.S.S. Time is precious, but I believe you can still help me. Please, please, for Heaven’s sake, help me to get well and live a useful life. I have had misfortunes all my life. PLEASE HELP ME TO HAVE A CHANCE AT NORMAL LIFE DEDICATED TO HUMANITY.
Gratefully, [2642]
I am very restless and worried. Please have mercy on me. I feel that my condition is just about desperate. I am almost frantic from lack of nourishment. Will you please answer by air mail?
R3. 3/9/42 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [2642]:
Dear Mr. [2642]
Have yours of the 5th and assure you would be glad to try and be of help were it possible. However, do not wish to even attempt to give any thing as might interfere with what may be or is being done for you there. Would it not be better to have your Sister write me what may be done with what might be suggested for you at this time. Then, there would possibly be an opportunity for the information to be of help. Am sorry that circumstances seemed to be against you at the time the first information was undertaken. Please know it is not a matter of fee or anything of the kind. Would gladly try if, IF, the information could be used - I think Mrs. Townsend only wished to do as was suggested in the information. There is no use having information unless it is to be followed. The information of its self can not help any thing - it is the doing as suggested of that given that has or can ever help.
Would be glad to help if can - but there is no use trying unless what is suggested can be adhered to. Can that be done???
Let me hear from your Sister or from some one in authority there. Do hope you will soon be better, for am sure you have a work to do once you set your mind as to do it and to get yourself physically fit for that job.
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce

My dear Mr. Cayce:-
How kind of you to write me as well as Mr. [2642]. I feel him to be considerably better than he was a month ago. He spent one week at Neurological Institute, New York where they diagnosed him as hypochrondriasis and anxiety neurosis and said he had no organic physical trouble which they could find. Following that he had two weeks at Riggs Sanitarium in Stockbridge where they found him extremely obstinate about accepting the fact that his trouble is mainly psychological, but he returned from there definitely better and somewhat more cheerful. For a week I have had him boarding with kind friends and have seen him daily. He has times of the old whining restlessness & periods of depression. When something exciting and novel is going on, and occasionally, recently, at other times, he snaps out of his worries and becomes quite jovial and almost normal. He keeps complaining that he cannot eat, but for instance at lunch yesterday, he ate three lamb chops, a large portion of spinach and carrots and a big piece of apple pie. He gained 8 pounds at Riggs in the fortnight.
He himself suggested that he felt a sanitarium would be more helpful than trying to board and the family and I heartily concurred and after some looking around we have located one, Dr. Wadsworth’s Sanitarium, South Norwalk, Conn. whose reputation I have known for years. The three head men seem to me admirable and delightful human beings and this afternoon Mr. [2642] has gone up there by himself on the train. They made us a very reasonable rate which the family can afford. I hope that he may be able to stay there for sometime showing steady progress as this continual changing is very upsetting to the family as well as to Mr. [2642]
himself, as well as being very expensive. I spoke to the doctor in charge of your work and Mr. [2642]‘s faith in you and he is willing to cooperate in the continuation of the peanut oil massage, the beef juice or any other sensible suggestion that may come through to you.
Is it feasible for you to send me a carbon of the reading that you send Mr. [2642] so that I may know how to cooperate also? Mr. [2642] will be quietly resting on Friday between 3:30 and 4:30 at the Sanitarium in Norwalk.
Sincerely yours, [signed] E. W. Hubbard, M.D. [EWH/R]
- Can the proper treatment be secured at Woodscourt, (Dr. Wadsworth’s Sanitarium), in South Norwalk, Conn.?
- How can he get rid of the dullness in his head and the general listlessness and lassitude?
- How can he get over his worry, apprehensiveness and unhappiness and have more understanding and congeniality with his family?
- Could he get into some constructive work soon?
- Should the Peanut Oil rubs be continued? also the same diet?
- Could you suggest a masseuse that could give the massages correctly?
- Would it help him to take some gland medicine of any kind?

B1. 12/25/41 “I realize that I am far too weak to undertake a trip to Va. Beach at present. I am very much undernourished, my metabolism very poor, very restless and nervous. I have a great deal of intense headache, and feel very much fatigued much of the time, and am considerably under normal weight. There are very few things I can eat, and I have a very annoying pain in my right side much of the time which I understand is caused by a gas pocket in the intestines. I am profoundly worried about my condition and very anxious to have you give me a reading while I am here, and send me instructions as to what remedial measures to take. Then, after I improve somewhat I should like to go up to Va. Beach to be near you for a time. I am very eager to recover my health, as, for many years I have been working out plans for fostering economic cooperation among progressive people with a religious purpose, for I feel sure that poverty and want can be entirely eliminated among God-fearing people. I hope you can give me a Rdg. soon, as I fear I may be losing ground. Will you please wire me collect how soon you can arrange to give me a rdg., as I am in great discomfort. My mother wrote this for me at my dictation, as my eyes are not very strong.”
B2. 12/26/41 Phone request: “Been ailing for some years, Mr. Cayce. Doctors have complicated my condition by giving me lots of gland medicine which I shouldn’t have had. I’m terribly weak and seem unable to eat anything to gain strength. Do you think there is any hope for me?”
