This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Va. Beach, Va., this 9th day of May, 1934, in accordance with request made by self - Mrs. [272], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis.]
Time of Reading 4:10 to 4:50 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Alabama. (Body and enquiring mind, in regard to her physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Questions.)
-
EC: Yes. The body and mind is at rest, and prayer, and is passing into the inter-between land.
-
In thine seeking, my child, know that He is nigh unto thee. Not that there is the necessity that a vision or apparition be thine. But these experiences in their own good time will be thine. For He is near at hand. He will guide thee. He will awaken within thine inner self, if thou wilt but open the door to Him. Let thy prayer ever be: HAVE THINE OWN WAY, LORD. I GIVE PRAISE AND GLORY TO THEE FOR THAT THOU HAST DONE IN MY BODY, MY MIND. MY SOUL IS IN THY KEEPING. GUIDE THOU ME IN EVERY WAY THAT I SHOULD GO. AND LET ME EVER BE, FATHER, JOYOUS AND GLAD IN THE SERVICE THAT I MAY RENDER TO MY FELLOW MAN.

Ready for questions.

(Q) Regarding my health: How may my female organs be cleansed of the discharge? (A) There have been the tendencies for the superficial amount of secretions, by the activities that have been necessary to be kept in the system for the destroying of those influences that bring about the distresses. And this has been of the nature that has tended to make the system to throw out the lymph circulation, thus producing - with the activity of the uterus - the discharge.
Then, about once each week - Wednesdays - use the douche with the Atomidine, one part Atomidine to ten parts water.
On Mondays and Saturdays use a douche of Glyco-Thymoline; one part Glyco-Thymoline to four parts water. This being of the varied nature to the Atomidine will make for a clearing of these tendencies for the discharge.
Also occasionally we would take the Atomidine internally, that there may be the continued tendency for the system to adjust itself for keeping a balance in the activity of the glands as related to both the assimilating and eliminating system.
Do not allow the alimentary canal to become clogged or choked, nor the tendencies for inactivity of the liver and hepatic circulation to cause disturbances. At such periods use the properties known as AL-CAROID, and the CAROID Bile Salts tablets with same. The AL-CAROID would be taken once or twice a week, dependent upon the manner in which the digestion is active; and the CAROID Bile Salts tablets would be taken not more than once a week, and two tablets at a time. We would be mindful that the diet does not tend too much toward those things that make for the activities of secretions with relation to the genitive organs; that is, no shell fish nor sea foods other than broiled fish - which may be taken at any time desired, but no shell fish. Be mindful that there is not too great a quantity of those things taken that produce alcohol in the system; that is, starches and sweets at the same meal.
Being mindful in these directions, as we find, will make for a clarification of the system that will be most beneficial.
There has been the tendency for the activities of those properties in the system to affect the gland secretion of the thyroids, in such a nature as to affect the growth of nails, hair, and the cuticle of the body. We will find it most helpful to use at times the White Vaseline on the scalp and on portions of the body; and at other periods crude petroleum will be most helpful to the body. Taking a small amount of the petroleum jelly or White Vaseline, massage same into the scalp and allow to remain in scalp and hair overnight - about once a month. And once a week at other times when this is rubbed in, cleanse with one part alcohol to twenty parts water; or a teaspoonful to a gallon of tepid water. Do not use the denatured alcohol but rather the pure grain. When the crude petroleum is used, this should also be cleansed almost immediately, that there may not be the burning of the portions of the hair that have already grown to parts on the scalp or body, see?
These, as we find, will be the healthful conditions for the physical body.
- (Q) What could I do for the irritation which seems to be in my right lung? (A) This is rather the disturbed circulation, and the use of the Atomidine is most helpful in such conditions - if there are the proper food values taken that make for body-building. Or at times take the thyroid extract, see? This will aid in supplying the proper nutriment for the activities of these glands, in the coordination of same with the respiratory system and the rest of the body.
Be mindful that the body does not take cold nor sit in drafts. But long walks morning and evening are well, as to the exercise; and when doing same breathe DEEP into the lungs.
-
(Q) Should I take the vaccine given by some local doctors? [I took this vaccine once.] (A) As we find, not so well under the existent conditions.
-
(Q) Is there any other suggestion for my better health? (A) This as we have given for the better condition of the health.
Should there continue to be the conditions in the Vagina and organs of gestation, after the use of these properties suggested, we would then use the Elliot method in CLEANSING the body; but use the properties we have outlined first.
-
(Q) Regarding mental and spiritual: What may be done to assist in the coming of the Awakening to me? (A) As indicated, do not be overanxious; yet be consistent and persistent in thy studies and in the application of self in the light of that which has been given thee. If thou wilt do the acts that will bring into thine experience day by day the fruits of the spirit to, for and with thy fellow man, then the same will be magnified and glorified in thee; and thou wilt find that more and more He will walk and talk with thee in thy meditations and thy prayers. For, He is willing, yet He WAITS thy bidding and thy activity. Be not overcome with remorse nor anxiety, nor be overzealous; but be ye joyous in the praise of thy Father through His Son, the Christ.
-
(Q) How may my mind and body be cleansed for meditation? (A) No better way than that we have given. Cleanse first thy body, in making preparation for each day’s meditation, in the way or manner that seemeth well unto thee. Then open thine self that the glory of the Father through the promises in the Christ may be magnified in thine inner self. Study well those promises that are thine in the 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th chapters of John in the King James Version, and know that these refer to thee. In each line, in each verse, see self receiving those promises, those blessings that He has promised. For, as He gave, He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet receives a prophet’s reward. Let not thine heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
-
(Q) How may I assist in helping the doors of light to be opened to me? (A) Do not try to assist self, but rather smile upon those that are downhearted and sad; lift the load from those that find theirs too heavy to bear, in gentleness, in kindness, in long-suffering, in patience, in mercy, in brotherly love. And as ye show forth these to thy fellow man, the ways and the gates of glory open before thee. Who hath called on the Lord; they that are weighted with the cares of the earth, those whose souls seek the solace of His blessings and the glory of His message and promises to men? They that are in such an attitude find the gates, the doors, ajar.
-
(Q) May I know divine love? (A) As ye see it expressed in the lives about thee, ye may know it and HAVE it as thine own. As ye show forth the attributes of the Father, in manifesting love and mercy and grace and patience and long-suffering, so do ye see the beauties of divine love. So do ye see it expressed in the lives of thy fellow man. So do ye find these conditions in thy experience. If ye would have friends, be FRIENDLY to those about thee! If ye would know the Father, then manifest Him in thy walks and thy talks with thy fellow man. If ye would have divine love, show love and mercy and patience to thy fellow man in every walk of life.
For, Life itself in all its forms is the manifestation of that the Father would shed upon the sons and daughters of men that glory in Him. Be happy and glad. Smile though the heavens fall. And though thy best friend deceive thee, and though thine own loved ones forsake thee; when they forsake thee thy Father, thy God, will take thee up.
- (Q) My Life Reading spoke of “latent abilities and forces.” How may these be aroused? (A) By application of the little things in thy daily walks of life; showing gentleness to each one ye meet; making self FOOLISH (as it were) for Christ’s sake. Then ye become wise in His name. Making thine self in the manner of being persecuted; yea, so was He persecuted, that there might be known in self and in those that would seek Him the love that passeth understanding! As ye manifest all these various activities.
As seen from the information, these refer to the material applications in the way of teaching in a direct way and manner those things that pertain to the relationships of individuals with their fellow man, according to MAN principles. And the self may so present these, so make these of such a measure as to show that these must arise from the spiritual inception in the mind and heart; else they become rote and stumblingblocks in the experience of others.
Carry on, then, in that manner that ye may yet complete the passing of the Bar - or the studies in the law. Also well that ye make thine application for the coming year in the district Schools, for such will only give in the mental self that SURENESS of the mental being well-grounded - or the material things to fall back upon.
Rest during the coming seasons, but FIND thyself in thy relationship to thy Maker. If the promptings of the heart and the inner self bespeak that thou art ready and willing to be used by Him wheresoever He calls, then when the call comes answer: HERE AM I, LORD, USE ME WHERE THOU SEEST I MAY SERVE THY WILL AND THY PURPOSES THE BETTER.
-
(Q) Please tell me what to study. (A) Any of those things that pertain to the relationships of man to man, and of man to God. These in the verses and chapters given. Then the more secular things that befit thee for any of the activities that may present themselves to thee from time to time.
-
(Q) Should I continue my present routine of studies, or add anything to them? (A) For the present, only those that we have indicated or outlined.
-
(Q) Please tell me the best way to continue my law. (A) Follow in those things necessary for preparing self for passing the examination. Thou hast seen where tbe disturbing factors arose. Apply self in that direction.
-
(Q) Where should I study law, and with whom? (A) As indicated, until the summer season - or for the next three to four weeks, with those with whom the body has the best association and connection for the activity that gives IN the very action that necessary instruction in the things needed.
-
(Q) When should I stand the Bar examination again? (A) When thou art ready, or when those associates declare to thee thou art complete.
-
(Q) What should I do this summer? (A) As indicated, rest a portion of the time; then study.
-
(Q) Where should I go and what should I do next year? (A) This is too far in advance. Make the preparations, and as the conditions come about there may be the ways opened for the activities in the varied directions.
-
(Q) Any other advice or counsel at this time? (A) Keep thine self in that way which will make for an ever readiness to say, HERE AM I, LORD, USE ME; THINE HANDMAID IS READY TO BE USED IN THE MANNER, THE WAY THOU SEEST BEST FOR ME AND FOR THOSE THINGS THAT I MAY DO AND PRESENT AND REPRESENT IN THY KINGDOM.

Dear Mr. Cayce:
Many, many thanks to you, and to the others, for the wonderful Reading which you gave me. My heart is filled with gratitude and praise to Him for this message and the wonderful promises it contains. May I be a channel of blessings to those I contact. May my heart be so full that it will overflow to others.
As to passing in the inter-between land in meditation, it seems to me, if I understand correctly, that this is not to be desired so much. I have thought, for some time that this was happening. I have been so anxious and eager to seek my God through the Christ within me. I believe I should be more passive and desirous, yet not anxious; but quietly waiting upon the Lord. Have I expressed my idea correctly? Is this more in keeping with the whole object of meditation instead of projecting one’s self in the inter-between land? I want my meditation to be most spiritual, yet I desire it to be practical.
I am very happy for those wonderful promises. I do want Him to guide me. I must open the door. I try to do this. In my desire and wish I fling the door of my heart open wide. This, I suppose, is what I have been trying to do in my meditation. My prayer is to have the fruits of the spirit so in my own life and heart that I may help EVERY one I contact each day. Make me a blessing to others - every one - by a smile or some act of kindness, I pray. I am so happy and thankful for the prayer that was given.
I shall try most faithfully to follow the Health directions. I believe I am getting better already. My hair has stopped falling out so badly and it has begun to grow back. I have been unable to obtain the Crude Petroleum and the Druggist tells me that Uncle Sam won’t allow them to sell pure grain alcohol. Do you know whether I could get these two articles in Norfolk? I would be glad to order them.
I am happy that I was told to read John 14, 15, 16, and 17 chapters. I have been feasting on the 14th chapter of John and felt its power for some time and it makes me happy and full of praise to Him to know and receive this special instruction.
The promise as to Divine Love makes me so thankful.
It seems that the passing or the preparation for the passing of the Bar is the next thing I must concentrate on. It is hard for me, in a practical way to apply the law. My experience has been with children and I know little about the practical business side of life especially concerning law. I’m going to study my very best and pray that I may learn and retain in a practical way that I study. I pray that He may guide me in a very close and definite way just here, for I feel the need so badly. I think probably that it would be better to go to Mamma’s for a week or more of rest about June the first and then come back to Birmingham and study with the group of young men and women who are studying for this examination. Is this what you gather from those answers concerning law? I am trusting Him to guide me in this matter.
I am so thankful for the answer to the last question. I am trying and will continue to try my very best to do just that. My desire, so much, is that I may do God’s will. My answer will be just that! I thank God for putting such a desire in my heart and for all the things in my body and life that have brought me closer to Him through Christ, my master.
Mr. Cayce, I thank you so much for your wonderful help. Words can’t express how much your wonderful help has meant to me. You and your group of consecrated helpers are the most wonderful thing in the world to me.
R2. 5/16/34 EC’s letter:
My dear Mrs. [272]:
Yours of the 13th came, enclosing your contribution, also the Group’s, for which please accept our sincerest thanks.
I appreciate very much your writing me as to just how you feel about your reading. I’m glad indeed that the information means so much to you. I think you have the right idea exactly about the meditation and allowing yourself to go out to the inter-between land. If such experiences become a portion of the whole self, well and good; but as we have so often been told, there are times when we should “Stand still and see the glory of the Lord.” It is indeed true that we sometimes try so hard that we become rather a stumblingblock to our own selves. We interpose ourselves. Let me use a little illustration:
You remember very well the story of Elijah being so anxious and zealous as to what he was able to do at the time there was a test between he and the sons of Belial, when the fire came down on the altar and consumed the sacrifice to Jehovah. But when he destroyed the priests of Belial and Jezebel spoke, Elijah got so scared that he ran away and cried unto the Lord, “I alone of all people am left to serve thee; everyone has turned against us.” He saw the mighty tumult in nature, the fire, the storm, the lightning, the earth quaking and all the mighty forces in nature. He was fed by the ravens; the Lord told him to stand still, be quiet and listen at the still small voice from within. It is the promise to every individual, that we may be directed within ourselves. For, as Moses said, it isn’t as to who shall ascend into heaven or who will go over the sea, but lo, we will find Him within our own selves. And, as the Master said, “The kingdom is within.” So, as we apply the little kindnesses, the smile here and a kind word there, we will be awakened oft to that peace which comes from within. I remember quite well an experience of Mr. D. L. Moody’s [See yr. 1896, pp. 70-75 THERE IS A RIVER, as told by EC to Thomas Sugrue in 1941-2] which he told me, when I asked him if God had ever spoken to Him. He said he was really having his first successful meeting as an evangelist in Cleveland, Ohio. As he prayed earnestly one night, he had a vision and was told to close his meeting at once and go to London, England. He did that very thing, to the surprise of everyone and all his associates. In England, knowing no one, he wondered just what it was all about. Then one day, walking through one of the more unpretentious portions of the city, he heard a child’s voice singing. He looked up and saw a little box of flowers on a ledge, the only ones anywhere in the quarter. He went to the steps and something impelled him to go up and there he found a poor little lame girl that had been trying to tend these little flowers. When she saw him she exclaimed, “Oh, Mr. Moody, I have been praying that you would come to London! God needs you so badly here!” The success of his meeting there is possibly still felt in London. To him this was a speaking voice within, presented in vision first, and then the answer in the little lame girl in London. We have no idea whom He will use, or by what means we will be spoken to. We here have had a beautiful illustration to us this morning: Recently we have had requests from very prominent and - worldly considered - very philanthropic individuals in the large centers; namely, Detroit and New York. And some very marvellous results have been reported. Yet when our immediate needs had to be supplied for our carrying on here, the funds came from a lonely poor worker on the Alabama River. What a lesson we have almost every day! And yet I know we do very little with all the glorious things that are shown and told us. We feel very unworthy at times. But you do not know how much good it does us for one like yourself to tell us that the information you received is helpful to you day by day.

Mr. Edgar Cayce; Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
I appreciated, so much, your very encouraging letter. May I say that I am seeking the best that I know, and I pray that the obstacles be removed. The reading of May the 9th was wonderful. I do not want to be a stumbling block to my own development, thus I try to hold the correct mental attitude and I hope to be able to show forth the fruits of the spirit more and more in my daily life. It seems that one can be so near and yet so far. I just keep knowing that Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. I am trying in my meditations not to use so much effort, but in a way to stand still and “see the glory of the Lord.” I do want to be more persistent and consistent in my seeking the Christ within. Christ is the great Physician and I would like to be able to exercise enough faith and knowledge in Him and in his promises to be able to effect a cleansing of my body without the use of a machine or any other methods than the directions in the last reading. Do I make myself clear along these lines? The machine, I am sure is wonderful, and I think it is a marvelous blessing to be able to help those who are sick in this matter. Then there is again the words of the Master when he said: “Thy faith hath made thee whole.”
I am sending fifty ($.50) cents in stamps for which please send Lesson VI. One copy is for Mrs. Moody Wray and the other is for Miss Lottie Dew.
They like the Bulletins very much and I wonder if you would send a copy for each.
I am still trusting that I may be permitted to attend the Congress.
I might say that Miss [275] is to receive a seal for me, and of course, I am eager to see it. I think that she has a very wonderful talent.
I like the affirmation for the last half of the month of May. It seems to just fit me, or to fit an inner longing of my soul. “May there be created that within me which will make me aware of the Christ life in my experience.”
I don’t mean for my letters to be or sound selfish in that they seem to be so much about myself. Your work and all the information which your association is trying to convey to the minds of people is very interesting and close to my heart, and I wish that I might help in the carrying forward of some of the great messages that you are receiving.
Sincerely, [272]

R7. 9/22/34 Miss [275]‘s letter to EC: “I have just finished and sent off Mrs. [272]‘s seal. It was a beautiful one, with a large cross in the center, a kneeling man and woman on each side and 4 doves carrying branches in their beaks, and a pyramid on the bottom - a 12 pointed star on the cross - the star and cross radiating. The interpretation given indicates that she has the understanding of the true Christianity in her soul, and should let the doves of Love and Life alight now on her, and spread the real truths that He gave to the men and women who are seeking. Perhaps you will have the opportunity of seeing it some day, as the meaning is quite long and the seal full of small details.”
R8. 10/6/34 She wrote:
If you don’t mind I would like to talk about the last reading you gave me (May 9, 1934). The development I desire is shown forth in that Reading very satisfactorily to me. I don’t believe much better questions and answers could be made. That is how much I think of it! As to the physical - It said that it was necessary to keep in the system those activities. May I think, and I do think that these will pass away when they have served their purpose and are no longer necessary. I’m still following the treatment and like it very much. As to the spiritual - it is very definite. I desire that I may show forth the fruits of the spirit to those I meet. I don’t want to be a passive lifeless being; but a definite, active personality through which the Master may find a means of showing His love to another. The thought came to me that I need the lesson on Patience which we are studying.
I wrote Mildred about my seal, but I want to tell you about it also. I had just received it when I wrote to Mildred. I am delighted with it. I think it wonderful and beautiful too. I look forward to the time when I may know [275] personally for she is a wonderful little woman I am sure. Such a wonderful ability she has!
In the center of the circle is a large purple cross outlined in gold. In the center of the cross is a six-sided gold star over a white six-sided star with gold radiations leading out from it. The radiations form a cross by being just in the place which seems most systematic. At the foot of the cross is a golden pyramid which represents my Egyptian life. The cross merges into the pyramid. The cross represents the Christ and the star in the center of the cross represents God. On either side of the cross is a man and a woman kneeling, the woman being on the right side and the man on the left as one faces the cross. The human figures are dressed in blue with outlines of gold in their costume.
I believe that these figures represent the fact that I have been both a man and a woman in my incarnations. Near the top of the cross are two white doves carrying palm leaves and then just above the heads of the human figures are doves with the palm branches. In the interpretation there were four quotations from John (John 11:25, John 13:34, I John 4:7, I John 4:16). May I quote the last part of the interpretation? “Each dove carrying its message to you. The man represents the eagerness, the thirst for the living water, and whole hearted full desire for the bread of life, with the dove of peace to the soul, urging him on, knowing that through the fulfillment of the seeking, the branch of peace will be completely rooted in his soul. The woman has the natural peace down deep in her soul, but is still seeking and desiring to have her soul filled with the Truth of Life and Love which is falling down upon her from the doves above. The dove of purity is helping her along, and so the steps toward living the life is aided onward. The pyramid represents the Egyptian life, where the One God brought her the real beginning of the understanding of Oneness that she has brought through. The glory of God in the pyramid, being merged into the Christ Consciousness. She has the understanding of the True Christianity in her soul; - and should let the doves of Life and Love alight on her, and then send the message of understanding, and Christ Truths and Teachings, to the men and women who are seeking for peace and understanding of Life and Love.”
This means so much to me. I desire that the doves of Life and Love alight on me that I may be the means to send or tell the Christ message to others!
I don’t mean for this letter to be selfish in that I have written all about myself, for I wish to tell you a little of my appreciation I owe to you for your wonderful help, sympathy, and inspiration. I could not begin to tell you how much I appreciate you. You are wonderful!
R9. 11/5/34 She wrote: “Under present conditions I feel that it would probably be better for all of us to disband our Group #4 and try it again. It seems that Mr. [370] and Mrs. [593] have such an antagonistic reaction toward each other… For Mr. [370] and myself to continue alone would have the appearance of only a personal thing. I have had to resist such for so long. Sometime ago, one Sun. afternoon, Mr. [370] made a personal advancement toward me on the physical side of life. Such a poor way for me to express it! I hesitate to mention such, but it took me by such complete surprise…Of course I could not stand for such… I am interested in soul development on the highest plane possible. I desire to help another, but I do not believe the development can be made on purely social relationships. The physical is the lowest plane. Surely another would not use the truths your lessons teach and approach one on the physical plane. It’s just so distasteful to me…
