This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 29th day of October, 1930, in accordance with request made by self - Mrs. [272].

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, Mrs. [272]. Now, we find there are disorders and disturbances in the physical functioning of the body. The conditions, as we find, have to do with the FUNCTIONING of organs, and that the causes are both physical and psychopathical. In the effects as are produced in the disturbance, these have to do with the sensory system and the organs of same, the organs of reproduction, and these effects are from mental attitudes as have had much to do with the disturbances as are exhibited in the present time.

2. In the conditions existent, then, these are as we find them:

3. IN THE BLOOD SUPPLY, this shows a near normalcy in its reaction, though low in the red blood count. As much is due to the general nervous system in this direction as from pathological conditions in organs themselves.

IN THE NERVOUS SYSTEM, OR SYSTEMS, here we find, from the PHYSICAL sense, the GREATER amount of distress - for, from there being stored in the mental forces of the body those of aggression, discontent, the holding of the disorders against individuals, has produced much as has been stored as of detrimental influences; for ANGER in the system destroys that characterization of a perfect, or even a well BALANCED ASSIMILATION, which makes for physical impoverishments, and with the constant brooding brings depressions that affect especially the sensory system; eyes, ears, nose, throat.

5. In the character of the elements produced IN the plasm, these become - from such depressions - of an over ACID nature in the body, and throughout the system these work for the improper functioning of organs as are of the sympathetic SYSTEM’S nature.

6. In the PELVIC organs, these are manifested much in the SAME manner - yet there are PHYSICAL conditions existent there that make for an accentuation of the disorder. This is especially seen in the plexus of the 4th lumbar, that causes an overactivity to the system as relating to the character of the effluvia thrown off in the functioning of the organs of pelvis, producing then a high state of irritation - which makes for pains through the region of the tubes as feed into the organs themselves in elimination, making for a suppression in the menses and at others an excess of same.

7. IN THE FUNCTIONING OF THE ORGANS, GENERALLY, OF THE BODY:

8. In the brain forces the body is very good.

9. In the organs of the sensory system, these we find - especially in the ear, or in the inner ear - from the amount of the over secretion as comes through those [areas] of the Eustachian tube - are over irritated. This is more from a GENERAL condition through nerve taxes [taxis?] than from ORGANIC disorder. The same is experienced in the soft tissue of the nose, antrum. These all show the irritations as exist there, aided by this repression in system from mental forces, as well as from the physical effect as is produced in the organs so disturbed. Throat shows an irritation only at times, but a tendency to clear the throat, or to get up phlegm - which RARELY is able to be raised from the throat proper, yet the irritation in the UPPER portion of throat at times becomes rather severe. Easily does the body take cold, from this over amount of secretion thrown off in the manner attempting to adjust itself from the irritation. Naturally, this has produced - in the upper DORSAL, especially in the 3rd and 4th plexus center, as well as in the 3rd and 4th CERVICAL center, through which the nerves supply TO the portions of system affected receive the greater impulse. Soreness or irritation exists, then, there.

10. Lungs are very good in their reaction, but with the lowness of the red blood supply makes for the tendency to get short breath, and to find that at times there is a feeling of hot and cold flushes from the activity in the organ itself.

11. Heart’s action not NORMAL, but not an abnormal from a FUNCTIONAL nature; rather from the high nervous state of the body from irritation. Only, then, a quickened pulse.

12. The digestive system, especially in the stomach proper, shows the state of an overacid condition existent. Naturally, with the result of a disorderly liver, from this high amount of acid in system, as WELL as a tendency in the colon and jejunum of formation of gases, which produce rumbling and a pressure at times.

13. In the kidneys and the organs of pelvis:

14. Kidneys, from the acidity, show the effect of same in their functioning, though not ORGANICALLY disordered. They may BECOME so, from the amount of the INFLAMMATION produced, as well as the necessity of an overactivity of same in the present condition.

15. While those administrations as have been and as are being given, will be and are effective in a physical manner, they ONLY are of a temporary or of a putting OFF of conditions - unless the mental attitude, the nerve and the resultant expressions of same - through impulses to the physical organisms - are stimulated or brought - THROUGH the mental body, and THROUGH the physical forces - to near a coordination in system, the conditions CANNOT REMAIN in a normal state though only PHYSICALLY corrected!

16. In meeting, then, the needs of the physical forces, as we find them in this body, [272] we are speaking of, we would take more time to be holy in thought, in the expression of same. To forgive and not forget is to burden self physically AND mentally. To retain suppressions, through grudges, or discontent, is to build for a mental inability of control of self through an ideal that may attempt to be held before self in the mental and spiritual applications’ growth. In this direction the body should take thought, NOT of self so much as of the EXPRESSION of self’s, through self’s own application of the ideal held, as as it may reflect in the lives of others.

Physically, we would add those of a DIFFERENT INTERNAL preparation, or medication, as of THIS - not changing from those applications, either for the organs of pelvis or the local applications in nose, throat or ears - for when we correct that disturbance MENTALLY, those depressions and improper impulses physically and nervously, and change the vibratory forces in system - we may have a nearer NORMAL body. Change, then, as this, taken internally:

18. To 4 ounces of simple syrup, add:

Tincture Valerian…1/2 ounce, Elixir Calisaya…1/2 ounce, Tincture Stillingia…1/4 ounce, Iodide of Potassium, 10% solution…20 minims, Bromide of Potassium, 10% solution…10 minims, Tincture of Capsici…3 minims.

Shake solution together before the dose is taken, which would be half a teaspoonful 3 times each day, unless found necessary for the nervous reactions in evening - this taken in half a glass of water.

19. OSTEOPATHICALLY, correct those conditions existent in the cervical, upper dorsal and lumbar regions.

20. Keep the mind pure, and hold to an ideal, working or living better in a manifestation of that ideal. Ready for questions. We are through for the present.

”…The other questions you sent could not be asked in a Physical Reading. In fact, our time is so taken up with the Physical Readings that we do not attempt to give such information. According to the suggestions given in your Physical Reading, you should not dwell upon such things - it is not for your own good to do so…

“I think you will be able to have the prescription filled at the Greene Drug Co. there in Birmingham…”

R2. 12/4/30 Mrs. [272]‘s letter to EC:

”…I thank you so much for the Physical Reading. I think you have a wonderful talent. I am trying to follow your directions.

“Isn’t there some way in which you could answer the other question? If there is money on my father’s farm, it should be doing someone some good. I would like to spend some of it at your hospital next summer when school closes. I feel like it would be better for me if I could. A teacher’s finances, especially with all the expenses I have, could not afford a treatment like that now…”

R3. 6/10/31 Mrs. [272]‘s letter:

”…My health is still in deplorable condition, and medical science seems not to be able to handle it, for which I am not blaming them. I have thought that I would like for you to make another reading. If I can’t get well or if I can’t ever be any better, I believe it would give me greater peace of mind to know it…”

R4. 8/8/31 Mrs. [272] submitted questions for 272-2:

”…Where does the discharge from my uterus come from? Are the ovaries affected? The tubes? Where is the streptococci holding the infection?

“Where are the G.C. germs? Are G.C. [gonococcus?] [gonorrhea] germs in my bloodstream? Are G.C. germs attacking any other organs in my body than the sexual ones? Are G.C. germs in the pimples that are on my arms? Are local treatments with the chemicals going to get all the germs? Is the vaccine placed in my arm killing the germs? Am I going to have to have an operation later? If so, when? If not, when am I going to become well and normal again? When can I experience libido? Will it physically injure the organs under these conditions? Why can’t and haven’t I had a normal ‘orgasm’ at the proper time? What can be done to be normal? Does this fact cause the infection to be held in the sexual organs? Would circumcision help this condition? The joints in my fingers are painful; also right knee. Are these joints harboring G.C. germs? Is this condition affecting my heart? Why pains in the top, back part of my head? Why the pains center-front over my uterus? Why pains in my lower right side? Are my kidneys affected? Why does my food not digest at times? It seems to cause my stomach to press my heart. Will my sinus trouble clear up when my sexual organs become normal?

“I’m trying to be cheerful and expect a well, bright future. When?

“Did my Negro cook use my douche in April over a year ago? Is this Negro threatening and planning yet to injure me? What must I do under similar circumstances? Am I ever going to have any children? When? or why not? Does my husband love me? Can I stand childbirth if I get well? Am I going to live to be old? Do I have pyorrhea? What can I do for it? Why does my right eye seem so much weaker than the other one? Is my appendix affected? What can I do to increase the red blood cells?

“Did my husband pass the ‘bar’ examination last month? Is my husband going to be true to me? Am I going to get my last month’s teacher’s salary? How many months will we teach this year? Does teaching suit my health and personality better than any other profession? What work should I do for my health’s sake and happiness? Will I ever be a lawyer? Would I be happier as a business woman? If so, what business?

“Who are by best friends? Do I have any men admirers? Who? (Answer by description.)

“Under my conditions how can I be happy and have someone to love me? Does this person I see every other day love me? Will he ever love me? How can I gain his love?

“Are we going to be able to pay for our home, or are we going to lose it? Am I going to get any money soon?

“Is there money buried or hidden on my father’s farm 1 1/2 miles west of Larkinsville, Ala.? How much? Where is it? When am I going to get well? What do my in-laws think of me? Are any of them trying to turn my husband against me? How can I avoid this? How can I win my school principal’s and supervisor’s admiration? Who in my law classes likes me very much? Should I encourage this? Why the pain in my right lung?

“I want to know facts and the truth, for it is only in this way that we can act, and life will mean the most to us. If it is bad, I want to know the facts as you see them, for I have great confidence in your work.

“Please don’t shield me from some of the facts and smooth over some others which may sound ill. If you see other facts in my life which will make for my physical and social happiness, please point them out…

“I shall look forward with sympathetic cooperation and broadmindedness to your reading for me…”

R5. 8/18/31 EC gave her a Check Physical Reading only, 272-2.

R6. 1/14/32 Letter from [272]:

”…You have given me two readings without any practical value; however, the last was more definite than the first. I am ‘shot full’ of chemicals. Would this hinder? I hear you are out of business [at the Cayce Hospital]. Please come to Birmingham to give some readings. My previous reading was [272-2] 8/18/31. This was definite in a way, but I’m worse than ever. I don’t want any home treatments or any evading the question. If I’m never going to get rid of these germs, tell me so. Tell me where and by whom I could get the best results from an operation in the U.S. for my particular case. You seem to evade the issue when there is any foretelling concerned. Well, this is just what I want and you can give it if you will…”

R7. 3/18/32 Letter from [272]:

”…Could or would you tell me where I could go and what specialist to go to for my particular case? Could you, or would you tell me how to become cured or in other words how to get these germs out of my body? I could not cure myself, but would you tell me where and who to go to, to become cured? Some say that this trouble in a woman is never cured, but that there will always be some dormant germs. Would you affirm or deny this statement in my case?

“In your second reading, [272-2] in the answer to question No. 7 you said: ‘Be sure that the body keeps itself clear from any infectious force, or any association with the opposite sex in these applications as are being given for the body.’ Did you mean not to experience libido at all or with anyone?

“If I were to ask several questions as to where the germs were what good would it do, unless I knew how to kill them or knew some doctor to go to who could do it? Could you, or would you, prescribe so a doctor could carry out your instructions? This practice of going to a doctor every other day or two for the past two years is growing tiresome and getting on my nerves, beside the expense attached thereto. Every time the doctor tries to dismiss me the profuse discharge returns and germs are present. Is this going to be my experience for the remaining part of my life? “I do not know how to ask more definite questions than I asked on my second reading. In fact, I only want to know how to get these germs out of the body. My case seems hopeless.

“What about Johns Hopkins? What specialist could cure this case? If none could, would you tell me so?

“I believe I prefer this reading on some Saturday morning when I could be at home and you would be feeling at your best.

“Please let me hear from you as to what you think you could do for me under these circumstances. I presume that this reading will be $1O…”

R8. 3/23/32 EC wrote advising he would be glad to try again to help, but it would be necessary for her to sign a membership application to the new A.R.E. sponsoring his work (enclosed).

R9. 11/25/32 Letter from [272]:

”…Since your last reading, I have had local treatments of the cervix, vagina and glands. In connection with this I have had a vaccine given in the hip. This past August, the cervix was treated with electrical diathermy, and when that almost healed a cyst formed on the side of my womb. After this was punctured it discharged pus for some time. After my last menstrual period a profuse discharge was noticed. Where are the G.C. germs now? Are they in the glands, tubes, cervix, or are they further up than the cervix, - that is, in the walls of the uterus beyond the cervix? If they are up that far, what kind of treatment would reach them? Would another electrical diathermy treatment of the cervix get them? Would a curettment be advisable, or would that just scatter them and possibly throw them into the general system? Will the application of heat by electricity, such as I had last time, be hot enough to kill those germs? Would I get rid of these germs if I had the tubes and uterus taken out? Please tell me what doctor in Birmingham, or in the United States for that matter, who could give me entire relief?

“Would the operation which the doctor spoke of for me to be able to have an orgasm at the proper time and way, be advisable, or would I be in a worse condition than I am now in? Is this a case of just suffering and bearing one’s affliction?

“As to my Life Reading, [272-4] it seems to me that if my physical body could get relief, then I would be happier. Is this in the very near future or in the far distant future? Can you give dates? My married life seems unhappy. Why is this? Does my husband love me? Am I going to be married again? Am I going to get a divorce? It seems that my teaching life has been unhappy. Why? Am I ever going to practice law? Would I be happier and more successful at that work than I am now?

“In answer to question 10 in your reading of August 18, 1931, [272-2] ‘A condition where there would be the action of fetus for the system, should never occur’, was told to me. Since I should never have a baby, should we adopt one some day?

“Our finances are bothering us. Will we lose our home or are we going to get some money soon? Who would my husband be likely to practice law with, or will he start by himself; or will he never begin? Do you see any serious calamity just ahead of me and what could I do to divert this?

“Anything you tell me about the future, so I would know how to act would be appreciated…”

R10. 11/26/32 Letter from [272]:

”…Have just had a positive report on a smear made by the doctor this evening. I pray God to help you to please, please, please help me to find relief. Please tell me what to do? How can this be gotten rid of? I beg for help and mercy. Please help me!…”

R16. 10/21/33 Letter from [272]:

”…This is a testimony which I hope you may be able to use in helping someone else and in spreading the wonderful work you are doing.

“Several years ago I had a physical condition which seemed impossible for me to overcome. Then, one day in a psychology class in college Mr. Cayce and his work was discussed and I resolved to write to him in an effort to obtain help whereby my physical condition could be improved. Very soon a reading was given. Not knowing anything of a reading and the work in general, I was at a loss to know how to carry out the directions received through the reading, though the directions seemed very simple. Those I went to for help seemed willing to do anything in order to bring relief; but not knowing the complete conditions, hindered me in my efforts to become well. Several readings were given with almost the same results. It seemed impossible for me to apply them in my own condition. Yet, in my mind I would not give up for I had heard that many people had been helped through such readings. Deep within my own consciousness I felt that I, too, could get help through these channels of Mr. Cayce that would be of a personal application to me. My prayer was, that I would be shown how to apply that, that was given in my own life.

“Check Readings were given and then it seemed that gradually I began to comprehend more of the meaning and application of them in my own case. My mental condition changed and the readings became very personal, very encouraging, and very applicable. They fit me and my condition better than anything I could think of. They were the truth as it applied to me. The directions for the physical, mental, and spiritual improvement of myself were such that I thought they were easy of application. “There has been a story handed down since the Civil War, that money was buried on the farm of my father, Mr. […], located 1 1/2 miles west of Larkinsville, Ala. A person near Chicago, who does work similar to yours, told a friend of ours that there was some money there but that he would have to go to the farm in order to find it. Could you answer this question too? If it is necessary for you to go to the farm, I would be glad to carry you when you come to Birmingham.

“May I ask about the affair of my husband and his sister-in-law while they boarded with us? May I ask you to answer this question on a separate page as I do not mean to let him see the answer. I have forgiven and mean to drop it, except for my own satisfaction…”
