GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2722].
-
As we find, there are disturbances which prevent the better physical functioning with this body. In the present there is rather a complication, that may become rather serious unless there are measures taken soon for better corrective influences.
-
These disturbances have to do with a glandular condition, and the effect this has had and does produce upon, especially, the lymph circulation and drainages from same, combined with an infection that adds to the general disturbance of the inability to assimilate those influences necessary for better improvement.
-
Then, these are the conditions as we find them with this body, [2722] we are speaking of:
-
The blood supply indicates disturbances in the coordination between the lymph circulation and the general blood supply. Hence the accumulations in lymph pockets of those disturbing forces, or poisons, that are not drained through their normal channel. This produces pressures upon the nerve system. Thus the excruciating pains that occur at times in varied portions of the body, and the general drain and strain this produced upon the whole nerve system.
-
These are indicated in conditions which exist in the throat, the mouth, the neck and in areas along the cerebrospinal system, as well as that upsetting through the alimentary canal where such lymph accumulations in the general lymph system prevent normal drainages from the duodenum and through alimentary canal.
-
The sources of the nervous distresses are in the glandular forces, - as in the areas about the adrenals and the activities in the organs of the pelvis, as well as those activities from the secondary or the sympathetic nervous system.
-
As to the functionings of the organs themselves, - when there were those disturbances in the mouth or the gums and the removal of the teeth, this loosed so much of the poisons that had not been drained from this area as to bring about rather serious conditions to local areas, - though distributed in part through the lymph circulation, - combined with the GENERAL disturbance in the glandular force along the adrenals.
-
The WHOLE activity (that is, to other organs) we find in rather a sympathetic condition. And these are reflexed through the activity of the organs, as upon the whole sensory system, the throat, bronchi and larynx, the irregularity because of the necessity of sedatives that cause more tie-ups of the eliminations. Thus the organs of alimentary canal find disturbances, - as the lower end of duodenum where it empties into the jejunum and through the colon.
-
As we find, in making corrections that would be the more beneficial for this body:
-
We would keep up the osteopathic adjustments, but make these more for the relaxing and setting up of drainages through the alimentary canal, rather than for stimulation of circulation to the upper portions of the body; that is, head, neck and the throat and bronchi areas.
-
We would begin at once with small doses of Atomidine. Take one minim in half a glass of water of morning before any meal is taken. Each day increase this one drop, until five drops are being taken. Then leave off.
-
After the Atomidine has been left off one day, begin with Mullein Tea; that is to be made preferably from the green or fresh Mullein. Put about a dram of the bruised leaves in an enamel or glass container and pour a pint of boiling water over same; letting this set for at least twenty to thirty minutes. Drink each day at least two ounces of this tea - for five days.
-
Then leave off one day, and begin with the Atomidine again - taking it as before; continuing to alternate these in the manner indicated.
-
The continuation of these, with the variation indicated in the character of the osteopathic adjustments, should bring help for this body.
-
When there is pain, - as in the back of the neck, the face, the jaw, or through the lower portion of the back, or even across the abdomen close to the liver and the area where the duodenum empties, - apply Mullein Stupes. Use the larger leaves, bruised, that have floated or been allowed to stand in the boiling water for about ten minutes, - that is, pour the boiling water over same, you see, and allow to set a few minutes; then dip out the leaves and apply on gauze over the area, being covered with other cloths, you see; neck, throat, jaw, back or abdomen. These should be applied hot, but not so hot as to burn the skin, or course. Put these on gauze, and then on the body, the neck and the throat. They may be applied two or three times a day, see?
-
As to the diet, - to be sure the inability for the proper assimilation brings disturbances and weakness to the body.
-
Prepare beef juice, - not stew, but beef juice. Take this regularly as medicine, a teaspoonful at least every three hours apart, but take a minute or minute and a half to just sip that quantity; letting it dissolve or assimilate in the mouth with the flow of saliva. This may be seasoned to suit the taste, and taken with, or soaked with, a whole wheat cracker or a piece of whole wheat toast.
-
Also use whole grain cereals; both wheat and oats.
-
Include, too, at least once or twice a week some broiled fish in the diet.
-
Have vegetables, preferably in soups - until there is a better ability of masticating the foods.
-
Keep the eliminations well, even though it becomes necessary to take colonic irrigations. Especially after the second week it would be well, in any case, to have a colonic irrigation professionally given; to remove the drosses and drainages that should have been set up by the stimulation to the glandular forces of the body through the Atomidine AND the activity of Mullein in the system.
-
These as we find should relieve, and bring better conditions. Of course, it may be necessary for sedatives - but keep away from these as much as possible. But do not allow the pains to become so severe as to be too great a strain upon the general nervous system.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Why does the head keep pulling and jerking? (A) The incoordination between the sympathetic and the cerebrospinal system. Thus the necessity, as indicated, for the application of the Mullein Stupes when there is pain or jerking. This is the effect of the clots of the lymph in the muscular and nerve forces in the neck and head.
-
We are through for the present.

Mullein should be gathered green, growing wild, at this time of year. If not, it may be secured from a crude drug house.
At you convenience, please let us have the technical name of your disturbance, according to the physicians, so we may properly index it in our files.
Under separate cover we are sending - from our local druggist - a bottle of Atomidine, as you may not be able to get it there.)

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/8/42 Husband [4959]‘s ltr. to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Virginia
My Dear Friend Edgar:
I should have immediately written to you upon receipt of the bottle of Atomidine which you so kindly sent, abut have been up to my ears in work here, which suddenly developed. Usually my work is not near as heavy as it formerly was, which is a very good thing for me, as I could not keep on working long as I formerly did. But now the rush is over, and I hasten to acknowledge receipt of your letter containing the “reading”, your personal letter, and then later, the bottle of medicine; for all of which I certainly do appreciate your kindness and help.
[2722] has, of course, gotten started on the course of treatment as suggested in the reading. We see no improvement yet, but I guess can hardly expect that in trouble of such long duration. You might be interested in knowing just what has been done, so here goes:
We were able to secure the green mullein, and also one old package of the dried mullein before we got hold of the green. We find that according to directions, the amount ordered for the tea is very much stronger from the dried, than from the green. Do you think we ought to make the green tea stronger than directed? As for the stoops, that is about the only thing my wife just couldn’t make work, and so she has stopped using them. We can get plenty of green mullein now, but she finds that when they are scalded, and then placed on cloths or gauze as directed, till she applied them they were already cold. The last time she tried them I suggested she just keep them on and apply her hot electrical pad over the top, and this kept them warm. But she now uses the hot electrical pad and has dropped the other entirely, as she says she must almost be in a tub of water to apply the green mullein hot, or on a rubber mat in bed. However, we understand this is only to reduce the pain. She is following everything else according to directions.
Dr. Woodall thought the “reading” was all right, and has since followed the suggestions as outlined. As it is so hard for [2722] to get to Birmingham and back on the street car, he suggested just two treatments a week, and that is what she is getting now. She has also taken her colonic irrigations, and as there were no directions as to how often to take them, she is only taking one a week. We hope that this is enough to do the work necessary.
I don’t know whether I said anything in my letter to you concerning the Thelin shots which my wife has been taking from Dr. Horn now for at least a year; five shots, with a day between each shot, commencing shortly after each menstruation. We do not know whether these should be continued with your suggested treatments, but she has taken them so far, but is suffering more and more from the effects of them, and has practically made up her mind not to take any more of these.
Your treatments suggested, and the “reading”, suggest that some of her trouble is caused from the sedatives she is taking, and there should be a gradual reducing of the amount. She has tried once or twice to take less than formerly, but suffers so that she has not been able to do this as yet. For your information she is taking Tabloid Tablets, through her physician here, and has been taking them for sometime. We understand they are a very good grade of sedative, but like all such things, are habit-forming. We are hoping in the near future she can reduce on the amount. She takes one before each meal, and two at bedtime. If she feels real bad she sometimes takes two before the evening meal.
After her treatments in Birmingham of late she finds it awfully hard and trying to get back to … and sometimes feels as though she can hardly reach home. Hope that this eases up soon. I believe I have about covered the situation in regards to [2722] feeling that you would be interested in the same.
My daughter, […] is finishing her first year’s college work at, - where do you think, - Judson College. She has entered into the work and has made quite a name for herself the first year. Has been one of seven on the Honor Roll of some eighty Freshmen at the end of every quarter thus far, and understands that she is or has been either second or third in that group. She seems to enjoy the work thoroughly, and is well liked by all. Thought you would enjoy this news.
Trust you and yours are very well. If there is anything further I need to know, pr anything else, to be sure, or that you have to suggest, regarding [2722] and her treatments, or anything else, to be sure, will be glad to hear from you. Will try to keep you informed as time goes on.
Very truly and Sincerely Yours, [4959]
R2. 5/26/42 Letter: “Shall patient continue or discontinue the “thelin” [Estrone?] shots? I believe I have the right word, Edgar, but I am referring to the shots given her by her medical doctor in series of fives, every other day, after each menstruation; which shots she has been taking for a long time, but which she discontinued this month because she has been in such pain and these shots cause her more pain in her arm and in her system.
“Have been putting off writing this letter, hoping that a change would come, but [2722]‘s condition is certainly no better, in fact, really worse than before, and so I just feel that we must have another Reading, if possible, to find out if we are going about the suggestions in the right way, or if something is missing somewhere. With the exception of the “stupes” and the eating of broiled fish in the diet, I believe my wife has faithfully followed all suggestions given by you in your Reading; but she is in more pain than ever, is perfectly miserable at times, very often can’t even get quiet at all, feels wretched after treatments, and is becoming very discouraged and wondering what will become of her. Even Dr. Woodall is discouraged, and can’t understand why his treatments do not bring results, and he is again suggesting, as he did before we got your Reading, that she go to a reputable nerve surgeon; he seems to feel that he has given her the best he has, and she needs something else done to bring results. Of course we do not want to go further if at all possible. So I am writing this letter requesting another Reading.
“[2722] has extreme pain at times in her upper back and shoulders, collar-bone, and neck and head. She suffers with pain in her back, and pain in her knees; and when her head pulls much there is also a sore and trembling feeling through her lower back. Her eyes trouble her exceedingly. We had her eyes examined and new glasses made last Fall. Then we had “near” glasses made extra for her at home, etc. These all trouble her at times now, she often sees better without any glasses, that is, more easily, and at times can hardly see at all. Her gums and jaws hurt practically all the time. After treatments she finds it harder and harder to get back home, can hardly see, is faint, and dizzy. Also finding it harder to get quiet to sleep. She has been hoping to cut down on the sedatives, but really needs them more than ever, and has not been able to reduce on them yet.”
R3. Undated Questions:
- Are the treatments, both colonic and osteopathic, being given in the right manner?
- Are two osteopathic treatments a week and one colonic (which is what she has been getting right along) enough, or too much, or the right proportion?
- Is the colonic treatment when given on the same day as the osteopathic, to be given before the osteopathic treatment, as has been done all along, or after?
- Why does she feel so badly after treatments?
- Is there any way the Mullein stupes can be used; or can she leave them off as she has been doing, simply because she doesn’t seem to be able to handle them satisfactorily?
- How can she taper off on the use of the Tabloid (sedative) tablets, or should she continue taking them until pain is less severe?
- Is there any improvement internally but which is upsetting system and causing the excess pain and pulling of the head?
- Should she continue or discontinue the “thelin” shots?
- Should she continue with treatments as at present, or should something else be suggested?
- Will she soon begin to get relief if the suggestions is to continue with treatments?

B2. 4/6/42 Husband [4959]‘s ltr. to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
My Dear Friend Edgar:
Again I am in trouble. This time not myself, for I have learned to take things quietly and easily, and am getting along pretty well. But my wife needs help, and needs it quickly. I have mentioned you to her a number of times, but it is only now that she has requested I seek your service. As I understand, that is almost required of adult persons, that they themselves request it, and not some one for them.
My wife’s [2722] trouble, I guess, dates back to when I was sick, three and half years ago. She overworked and overtaxed herself, then, and was under her doctor for a long time, but finally snapped out of it. Then she developed trouble again, and had all her back teeth pulled, and plates made; but her gums never did heal right, and she never could wear the plates. She went for about a year with only her front teeth, and then got bad in health again, and another dentist advised the balance of her teeth [be] removed. On hearing of her previous trouble, he decided he would pull all the upper teeth at one time and put the plate in immediately. He did this. [2722] suffered terribly, but went through with it. Then came the time to pull the lowers; and he did the same thing, but she was a nervous wreck by this time, and she suffered agony with the lower plate, and finally had to stop wearing it. That dentist made two uppers and I believe three lower plates, but even yet she can only keep them in her mouth for short periods, and cannot use them to chew a bite. With the result she hasn’t been getting the food she needs and craves and has been under the doctor’s care all along. And the worst finally developed, her nerves had given way, and now she had a continual pulling of her head to the side, and, at times, it just bobs up and down. When it continued to get worse under her family doctor, he finally sent her to a neurologist in Birmingham, who advised certain things to be done, but they did not help a particle, and she has gradually gotten worse. About six weeks ago she started taking three treatments a week from our old osteopathic friend, Dr. Woodall, in Birmingham; but she still continues to get worse. Besides, the trip to Birmingham, especially as most of them have to be made on the trolley car, is very trying for her, as her head is pulling and jerking all the time. She can’t attend any public gathering and has not for a long time, as it is agony to try to sit still. She can’t eat in public; can’t eat a lot of things she would like to; has been taking sedatives ever since last November, and also during the time I was sick. She can’t read anything, or do any work which requires concentration, and, I can tell you, is in a bad shape. Her one comfort is that when she finally falls asleep at night she relaxes and the pulling stops. Once in a while in the afternoon, when laying down, it relaxes under electric heat; but more often she suffers more trying to rest and would feel better if she would get up and keep going. All of the doctors who have prescribed or treated her also state that the change of life has also much to do with her condition.
Of course, it is impossible to go further with her mouth and plates until she becomes stronger and her jaws and gums heal. Besides, she is too nervous, and couldn’t sit in a dentist’s chair to get a fitting for a plate while her head is continually moving and jerking. Believe me, my wife is really suffering, is extremely nervous, and very despondent. Please do your best for her.
Enclosed please find my check for Twenty-five Dollars, which, I believe, is the sum I have usually paid for a reading. If the reading calls for haste, you might reply by telegraph, but there is no night delivery in … so that would not help much. We are home every evening after six o’clock, at … …, Alabama, and suggest, if possible, to give a night reading upon receipt of this letter, or as soon thereafter as possible. If the reading is complicated, please give me the necessary instructions, etc., so that we will understand and do the right thing.
Haven’t heard from you for a long time, and trust you and yours are well, happy and prosperous.
Remember me to your folks.
Sincerely yours, [4959]
