GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with further suggestions for corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2722]; this we have had before.
-
As we find, conditions in the present indicate there is an overanxiety on the part of those making the administrations; to the point where, as might be said, it has been “overdone.” And that there has not been the improvements should be accredited to the lack of some of the administrations which we have outlined for the body’s betterment.
-
In the present, then, we would administer the Mullein Stupes to the back of neck and shoulders. Use as large leaves as practical. Bruise them and put in very hot water, letting them stand - or steep - for a few minutes before taking out. Though it may make a messy application, we find that these will be effective. Apply on gauze, but cloth over same, and then an electric pad may be applied to keep same warm. This will aid. For, these will add to the system the helpful forces in alleviating pain through head and neck.
-
Also we would take internally a tea made from Mullein. Pour about a pint of boiling water on a dram of the tender leaves of the Mullein and let steep. Take about two ounces of this every other day. Make fresh each time. Do not try to keep over a two-day period.
-
The colonic irrigations have become irritating. These should ONLY be taken to keep down any accumulations of inflammation through the intestines.
-
But DO have once each week a relaxing through the general hydrotherapy treatment, - including a very light sweat first, then some Witchhazel fumes. That is, put two teaspoonsful of Witchhazel in about two ounces of water that would be boiled in a croup cup or some such container under the body while in the cabinet, see? so that the boiling fumes would settle over the body. This would be the way to give the Fume Bath. This will relax the body and will help the nerves, if used properly. Following the Fume Bath the body should be massaged gently but thoroughly following the nerves along the spine, along the limbs, with a combination of oils in these proportions:
Olive Oil…1 ounce, Peanut Oil…1 ounce, Oil of Lanolin…1 dram.
-
The osteopathic treatment may be given on the same day, and this - too - we would now change to once a week. These, too, have been too stimulating. If these treatments are made to be more RELAXING than stimulating, we will get better results. But we would keep these up. Take them slow, easy, and they will be better for the body.
-
We would leave off the injections. These as we find are producing greater irritation to the general nervous upset.
-
Taking of the Mullein Tea and administering the Mullein Stupes should ENABLE the body to keep away from the sedatives. But do not overtax the system. Use a hypnotic rather than a narcotic as the sedative. These as we find would be the better.
-
Stay in the open, of course, as much as practical. These are helpful influences - out of doors, in the sunshine when practical, enlivening company about the body is better.
-
Doing these things, there should be improvements.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is there any improvement internally but which is upsetting system and causing the excess pain and pulling of the head? (A) As indicated, there is rather the lack of improvement - yet not a going backward, but more irritation, see?
-
(Q) Any other advice? (A) Do these things and keep the helpful, hopeful attitude in every way.
-
We are through for the present.

R1. 6/2/42 [4959]‘s ltr. to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
My Dear Edgar:
Your second reading came last Sunday morning. We could not do anything about it then but just study it; nor yesterday, when we both went to Marion and brought […] back with us to spend the Summer. Today, at home, is unpacking and sorting and getting ready things for the wash, etc. So nothing can be accomplished on the reading as yet, though I am getting some green mullein late this afternoon. Tomorrow [2722] and […] are planning to go to Birmingham, and then my wife will consult with Dr. Woodall as per your new instructions, and find out from him who best can give her the new therapy treatments you suggest. However, [2722] has exposed her back to the sun a while on Sunday afternoon, and expects to do some of that, and, is going to apply the stupes as suggested, and when she can stand more time in the sun, will try applying them and sitting in the hot sun, which should prove as effective as the electric heat inside. We believe the reading does give us a new guide. Perhaps Dr. Woodall was too earnest in bringing about a cure; I know he has certainly tried hard to get results. It is just another case of how little the doctors really know after all, - in some cases. Then too, the lady who is giving the colonic irrigations thought [2722] was very foolish in not taking three a week for a while. I though she should take at least two; but from your letter [2722] thinks she will just take one every other week or so. As for the thelin shots, [2722] has been taking them for a long time now, every month; but has felt that they have done her more harm than good, so this past month did not take them. Perhaps the only thing in the reading not specific is the atomodyne Atomidine]. The first reading states how it should be taken in successive days and increasing quantities, then skip a day or so, and start with the mullein tea. This reading simply states to take the mullein tea according to directions, and so [2722] is going to follow the new suggestion instead of the first one. Thanks so very, very much for the reading, and the quickness with which it was given, for though [2722] has been held up on it as I have stated above, it does relieve her mind some to get the reading and the new information given. She will be following all directions given from tomorrow on.
Whatever the charges are, please let me know.
I am enclosing herewith check for One Dollar for which please send me copy of your new book “A Search for God”.
Again assuring you of our sincere thankfulness, and promising to let you hear of the progress my good wife makes, - and I am sure it will be progress and real health again, I remain,
Gratefully yours [4959]
P.S. Will you please autograph the book before sending.
R2. 7/13/42 [4959]‘s ltr. to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
My Dear Friend Edgar:
I know you must think me an ingrate in not writing sooner considering all the things you have done for me, but I have been quite upset, and have had my hands full; besides, my Judge’s wife was terribly sick and finally died, and that cut into my time and thoughts also. Then too, [2722]‘s condition has been such I just didn’t know what to write, but feel I must get this to you now.
First I want to thank you for the Book you so kindly sent me and so wondrously autographed, - “A Search for God”. I can easily see that to digest it well one must really study it. I have given it a hasty examination, and hope in my leisure to get down to it and see if I can understand all of it. I recognize the principles taught from some of the circulars you sent me years ago. It is so different from the ordinary run of religious thoughts that I will not pass any judgement on it until I have given it some real study and thought. I do thank you for sending it to me.
My wife has not improved any, with all of the treatments, in fact, if anything is steadily getting worse. I just can’t understand it. She had some trouble in securing a masseur who would follow the directions you suggested, and lost some valuable weeks that way. Then she did finally get in touch with a masseur, a woman on Highland Avenue, Birmingham, who was equipped and willing to give the treatments just as you suggested; but [2722] has only had two treatments so far from her, and last week had to pass it by on account of her condition. This week she hopes to take two treatments from this lady, one reason being that Dr. Woodall is on vacation this week, and another is she has felt so much better after the two treatments she did receive, and even better for a few days afterwards, and I have been telling her to take two treatments from her for a while and see if she doesn’t get some relief. Dr. Woodall has told my wife several times that he knew he was not benefitting her any, and is willing to give up any time she is, that he can’t understand why she does not improve, that he has done his best. He suggests again that she consult Dr. Chalmers Moore, a specialist in nerve surgery. But as your readings do not suggest anything like that, I am afraid she will really get in trouble if there is to be any cutting. Of course, Dr. Woodall only suggested that she consult him and see what he would advise. Then again, my wife has had to give up the “stoops” of mullein leaves. For one thing it is a terrible mess to go through with; another thing she seems to be really worse after each application than before; and a third reason and right now the most decisive, is the fact that mullein is now drying up down here and the large green leaves are turning brown and dry. My wife has been trying to cut down a little on the Tabloid tablets, realizing they are habit-forming; but some nights has suffered so terribly, moaning, crying and in such awful pain and unable to sleep, that I finally insisted her peace of mind was worth more than the trouble, and one night last week actually had to take four of them to get to sleep; she has never taken more than three a night before, and only a few times at that; the regular dose for an evening being two at bedtime, and one before each meal. Her eyes are bothering her something awful. She feels that they are troubling her so much and there must be something wrong with her eyes. Her eye doctor told her at the beginning of her troubles, when she was tested out for new glasses, that there was nothing wrong especially, and the nerve doctor, Dr. Morton, also examined her eyes and said he saw nothing wrong with them. At times my wife can hardly see. I think it is the continued pulling of the nerves in her neck and head which is affecting them. Her jaws are giving her as much trouble as when she had her first set of teeth. She can’t read at all, and doesn’t even try, for the moment she tries to focus her head to try to read her head just pulls in all directions. She can’t eat with satisfaction, and can’t eat the things she wants to eat. The electric pad does give her some relief when she suffers the most; but think of having to use an electric pad in the hot weather we have been having. Once she gets to sleep at night she does sleep the whole night through; and sometimes in the afternoon she can sleep some, and at times even though she can’t sleep she can keep her head quiet, but often times it just keeps pulling and jerking, and at those times she gets up in far worse condition than when she laid down, and it is usually following such afternoons that she suffers so excruciatingly, and when those times are on, she suffers so terribly that I am not only afraid she will lose her mind but do something rash. I tell you, Edgar, it surely is a problem. Then too, we had suggested in the last reading that you might inquire as to about how long her condition would last before there was improvement. That question was not asked, at least, in the printed reading; and as many women tell her the menopause lasts from one to seven years, she is afraid that probably you asked the question and receiving an unsatisfactory reply, did not include it in the printed reading; or, on the other hand, if she has to go through this torment for some years, then she wants to die. Then again she is haunted with the fear that even with the menopause over, she will still have the continued jerking and pulling of her head. Of course, you and I know that her condition brings about all these morbid fears; I do my best to brush them aside; but the fact remains, she is not getting any better, and, at times, is decidedly worse.
I have just opened up my heart to you, Edgar; I know you have done your best, and she has tried to follow all your suggestions except possibly with the “stoops”, and she has tried that too. I am really afraid something tragic may happen, which, of course, she would not be responsible for, but her daughter might never understand. I am not telling [2722] about writing this letter. Have been waiting and hoping some change for the better would set in and she would become more cheerful, but that has not happened, so I am writing you in confidence, to ask if there is anything else you can suggest, - I will be glad to pay the bill. Money is pretty scarce; the War always cuts in on the Court Reporter; and I have been spending right and left, as it were, on [2722] practically since I had my very expensive attack three and a half years ago; and with […] in College, I am spending more than I am earning, and have now since I was sick. But I do not mention that because of you; I have always believed in your psychic powers, and they proved wonderfully beneficial to me; but somehow, they have not seemed to help [2722]. You remember years ago you gave her a reading, but nothing ever came of it because we at that time could not get the electric machine made as ordered. [See 2722-1 and 2722-2.]
Before closing, I might mention another thing: so many women are telling her to get her female organs out, and get it all over with. My wife hears these things, is gradually getting worse, at times suffering terribly, and it just makes her the more upset. You are not to blame for any of this, and you and I know her condition just helps to make these matters she hears on all sides all the worse. Then too, she is scared of the result of the Tabloid tablets, - as she may well be; but I can’t tell her that; I can only tell her to take them when she suffers so or she would go crazy.
With all of this rambling letter, Cayce, perhaps I can sum it all up by saying that she seemingly is not a bit better, suffers more than she used to, is becoming more despondent all the time, and if you think it would do any good, with all this information before you, would you suggest another reading. I will be glad to pay for it. I might add she is at home every evening, and most days except when in Birmingham taking a treatment. […] is now home with us, and expects to drive her mother to Birmingham either this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon for a masseur treatment, and then again on Friday afternoon. At other times she will be a home, including Sundays. However, if you feel that another reading is called for, just wire me at my expense the hour and day you will give it, and I will see that she is at home. Now you can see why I have been holding off from writing, - just waiting and hoping for some improvement, but none has so far appeared. Another thing I just thought of: Isn’t there some preparation she could rub over her neck and shoulders and possibly in the back of her head when the pain becomes so intense?
Sorry to have to trouble you with my troubles, but I know you will understand I am writing from my heart, and, at this time, unknown to [2722] and whatever you suggest, I will abide by. However, if she does not soon improve, I am afraid she will want me to take her to Mayo’s Clinic, if she is then able to go. I have told you now about all there is to tell.
Very sincerely your friend, [4959]
P.S. If you do give a reading let me know whether to tell her about it.
R3. 7/15/42 Have her remain home Saturday afternoon for Reading. Otherwise advise.
