This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 16th day of February, 1933, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [274], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mrs. [778].

1. EC: Yes, we have the entity and those relations with the universe, and universal forces, that are latent and manifested in the personality and in those innates that manifest through the individuality of the entity now called … Paul [He had listed his middle name Alexandre!] [274].

2. In entering the present experience from an astrological view, many of the impulses we find influenced by the sojourn of the entity in varied experiences of the astrological spheres; and the influences of these are rather the impulse, while the influences of the earth’s sojourn and the experiences in same are rather the manifestations in activity. Hence we have the combined influence in an entity’s experience, which becomes rather the basic influence from heredity and environ; or the same first law as of cause and effect in the experience of an entity.

3. The hereditary influence from the purely material, or from a nationalism influence, is apparent in each entity; but has there been sought much concerning why an entity seeks a manifestation through such hereditary influence? Has not this been rather the BASIC force through the activities of the entity in its passage THROUGH the varied spheres of experience? Hence becomes more DEFINITE influence.

4. As to what an entity does concerning its environs or hereditary influence from the MATERIAL viewpoint, this is governed by the action of the will (that active principle making for the INDIVIDUALITY of an entity, from those atomic forces that may manifest in a material plane or in ANY sphere of material or matter existence). Thus is MAN endowed with the individual soul.

5. Hence the WILL is an ATTRIBUTE of the soul, and the whole development of an entity.

6. An entity, then, is the COMPOSITE activity throughout the experience in every phase of its independent existence from the first cause, or creative influence.

7. As to the astrological aspects for this entity, now called … Alexandre [274], the ruling influences are in Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn.

8. Saturn’s influence is rather in that position of making for the creative, renewing, or adding to old principles by the element of a constructive influence for a definite activity; which has been seen so well manifested in many experiences of the entity in its sojourn through the varied or different experiences in the earth.

9. The Mercurian influence is for a high MENTAL ability, as well as an adaptability to the various influences that affect the mental (this being in the broader sense of mental, in the MATERIAL-mental as well as the higher or super forces in its activity) and that are being used through the principles held or maintained by activities of the entity.

10. Jupiter makes for abilities in many varied directions; the associations with a great number of individuals, dealing in principles that are of a basic influence and that tend to make for the larger ENNOBLING influences in the experience, or that make up (when classed from the composite sense) the activities of the entity. Or, as may be termed, there is nothing little or underhanded, or superfluous, in the make-up of the entity in its present experience, as in its dealing with its fellow man or in its activities one with another; making for a TRUSTING nature, and the trustworthiness that may be put in the activities of the entity as related to associations with others.

11. Yet, as seen from other influences from Saturn and Mars, the entity is rather RESERVED in its nature - or in the activities towards MAKING contacts with various groups; working over oft in the MIND, in the MENTAL abilities, as to what WOULD be well, but slow in CARRYING such to fruition until contacts or associations have been made through some definite channel or manner from some outside influence.

12. The entity, however, has the abilities to give much impetus to building on what has been the failure of another. This is true in material things as well as mental conditions and experiences.

13. As to the appearances, and their influence upon the present experience of the entity, THESE - of course - are only those that INFLUENCE to the GREATER degree the activities physically of the entity in the present:

14. Before this we find the entity was in that period when there was the seeking out new associations by a people in a great land, newly discovered (the native land in the present of the entity). Then the entity was among those of an expedition who came to the new land, and - in the name Jacques Fond du Lac - gained through much hardship in the material conditions as well as developments in the MENTAL influences of the experience. The entity made many tours through various portions of the southland (in the new land to which the entity came), in what is now known as Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and toward the north. Hence the various activities that were considered as NATURAL to the varied portions of the country became of special interest to the entity.

15. As the developments come in the present experience, in the various fields of material endeavor in which the entity engages, it will be found that the association or idea of the flower and the fungi of this PARTICULAR region will not only prove an interesting MENTAL experience to the entity but will - and can - be turned into MATERIAL benefits, to aid in carrying out or furthering many of the ideas as to benefits that may be derived for the gratifying, or satisfying, of some of the impulses in human experience in this particular plane.

16. Before this we find the entity was in that land now known as the Arabian, [Uhjltd period?] during those periods when there was the re-establishing of the land from the inroads that had been made by the people from both the north and east. The entity, in the name Ferri, gained in the abilities to present to the peoples (though they were of SCATTERED groups and undecided as to activities) the mental, material and spiritual influences that are - and may be - the impelling force for activities in a group, a nation, a class or a mass, in their working together for the common GOOD.

17. The entity then gathered much from the varied influences that had been brought to the peoples by these over-runnings from the various types and groups of people; and builded much that made for the beauty of the arts pertaining to, especially, the furnishings for the household and for the use of people in their quieter moments; and in the activities that made for the building up of the hearthstone, or home, by a TROUBLED people.

18. Much that the entity builded in that period is still held as the criterion by those who are under the influence of the environs in that particular area.

19. The entity gained in service; losing only when the efforts became of such a nature as to cause the aggrandizing of selfish interests.

20. In the present there comes, from this experience, the entity’s tendency from WITHIN to BELITTLE self; and to be dependent upon others for the ideals of ideas, associations, even in those things that may have become very active in the mental abilities of the entity.

21. Before this we find the entity was among those who reestablished the influences in what is now known as (or then called) the Chaldean country, during the periods when there was the bringing in of those peoples from what has been termed the Holy Land, or that peculiar people. [Abraham’s time?]

22. The entity then was the one in charge of much of the work to which these varied peoples were put in this land. Not of the soldiery, but rather of that division which made for the COMMERCIAL advancements of this peculiar people, and was in the name then of Bazzyndizhellii.

23. In the experience the entity gained much in the MENTAL activities, through the associations of the varied MINDS and peoples from this peculiar land.

24. And, much of the ability that has ever been in the present experience of the entity, as a judge of precious stones, gold, silver, and the alloys that may be added in their activities for creating adornments, or for the usages in various activities of human experience, came UNDER the influence and through the experience of the entity in this particular sphere.

25. This ability also, as we find, may be that PHASE of the entity’s experience, if it will be turned into the direction of the mystic-occult influences in archaeological research with those who may seek out this particular field of endeavor; for the ENTITY’S activities lie farther to the north of that which has been sought out in this PECULIAR land, or particular land, and the FACTORIES (as would be termed today) may be discovered by the entity in a search in the Chaldean land.

26. Before this we find the entity was in that known as the Poseidian land, during those periods when the people had come from Muir, Ur, Lemuria, and the other lands, for the indwelling of the various activities, the seeking together for the divining of many activities or principles in human endeavor.

27. The entity then was among those who would be termed in the present the alchemists of the period, and was in the name Aa-rr-ll-uu (as would be termed in the present, from the combination of those sounds).

28. In the experience the entity gained, lost and gained; for much was turned into the abilities of subserving people to the whims or fancies of the entity.

29. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, that to which it may attain, and how:

30. In the particular fields of endeavor in the present there are the abilities to combine those elements with particular activities in an immediate portion of the present land, or sojourn. The efforts in this direction may make for both material and mental influences that may be helpful or beneficial to the entity.

31. Also there lies the ability within the entity for the seeking out, through associations with groups or individuals who may act in the capacity of research in a particular field of archaeology. The entity may join with such a group, through the abilities for testing peculiar types of materials or associations, and thus lead into that which may bring to the experience of the entity a development in a different field.

32. Choose thou; knowing that the abilities are present. As to what self will do with the knowledge which is innate, or that intelligii [? intelligence?] which is the “I AM” within self, depends upon what is set as the IDEAL, and the ideal relations with the groups, individuals, or associates. Know that, to use such for self alone is to use for self’s undoing; but to use for the magnifying of that which is held AS the ideal is a development of self mentally, spiritually, materially, toward the ideal set before self.

R1. 3/26/33 He wrote: “I sincerely apologize for not having answered your February letter before.

“I have received your Life Reading with great interest, but I wanted to have Mrs. [778]‘s interpretation on certain parts a little difficult to interpret or to understand and correlate. She thinks highly of your psychic ability and of your sincere desire to help. And I have great confidence in her. ALL for the best!

“I had in Paris a good scientific education in physics and chemistry with a personal desire for research. Living necessities have brought me in N.Y. City in contact with Perfumes and Cosmetics concerns principally, and I am now working with one of them as Chief Chemist. Which does not seem out of place if I interpret your reading correctly.

“The archaeological field would be new, but would probably answer some strong, though not clear, desire I have always had for some research in some distant country, and also very actual interest in mysticism. So I will study along that line and seek proper connections.

“As Mrs. [778] has predicted astrologically some radical changes in my life this year, a ck. rdg. with definite questions might be very helpful a little later - about ‘associations and places’ as you mention yourself at the end of your reading. What would you suggest?”

[He then proceeded to ask for a Physical Reading.]

R2. 4/18/33 He obtained Physical Rdg. 274-2.

R3. 5/20/33 He wrote:

“I attended the N.Y. meeting of the Association with great interest. [Edgar Cayce Foundation dinner meeting 5/18/33.] I was introduced to your son Hugh Lynn] whose words of greeting I appreciated as much as I did his excellent talk later. And of course I was very glad indeed to see you and to listen to you, because I felt your sincere kindness, your deep devotion, your modest but strong will to help, and help, and help, not only individuals but a humanity weakened and troubled so very much!

“To show you this appreciation, I am sending my application for Active Membership. I shall not be able to do much at the beginning because of personal conditions, but will endeavor to participate actively to the best of my ability as soon as I can.”

R4. 6/8/33 He obtained a Mental-Spiritual Rdg. 274-3.

R5. 6/2/34 He obtained Ck. Life Rdg. 274-7 answering questions in re his life and work.

R6. 11/2/34 Rdg. 1932-2 for a young man about ready to take his bar examination told him to become associated with, what we interpreted to be, Mr. [274]‘s French cosmetic and perfume firm.

R7. 1/11/36 Mr. [274] wrote: “Pressing matters and trips have obliged me to put aside a number of things, not because of lack of interest but because of a lack of time. Among them, I am sorry to say are your Bulletins. So, I think the best answer to your kind inquiries would be given through you by appropriate ck. rdgs., one ck. physical for my wife [598-2], one ck. physical for me [274-9], and one ck. life for me [274-10].”

R8. 1/25/36 He obtained Ck. Life 274-10.

R9. 5/16/36 Ck. Physical 274-12 indicated that astrologically he was passing through a period when the mucous membranes of head and throat were being affected.

R10. 6/4/38 He wrote: “I hope everything is well with you, your family and the Association.

“Due to a long and terrible illness of my mother (which ended last year with her death), I have been away from the States for a long time.

“Now I am back in N.Y. in the same line of chemical work, but with another concern. Everybody seems to complain about business, not knowing the luck they have to be far away from the European mess!

“I am very perplexed about some important decision to take rapidly concerning a position which has been offered me through a common friend. So I am wondering whether or not a reading would help.

“It would be to go to Campinas, near Sao Paulo, Brazil, as perfume and cosmetics chemist for a well established Brazilian firm, primarily known for its soaps. The position, which calls for a two-year contract is financially attractive, - though the Brazilian laws make it extremely difficult to take any money out of the country. And then political conditions there are not so well settled at all! And the climate and new ways of living are to be considered, etc.”

R11. 6/8/38 Ck. Life Rdg. 274-13 advised him to take the job in Brazil.

R12. 7/9/38 He wrote: “Thank you very much for the readings [274-13 and 274-14]…

“I do not expect to go to South America before September. Will always keep in touch with you anyway.”

R13. 2/23/41 He wrote from NYC: “Far away for two years, I have not heard from the Association, but I hope everything is well with you and yours.

“Our shaking world certainly does need Enlightenment of the right kind, for the lack of true spiritual values is at the base of our troubles.

“Faith, clear vision of the essentials of life, acting in accordance with those Christian principles set forth beautifully so long ago we need from everyone, unselfishly.

“I’d like to hear from you, and also to know if I could have another Ck.Physical Rdg. very soon, as I might stay here only a few weeks.

“Thankfully and sincerely yours,” [274]

R14. 2/25/41 EC made an appointment for his Ck. Physical 274-15, asking him: “Tell me something of where you have been and your work.”

R15. 2/27/41 Mr. [274] verified his appointment, submitted questions, and said: “Have been since 1938 in Brazil. Sao Paula is the capital of a Southern State of the same name. This is a progressive city of nearly a million and a quarter inhabitants, a great coffee center that has become also an industrial center chosen by General Motors, Goodyear, Firestone, Johnson & Johnson, etc., for their local plants.

“I have been acting as consulting chemist for a Brazilian concern manufacturing soaps, dental cream and cosmetics. But their plant is about seventy miles from the city, and that distance is enough to classify it ‘in the interior’ where skilled labor and modern facilities are yet unknown. So that the Company is contemplating the building of a new plant in Sao Paula proper, and for that reason, has asked me to renew my contract for another two years. I shall do so, most probably, if and when I can get a new passport from Washington where regulations are stricter on naturalized American citizens.

“Naturally, life down there is much different from the New York City rush and merry-(not always, alas!) go-round. The standard of living being very low, there is practically no unemployment. But there is hardly what ‘we’ call a middle class. They have the very poor, the poor, the functionaries, the priests and the rich (who generally are very rich).

“The Brazilian is (in the majority) a mixture of Portuguese, negro and indian blood, and it seems that a slow but definite assimilation is taking place, so that, barring foreign influences, a new sub-race with characters of its own which might develop. Among the foreign elements only the Portuguese and Spanish and Italian have inter-mixed; the German, powerful in the South, has kept to its own; so has the Japanese. British and American interests have had a hard time to compete with Germany, selling at low prices on a barter system, before the war. The people, as a whole, are generally peaceful, liberal, easy-going, likeable - but may be the prey of the so-called ‘stronger’ races. The government with opposite groups is unreliable.

“Demagogy on one hand, and spiritualism of not the better kind on the other, are warping their natural evolution for the time being.

“As for tomorrow, who knows???

“Working and living down there, however, is not an experience devoid of interest, if one can adapt himself and look for the better side, and if one cannot always be helped

• (God helps those that help themselves) one can always help.

“Enclosed ck. of 15, 10 for the rdg. and $5 for the Association. The good work must go on, more than ever. Thankfully and sincerely yours,” [274]

R16. 6/6/42 He requested Ck. Physical 274-17, saying:

“Rec’d your communication of 1/8/42 [asking each member to pray each day a few minutes for divine guidance in world affairs, etc., see under 281-59 Reports] too late to answer it before 2/1/42 deadline, but would like to know the spiritual development for which I am, heart and soul, because I do feel that true Christianity is facing NOW its greatest test. Shall we not only pray, but also LIVE, as the Christ showed us to? We have had so far only alternates of great hopes and deep despairs. Shall man be hu-man?

“Let me know about the work of the Association, remember me to them and believe me, with best wishes, gratefully yours,” [274]

R17. 7/9/42 He wrote: “Am writing the publishers to reserve a few copies of your book,.the reading of which I am anxiously awaiting with great interest THERE IS A RIVER, By Thomas Sugrue, Henry Holt & Co.].”
