This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 31st day of July, 1935, in accordance with request made by the mother - Mrs. [255], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:10 to 11:20 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, N.Y. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [276]; this we have had before.
-
As we find, there is in the present rather a complication of disturbances which have upset the better equilibrium of the body.
-
We find those things pertaining to the assimilations, or causing the assimilations to be disturbed in the manner in which there is the functioning of the glands that make the secretions in the stomach and duodenum.
-
And there is too great a quantity of the disturbing factors between the keeping of the balance in the acid and alkaline; so that rather than the hydrochloric combined with the pepsin forces, there has become the picric which makes for a coagulating and a causing of souring in the system.
-
This makes for the nausea, those tendencies for the activities in the whole system to make for some temperature. For it produces in the gall duct and those assimilating forces in the liver, rather a hardening effect; or as to cause a bloating.
-
The general mental attitude of the body also has much to do with this, making for a disturbance in the coordination of the eliminations through the regular periods in the activities of the body itself, as disturbed with the blood supply.
-
Hence we would find these would be the better applications in the present:
-
First, keep those mental attitudes in a CONSTRUCTIVE way and manner.
-
We would have the manipulative forces in such a manner as to set up the drainages, not only from the activity of the stomach and duodenum (as from the dorsal area, upper dorsal area), but we would also have internally the lactics - or a combination in this manner:
-
Once a day take half a teaspoonful of Milk of Bismuth, with eight to ten drops of Elixir of Lactated Pepsin in same, stirred in a whole glass of water.
-
We would have the enemas to alleviate the colon and the lower portion of the jejunum of those tendencies for the creating of toxic forces that make the temperatures for the body.
-
We would keep in the open as much as possible.
-
In the diet we would have those things that are body and blood and nerve building. This would be as an outline; not that these are the only things to be taken, but the greater portion:
-
Mornings - citrus fruit juices; or the small fruits with cereals (such as berries and the like) - and those tending towards the alkalin reacting, and not milk with these but rather the fruit juices, unless only cereals are taken.
-
Noons - vegetable JUICES, used at the same meal with a cereal that would tend to make for not too GREAT an excess of starch but more of the GLUTEN with same; as the uncut or unpolished rice, or the cracked wheat or rolled whole wheat, or the rye or the oat. Any or all of these COMBINED would be added at the same meal with the vegetable juices, you see.
-
Evenings - a well balance between the green raw vegetables and more of the body-building foods; such as lamb, liver, tripe or the like, that make for the body-building forces.
-
The manipulations we would take in the FIRST about three times each week; or if the temperature does NOT ALLAY from the use of the enemas, we would have the manipulations everyday until this does reduce.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Any local treatment? (A) These as general, as we find.
-
(Q) Any specific advice for the mental body? (A) As indicated, keep more towards the CONSTRUCTIVE forces in its activity. Resentments build only that which is as a banking up, or produce - as it were - those forces that MUST be met by the body-mind. KEEP a constructive force.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/8/35 Mother [255]‘s ltr.: “[276] had an eczema and it was so slow in getting better that I thought we should have a rdg. But for the first time it did not seem to be the help that I had hoped. [276] had no nausea and no fever. I was treating her with salves and olive oil and diet. But what I wanted, too, was the right treatment from the outside. As for any resentment, [276] has been very happy. She and [275] have started a musical kindergarten…”
R2. 8/27/35 EC’s ltr. to Mrs. [255]: “What you say about [276]‘s case is most interesting. I want to follow it up a bit, for it is just as interesting to have one that doesn’t seem to work out as for those that do. Am going to ask Hugh Lynn and Miss Gladys to both write you and we want to ask more questions about this if we may.”
R3. 8/28/35 HLC’s ltr. to Mrs. [255]: “As Dad wrote to you recently, we would like to follow up the rdg. given for [276] on 7/31st. A study of the laws governing the transmission of psychic information through Dad is most important if we are to make the work continually more valuable to those who seek help. If, as you point out, the rdg. missed the real condition and described physical conditions that did not exist there must be some cause. We are most anxious to find the reason for this and if possible remedy the cause of the inaccurate attunement.
“From a copy of the rdg. which is before me I note the internal conditions described. There is little doubt that they could have caused a skin eruption of some kind. As you know from your long experience with the work the readings frequently go direct to the basic cause of a condition and do not deal with symptoms which it is useless to treat. Naturally I believe that this is the case with [276]‘s rdg. There are three points which need definite clarification and upon which we will greatly appreciate your cooperation.
“Nausea is mentioned. Please check back with [276] over the period of her illness even to the beginning or even previous to the actual breaking out of any skin eruption. Poisons must be thrown off from a system. It is quite possible that the first symptoms were nausea and temperature and later developed, after the system adjusted itself, into the symptoms which you mention. The temperature is the second point to consider. This is more difficult to check, for internal temperature may exist without external symptoms. [276]‘s own description of her feelings would best give the index to this, considering please both the period just prior to any breaking out and afterwards. And as the third point is one dealing entirely with a mental attitude it must necessarily be considered from the standpoint of the individual.
“I will appreciate it very much if you will ask [276] to assist in studying this rdg. with a view of obtaining a more thorough understanding without regard for the personal angle. It will be very helpful if both you and [276] wrote us concerning the above three points, stating definitely from your respective angles whether or no the statements are true in the rdg. from a point of time just previous to the actual symptoms you describe and were treating. Upon receipt of your letters we will take another rdg. and ask some questions based on your reports. We will also like to know the condition at present and if the rdg. was followed in any part.
“It is very possible that we may obtain information of considerable value. I have never known of a complete miss in the case of a rdg., though many who did not understand the work and took no time to check back carefully have for a time made such claims as ‘not accurate,’ ‘does not describe symptoms’, etc. Knowing of your thoroughness in such matters and appreciating your understanding of the work, I feel that here we may be able to find something of real value dealing with the influences governing the transmission of the information.
“I know that you will understand and appreciate my position when I say that from my years of study and experience with the rdgs. I would gladly, if necessary, stake my life on the absolute truth of the basic conditions described in any rdg. Therefore, I consider this a wonderful opportunity to understand more of the laws involved in attunement with any individual case. There are times when treatments suggested may not bring the response expected, for the body’s normal reactions must be taken into consideration, but so far as descriptions of conditions go I feel there is little question.
“Both your own and [276]‘s cooperation in checking this with us will be greatly appreciated.
“With kindest regards personally to you all, I am”
Sincerely, [HLC]
R4. 8/30/35 GD’s ltr.:
My dear Mrs. [255]:
Regarding [276]‘s Check Physical, I don’t know what to say. I notice that Hugh Lynn has written you about this, and also Mr. Cayce. I hope you will prepare the questions and help us try to find out just where the trouble lay. When I wrote the reading, I had the feeling that it was a reverting to the same gland disturbance which caused a great deal of trouble to her once before, though perhaps with a different effect - I believe the tonsils were affected, or throat. But glands are such important things, and there are a million different effects noticed at different times when they are not properly balanced. So I feel that the osteopathic treatments to coordinate those functionings are very important, to prevent any future disturbance in perhaps a more serious way. But we can check up on these things in the reading, when we hear from you about it. I do hope that [276]‘s skin is cleared up, and that she is feeling fine.
The Beach is getting a little quiet now, as we’re having some rainy weather and it doesn’t look like we’ll have many people down over Labor Day week-end as usual.
With love to you all, and hoping it won’t be long, before I can see you and talk things over, I am
Always the same, Gladys
R5. 8/30/35 Miss [276]‘s ltr. to HLC: “I will write immediately upon the subject of your letter.
“As to the first point I can only say that I can remember no nausea before or during the eczema. For about 6-7 days I thought it was a mosquito bite and therefore scratched it. In this manner of course, I spread it. I remember several instances before and during my skin eruption which make me positive that my appetite and feeling for food was absolutely normal.
“The second point is temperature. I took my temperature immediately upon receiving the rdg. I had none. It said in the reading (which had been given the afternoon before I received it) that if my temperature did not go down in a few WEEKS I should continue with manipulations, etc. Now, my temperature was normal the day after the rdg. had taken place without manipulations and enemas (and it continued normal).
“The third point: I was sitting on the porch in the sun on the afternoon that the rdg. was being given. I was singing constructive affirmation songs.
“As for resentments, I have such that exist momentarily in the life of every person. But these pass in a moment as the condition that caused them passes immediately. But for a big resentment, I can easily say I have none. I believe that everything in my life is as it should be (except for conditions that are up to ME to change). There is nothing that has happened or exists now which in any way could make me unhappy. Everything I desire I have within me.
“My skin is absolutely normal again, thank you, and I hope this experience will help you.” Love, [276]
R6. 8/30/35 Mother [255]‘s ltr. to HLC:
“When [276]‘s rdg. arrived the skin trouble was already under control, and of course she had had the diet, so I did not send her to Dr. Dobbins [Frank P. Dobbins, D.O.], as she felt fine.
“On Aug. 20th she ran a low temperature, so she went to Dr. Dobbins, but he could find nothing, her spine was fine. We did not realize that it was a cold, which came because she had her bed pushed in front of an open door. And as Dr. Dobbins jokingly remarked, he would have nothing to do in summer if people were too careful with drafts! It took a second treatment and more cold before we realized what the cause was. By the time [276] had her second treatment, I showed the rdg. to Dr. Dobbins, but he could find no swelling, no abnormal condition in gall duct. As I said, [276] has been very happy, but she wrote about this herself. Skin conditions are always an acid condition, so we were very careful in the diet. Dobbins called her condition a case of grippe. After her first treatment on Aug. 20th, she took the Bismuth and Pepsin, of course having temperature only two days. She feels quite herself again.
“But as I want to make plain once more, the rdg. took place when she was gradually getting over her rash on July 31st. The cold started Aug. 20th. In between she was perfectly well. And as she wrote, she had no temperature during the whole time of rash, that is when the rdg. so stressed it. Eczema is important to be treated correctly from outside, so as to prevent its spreading. I had packed the lower calves (where it was) with olive oil during the night and during the day we kept boracic ointment on it. The blisters were quite large, about like a dime. So it was an important external condition, and I think should have been answered in ‘local treatment’ question.
“The whole condition was not important as a case, but I agree with you, it is the right thing to go to the bottom of it. It does not upset me, as I understand the wonderful power and am glad if it just happens to me and no one else. So the dates are important, once more: July 31st rdg. on rash, no temperature or nausea. Aug. 20th the first tr. by Dobbins, Aug. 26th second tr. by Dobbins. Both times temperature from cold, but no nausea. I only mentioned this later condition, so you have all facts. [276] is fine now…
“Dr. Dobbins mentioned the other evening that out of forty- six readings [of people coming to him], only one may have been a little doubtful in its diagnosis. That gave me great pleasure.”
R7. 9/21/35 GD’s ltr. to Mrs. [255]:
“We’ve been rather busy with emergency rdgs. and haven’t gotten to the research rdg. on [276]‘s case. If we don’t get to it before, probably it would be very well to have it up there [when we come to N.Y.] so you could all hear it; or had you rather we get it before - that is, I mean would you have any particular interest in hearing it? I’m anxious to see what this rdg. says, as I don’t remember ever having one just like it before. And to think, of all people, it happened in your family - where the best possible attunement existed! But, as you say, I’m glad it DID happen to you instead of to a stranger.”
R8. 9/29/35 Mrs. [255]‘s ltr. to GD:
“As for [276]‘s research rdg., let us leave it this way. If you have unused time while you are still home, do not hesitate to have it. If you do not mind having it here, I would enjoy hearing it. I just love to listen to any rdg., it always thrills me deeply. I am so glad to hear you are coming to N.Y. and hope you will save a day for me to spend in a heart to heart talk.”
