This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 19th day of May, 1926, in accordance with request made by self - Miss [2842].

1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the Universe, and Universal Forces, giving the conditions that are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth’s plane, giving time, place, and the name, and that in that life which built or retarded the development for the entity, giving the abilities of the present entity and to that which it may attain, and how.

2. EC: Yes, we have the entity here, and the Universal Forces as are latent and manifested in the present earth’s plane.

3. In taking the position in the present earth’s plane, we find one coming under the influence of the cusps, also of Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Uranus; Pisces being, then, in that position of the greater influence, from the astrological viewpoint, which as we see, through the circumstances of the individual, which have been merited through the changes in the earth’s plane, brings a great deal of influence in the life of a peculiar or strange nature, when viewed from the standpoint of the materialist.

4. In the personalities, then, as are exhibited and latent in the present earth’s plane, we find one of a very refined nature, yet one often called dilatory as to personal appearances - not of personality or of person itself, but of personal appearances - not caring, as it were, or apparently seeming not to; yet one very headstrong in decisions, and often making such decisions that are rude by the entity in the passing times.

5. One that is of the studious nature.

6. One that has much appeal for and to occult and mystic forces.

7. One that, with the correct training in self, through will’s force, may acquire much from the mystic and occult forces, especially in the next two years, when and while Uranus is in the ascendency, and one that, through such period, may make very decided and very radical changes in the mode and manner of life, also in the tenets or principles as are found as innate at present - may become manifested in various ways and manners.

8. One that is ever turned toward those conditions that would be ennobling and helpful to others. One, however, that desires to see physical results from such endeavors by self’s own hand, and often sees in others their successes when others themselves do not.

9. One that has, within self’s own ability, those abilities capable of being raised to that position of giving much to others that will be remembered long, long, in the earth’s plane, especially in that way and manner of teaching in the way of service to the young, and especially to those of the adolescent period. One that will find in the present earth’s plane this character, this nature of endeavor, more satisfying, and bringing greater satisfaction to those conditions in self’s mind, mentally and physically, that have not as yet been answered by the manifested forces in the earth’s plane.

10. One who, through the influence of former appearances, finds many contrary-wise urges within, that have often brought self to the point of desiring PHYSICAL destruction of the body.

11. One that will bring to the earth’s forces much in the way of the development in mental forces, will’s force of the entity in the coming two years be guided or led aright.

In one before this we find in that country about Salem, when the peoples were persecuted for the belief in those vibrations called by those people as witchcraft, vision, or ones believing in familiar spirits. The entity then in that of Sally Dale, and the entity lost the life (physical) through the cold caught by dipping, for the entity then one accused of such. In the urge as is seen - that of the entity’s fear EVER to allow self to express fully that felt from within when dealing with such subjects.

14. In the one before this we find in that day of the division of the countries now known as Germany and France, and the entity among those in the frontier countries that saw the destruction of lands through forces attempting to force rule. Then in the name of Rubenhs, and the entity gained in that period, for, with the abilities of the entity, there came the opportunity to give aid to others, which was done by that entity, and through same brought much satisfaction to the inmost being of the entity, or a development of the soul. In the urge as is seen, the entity ever desires to take the part of one persecuted, either for political or religious rights, yet never siding with any that gives only force for the excuse of conquest.

15. In the one before this we find in that of the Grecian country, when the wars were being waged from the isles and from the east. The entity then among those who assisted in the art and sculpture of that day, in the name Pericolecee. In the period the entity developed, for with the period of the oppression there came the development, through the desire to aid those that were unfortunate in their choice of sides, and the entity assisted in that period. The urge as seen is the love of the beautiful in figure, and in art, as pertains to those of the manifested arts, in such as statuary or of Grecian architectural arts.

16. In the one before this we find in that period when the Atlantean forces were at their height. The entity then in that of the temple worship gave the sacrificial offerings for the peoples then worshiped under the rule of that sex, and the entity lost and gained in that period, for, with the destruction of the peoples, the entity lost, in that the desires of the earthly nature. In the name Azzee, and the entity gave much in the first portion of the life through that of the beautifying of the temple service, and the desire in the present for those of beautiful textural garments is seen from this period.

17. In the one before this in the Indian country (now known), in the earlier period of the peoples giving self in worship. From the hills came the entity to the valleys with those who began the agricultural development of that land. In the name then Uzzlld, and the entity lost in that period through self-aggrandizement of the bodily forces as were used in the way of seducing the peoples of that land, in the subduing of the land to the servitude of the entity. In the urge as is seen - the fear of self’s own application to peoples in bodily form or way, and fear of the opposite sex.

18. As to that which the entity may attain in the present sphere, is as given, through service as may be made, especially along the line of teaching in that to the young, and in the way of the development of the mental toward that of mystic and occult forces from within, and, as is seen, the development only comes with service to others, for in losing self in service can gain be made to the higher forces, or to the satisfaction of the spirit and soul.

R1. 5/17/27 [2842]‘s letter:

My dear Mr. Cayce:-

It is just a year ago that you did a Psychic Reading for me. I have never written you, because, at the time, I was in rather a chaos wondering what my “life work” really was.

I am a FIRM believer in your work and have had some beautiful psychic experiences myself. Therefore I am not a skeptic, a doubter - But, after a year’s trial, your psychic reading has not fitted my case - in one particular - Occultly, I have tried to advance and feel the last year has opened vistas for me -

The reading says “One that is ever turned toward those conditions that would be ennobling and helpful to others.” Also that I should go in the path of “teaching in the way of service to the young & especially to those of the adolescent period.” And that I will find that sort of endeavor most satisfying, i.e. “the development ONLY comes with service to others” etc.

Now Mr. Cayce, there is my real problem and one that leaves me wondering “What next?”

All my life I have wanted to help others - About seven years ago, for a period of three years, I worked with adolescent girls from a charity organization, taking them into my home and sincerely trying to help them with their problems for they were so-called “problem-cases.” This was not successful outwardly.

Then for the past four years I have wanted to adopt a child, or take a child so that the mother or mothers could work and keep their children - for I do not believe in separating a good mother from her child. We have had six children and every one of them had been so sexually perverted before they came to us that we could not help them. They were not fit companions for other children and the atmosphere was most depressing.

Is MY mental attitude to blame for this, or is it a warning that children ARE NOT my life work? I love children but -

As the writing says I have a “fear of the opposite sex”; a complex which is not exactly FEAR but a repulsion against having them touch me - I have not been a sexualist, therefore, WHY have I been given these pathetically over sexed children? We have tried EVERY way to cure them, and under the direction of the Psychopathic hospital here - but in EVERY case, though the children loved it here, they chose to go, rather than to TRY to help themselves in sex actions.

My great cry is to know what step to take next -

You see my experience is not in accordance with the reading. I must be to blame somehow - but how?

Failure has marked every attempt to “help” others.

My dear Miss [2842]

Yours of the 17th to hand, and contents noted. We shall be very glad to undertake another reading. I believe - from my experience, and from the general view of what you say as regarding what has been your experience - that you should prepare several questions to have asked at the reading; or better still, Miss [2842] wouldn’t it be better for you to be present, that you might ask the questions as the information is given and presents same to you; for I am sure you must have studied many phases of the phenomena, from what you say your experience has been, and I think that you could be the gainer by being here, seeing the phenomena, and asking questions concerning what is necessary, where the error is

• if any - and how you may correct same. I will be able to get to this about the middle of July, and you could make your arrangements to spend a few days at the Beach about that time, and we will arrange to take it up while you are here. I’m sure you would like to study the phenomena and the results that others have gotten, and are getting, at close range; for, as you say, one may believe, but unless one can apply that which is given them in their individual lives, it doesn’t mean much. Possibly if we could reason together, we could arrive at some conclusion where in life would be more worth while to you from every standpoint. Let me know if you can’t arrange to do this.

R3. 6/13/27 [2842]‘s letter:

My dear Mr. Cayce:-

Thank you very much for your letter of May 31. I greatly appreciate the opportunity you offer me to come and see your work but I regret that material circumstances make it impossible for me to do so. I can only be with you in spirit! It would be a real inspiration to contact those who have benefitted by your readings.

I have put some questions down to be answered. It is difficult to give definite form to my gropings.

It may be interesting to note that, since writing you, a child has come to us who is a real constructive case, the first constructive problem we have had in about seven years.

Am enclosing my questions on a separate sheet.

My dear Mr. Cayce:-

I wrote you May 26/27 regarding a reading and enclosing a check for $5. You answered me May 31st. I sent in my questions June 13th, heard nothing from you and wrote again August 3rd or 4th.

I feel I have waited long enough, so would you please return my check for five dollars and count my name off your lists in the future, for as a good occultist I cannot subscribe to a fixed fee - and a compulsion to “help” your “philanthropies.” Not all have our “philanthropies” - and I can’t withdraw from my own in order to forcibly subscribe to yours - I am not poor enough to ask charity of you, nor am I rich enough to pay the fees you demand. I have told many friends about your work. They, too, are not able to meet the new financial demands.

Fortunately there are many sources through which spiritual truths come through -

I have always found that the greatest truths and best healings come through, where the monetary value set is NOT arbitrary.

R5. 8/13/27 EC’s letter:

My dear Miss [2842]

I have yours of August 9th, and am not surprised that you have lost patience with the seeming negligence in answering your letters. However, I would like to assure you this has not been intentional on my part at all. Circumstances - and the changing about in the shaping of affairs - have prevented me from attending to my correspondence as I should.

I would like to say, Miss [2842] that I have been very much interested in the questions you have asked, and have really been desirous of trying to ferret out some of these questions through these sources - for I feel sure that if some of the things which bother you could be better understood, we would have the answer to many of the questions that are causing many a father and mother to wonder just what the next generation will bring forth. Hence I feel just a little bit disappointed and hurt, that you should take the attitude you have toward the work being incorporated and set a fee being made for information given. I assure you it is not the intention of anyone connected with the Association to keep out those who do not feel able to pay the full amount, nor is it intended to make anyone feel that they are charity patients - but wherever an individual is desirous of USING this channel of obtaining information, we are more than glad for them to contribute according to their means and abilities, and when such contributions have reached our regular yearly membership fee, such persons will be granted all the benefits that may accrue from such membership. I realize that just at the present time our library and lecture courses would mean little or nothing, but within the next twelve to fifteen months we are certainly hoping that these will be worth while, and that the exchange of ideas and ideals between members - also that the data gathered through these channels, that is to be distributed to members - will be very much worth while.

I fully recognize the fact that this is not the only channel though which spiritual information may be obtained - in fact, I feel that it is possibly far less of importance than many others throughout the country - but, when one goes about to establish ways and means of VERIFYING data gathered, it requires the effort and labor of a great many people - and there is not an individual connected with the Association that obtains anything more than a very, very, nominal pay for their service. In fact, no officer of the Association receives one penny - save the secretary and the assistant secretary [EC and GD, of the A.N.I.].

I WOULD be very glad if you would re-consider this, or if I am so ENTIRELY wrong - as you seem to think - please give me your IDEA as to how such an institution - and such an Association - SHOULD be conducted.

Enclosed you will find the check for $5.00 that you asked to be returned to you.

From your letter - and from your question - I had hoped that it would be possible for you to visit our place and see just how the work is conducted. I am told by those who should know that is is entirely different from any they have ever experienced. I do not mean to infer that it is SUPERIOR

• yet the very fact that it is the first that has been considered of sufficient importance to MERIT scientific investigation, and the going to the expense of erecting an institution that it may be scientifically STUDIED, would seem to indicate that is at least worth while.

My dear Mr. Cayce:-

Your letter has made me feel that I still DO want to have a reading from you.

Two thirds of Miss [283]‘s and my life is devoted to the study of the occult and the other third to the keeping up of our little farm in the country - I find that I have to be careful as to whom I apply for psychic help as I do not want to come in contact with insincerity or destructive vibrations.

The mundane aspects of your new circular struck me “cold,” to use a slang expression, but your letter makes me have new confidence. I KNOW that some life work lies ahead of me

• but what it is I cannot fathom yet. The “writings” I get are definitely training me for something - I am being taught cause and effect and am given certain cosmic laws. At times people come to us for “writings,” also, but for me to get writings relative to my personal life, is difficult
• that is why I wanted to apply to you - for I felt a real sincerity in your work - One has to keep to true, and fearless if one is in touch with the higher thought. I belong to no creed or cult.

You see, in reading in your circular that the fee would be 15 for membership and ten dollars for a reading, I felt "shut out" as 25 IS a large sum to me. I KNOW a laborer is worthy of his hire and that in this stage of evolution it IS necessary to make people pay actual money for what they get, yet, I have been fortunate in contacting people who have met their supply thru doing what you have done in the past - my astrologist gives her horoscopes and schedules that way and in consequence is flooded with applicants.

I appreciate your plan is a large & fine one. Verification of such data is needed.

I, however, saw the matter from a purely personal point of view and wondered why I, and many in my circumstances should be cut out from the opportunity of having you give us a reading.

You know, we people of the middle class are sort of “left out” of so much. We are not poor enough, nor do we want to benefit by the charity that is doled out so lavishly these days, nor can we afford the high fees that the rich can pay.

I wish I might visit you and doubly I wish that my friend, Miss [283] could come to you for treatment of her trouble but we cannot afford to do so -

We have both in the past lived in the city and earned good incomes but we craved the quiet & peace of the country, and were willing to give up the material things for a simple living here.

I have given you an outline of my life to show you where I stand and why my attitude was, as it was!

I am, therefore, still anxious to have you answer my questions, if you will and enclose a check for it - I appreciate your saying that one can still contribute what she can. Perhaps I am at fault in not demonstrating “more abundance.” You are allowing me now to pay what I can, now I will do my part and try to demonstrate more. I shall then gladly contribute to your work.

R7. 8/19/27 EC’s letter to [257]: ”…A lady down Boston way wrote us sometime ago for information regarding her own life. We gave her a reading, and she requested another, sending a very nominal sum for same. In the meantime the data - which has been sent out to everyone - was sent her. Immediately she wrote us, demanding that her money be returned, and assuring us that there were other sources from which she could gain just as good information, that did not have such mercenary ideas and ideals back of it. I wrote her just as soon as I had the opportunity, explaining to her the situation, and giving her as completely as I knew how the insight into what had been accomplished, and what the work of the Association and institute would mean - was it once established. This morning we are to take her second reading, and I don’t believe that we have a more sincere believer in the work of the Association than this lady - who a few days ago was lambasting us for everything that might be written in a letter and said by a lady, as well as a few others thrown in. So, if we do not keep the real purpose, and real sincerity and real honesty first and foremost, we need never expect to succeed!

I have just received one of your circulars. Will you please send me two more for friends, as I have given mine away.

Will you give me one of your “Life Readings”? I am particularly anxious to find out the reason for the Saturn-like restrictions placed upon my life, subtle holdings back which keep me from fully expressing and DOING. I have tried to get a child to adopt and to find some helpful life expression apart from the mundane and material. I feel there is SOMETHING for me to DO but cannot find that something. What have I done in a past life that the vital expressions in this life are withheld?

I have brought through some beautiful psychic messages in the past year but none for myself - that apply to my personal life.
