This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 19th day of August, 1927, in accordance with request made by self - Miss [2842].

1. GC: You will have before you the information given in the Life Reading for [2842] on May 19, 1926, and you will answer the questions which I will ask you regarding same.

2. EC: We have the information as transcribed here. This, as we see - while not in the way and manner of being all that might be said respecting this individual entity - was given, and has been given, that the entity - studying and applying same in the present experience in the earth’s plane - might gain the better concept of that which will’s influence plays in the individual development; for, having the urges and the desires placed before self - and the cause of same, through karmic influence - one may apply, will one but take that ensample as was set in Him who made Himself of no estate that He might gain the more. Using, then, this life as an ensample, one may apply - even as this entity may apply - these conditions in the earth’s experience and develop toward that mark of higher calling as is set in Him - for it is not all of life to live, nor all of death to die; for one is the beginning of the other, and in the midst of life one is in the midst of death - in death one begins in that birth into which the earthly application of the inmost intents and desires as applied in respect to will’s forces, that given by the Creative Energy, that one might make self equal with that Energy.

4. (Q) Is it best for me to keep on living the quiet, secluded life that I have, or should I strive to contact other human beings more? (A) Find self first in that quiet secluded manner, contacting others in the way and manner to DEVELOP that as has been given is the manner of the development for self. Learn to apply those lessons in self’s self that are GAINED by the contacts that are made, and the entity learns to apply same in the quiet hours of introspection - for in the lessons given one finds that the soul speaks from within out, and may not be found among the rabble. The entity here finds quiet, and the chance for introspection, and with introspection DO NOT CONDEMN SELF through condemnation on the acts of others. Rather study that impelling force that - applied in the karmic life of the individual brings same to bear; for, as is seen, the law of cause and effect is as the law of time and space - for cause and effect are one, and each creates its own recompense by the application of same, and in the application of any law (which is love - law being love, LOVE being law) the truth, the effect, the cause is seen.

5. (Q) Am I working out my destiny rightly by taking little children into our home? (A) As given, the problem, the development for the entity, may and should - and WILL - be gained in such development; for in this, as given, is the development for the entity, meeting those conditions that were lacking in the development through those experiences in the earth’s plane as given.

That troubles arise, that there is seen the complex that arises from fear within - this fear, this complex, will only be understood by the proper UNDERSTANDING of self. That there is such is the natural development of conditions as were brought in the life, and in life these are met, and those dreads, those fears, are the karmic forces in action.

6. (Q) How can I best draw people of the right vibration to me? (A) By the correct vibration in self. Like begets like. Toned to a tone brings the proper tone from the perfect radiation of such. Each entity RADIATES that tone, that reflection of the concept of its creative force. Each entity each atom of the entity radiates that vibration to which it attunes itself. Each entity contacts, each entity brings that about itself by putting into action laws, those conditions, those individuals, those vibrations that are necessary for its own development. Hence has it oft been given, when thou prayest enter into thine closet, or into thine self, and thine Father that see-eth in secret shall reward thee openly. When thou attunes thine self to those vibrations, those necessary developments of thine own soul, the rewards are as that given - the end of that vibrated, for they are one. And while secularly or materially these may seem far afield, yet even unto the ends of the earth, even unto the beginning and end of time, the vibration, the truth of those forces of the creative energy are one, and - attuned - these bring those of the same attunement, for ALL are of ONE SPIRIT, and the various variations are those creations as sparks are of that which set same in motion, for all are a portion of that first Creative Energy - God.

7. (Q) Please tell me what my karma is, in order that I may strive to overcome it.

(A) Overcome that fear and dread in self. That is the karma. That is that to be conquered in self, for this applies to the entity in its secular, physical, mental, and spiritual body - for, as is seen, when the body physical, mental or spiritual has set self to disregard fear of consequences, so long as that activity was in keeping with the first law of the directed or creative energy, all well! but when applied in the manner of I! the vibration has brought that as of against the stone wall.

8. (Q) Why have I always had more or less of an aversion to the opposite sex? (A) Rather that of the complex, brought on by fear - as has been given - in the various experiences of the entity in and through the earth’s plane. This at times as the entity has felt mentally, and at other times felt inwardly has been detrimental, yet - would that law become the fullness of the truth in the entity - let that prayer be: I will be all things unto all peoples, that I may GAIN the more. NOT in the sense of building in self as one that would live upon the efforts of another, but that - being all things - I may be understood, and may UNDERSTAND the viewpoint, the concept, the impelling force, the reflective angle to which another sees its God.

9. (Q) Have I a right to demand abundance, or should I be content with my small income? (A) Be CONTENT with what thou hast, but never be SATISFIED with what thou hast. Abundance is the lot of him who is in accord with those truths of the Creative Energy, just as the world - the hills, the cattle, the gold - is mine, sayeth the Lord. I will repay, sayeth the Lord. Put thine self in that attitude, that position, of reflecting that as is of the Creative Energy, and that necessary - and over an abundance will be in thine hand.

Dear Miss [2842]

Yours of August 18th received, and I thank you very much for your writing me as you did, and I hope and trust the information - as well as your association with the phenomena, in whatever phase you may contact same - will bear out to you that your judgement in this has been correct.

Now, while the enclosed information is in some respects broad - yet I believe there is sufficient of individual information, that you will be able to apply same in a most satisfactory way and manner.

I fully appreciate your position and your attitude, and I certainly hope that we may be able to be of a great deal of service to you, and to Miss [283]. I’m in hopes that sometime in the near future - when we have things going well here - that you will both be able to make a visit to our place, and see just what we are doing and how it is being done - and I want to assure you both that we shall appreciate any suggestions you have to make that you feel would be for the good of all, for it is my desire - and the intent and purpose of the Association - to at all times serve others!

Thank you very much for your letter and the reading, which I am very much interested in and which will be a great help to me. I feel there is much in it to ponder over - I had not realized that fear was at the bottom of it all - Fear is a very insidious thing and needs to be eliminated -

I am very anxious to get the consent of the grandmother of a little boy [4803] we have here, to have a reading from you - as doctors cannot locate his trouble.

Please pardon my for writing in this manner, but I had such an unusual experience a few evenings ago that I feel I must know just what it is all about.

In a dream or vision I saw and spoke with you and your mother. Please tell me was she a Miss Moore before her marriage? Did she have a brother in the Civil War?

This may be all just enblematical, but I’m constrained to believe there must be some basis of actuality in the experience.

My dear Mr. Cayce:-

Your letter interested me very much. There must be something in that meaning of your dream.

In yours I have been trying to get a trace of my mother. Her name was supposed to be Cora E. Laurence, but of that I am not SURE. My adoptive mother’s maiden name was Jane Douglas Butter and she may have had a brother in the Civil War but am not sure.

On June 9th, I went to an old lady who reads a crystal and when I asked of my mother, she said there was some one who would tell me about her “when the time was ripe.” She saw this person showing me around, also she saw a military man.

This is something in line with what you have written me. I would be deeply appreciative if you could tell me of your vision for it might mean a good deal to me.

My friend, Miss [283] who is a member of your association and I, am constantly being given messages thru me. We are doing this just for ourselves, the subject matter being mostly the cosmic laws, karma etc. I am quite unable to receive anything relative to the mundane of which I am very much interested. In fact the psychic, the under currents on over-currents of life always hold my deepest attention. It is only thru them that we can grow in understanding.

In 1926 you gave me a Psychic reading regarding former incarnations which has been very helpful and instructive, and quite true - In this incarnation seem to have re-lined in short periods those other incarnations you told me of.

I should like to have another Psychic reading by you, but frankly, do not know what to ask for. I seem to have come to the end of a long cycle of living and life ahead seems all a new beginning - so, like the baby, newly reborn, I have no questions - only wonder as to what I must next do and be. Perhaps you can tell me how to word this vague questioning in order that you can answer in a Psychic reading.

My dear Miss [2842]

I was indeed most happy to have yours of the 27th, and all you say about the crystal reader, the circumstances surrounding the knowledge of your mother, is quite interesting to me. I certainly trust that I may be of some aid in obtaining information that may not only be satisfying but conclusive evidence to you of this, that seems to me to be an attempt on the part of your mother to talk with you at this time when, as you express it, you seem to have come to an end of a long cycle of living.

So, I will be most happy to undertake a reading for you. From our experience I presume that possibly the mental and spiritual suggestion for the approach would offer the best and clearest opportunity for information to be given that might prove the most helpful at this time. Such a suggestion would also allow any questions that might present themselves to you; and I believe this would be the proper course to pursue.

Also I am quite interested in the data you and Miss [283] get. I hope this is not presuming, but I would like to ask that you pass some of it on to me, if - or when - you feel it would be right to pass it on to someone else.

It is quite gratifying in some ways to know that your experiences in the present, even for short periods, verify the appearances in the earth’s environs mentioned in your reading some years ago. The reports that we have been having recently, from individuals throughout the country, have been very much in keeping with yours. Practically all declare that the Life Readings have proven not only helpful and enlightening, but quite true - where they have taken the time to draw anything like a parallel of the present experiences with the information given. Of course, we recognize that the only way we become conscious in the material of anything is by drawing comparisons. To be sure, such reports convince all of us, so closely associated with the work here, that there is much more to be obtained from the Life Readings than most of us have even dreamed.

Now, regarding the vision I had Wednesday morning, the 21st of June: through the years I have had quite a number of experiences where dreams or visions, of quite different characters, have been presented. A number we have seen work out literally, while others we have found to be only emblematical. This vision seemed so out of the ordinary that my secretary, Miss Gladys Davis, was quite anxious that I get a reading and find out just what it meant; and I think she was quite “put out” because I didn’t, even before writing to you. But, as I told her, I had no idea or couldn’t think why you should be in the visions, or any of those associated with you. Of course, we had no idea there was any question in your mind as to your mother’s maiden name; but to find this true makes us very anxious to try and be of a service in getting some information that may be very valuable to you, if it is within our privileges to try.

So, after you have read this, should there be any question you feel we might ask in the reading for you, following the suggestion for the approach that I mentioned above, be sure and make note of them; because I feel very truly that only real seekers may get information that is of actual value. This is the vision:

I seemed to be surrounded with soldiers. At first it appeared that I was of the soldiery myself, yet I was trying to escape from that environment. Apparently, the battle of Lookout Mountain was in progress. In attempting to escape, I realized - from the bodies of soldiers in both the Federal and Confederate armies being so close to each other

• that had either of these armies been aware of the situation, there would have been much difference in the outcome of the war. Finally, I escaped from that particular engagement and was in the vicinity of Shiloh (where the battle was fought, though I do not remember the geography of the place). There I found many ladies, and I met my secretary - she asked if I had seen Miss [2842] and insisted that I must meet her. As we went to the portion of the place where the ladies were, I realized that Miss Gladys was not as she is today but was as she was during that period (though this was not one of the periods mentioned in her own Life Reading). When we reached the camp, I found that it was not you at all - but your mother, who told me that you were to be born to her, that your name would be [2842] and that her name was Doris Moore, that her brother had just been killed at Shiloh and was to be interred there, as they would not be able to return his body to his home.

Of course, it seems that many things might have been cleared up more, but whether it means anything or not - I don’t know. Possibly your questions will enable us to get something.

Yesterday afternoon, as I was giving a reading [368-1] for a man whole first name is Stonewall Jackson (which might have been the cue), I had a vision in which I again saw your mother. This time, I remember, I had a very good description of her, and if I were an artist I could paint a picture of her. Her face was oval, she had dark hair and eyes, a good deal of color, a great deal of animation in her face, and a most abundant suit of hair. She assured me that her name was DORIS MOORE, and that she was [2842]‘s mother.

I do not know what to make of it all, but it is at least interesting, and we want to approach all those experiences with judgement and the right sort of thinking. We all recognize, I’m sure, that there are many consciousnesses that we as individuals comprehend very little. As to whether we are so influenced by something outside of ourselves as to be at all times cable of getting the proper interpretation of that presented, may be a question. However, I hope that you will find this of interest, and that I haven’t troubled you with too long a letter at this time.

Be sure to let us hear from you, and if you decide you want the reading we will be glad to make the arrangements for a time; for, of course, it will be necessary for us to know just where you will be during the time of such an appointment.

R8. 9/29/60 Letter from Miss [283]: “Miss [2842] is living in N.H. with a friend pursuing her interests in animals; has dogs and goats. I do not hear from her but know she seems to be well and contented as reported by mutual friends.”
