This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 25th day of March, 1933, in accordance with request made by her husband, Mr. [2056], through Mr. [257] - Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis and L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 11:25 to 11:45 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, N.Y. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [298]; this we have had before.
-
Now, as we find, the physical conditions show considerable improvement from that as we have had here before. While there are still those reactions in the muscular and tendon forces of the extremities, especially in the limbs (right limb), these - as we see - are effects of the poisons from poor elimination and toxic forces; as well as that affecting the circulation in the lymph, lower portion of digestion, and the pressures are in such a way and manner as to affect directly the circulation as related to the nerve impulses to the locomotaries - and their tributary to the extremities, especially.
-
Then, there needs to be applied with those manipulative and corrective measures certain conditions or elements that will aid in ELIMINATING the poisons from the system.
-
We also find that these poisons, with their reactions to the cerebro-spinal and sympathetic system, make for those conditions in the mental activity; in that the temperamental conditions become magnified in the physical forces of the body. These also must be taken into consideration.
-
Then, in meeting the needs, as we find in the present, we would continue - to be sure - the manipulations and corrective forces in the cerebro-spinal system.
-
We would discontinue not altogether, but the often reaction, the rub which contains the stimuli for the superficial circulation. We would give this now about once to three times each week, or twice a week for the present - unless the conditions return which make those tendencies for the too sudden reaction to brain. Say Thursdays and Tuesday, see?
-
When there are those contractions - as under knee, in ankle, in foot, we would apply to those portions so contracted, as well as to those centers from which that portion of the muscular forces receive their impulse in the cerebro-spinal system (which will be across the lumbar region), a saturated solution of Epsom Salts. (When the pains are severe, it would be well that the portions so affected be massaged or painted with that which will act as an opiate to the system, see?) This will make for the relaxing quickly of any congested portions, but there must be the manipulations and corrections - especially while there is the inability of a great deal of activity by the body; though, whenever the body desires to be out or to be moved about, or to be carried for rides or the like, it should be kept out as much as is well for the general condition; that is, change of scene, change of environ, change of surroundings will be well for the body, as this creates not only the quieting of the general nervous system but gives the body other things to think of than self and self’s condition. See?
-
For the eliminations we would use high enemas, or colonic irrigations occasionally. In the first three quarts or gallon of water we would use a tablespoonful of plain salt and two tablespoonsful of baking soda, as an intestinal antiseptic and cleanser. In the last waters (which would be used for rinsing the colon) we would use, in the gallon and a half of water as much as two tablespoonsful of Glyco-Thymoline - as an intestinal antiseptic that will reduce inflammation and prevent acid forming, and will CLEANSE the system. These we would give at least twice a week until three or four have been given, see?
-
Be mindful that the diet (which has been outlined) is wholesome and well-balanced, that it is tended towards the alkalin rather than the acid forming.
-
As indicated by the body’s desire for food, or the requirements of same, there are elements lacking in system; but with the cleansing of the system first (that is, the colon, especially), and those tendencies for the food reactions to be alkalin, we would soon adjust the general conditions for the body.
-
Now: The rubs twice a week. We would change the other periods to the saturated solution of Epsom Salts packs, for the contraction in the muscular forces, directly to the portions affected; also to the centers from which those portions of the body receive their impulse. As it comes at times in the calf of the leg, under the knee, we would apply these packs there and also to the lumbar and sacral area (in the spine) from which those portions of the limbs receive their impulse. See? Then we would cleanse the system with the high enemas, using those antiseptics and washes that have been indicated; using the food values in the ratio or manner outlined.
-
As we find, with these followed in this direction, the conditions should continue to be on the improve.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What will relieve the tenderness of the skin on the back? (A) Olive oil and tincture of myrrh. Heat the oil to add the myrrh, equal parts. Just GENTLY massage this; do not rub.
-
(Q) Any advice as to how often, or regarding, the osteopathic treatments? (A) These would be according to the needs of the body. The general treatment will be found in the present, except the adjustments in the lumbar and sacral area, to be more in the cervical and upper dorsal than other portions of the body, to keep a normal equilibrium of the blood and nerve energies from the central nervous system.
-
(Q) Would a change of location for the body be advisable? If so, where? (A) After there have been some better conditions for the body, where it is not so severe in the change of the atmospheric pressures; or to a dryer, more sandy or sunshine, would be well for the body.
-
(Q) Would a change of nurses be advisable? (A) The nurse is very good in the present conditions; just needs a little more patience, a little more persistence.
-
(Q) What is condition of heart at present? (A) This is very good, considering the general reactions throughout the system.
-
(Q) The blood supply? (A) As indicated, there are poisons being carried in the blood system; hence the cleansing that we have advised.
-
(Q) Has treatment taken any effect to prevent another stroke? (A) We have outlined the conditions, as to what is occuring! Follow these along the lines as we have given!
-
(Q) Is it advisable to show patient the reading? (A) Advisable that there be the sympathetic reaction with same. Hence it would be well to be explained to the patient.
-
(Q) Should Mr. [257] visit her and explain parts of reading? (A) If she desires that he should!
-
(Q) Please advise husband, [2056], as to what he can further do to help body recover. (A) Carry on with those ways in which there is kept for the body and its surroundings the best mental and physical attitudes about the body.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 4/3/33 Husband wrote: “She is slightly improved. She had a couple of bad days last week (Tues. and Wed.), but seems much better now. Last Wed. she got out of bed, when the nurse was out of the room, walked a few steps and then fell. In falling she struck her eye, so that she had a beautiful shiner. Hasn’t had the cramps lately but I’ve gotten the things ready for the first time when they’re needed.”
R2. 4/20/33 Husband [2056]‘s letter:
“This is just a short note in the line as a report. Mrs. [298] has been getting on very nicely. Her physical condition has been to all appearances improving. She walks a little, with help of course, is able to get out when it is pleasant and is taken for rides whether pleasant or not. Her mental condition, however, doesn’t change. In fact, I would say it is slowly receding. I know the nurse feels the same as I do about that. It is plainly evident that there is a gradual weakening of the mind. Before, she used to know that she wasn’t saying what she meant to say, but now she’ll say the wrong thing and yet won’t realize it. For the past few days she has been very tired and passive, almost too passive, for her.
“Ten days ago she had one additional very slight stroke, about four weeks after the last one. This was on Monday night but as I was working late the nurse didn’t tell me until the next morning. The next day she was o.k., but weak; and the following day was fine. Her physical condition seemed considerably improved, if anything, but her mind was more cloudy. Up until Sunday she seemed to be well on the road to recovery, but during these last few days she just seems to be getting weaker and weaker. And it is hard to awaken her interest in anything.
“For some time she refused to let us apply the rub, but the other evening I read your letters to her and the last reading and she consented to let me apply the lotion again. I massaged her back the next morning with the myrrh and oil and she had no bad effects at all. So, tomorrow night I’ll use it again.
“She has had no more of those severe cramps. We really haven’t had occasion to use the Salts packs, but the nurse has used them in her bath. The nurse says the colitis condition has practically disappeared. Certainly the bladder condition has, for she only voids now once or twice a night.
“I do hope and pray that she may be spared, but if she can’t get well, or if her mind is going to be permanently affected, I certainly wouldn’t want her to linger on. God’s will is best, and His way be done.
“Am feeling a little blue tonight, I guess.
“Best regards to Mrs. Cayce and to yourself. With love,” [2056]
R3. 4/26/33 EC’s letter:
My dear Mr. [2056]:
“I was indeed very glad to have yours of the 20th, and I want to thank you very much for the enclosure. I know just how such conditions have brought about a great deal of expense to you, and must of necessity continue to do so. And I appreciate your helping us along at this time also, for - of course - we depend solely, for our daily needs, upon the contributions we receive from those we try to aid.
“I’m glad that Mrs. [298] is showing some improvement, physically, at least. I’m sure it is quite a disappointment to you, and must cause a great deal of anxiety, to feel that she is possibly not gaining mentally; but rather seeming to go backward. Of course, we recognize that such conditions do affect the mental associations of a body. I believe that possibly a reading might be of help to you in this direction also. If you desire that we include this condition in a check reading, and ask specific questions regarding it, we would be very glad to undertake it. Perhaps I mentioned to you sometime ago that one of the most satisfactory experiences we ever had with the information through the readings was on just such a case - a man, however; one who had been the master in a boys’ school for quite a number of years [?]. He had his first stroke, his second also. After the second, his mind began to fail. The general medical fraternity, of course, said there was no hope, and that the third would carry him away. This was in the early days of the readings; in fact, it has been thirty years ago. The family then decided to at least try out a reading. Of course, check readings followed, sometimes one weekly and then again every month or so; but by the end of nine months he came back; and was able to carry on that school for more than eight years, and did as wonderful work as he ever did during his whole experience as an instructor. We have had several other cases this same way.
“You know, this sounds very much like I’m trying to boost the Work to you. I’m merely telling you of these things, and - of course - you have to decide for yourself. I know that you have had the opinion from many individuals, and from those who are supposed to know - and who are possibly with the body quite often; but we want to be of help if we can. We are not trying to horn in, nor to offer you something other than that you can take at its face value, or at whatever you feel it to be worth.
“Thanking you for your letter, and trusting that we may be of some service, I am”
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce

R4. 5/2/33 Husband [2056]‘s ltr.:
“Had quite a long talk with [257] yesterday. I was telling him that Mrs. [298] had become dissatisfied with the nurse we have and that I had suggested to her that she go to a sanitarium. The idea had apparently appealed to her and I was inquiring through the doctor and my brother as to a likely place. [257] and I, while discussing the matter, seemed to have the same idea. Why wouldn’t Virginia Beach be a good idea? I was to write you and suggest the plan to you for your approval, etc.
“Unfortunately when I came home last evening Mrs. [298] had just had another stroke. This one was a little more severe than the previous ones of April 10th & March 13th.
“The nurse says she was exceptionally bright and happy yesterday. Evidently her only reason for consenting to go away to a sanitarium was that I might have a rest. The thought of her going away undoubtedly upset her. I don’t say that was the cause of the shock, but it must have been one of the contributing causes. I guess the only thing to do is to plan to spend the summer right here at home (and forget the expense).
“She had been responding very nicely to the treatments. I had given her a rub with the gasoline mixture Sunday night and yesterday morning applied the oil to take away any soreness there might be. Just as I always did.
“I really don’t know what to say. There doesn’t seem to be anything to do. These spells may have some connection with her menstrual periods, as they coincide with them. Of course she has been having change of life for the past year or so. The M.D. seemed to think there was that connection.
“Seems a shame to burden you with my troubles, when you have plenty of your own, no doubt. Will keep you advised as to any changes.”
R5. 5/21/33 Husband [2056] submitted questions, including: “If possible for body to make a recovery, what can be done to assist this recovery? What should be done to ease the suffering? Would it be advisable to change nurses? If so, is there any special one to get? “She has been rather better these past two days. Just what it portends I do not know. Generally it means another attack. I’m hoping not this time, however…
“I want to thank you for your many kindnesses in the past and to assure you of my support.”
R6. 5/25/33 EC gave her Ck. Rdg. 298-3.
Background
Background
B1. 3/14/33 Husband [2056] obtained 298-1 for her, for after effects of stroke first of Dec.
B2. 3/20/33 Husband submitted questions: “We have applied the liniment faithfully as given in 298-1. Last night we omitted it to give the skin on the back a chance to sort of rest up.
It was beginning to be rather painful… She has been very depressed. Yesterday in desperation the nurse agreed to take her for an auto ride and for the rest of the day she was as happy as a clam in high water. Had a restful night and was in good spirits when I left for work this a.m. We find she is very difficult to handle at times and only give in to her to prevent more serious trouble from the hysterical state into which she works herself.”
