This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 14th day of June, 1943, in accordance with request made by the father - […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mrs. [1158].

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3049].

3. As we find, in considering the disturbances here, more than the mere pathological conditions that appear must be taken into consideration - if there would be accomplished benefits of any material nature.

4. The incoordination that exists in the general physical forces of the body, also those activities between the sympathetic and the central nervous systems, and the voluntary and involuntary nerve forces, indicate the real existence of those spheres so often mentioned through this channel, - of body, mind and soul, and their relationships one to the other.

5. They are one, if they are coordinant, they are recognized as being separate when - as here - they do not coordinate.

6. Thus the inability of the body to control itself in body movements; and there is only partial coordination when the activity finds expression from the soul, and from the mind, and from the body.

7. The more perfect understanding might be obtained through the life existences of the entity in the earth, but these also are dependent upon the individual entities who are responsible for the entrance of this soul into the earth.

8. Thus, in making suggestions for pathological, psychological, psychopathic reactions, all of these factors must be taken into consideration.

9. The inability of the activity of the vocal cords, the inability of controlling the vision, the inability of controlling speech of any kind, ALL have their deeper meaning in the GENERAL conditions of the body.

10. Not that these are lacking, but they need expression; thus the addition physically of those elements that will produce a physical activity through the low vibrations that constitute life giving forces themselves. But these also must needs be directed in the body forces, and this direction may only be accomplished through the proper channel - in those that are responsible for the physical conditions of the body in the present.

11. These additions physically, then, will be beneficial, as we find, but it depends upon the consistency with which these applications may be made as to the effect and the results that may be accomplished with this body:

12. First, then - prepare for the body the Wet Cell Appliance, the low electrical vibration; to carry into the body, vibratorially, those elements that may work with the replenishing of the basic nerve forces of the body itself; as to their ability to coordinate in the body will depend upon the direction these are given by the father and the mother in unison - not one, but together. This would be done as the body loses its own physical consciousness in sleep, by the direction of the subconscious or superconscious - or both - by the suggestion on the part of the parents.

13. The Wet Cell Appliance would carry alternately the Chloride of Gold and Spirits of Camphor; one day using the Gold Solution (in the proportions of one grain Chloride of Gold to each ounce of distilled water - and use at least three ounces in the Appliance), and the next day Spirits of Camphor (commercial strength).

14. Attach the Appliance each day for thirty minutes.

15. When using the Gold Solution, the large nickel plate, through which the Gold Solution passes vibratorially, would be attached to the umbilical plexus; while the small copper plate would be attached at the 9th dorsal plexus.

16. The next day, when using the Spirits of Camphor, attach the large plate also to the umbilical plexus and lacteal duct area; and the small copper plate to the first of the coccyx centers, or the brush end - or the very end of the spinal cord itself.

17. Keep alternating these attachments each day, in the above manner.

18. Use the regular solution for charging the appliance, to make the low appliance - or low vibration.

19. Each day following the use of the Appliance, give the body a gentle massage with Cocoa Butter along the whole length of the spine; especially in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cervical, the 6th dorsal, the 9th dorsal, the lumbar axis, and the end of the spine.

20. Then, each evening, as the body loses consciousnesses, let these be as the means, as the channel of directing that which has been accomplished in the body centers of the nerve forces. Begin with this, - then the rest should be according to that desired by the father and the mother:

21. LORD! OUR GOD! MAKE US TO SEE THAT, THAT WHICH WE CANNOT CHANGE SAVE IN THEE, IS RIGHT! THAT WHICH WE CAN CHANGE, HELP US O LORD TO DO SO - IN THY NAME!

22. And know and see the difference.

23. Then would follow that direction - in the words and suggestions by the parents, you see - one day as to the speech, another day as to the control of the locomotories, another as to the control of the eyes, the coordinating of brain with same, and so on.

24. But this should be done systematically, EXPECTANTLY; not doubting.

25. For what ye ask in His name, believing, and thyself living, ye have already.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

On June fourteenth you gave our daughter, [3049] a reading, and we have endeavored to follow your instructions, since that time, most meticulously.

There has been some improvement - quite noticeable, but slow (or so it seems to us). And now, we feel, the time has come when a check reading would be very helpful.

For one thing, we want especially to know whether or not we have been following your instructions correctly. For another, we would like to know whether or not you have any additional instructions - or different ones. And we have several questions that we would like, if possible, to have answered.

First, she seems, at times, to be making an effort to speak, and on two or three occasions we have actually heard her voice, though she has used no words. Can you give us any explanation of what is happening, or any word of encouragement?

Second, she frequently shakes herself violently, though not involuntarily. Is this merely an energetic outburst, or has it some emotional connotation?

Why is she so easily startled - even by perfectly familiar sounds if they come quickly and unexpectedly?

Since her illness last winter her throat is frequently rough, and she coughs more or less. Is there any chronic disability there?

Is there any way in which we can be instructed so as to fit her better with glasses?

Dear Mr. Cayce:

In your letter of October 6, 1943, which set February 1, from 10:30 to 11:30 A.M., for a check reading for our daughter, [3049], you suggested that we send you a list of questions, and let you know the exact address at which she will be at the time appointed.

Mrs. […] and I plan to be with her at our home, which is at …, New York. And the questions to which we hope answers may be given, listed in approximately our idea of their importance, are as follows:

1. Have we been following your instructions properly?

2. Is she taking the proper gland medication?

3. How can we get proper lenses for her?

4. Is her hip out of place? If so, what can be done to correct it?

5. Is there any chronic trouble in her throat? If so, what can be done to remedy it?

6. How far is her unclear vision affecting her mental processes and coordination?

7. Is she overcoming her innate fear? How can we help her in that regard.

8. Why is she not talking, and what can be done to teach her to use her voice?

With these questions, I am enclosing a case history that has been prepared with some care by Mrs. […]. Both of us hope that we are giving you the information that you require, and we are looking forward eagerly and optimistically to your report.

CASE HISTORY OF [3049] Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. […]

[3049] was born August 14, 1931.

In early infancy she was discovered to have a “low thyroid” condition. At about two months she was started on 1/10 grain of thyroid daily - before she was one year old she was taking 1/4 grain thyroid daily.

At the age of one year she was placed under the supervision of a gland specialist, who continued her thyroid medication, added parathyroid for a period of one or two years, and added pituitary medication. She worked up to 1 grain of thyroid a day, although for about 3 years now she has been taking only 1/2 grain daily. She worked up to 6 grains of anterior lobe pituitary plus 2 grains of full pituitary per day and has been taking that amount for four or five years.

At one month of age we discovered she had congenital cataracts in both eyes, and was blind to everything but light. The constant moving of her eyes and her blinking at a strong light suggested vision obstructed by cataracts, and not total blindness. She was placed in the hands of eminent eye doctors.

At 10 months of age she had the first of a series of “needling” operations under the direction of the late Dr. Wheeler of the N.Y. Medical Center and by a method developed by him. The first operation was on only one eye, the one that had the densest cataract. At 12 months a second “needling” operation was performed - this time on both eyes. At about 2 1/2 years of age she had the final operation - the slitting open of the lenses to allow for sight.

Before her final eye operation she had begun to talk, using a few words such as “Daddy”, and “Hello.” The sudden elimination of the “curtain” against her vision was a serious psychological shock to her. Things seemed almost to come up and hit her in - to her - a most frightening manner. The first week after her return from the hospital she screamed and pawed the air. Then she taught herself to turn away from anything that came close to her, and finally she taught herself not to look. And she stopped talking.

At four years of age she was operated on for the removal of tonsils and adenoids - her fourth experience under ether.

At the age of one she turned over in bed for the first time, by herself.

At the age of three she took her first steps, but did not walk alone until she was four. Even yet she is almost stubbornly hesitant on unfamiliar ground.

Inasmuch as her lenses were necessarily destroyed by the cataract operations, experiment with glasses began. Her first glasses were put on her at the age of 16 months, and since that time at least 7 or 8 different lenses have been tried with her, in an effort to give her clear vision. Fitting of the glasses was always guess work and the “guess” was made by watching her re-actions, noticing at what distance she reached for certain things, et cetera. When she was about 5 years old she began to be more interested in looking, although it has been an exceedingly slow and difficult process to teach her to LOOK. She was influenced for the most part of her other senses, especially hearing and touch, and only within the last two years has she become really interested in looking and investigating.

At the age of 5 and 6 years she attended a private nursery school which was attended by about 20 normal, active children. She could not enter their activities but she enjoyed it on the sidelines - the teacher told us the children understood her and she them, and they did things to help her until she learned not only to expect their help but to “ask” for it in her silent manner, which they seemed to understand. During that experience of school attendance

• two years - she seemed stimulated and unusually active.

She was then home for three years - with home training - and one of those years a teacher from the public schools come in regularly. She responded quite well, to the training.

When she was about 5 or 6 years old she began picking up a few words again, mimicking not only favorite household words, but the mannerism and inflection of the ones who used them most. She always spoke CLEARLY whenever she spoke - no thickness in her voice. “Oh dear, oh dear,” - “well, well”

• “terrible” - “yes” - “mama” - and on two occasions (at about 9 years of age) she used sentences. On one occasion she said distinctly to me, while reaching out and touching my dress, “Hmm - I like this dress.” (The dress had large, bright flowers on it.) On another occasion, at lunch time, I said to her “Are you hungry?” Her immediate reply was “I should say so.”

Over the years she has made her wants so clearly understood that she has not found it necessary to talk - we have tried various ways of making her do so but the habit of silence has been more accentuated the past three years than formerly

• until recently.

At the age of eleven she was sent to boarding school for handicapped children. She was there only one month, for she became critically ill with a serious throat infection, due to severe auto-intoxication resulting from a dangerous neglect of her physical habits. She was taken to the hospital for special and drastic treatment, partially recovered, and then had bronchial pneumonia, followed two months later by laryngitis. She has been under home supervision ever since.

In the spring of 1943 (at 11 1/2) years of age) she was placed in the hands of a competent physician and child specialist of high reputation who is now supervising her care, and who is in understanding sympathy with Mr. Cayce’s work. He has called in, to assist him, an experienced and unusually able spiritual psychologist under whose direction [3049] has responded to a marked degree.

Treatments according to Mr. Cayce’s instructions began the first week of July, 1943. An immediate re-action was noticed. All her life, previous to the wet cell appliance treatments, it had been necessary to give her mineral oil, or suppositories, or both, every day. Within five days of the time we started the treatments it became unnecessary to use any such regular aid to her elimination, although she occasionally needs a little such help.

Some weeks thereafter she began to have great bursts of undirected energy. She threw her arms in happy excitement, kicked her legs rapidly, and “shimmied” almost violently all over. She still has these bursts of energy although they seem to be becoming more directed.

Her mind seems so busy - she has always been happy and is increasingly so. She has always appeared to have a sort of “sixth” sense of understanding - for instance, she knows when anyone she loves is troubled, and so keeps very close to them and shows an unusual amount of affection at that time, or, if I, for instance, am unusually busy she seems to know she is “helping” me by entertaining herself contentedly the while and making no demands whatsoever on my attention until I am through. She seems always to absorb whatever atmosphere surrounds her with a complete understanding. She also understands everything SAID to her and re-acts accordingly. She is amenable, considerate, impartial, has a sense of humor, enjoys playing a joke, in her odd way. She loves companionship, she loves accomplishment. She has never been ugly in disposition, although she is determined and has a mind of her own. She tries hard to have her own way but if she finds it impossible she accepts the inevitable gracefully and turns to other interests.

She has always been passionately fond of music - good music

• and she loves to be read to. She enjoys playing ball. She loves to swing, and to rock. She has never used her hands much - to hold things - until the last few years. Now she will not only hold things, but carry them, and do slight errands, on request. She is very easily startled.

Recently she has been finding her voice and though she has not spoken any words for the last year or two (with about two or three exceptions) she is now beginning to make definite sounds, some whispers and some loud, full-voice sounds. She gets very excited about it. Also she frequently experiments with shaping her lips as if to speak and on several occasions we have thought she was about to speak to us, then suddenly she would relax her efforts. She seems to be inhibited psychologically. We use praise and sympathy, and try to use it wisely, though it is difficult to know the wise course. We try to follow our impulses and intuitions.

She matured at the age of 12 years and 3 months (November 1943) and since that time her development has seemed more rapid and more marked. Something seems to be developing within her - it may not be as obvious to the casual observer

• but her co-ordination in every way seems to be definitely better. She walks better, feeds herself better, is more active, has more self-assurance, more definite desires, a better understanding of things in general. She seems to be of a more investigatory state of mind, and frequently looks intently and interestedly at people and things, apparently thinking about what she sees, though her vision still appears, as we notice her re-actions toward everything in general, to be very unclear.

She gives us the feeling that she is soon to break whatever bonds are holding her, and come forth her natural self.

B1. 3/19/43 Letter from Mrs. [1158] to EC: ”…Yesterday, I visited a friend of mine over in … Her husband is a doctor (M.D.) but both of them are truth students and believe in Jesus and the Bible. He has as a patient a child of 11 yrs. old, who does not talk. She hangs her head and her tongue sort of hangs out, and yet her physical development is normal for age, and physically she seems well. She has never gone to school, but intermittently at long intervals she talks. Three months ago she said to her mother one morning when she first saw her ‘That is a pretty dress you have on.’ The parents of this child called in my friend’s husband Dr. Specht, and he saw nothing he could do and he called in a Truth Student to see what she could do (thru her knowledge of the oneness of God and the all power of God). So, she called upon the parents and the child yesterday afternoon. The child said nothing to her but nestled up to her and clung to her. The Truth Student, kept inwardly calling for the child to ‘lift up her eyes’, and before she left the child had raised her head and looked straight into the eyes of the Truth Student and today the Mother reports she has several times lifted her head.

“The Father and the Grandmother have both had visions that the child will be healed. The Mother is weighted with grief and fear, but hopes the Truth Student can release in the child the truth of God in her. After the visit of the Truth Student to the child she called at Mrs. Specht’s home, at the time I was calling. We three held a meditation for the child, in which the truth student declared the child’s perfection in God, NOW.

“After the meditation was over I told them of the works you have been doing to bring healing and blessings to many and of There Is A River. Both ladies were at once interested, and wanted a Reading for the child. Mrs. Specht wanted me to first tell the Mother and interest her to send for the reading, but the Truth Student wanted Dr. Specht or me to send for the reading, without the parents knowing about it, as she thought a better Reading would be brought forth if she, Mrs. Specht and I, kept the Reading time for meditation without any doubting or unbelieving mind knowing about it. In fact, the Truth Student wanted me to send for a Reading at once without even Dr. Specht knowing about it. This I said I could not do. However, I told Mrs. Specht I would give her my copy of There Is A River so that Dr. Specht could have it to read over the weekend, and after reading it, he could decide what he thought about getting a reading for the child.

“In the meantime, I told the Truth Student (she is really a Truth teacher) that I would write to you and ask if you felt it would be O.K. to give a Reading without the parents knowing about it, provided the Dr. (Dr. Specht) who is handling the case, would like it. She feels she should get a Reading quickly. Dr. Specht’s address is: …

“By the time you receive this and get an answer back to me, or to Dr. Specht it will be nearly a week at the best. So, if when you read this you feel impressed that a time should be set for the child’s Reading, please set it and tell either me or Dr. Specht when you have set it for. Also, send the necessary papers to be signed by Dr. Specht, or me, or both, and tell whether or not you feel we should tell the parents and have them, instead of us, get it.

“I am expecting to talk with Dr. Specht on Sat. night or Sunday, and he may agree with me that it would be well to tell the parents first. However, he may think otherwise - so, we will appreciate hearing from you concerning all of this at your earliest convenience.

“The Truth Teacher seemed very much interested in what I told her about you, and she says there is no doubt in her mind but that the information thru you is from God, the All-knowing One Universal Mind…”

B2. 3/20/43 EC wrote asking that by all means the request should come from the parents; he would not undertake the reading otherwise.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

At the suggestion of Mrs. [1158] of …, New York, I am writing in order to ask you if it will be possible for you to reserve a time for a reading concerning our twelve year old daughter, [3049]. Mrs. [1158] has told us that she has asked you for the necessary blanks to be filled out, and we shall fill them out as soon as we have received them.

In the meantime, it occurred to us not only that it would be well if a reading could be had at the earliest time consistent with your other commitments, but that you should know that [3049]‘s physician - Dr. William H. Specht, M.D. of …, N.Y. - is himself looking forward to receiving the report of the reading.

Just how much Mrs. […] has told you of [3049] we do not know, but we understand that she has mentioned her to you.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

In response to the suggestion contained in your last letter, Mrs. […] and I are enclosing a list of questions that we would especially like to have answered at the time set for the reading for our daughter, [3049].

1. Whenever my treatment is advised for any of her difficulties, will you please state specifically where we can find the necessary help and cooperation?

2. What is affecting [3049]‘s coordination?

3. Why does she not talk, and what can be done to make her talk?

4. What is the condition of her glands? If they are not functioning normally, what can be done to make them do so?

5. What can be done to aid her vision? If her glasses do not fit will you please give us a correct prescription for lenses?

6. Shall she continue her present medication, or should it be changed?

7. What can be done about her training and education?

8. How can she have the companionship of children for which she seems to long?

9. Can she become a normal individual with normal interests and activities?

We are looking forward eagerly to the report of the reading.
