This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 28th day of June, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [3062], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mr. [3062].]
Time of Reading 3:40 to 4:10 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Ohio.

GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [3062], present in this room.
-
Now as we find, there are conditions the corrections of which would make for much better physical reactions in the body.
-
These have to do, we find, rather with a complication of disturbances. While not acute at all times, there are conditions that become quite aggravating.
-
Then, these are conditions as we find them with this body, [3062] we are speaking of, present in this room:
-
First, in the blood supply there is indicated that ofttimes there has been quite an unbalancing in the chemical forces of the body. These have to do with the iodines, potash, soda and salts in their varied combinations in their activity through the system. And this has tended to leave lesions, or pressures, in varied portions of the body; more specifically along the area of the cerebrospinal system; or rather the drosses that have produced tendencies for a form of lesion, that - with the pressures made upon the cartilaginous centers where there are those combinations of impulses in nerve and blood supply to organs, and to portions of the locomotories - gives rather an acute disturbance.
-
In the main this leaves the body rather depleted, - when taxed, either physically or mentally.
-
Hence the tiredness, the constant - not a deep headache, but a hurting through the eyes, head, heaviness in the head, the limbs feel as if leadened or weighted at times. And sluggishness occurs in the eliminations. Even at times there is the quickening in the circulation between the heart and the liver and the lungs.
-
Not that these have become as yet parts of the constitutional disturbance, yet there are times - oft - when the body feels as if AWARE of the organs being active, or out of line with the mental and spiritual aspirations of the body.
-
The sources of anxiety, then, are in the nerve forces of the body; as well as there being the resultant effect or activity upon the action of the liver, the spleen, the pancreas, the kidneys at times. All of these become involved in their attempt to maintain an equilibrium throughout the body activities.
-
At times the abilities of the body in mind have had considerable to do with maintaining better influences, through the mind the control over circumstances, or even the feelings or emotions.
-
But, as the body interprets - and will find true, there is a physical body, a mental body, a spiritual body. While these are one - as in this body here - the activities in these various portions of the body might well be compared with a stalk of corn. The blade and the stalk and the various portions are a part of the whole, it is true; but the ear bears the fruit. So, in a physical body - there is the physical body with its attributes, its desires for replenishment from that assimilated through the system. There is the mind, that is the builder in same. When mental or physical food is taken, there must be the assimilation of same - to prepare it for replenishing or rebuilding the body.
-
These abilities, as indicated from the first, have so oft been unbalanced that the chemical reactions are not in proper accord, because of the lack of the activity of the thyroid glands, which are not impelled the more through all forms of activity of iodine in the system, which has been deficient.
-
This has left too much of the properties of potash to become as crystallizations; not as rocks, but forming in the lymph and emunctory circulation in the spinal centers or cords - not within the cord itself, but in the cartilaginous cushions - lesions; because of the lack of elimination of these salts.
-
These produce pressures upon the nerve system. The nerve system in response lacks in its ability to carry energies to the organs themselves. And, missing something in the sixty-eight times it is carried through the circulation in each minute, leaves something to be disposed of.
-
Flushing the system mentally OR through an increasing of the coordination of eliminations with alimentary canal, perspiratory system or respiratory system, may take these away. But it has left something. And these have continued for some time to build in the body those disturbances. Not to that extent as yet that the condition my be termed other than functional in its nature.
-
Then, there is not organic deterioration of brain, of the lymph, or of the activity of same. There is the very low reaction through the activity of the thyroids, especially the central; and hence the condition that appears at times in throat, in larynx, or bronchi, but these are only reflexes. They find reaction, of course, sympathetically, to the heart activity - in the quickening that is brought at times; also the conditions in stomach and liver, where there are those periods of a dull, dark, brown taste arising in the mouth of mornings, as if not enough rest, though the body may have slept very well - yet not rested, not recuperated. As indicated, there is the lack of recuperation, lack of those elements - not in the mind, but in the physical forces, to supply through the mental as well as the material forces.
-
Hence, as the entity may ask, what about the spiritualizing of these? This is well, but this comes through direct reactions. As has been indicated, such are healed with fasting and prayer. But what does fasting and prayer mean here?
-
The supplying of those coordinations of the activities of the physical organs with the elements sufficient not only for producing the necessary forces, but for the carrying away and eliminating of the drosses that have already been created - and that find their reaction or manifestation in the depleted feeling that arises in the body forces.
-
Then, to meet these, as we find in the present:
-
We would begin at first to alkalize the system. Not to such an extent as to cause an overalkalinity through the activity of the digestive forces of the body, and thus throw entirely out of kelter the activity of the gastric flows in the hydrochloric and lactic fluids, in the glands either of the mouth, throat or stomach.
-
But take a heaping teaspoonful of Upjohn’s Citrocarbonate in a full glass of water (but don’t fill the glass too full before it is dissolved, or you will lose a great deal of it, for this is effervescing in its nature, of course), each morning before breakfast, for five days in succession. Then leave off.
-
Begin then and take one drop of Atomidine in half a glass of water each morning before breakfast for five days.
-
Then begin with the hydrotherapy treatments once each week. These should include a mild sweat, - not the sweat as from sunshine, but rather the sweat that comes from a Fume Bath - not from Dry Heat. This may be prepared to take by self, or it may be taken in any good hydrotherapy place. Use a teaspoonful of Witchhazel in the pint of boiling water in the cabinet, so that the fumes may settle over the body - in the closed cabinet, to be sure.
-
Following such a Fume Bath or Sweat, have a good, thorough rubdown; not adjustments so much, but a massage along either side of the spine, more than upon the spine itself. For the massage, use an equal combination of Olive Oil and Peanut Oil. These will aid, through absorption, the elimination through alimentary canal and through the perspiratory and respiratory system, the accumulations - while the properties to be taken first are to set at advantage the eliminating channels - or the alimentary canal. Then the use of the super-quantity, or over-quantity of iodine (for that is what Atomidine is, though the poison is removed from the iodine), tends to purify or cleanse the glandular system, especially - for this body - the thyroid and the glands as related to assimilation, in the pancreas, the liver, and the spleen itself - toward digestion.
-
When these have been begun, tend to make the eliminations a little more active. Necessarily, there should be at least one full, high colonic irrigation, to cleanse the colon; so that all the poisons and accumulations there, where there has been this upsetting through the alimentary canal, will be eliminated from the body.
-
Let the laxatives be more from fruits and the kind of fruits and vegetables that would be taken in the diet.
-
Do include in the diet sea foods often, chicken, and especially the bony pieces; that we may add calcium, but not too much of potash. Hence for this particular body, not too much of some of the leafy vegetables. Do not include cabbage of any kind, unless it is the raw slaw; no turnips prepared in any manner; no rutabagas or things of such natures. Keep those out of the diet. Ham is also tabu, as also any red meat. No beef. Mutton may be taken occasionally if it is desired.
-
But do include often such as carrots, raw and cooked; lettuce and celery. Celery may be taken raw or cooked, or may be combined with other foods. Beans and lentils, all of these may be included, corn on the cob or the like; eggs - mostly the yolk of same and not the white, and NOT fried! The egg yolk may be taken at times raw, if desired, in beer or wine. These will add to the gastric flows in the body forces.
-
Do these - being consistent and persistent. We will find better conditions for this body, [3062].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Any advice in dealing with the breakdown astrology predicts? (A) If you don’t change, of course you would have the breakdown. But, as in all astrological aspects, these are TENDENCIES. Use your mind - it is the builder! and you will keep away from it!
-
(Q) Are there any latent psychic qualities concerned here? (A) Not in this particular disturbance. The physical conditions are disturbing the psychic abilities, as might be indicated from the formations along centers through which the kundaline forces would act, in meditation or the like.
-
(Q) Should vitamins be taken? (A) Take the vitamins in the foods, as indicated; this is much better than supplementing them - for this particular body, IF purified in the manner indicated.
-
(Q) What should be done for the ache in the legs and in the joints? (A) Read what we have just given! Do that outlined, and you’ll get rid of those aches!
-
We are through with this Reading.

(Atomidine is distributed by The Atomidine Company, 1326 St. Johns Place, Brooklyn, N.Y. It sells for $1 a bottle.
The Fume Baths may be taken at any good physiotherapy place, if you’ll insist that they use the Witchhazel fumes as indicated, or you may buy a Fume Gown or Cabinet - as from Montgomery, Ward & Company, or the like - and take the treatments at home; providing someone can give you the oil massage afterward.)

R3. 7/6/44 [3062]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
I write this letter reluctantly; I have put it off for several months. I know how deluged you are with requests and I hate to add mine. However, for the past months I’ve been suffering from some sort of rheumatism or arthritis. I’ve been tortured with sore flesh and aching joints. I’ve had to give up my summer teaching. The doctor’s treatment hasn’t helped, and he doesn’t know the source of the infection. Now he thinks maybe having my teeth removed will do it. Inasmuch as I saw two members of my family incapacitated from this ailment, I’m worried.
Do you suppose I could possibly have a check reading worked in somewhere? I’d very much appreciate it, and I’m desperately hoping it will be possible. I’m sorry to ask, and certainly wouldn’t bother you if I didn’t feel there was nothing else to do.
Last winter I taught a class of pre-medical soldiers. One class session I devoted to you and your work. They were most interested, and when I happen to see some of the boys now they ask about you.
I wish I could come to Virginia Beach for my August vacation. I’d like to see you all again. My regards to Mrs. Cayce and to Miss Davis, and of course to you. I hope you are well and strong again.
Sincerely yours, [3062]
R4. 8/19/44 Sister [3564]‘s letter: “May I request that in the event of something adverse, negative or disturbing is transmitted, you withhold such in the written report to my brother? Knowing him as I do, his suggestibility and sensitivity, I make this request, dear friend.”
Questions submitted:
- What should be done for the dizziness and peculiar feelings in the head?
- How can the ache in the legs and joints be remedied?
- What should be done for the nerves?
- Should Atomidine still be taken?
- How can the irregularity of the heart be helped?
- What will cure the belching?
R5. 10/19/44 [3062]‘s letter to GD:
Dear Miss Davis,
Forgive me for not acknowledging your letter sooner. I’ve had a bout of illness and have been practically cancelled out. I was surely sorry to hear of Mr. Cayce’s illness and wish you would convey to him my best wishes and hopes for his complete recovery. I won’t bother him by writing directly to him.
My brother was horribly killed in what was presumably an accident this summer. My sister and I have been almost crazy from worry about it all. It was such a strange and mysterious occurrence that we don’t know what to make of it all. I suppose there would be no chance of having a question-and-answer appointment sometime soon that we could get some things straightened out, would there? I don’t mean to sound greedy, and I know the situation there, and the terrific burden of requests you are having. But I just couldn’t resist anyway. Forgive me for doing it.
I look forward to my April check reading, for my doctor is not helping my dizzy and fainting spells at all.
My best wishes to you, Mr. and Mrs. Cayce. Perhaps sometime I can again drop in on you all.
Sincerely yours, [3062]

R7. 4/28/49 [3062]‘s letter to GD:
Dear Gladys,
I’m very reluctant to bother you again, but I don’t know what else to do. The rejuvenating elixir worked so wonderfully for me - I have an unbelievable amount of energy since I’ve been taking it - that I parceled out the quantity I had to several friends. Now I have no more. Well, about ten days ago I ordered a new supply from Meredith’s (not wanting to bother you), but I haven’t received it yet; and I don’t like to interrupt the treatment. So I’m enclosing $5, and I’m wondering whether you would be good enough to ask them to send me that amount of the formula 636. If they’ve already sent my order, just have this sent anyway, for I know someone who needs it.
Thank you so very much. I’m sorry to be a nuisance.
Sincerely, [3062]
I thought maybe the druggist didn’t want to fill an order direct from individuals.
R8. GD’s notes: Phoned & ordered #636 - sent 4/29/49; Pd.
3.50 & 31 cents postage (3.81) 5/7/49; said both batches had been sent - 1 c.o.d. & 1 prepaid; I ordered 3 #636 sent prepaid, 6/10/49; Sent note on postcard 6/29/49.R9. 6/1/49 GD’s note: I sent card.
R10. 6/7/49 [3062]‘s letter to GD:
Dear Gladys,
I have been rejuvenating right along at quite a clip. [3564] has been helped as has been a neighbor, who, poor soul, needed it badly. A physician here has had to admit that my hair is somewhat darker, though it had gone so snowy that I suppose not much can be done about it.
I make out the reading lists for all the freshman classes every year, and every year I include “There is a River”. Many have become interested that way. I heard yesterday of a student in one group who gave an oral review of the book and entranced the entire class, and that’s something if you know how hard it is to entrance these resistors!
I do hate to bother you again. (I promise not to do it for a long time.) But more several batches are needed - for me and [3564] and for two friends. I’m writing to you for it, since my direct order last time didn’t seem to work. Will you have Meredith’s send three double orders? I’m enclosing a check. If there’s any money left after all charges are paid, don’t be concerned - spend it on a dinner for yourself as I should spend it that way if I were there. I keep right on stoking the vigil light of education until the first of August. My karma apparently doesn’t include breathers! Maybe I could get down for a little visit sometime in August. Thanks so much, Gladys, and I am sorry to be such a nuisance.
Sincerely, [3062]
R11. 7/14/49 [3062]‘s letter to GD:
…, Ohio
Dear Gladys,
Thanks for your kind card. Yes, the elixir is here - much of it already down the gullet of my “patients”! I’ll send you a swallow-by-swallow account of its effects on us one of these days.
I’d like desperately to come down during my vacation. But there is a hitch. This Chicago astrologer who has proved frighteningly right in the past has warned me not to budge this summer. It probably seems immature to pay any attention to it; I don’t know what I’ll do. I’ll let you know, tho’. It may be that I can make it the last part of August and the first part of September. We’ll see. I need some kind of change.
All good wishes -
Sincerely, [3062]
R12. 9/19/49 [3062]‘s letter to GD:
Dear Gladys,
Well, I didn’t get to visit you all, either in the physical or the astral. I did get a few weeks on a relative’s farm, and I think it did me some good. I hope you at least enjoyed a slowed-down tempo.
I’m enclosing some money again for three double batches of the rejuvenation formula. I have two new patients! I do believe that it has helped my Sister and me quite a bit.
Would you mind giving the names of an astrologer and a numerologist whom you consider trustworthy? I should like to get some good advice on this turmoil period I told you about. If only Mr. Cayce were still here!
Best wishes to everybody, and thanks.
Sincerely, [3062]
If you’re busy (!) just get names on a card & send it along.
R13. 9/26/49 GD’s letter to [3062]:
[3062], your elixir 636 is delayed due to druggist not having one of the ingredients. He has ordered it - is trying several crude drug places. As soon as he can fill your order he will send it on and I will pay him. Hope you wouldn’t be out of the elixir too long. I’m having good results with it, too.
I had intended writing you to ask the name of your Chicago astrologer. Some of our group there would be interested in getting in touch with her; also she might be interested in our group and lecture work there this fall.
Two of our members in New York are quite good and are constantly helping people through their knowledge of numerology and astrology!
Mrs. Ariel-Taylor Warren (professional numerologist) Carnegie Hall, 154 West 57th St., N.Y.C.; Mrs. Carlton Cooley (non-professional, a Director of the Astrologers’ Guild of America), 162 East 46th St., New York, N.Y.
You can tell both of them that I referred you to them, and I’m sure they will do their best for you.
Bye now. Hope to send your elixir soon. [GD’s note: I sent card 10/6/49 saying 3 bottles 636 were mailed to him on the 4th.]
R14. 10/11/49 [3062]‘s letter to GD:
Dear Gladys,
The Fountain of Youth arrived yesterday - two bottles of it, that is. Perhaps, because of the rarity of the ingredients, it has gone up in price. I’m truly sorry to bother you with these orders. Thanks for mentioning the possibility of a Christmas-vacation visit. We’ll see. It all depends on a number of intangibles right now. This morning I’m trying to recover from a spiritualistic meeting I went to last night. The speaker-medium was advertised as a “world famous trance medium.” Actually it was the most horribly, anti-spiritual, crude, brash, satanic performance I’ve ever been to. No more for me - of that sort of thing. Give me rigid Catholicism or fervent Methodism in preference to what that was! Thanks for taking care of the elixir for me.
Sincerely, [3062]
R15. 2/6/50 He wrote of deep retinal hemorrhage in his right eye.
R16. 6/27/50 [3062]‘s letter to GD:
Dear Gladys,
Forgive me for my long silence. I thought about you many times, but there was no manifestation of it.
For a long time the doctor thought there might be a tumor in the eye, but now he has discarded that diagnosis. The sight of the right eye has not returned, nor do the doctors yet know what caused the hemorrhage. I had to give up much of my work, but perhaps the worst thing about the whole experience has been weaning myself from the constant reading I’d been used to. I’ve tried hard to see compensations. At any rate I’m faced with the paucity of my own ideas and a realization that much of my thinking has been echoic. But, if there is only one mind, I suppose in a certain sense we’re all unconscious plagiarists! The right consideration of that point of view might cure much of the half-baked worship of originality that has so often degenerated into exhibitionism and egocentricity.
I’m enclosing a check for ten dollars (I wish it might be more!) for the Association. I will return in another envelope the extracts from eye cases you so kindly sent me.
My very best wishes to you all and my warm appreciation for your kindness to me.
Sincerely, [3062]
R17. 9/18/50 [3062]‘s letter to GD:
Dear Gladys,
I had hoped to get down to Virginia Beach this summer, but as you probably know, I didn’t make it. And now here it is the day of the opening of another term. I’m trying to teach on a reduced schedule and have hopes of holding up. The sight in my eye has not improved, and I’m having to be careful how much I read. Extremely hard on me!
I wish I could get down for a good talk (I can still do that!) There are a number of things in the psychic realm I’d like to discuss with you. Maybe it’ll be brought about in good time.
I hate to bother you with this again, but will you kindly see that the druggist sends us two double batches of the “rejuvenation formula”; I’ve forgotten the number, but it’s the one I’ve been ordering. It stimulates my appetite and digestion, and since I’ve been eating less than a bird, I thought I ought to have some more of it, [3564] takes it too, so I want a bottle for her.
I’ve forgotten the price, but after it has been paid for out of the money I enclose, if there is any left, have a dinner on me.
Thanks very much, and good wishes to everybody.
Sincerely, [3062]
R18. 9/25/50 GD’s letter to [3062]:
Dear [3062]
Bum typewriter.
I sent the two bottles of 636, as per enclosed card, $7 plus 32 cents postage. Thanks for the extra 68 cents, which I will use as you suggest - for lunch at our new, one and only cafeteria.
We sympathize with you so much in regard to reading, knowing how much it means to you.
God bless you, [signed] Gladys
R19. 8/15/54 Sister [3664] wrote that he had avoided hemorrhoid surgery by using the “Tim” ointment for hemorrhoids as per EC’s readings.
R20. 4/21/58 [3062]‘s letter to GD:
Dear Gladys -
Mr. Godfrey informs me that he can no longer supply TIM. I wonder whether you could send me the formula; perhaps I could concoct a personal supply.
I’m sorry I haven’t been able to visit you all as I once did. Maybe I can sometime this summer. I remember our pleasant days while Mr. Cayce was with us. My sister joins me in sending best wishes to you all.
Sincerely, [3062]
Please tell me the fee for the TIM information. [GD’s note: Sent him 2 jars 4/26/58.]
R21. 5/18/58 Sister [3564]‘s letter: “[3062] is in … Hospital desperately ill of uremic poisoning - will be operated on if he recovers.”
R22. 11/5/58 [3062]‘s letter: “I’ve finally escaped from the hospital after four and one-half months - I’m feeling like one resurrected…”
R23. 11/19/58 GD’s letter to [3062]:
Mr. [3062] …, Ohio
Dear [3062]:
We are so happy that you are out of the hospital and feeling like a new person.
After much searching I have come across an extra copy of four cases of prostatitis, that someone volunteered to make once upon a time - not a very good typist. So, I would suggest that you not show these to your doctor friend, since they would not be representative of the good collection we could produce. I’m sending these for your own information, so that you can evaluate the advisability of proceeding along this line. There are 20 cases so far listed on this ailment. By the way, Al has been having trouble in this regard - and he has found the Glyco-Thymoline Packs and the Watermelon Seed Tea most helpful. (A few years ago, before we were married, he had surgery for a bladder condition - diverticulitis.) To you as a member I could review and summarize the 20 cases. However, if your doctor friend wishes to study them it would be better to have all twenty cases typed up in what we call a “circulating file” (loose-leaf book) for loan to physician members of A.R.E. We already have several books of readings available for lending, such as ARTHRITIS, TUBERCULOSIS, LEUKEMIA, MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, CEREBRAL PALSY, etc., etc. There are about 150 physicians in various parts of the country, of various schools, who have expressed their willingness to study and evaluate the Edgar Cayce material healthwise. We’d be glad to have your doctor friend join the group.
Remember us to […]. Do take care of yourself and come to see us when you can. Let me know if there is anything I can do from this end.
Mae says Hello, also Al and Hugh Lynn.
Sincerely, [signed] Gladys
R24. 9/8/61 Sister’s letter:
Dear Gladys,
Did you know that [3062] has been desperately ill of Thrombosis - blood clot, right arm paralyzed, leg partially, walks with aid of cane and brace in apartment. The speech is being recovered - or restored. Mind is alert and good as ever. Please write to […] and tell others who knew and loved him.

B1. 4/10/43 [3062]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I have heard of your unique and helpful work, and I am moved to write you about the possibility of a reading for myself.
I have been a teacher here in … for the past 15 years, and although my health has always been bad, lately it has been declining so alarmingly that it is all I can do to get my body to my classes. I say “body,” for lately my mental energy has been so low that I have long lapses of memory in class and can hardly maintain any continuity in my teaching. I am painfully nervous, and sometimes at night I have horrible experiences in which I fear that my identity is slipping from me. All this distresses me greatly, because at one time some inspiration in me enabled me to teach creatively; I felt as if an intelligence outside myself and certainly greater than I, was assisting me. I have been spending all my salary beyond our living expenses on doctors, but I seem to get only superficial relief.
Often I wonder whether I am in the work for which I was intended. All my life I have wanted to be a minister; I have had a feeling that that was why I was put here. Apparently you went through the same experience. Now I am forty years old, and of course it is too late for me to enter a Seminary. All of this I feel to be closely and subtly allied to my physical and nervous condition. I have wondered whether I should organize a group interested in spiritual study, but I have been confused and disillusioned by many of these groups that seem to be chiefly interested in material “demonstrations,” and I don’t know how I should fair or whether that is for me. On the other hand, I am troubled by the narrow sectarianism of many of the “orthodox” ministers.
Forgive me for having written so much - I know how busy you must be. May I hope to hear from you about the reading - whether you could possibly give me one, what the fee would be, and so on? I have a vacation this week, and could, I believe, if you think it necessary and advisable, come to see you then if you say so. You would know best about that. I have a deep and sure feeling that you can give me the help I so long for, and am eager to follow your advice, if you think it would better for me to come to you PERSONALLY.
I am heartened by the high-mindedness of your life and your refusal to make it petty or spectacular, and I send you my best wishes for health and happiness.
Sincerely yours, [3062]
